The Bump Expert Well, kind of. It’s not the cheese itself that can be harmful; it’s the process that’s used to make it. Before you chow down on the cheese, check the ingredient label and make sure it’s made from pasteurized milk. Unpasteurized cheeses can contain disease-spreading organisms that’ll put you and baby at a higher risk for getting sick. They also can carry listeria monocytogenes, deadly bacterium that are more likely to affect pregnant women. Pasteurization is what kills this nasty bacteria (along with other bad organisms). Varieties like Brie, feta and goat cheese are most likely to be pasteurized in the United States, but it's always worth it to double check. Just make sure to read the label before you buy!

Nearly every piece of brie, feta, and goat cheese i've found in the supermarket has "pasteurized milk" as its first ingredient. The only places i've found unpasteurized cheeses are specialty cheese/gourmet food stores and fancy restaurants. Chances are, if you're at a party and the cheese was purchased from a supermarket, you're okay.

Allsmile05, you will definitely be just fine. I highly recommend Dr. Michael Broder's book, The Panic-Free Pregnancy, which I found through an article by Lesley Porcelli who writes for Gourmet magazine. Her articles are great, as well. Basically, as Buttercup76 said in her post, most of the cheeses you come across will be pasteurized. It's extremely rare in the US for unpasteurized cheeses to be sold, and a feta from your local pizza place I am sure would be pasteurized. You just won't come across too many cheeses here that are not. :-)

I just found out that I am pregnant, about 4 weeks now. I love chicken finger pizza with bleu cheese and had a couple pieces last night. I just found out that I shouldn't have. Does anyone know if I will be ok or more importantly will the baby be ok??? Please help!!?

A good rule of thumb is to only eat cheese you've purchased from the grocery. You don't know if a restaurant is using pasteurized or not, so you shouldn't eat soft cheese when out to dinner.

It is actually illegal in the US to have an unpasteurized cheese aged under 60 days. The only place you are going to find them are specialty gourmet shops that are ok dealing in "black market" cheese. Soft cheeses (brie, fresh goat cheese, feta, etc.) are all aged under 60 days. It's more important to check for more aged cheeses. I don't believe the hype about raw milk cheeses though. I think if you are eating a raw cheese from a trusted producer then it should be fine. I'm not a doctor but I feel if it were such a huge problem European women would never procreate. :) Just my 2 cents.BTW most blue cheeses are made from raw milk. Just double check your labels!

It is pretty safe to say that most cheeses made in the us are pasteurized.... even bleu and feta, the only time to be concerned is if it an imported cheese. then all you need to do is check the lable. Most stores and restaurants us cheese made in the us, imported cheese is usually expensive

As an added comment, make sure you do not eat any soft cheeses, or really any refrigerated food, that is more than 7 days old. Lysteria is a bacteria that can grow in the cold temperatures of a refrigerator, but it takes at least 7 days since the food was made or opened to grow to a level that would be unsafe. It's a nasty bug that affects pregnant women particularly severely.

The reason unpasteurized cheeses should be avoided is due to the risk that they may contain listeria (also found in deli meats). Listeria is killed at a temperature of 160 degrees, which is achieved during pasteurization. Cheese Crackers & Cheetos: There is no risk of listeria in these products, as they have been cooked to the proper temperature, contain pasteurized cheese, and are highly processed. Ricotta cheese is made by heating the whole milk and cream or whey with and acid such as yogurt or lemon juice to a final temperature of about 205 degrees F, which kills listeria. It is highly unlikely that you will ever come across unpasteurized cheese in the U.S. unless specifically seeking it out. The avoidance of soft cheeses during pregnancy is an antiquated overhyped rule.

We have all heard about Listeria outbreaks in the news with cheeses and deli meats. It is a scientific fact that Listeria poses a risk to everyone especially pregnant women, you CAN get sick and it can also lead to a MISCARRIAGE so why would you take the risk?!! I love soft cheeses, and some labels do not say whether the milk is pastuerized or not so I avoid them all together. An assumption here can lead to regret later. Is is really that hard to wait until after the pregnancy to eat foods that have the potential of causing harm?!! The level of risk is not important, the PRESENCE of risk is. To knowlingly eat something that can potentially make me or my baby sick is irresponsible and not an option!

All cheese in the United States (unless it's homemade) is either pasteurized or aged over 90 days, which kills the bacteria. I've talked to many cheese experts about this. It's all safe. Just look out if you leave the country and don't eat homemade cheese (which can not be sold in stores) In the end, it's all up to your comfort level.

Some soft cheese are made from pasteurized milk which can contain Listeria, a harmful organism that can cross the placenta to your baby. Just be sure to check the labels of foods before you buy or eat them to make sure it is made from pasteurized milk and it should be fine. If you are not sure, don't be afraid to ask the store where it is being sold.

Don't spazz over what happened before you knew better. Nothing you can do about it now. Now that you know, wait on anything questionable until it won't harm your baby. Just avoid soft cheese and deli meat and taking care of the kitty litter and drinking alcohol of any kind and everything else that can hurt your baby, simple. And don't ask other people with as much knowledge as you have whether it's okay - ask a professional, somebody who either has the knowledge him/herself or knows where to find a definitive answer. Don't trust your child's health or your own to people that may answer without knowing what they're talking about, or have "it didn't hurt anything with MY only experience with it" stuff. You may not have been seriously injured when you fell off the scaffolding, but why tell people that it's okay to climb up there without safety equipment and use of caution and common sense? Eventually somebody's not gonna be so lucky when they fall.

My husband and I work for a cheese manufacturer and there are primarily two types of cheese making processes (to over simplify it): Processed and Natural. Most natural cheeses are pasteurized with the exception of some of your more gourmet cheeses (as Paula mentioned below). Processed food is classified as any food that is altered from its natural state, which includes milk. Pasteurization is simply a process to slow the microbial growth in food. All processed cheese is pasteurized as part of the overall cooking process (161 degrees for 15-20 seconds). Although, processed cheese is typically not as good for you as natural cheese. You can buy 2% and reduced fat but the percent of actual cheese solids in these cheeses is debatable. Reading labels is very important and if you are unsure, the best bet is just to skip it for the time being.

Seriously, I think this is ridiculous. Do you think all Dutch and French women don't eat soft cheeses throughout pregnancy? I would bet a lot of money that they do and there are plenty of Dutch and French people still around. This is just another thing we Americans are overly concerned about. You should be more concerned about undercooked pork and chicken as those will actually make you sick. I have eaten soft cheese since being pregnant and haven't had any problems. In fact, I crave brie.

I agree with some PPs. I ate soft cheese all throughout my last pregnancy with no problem. The thing is, if I were to fall ill, I would tell the doctor immediately I had eaten cheese or sushi, or raw eggs, etc. So that the proper treatment could be given. There are many more things to worry about in pregnancy than a possible infection from cheese that is most likely pasteurized anyway. JMO!

this has nothing to do with cheese, but i learned your not supposed to eat ceasar dressing or hollindaise sauce, unless it is made with an agg substitute and not actual egg. hollindaise sauce and ceasar dressing is made from raw egg so it has certain bacterias that are especially dangerous to pregnant woman.

I am sitting here laughing at all this because I just bought some Laughing Cow Cheese and THen I realized that it was a soft cheese and I am hesitant to eat it because it is soft however I do know that as long as it is pasteurized it is safe to eat. My mothere is actually from The Netherlands and I lived there as well for a little while but my Mom says that back in teh day they didn't say you couldn't eat unpasteurized cheese deli meat hot dogs etc. But now that more research has been done and times are different especially in the way these things are prepared it is just best to do what the doctor said and when you are in doubt about something call your drs office nurse line or your insurance company nurse line and they will be more than happy to answer any questions.

I asked my doctor about the foods you're not "supposed to" eat at the beginning of my pregnancy and she told me that you're not that much more likely to get sick while pregnant than you are while not pregnant (only a slightly lowered immune system) and that if foods didn't make you sick before, you're probably okay to eat them while pregnant. Just be aware that certain food poisonings could lead to miscarriage/defects. This pregnancy and my first pregnancy, I've eaten all kinds of cheeses (though I don't think any have been unpasteurized), sushi, deli meats, mayo, salad dressings, etc. I have never gotten sick or had any issues. Its not worth it to stress over all the little things that could go wrong and restricting your diet so much. TONS of things are possibly not good for pregnant women and their unborn babies. Most food packaging, including metal cans, have BPA, veggies are sprayed with pesticides and often improperly washed, and pretty much any meat, dairy product, fruit, or vegetable can have bacteria that can be harmful to you or the baby. Please, please don't be so paranoid about everything while you're pregnant. Yes, there is always a slight possibility that you could get sick and/or lose the baby. There is also a slight possibility that your baby could fall while learning to walk, hit his or her head and die. Anyone out there planning on not letting her child learn to walk? I'm not trying to be callous. Just remember that there are risks involved in everything. Nothing is guaranteed. And you have to eat. So just do your best and don't obsess over it.

But I have gotten the A-OKAY from three separate doctors, AS LONG AS IT IS PASTEURIZED!! Which most are in the U.S. Ask your Pizza Parlor if you could see the container in which their blue cheese comes packaged in if you are that concerned. Better safe than sorry! I'm SERVSAFE Certified (food safety for restaurants)..... As long as the cheese is pasteurized or cooked to a certain temperature it is fine. Which in most restaurants you can be sure the proper temps are reached....It's called the temperature safe zones. I know we use them in ours.

The reason people tell you to avoid soft cheeses is because some of them are unpasteurized. Pasteurization is essentially cooking the food before it is sold to you. This process kills bacteria and the one of concern here is listeria. HOWEVER, there are only 2500 cases of listeria in the US every year. The people who are affected by this bacteria are suffering from weakened immune systems. I personally do a lot of things to boost my immune system, including getting adjusted by a chiropractor, taking prenatal vitamins, getting regular moderate exercise, eating healthy, getting 8 hours of sleep, and drinking lots of water. As a result, I drink raw milk and eat raw cheeses because of the benefit of the healthy bacteria for your gut as well as the greater bioavailability of the unaltered proteins. Most people who are lactose intolerant are simply experiencing an inflammatory response to the proteins that have been altered by cooking. I recommend doing what makes the most sense for you. Everyone is different.

The thing about bleu cheese is not exactly the pastuerization process, but that it contains actual mold cultures. I LOVE buffalo chicken salads with bleu cheese dressing, but my doc told me it's best to lay off until after the birth. The soft cheese question has me a little bit perplexed. My doctor says absolutely no soft cheeses (except cottage cheese and cream cheese are fine). I've read that you can be tested to see if you are resistant to the bacteria, but it doesn't seem that my OB/GYN offers this test (I asked). My Mexican friend grew up on a dairy and makes her own queso fresco from unpasteurized milk, and has 5 healthy boys without ever having a problem. Mexican women I've spoken to have never heard of this problem with soft cheeses, but I did run into one lady in the supermarket who had to go to ER with stomach pains. The doctors told her it was from eating soft cheese. I tend to err on the safe side in my pregnancy, so I'm staying away from soft cheeses. I did have some feta on a pizza. It was cooked until the crumbles were brown on the edges, so I figured it was safe to eat. I feel even better about this, reading the posts that say most feta is pasteurized. I ask for mozzerella instead of feta on my salads (where the cheese is not cooked). Before I became pregnant I drank raw milk from my cow and made raw cheese without problem. I'd bet I have resistance to the bacteria, but I wouldn't go so far as to bet my baby's health on it! After all, it's not all that long to give up eating soft cheeses.
