What kinds of natural supplements are safe to take during pregnancy?

Re: What kinds of natural supplements are safe to take during pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

You're smart to ask -- those "natural" supplements aren't automatically safe for baby... and won't necessarily help you out. Here's what's safe, what isn't, and what's currently caught in controversy.

The Good
Alfalfa
: Full of vitamin K, which helps blood clotting.
Chamomile: Can help ease nausea (always a plus!) and is a natural anti-inflammatory.
Fish Oil: Contains omega-3 fatty acids, and can boost both baby's coordination and mom's mood.

The Bad
Saw Palmetto: May cause hormonal activity, something you probably don't need more of.
Dong Quai: Found to be a uterine stimulant and has relaxant effects... need we say more?
Black/Blue Cohosh: Can induce labor in women who are not fully to term.
Feverfew: A great headache remedy, yes, but since it can cause allergic reactions pregnant women are advised to stay away.

The Debatable
St. John's Wort:
Some docs tout it as an alternative treatment for depression, but there's little research to say it's safe for baby.
Red Raspberry Leaf: Richin iron and can decrease nausea, protect against miscarriage and ease labor pains, but some say it isn't safe during the first trimester.

Q&A: Safe natural supplements to take during pregnancy?

Some safe supplements to take anytime are Standard Process Whole Food Supplements. I don't think they are sold in stores, but many chiropractors sell them. They are completely natural and, like the name says, wholely food. They are completely chemical free so they don't normally make you sick too.

Remember: just because something is "natural" does not mean it is safe for you or your baby. After all, arsenic is a naturally occurring substance! Also, supplements are in no way tested or regulated by the FDA. ALWAYS talk to your doc before trying any supplement whether you're pregnant or not. Also, your pharmacist can be a valuable source of information as well. I will step off my pharmacist's soap box now! :)

Q&A: Safe natural supplements to take during pregnancy?

Generally, I say to stick with a good prenatal multi from your local health food store and a fish oil, Fish DHA, or Algae DHA if you are scared about taking a fish supplement. Watch what you find in the regular grocery stores or drugstores. A lot of them contain many artificial ingredients and colors...you would be surprised what some vitamin companies put into their formulas! Most workers at local health food stores are a wealth of knowledge, but do your own research!

Ditto on the fish oil. Make sure the label reads "pharmaceutical grade". My naturopath has me on 3 tsp. a day. Also very important is vitamin D3. Studies are now showing that it can decrease the risk of autism later on. My naturopath has me on 3,000 iu/day. Remember to keep taking your folic acid, but not too much as that can be harmful. I am at about 1,000 mcg (take at least 400). What else... Those are the important ones to up before and during pregnancy!

What about rosemary? I've heard that it's incredibly dangerous. Is this true, or just a myth?

Q&A: Safe natural supplements to take during pregnancy?

I know of a resource that can evaluate the safety of your prescription and OTC medications, as well as natural supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. They can also evaluate other specific exposures you have such as environmental or occupational, or maternal illness. I had a friend recommend them to me. She told me they are free, and completely confidential. They are state funded so they don’t sell anything or sell your information. It is the Texas teratogen Information service; their website is http://www.ttis.unt.edu/ and their phone number is 1-800-733-4727.

Thank you for that answer. I'm already writing a list and tomorrow I'll run to the pharmacy and see what I can find. I was so concerned about natural remedies and the possible side effects that I started searching every plant I had in the house. I even went on http://www.cannabis-seeds.co.uk/ to see what negative effects these plants have on pregnant women. That was just a curiosity I had and now I know. As you said, there are many natural treatments out there but natural doesn't always mean healthy for the baby.

As far as great natural prenatal vitamins, a friend recommended NewChapter Organics Pefect Prenatal, which I've been really happy with. It contains folate, which is the natural version of the processed folic acid. Highly recommended!

Q&A: Safe natural supplements to take during pregnancy?

Theoretically all the natural supplements are safe during pregnancy but you should always check the indications of any supplement that you choose to take in order to avoid some problems. During my pregnancy I took only vitamin C and I used a Retin A Cream. I was lucky because I didn't have any health problems.

I thought that steroids are safe during pregnancy, but I was wrong. My physician told me that I could have a miscarriage if I increase the steroid supplementation. Even more he advised me to quit taking steroids during my pregnancy and to take multivitamin supplements.

Q&A: Safe natural supplements to take during pregnancy?

I've seen mixed replies about Vitamin D supplements. Yes they're safe! No they're not! I have MS and have to take 4000 IUC's of Vit. D every day. Can I continue this when we start trying in the next couple months? I'm so confused...

You can call 1-800-733-4727 for free and confident information. I call them weekly with questions about things I can and cannot use while pregnant and they don't get annoyed. :)
