Is it safe to be around people who smoke while I'm pregnant?

Re: Is it safe to be around people who smoke while I'm pregnant?

The Bump Expert

Nope. Secondhand smoke is bad for both you and baby, no matter what.
In fact, according to the American Lung Association, studies have shown that women exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy were far more likely to deliver babies that suffered from low birth weight, along with other health problems. So make sure to steer clear of cigarette smoke whenever possible.

WOW... secondhand smoke can in fact, be even WORSE than regular smoke, if your friends are smokers, then hopefully they can be considerate like friends should and not smoke while you (and the baby) are around before and after pregnancy.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

My fiance has been a pack-a-day smoker since age 14, and he's now 43, and not looking to stop smoking. I've stopped recently, since learning that I'm pregnant, and had been wanting to stop for some time now. He's the type of smoker who smokes as soon as he wakes up, drinks his coffee, watches tv, drives, before bed, etc. Which means I need to get up & leave the room whenever he lights up. It's frustrating because I want to keep both myself & baby safe from secondhand, but don't want to get up & leave everytime he lights up... it's a tough situation.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

@AMedina: I really hope by now he has realized the inconvenience he is causing you. Couldn't he smoke outside? Now is a great time for him to quit, too. There are so many stop-smoking aides (gum, lozenges, pills). My husband quit when we were dating. He used Chantix and did not have any of the negative side effects. Something to think about...When someone smokes, just because the smoke has cleared the room doesn't mean the carcinogens are gone. I have heard (but to be honest, never researched if this is factual) the carcinogens remain in the smoker's breath, the air, furniture, etc. My mom, brother, sister, and aunt smoke...and when we are at my aunt's house everyone smokes in the house. Now that I'm pregnant I'm going to have to decline invitations to her home.

My hubby refuses to quit smoking too. It's very annoying, but luckily he only smokes outside. It just makes me sick to even smell it. Plus I try to explain to him that if he goes outside to smoke, and then comes right back in I can still smell it and the harmful effects are still there :( I'm fighting a losing battle though!

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

My uncle is in stage 4 cancer and about to die any day now. He has been living with my aunt for the past month, and we all go there to spend time with him. Everyone there smokes, and sometimes its pretty thick. I am 15 weeks pregnant, and don't want to breathe the smoke for my and my baby's sake, but I would regret not spending time with him more than I would breathing some smoke. I'm hoping there's no problems caused by this and I can try to be super healthy from here on out and that will negate any problems the smoke caused.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

A co-worker smokes outside our office front doors several times a day. He reeks of smoke when he comes back into the office. Even the elevator is contaminated. I have expressed to him that I have asthma and the smell of smoke can make me sick. Will this constant 2nd (or 3rd) hand smoke affect me from TTC?

I'm always around my boyfriend and family when they smoke. ): they smoke outside and everyone goes out there to talk. even non smokers like me! i will probably just stay inside by myself from now on, even though they come right back in afterward and reeeek of smoke! i can't even cuddle with my boyfriend anymore because he smells so horrible. even when i'm not right next to him, he still smells. but i suppose that's better than sitting out there with them. /:

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

Just try to stay away from smokers. I know it’s hard because there are quite a lot of smokers out there. They really need to use an electronic cigarette whenever they’re around others who don’t smoke, especially pregnant women.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

I recently just found out that I'm pregnant and I could really use some advice if anyone can help me out: my husband and I are currently living with his grandmother because she needs to be taken care of. She has always been a smoker even before my husband was born and she used to smoke in the house A LOT! Now she smokes in the garage but our house still smells like smoke most of the time ( not too strong...more like its gotten into the carpets and drapes and things). We dont feel right asking her not to smoke in her own house after shes been doing it for 40+ yrs, but I know it wont be a good thing for me or my baby. Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this?? I appreciate it! :)

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

I'm going to my husband's parent's house for a couple of days for xmas, and his Grandma who now lives with them because she has a lot of health issues is a heavy chain smoker and smokes in the house all the time. His parents are pretty sensative and are going to be offended that we're going to have to stay in a hotel. Even though we're not going to sleep there we're still going to be spending a lot of time there. How do you think I should handle the situation? Even if she goes into another room to smoke, the house still smells aweful. Is this dangerous to be around this type of environment, or do you think it should be fine for a couple of days?

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

Ham, it's still dangerous. Isn't that 3rd hand smoke, when it smells like smoke? It's still very unhealthy. Rallymonkeymom, even though it's her house, you're there to take care of her. She owes you enough respect to consider the health of you and your unborn baby. Home ownership doesn't give someone the right to cause birth defects.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

Of course being around smokers is not the best thing to do when carrying a baby. That is, from all moments in a lifetime, the most appropriate and mandatory moment for extra care and cautions. There are vitalizing herbal treatment, there is herbal tonic for anyone who wants to enhance general health. Stay away from health threats and risk factors.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

Theoretically it is not safe at all, but practically, it is quite hard to stay isolated from smokers for almost an entire year. There is no particular risk or danger if someone accidentally or occasionally sits around a smoker every now and them during pregnancy months. However, protection is advised. I mean, if you have friends that can`t give up smoking and you can see they are trying and willing to, just talk to them, lend them a hand.

Q&A: Is it safe to be around smokers while pregnant?

I'm in a similar situation. I have stopped going to visit my family as frequently as I did because I'm allergic to dogs (they have two) and the smoke really bothers me. I've had the discussion with my parents numerous times about the smoking issue and they refuse to see my view. They tell me that it's their house and they'll do what they want. They refuse to open windows and they refuse to even use a ceiling fan because they get "cold". The ceiling fan seems to just blow it around anyhow. They refuse to not smoke while I'm there and they refuse to go out on the porch to smoke. The only place I can see them is at their house. They refuse to come to our home and they don't go out to dinner. I'm at a loss. It doesn't help that they are definitely chain smokers. As soon as they're finished with one cigarette, they light another. My sister (who is a smoker) has even commented about how smoky their home is and that the smoke bothers her. No joke, I've had to toss out my contacts when I got home after visiting them because they had a "film" on them. I'm at a loss. I don't know what else to do. I just found out I'm pregnant and I know I'm not comfortable going around the smoke and I certainly won't take the baby to see them if they don't stop smoking around us.

I have been wondering if all girls get sick from cigarettes? I mean, I think I am about 4 weeks, and they taste funny to me and smell a little weird, but they don't really make me feel sick. So so all girls get sick?

Oh my word people, there is harmful toxins everywhere, are you going to lock yourself up in a oxygen tank when your pregnant, living in a busy City with all the pollution and harmful gasses or stop eating fruit, veg and meat because there might be hormones injected into the food to make it look good?. you cant stop living because you pregnant, your not dying!! your just pregnant!!! live your life and keep calm, don't get drunk everyday and don't smoke like a chimney... all in moderation...... please .. you make me tired just reading the comments.
