Hey, housing a baby is tough work. When your feet are sore and swollen and your back feels like it's about to give out, there are few things that feel as glorious as a heating pad. But while you can certainly put extra heat on these areas, you should avoid having anything hot directly on your belly for more than 15 minutes at a time. Docs agree that you don’t want your core body temperature above 102.2 degrees, so if you feel discomfort in your abdomen, speak to your doctor instead of trying to treat it with a heating pad. Laptops are no exception, either -- avoid putting it directly on your belly and keep it in your lap or on a hard surface instead. Extremely hot baths are also a no-no, for the same reasons.

Wondering how you'll ever relieve the stress? There is an upside to all of this: You can use it as an excuse to get a free massage out of your S.O. (It’s all for the good of baby, after all.)

S.O. does mean significant other, as mentioned, hot baths are out of the question, but what about hot showers, are they just as bad for the baby?

I think hot showers are ok because you aren't immersed in the water, and your body is fully exposed to the air around you which can keep you cool.

Right now, hot showers make me so sick! If you are experiencing morning sickness as I am, they stay to stay away from hot showers or baths because it make the symptoms much worse. I can totally relate to that. :(

I have a miniature dachshund that sleeps in the bed with the DH and I, and she usually likes to snuggle up against my belly or put her head on it. Is a dog too much heat?

Dogs are no way going to make your body temp go beyond 102F. Plus if you feel too hot you'll probably pull the blanket off or push the dog over. My jack russell sleeps with me too and I seriously doubt he'll ever be a problem. Just be comfortable. :)

So upon asking my doctor (technically two, the high risk and my normal ob) I was informed that your body will tell you when you are too hot. In fact a clean hot bath at home won't hurt you either. Hot tubs, especially public are no Nos because of the infection risk. If you do take a bath and feel lightheaded, nauseated etc, get out. Limit it to short baths such as no more than 15-20 minutes. Our bodies are amazing and have all kinds of adversaties built in to protect our babies and us. Just pay attention to what its telling you.

I was taking a shower the other day and started feeling so lightheaded and dizzy that I literally turned off the water and just sat down on the tile soaking wet for like 10 minutes before I could even move. My hubby wasn't home, but my cat (who has been insanely clingy and overprotective since before I even knew I was pregnant) started freaking out and even jumped in the shower with me! I must have been close to overheating because my body very clearly made it known that I needed to cool down QUICK! It really was one of the scariest moments in my life, though, and since then I only take showers 10 min or less and make sure hubby is home or the phone is right next to the shower. If only I could teach my kitty to dial a phone...
