Re: Is it safe to get a tattoo while I'm pregnant?

The Bump Expert

While we can’t absolutely say it’s not safe, most docs don’t recommend it.

First, there’s the risk of a blood-borne infection like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV due to improper equipment sterilization. Any infection you contract could be passed on to your baby.

Even if you feel sure you’ve found a safe tattoo parlor, there’s a big unknown factor. Very little is known about the effect tattoo dyes and inks can have on a fetus, so it’s probably better to err on the side of caution. Lower back tattoos can also be a problem if you plan to have an epidural. Again, while there’s no clear evidence supporting or refuting giving epidurals near tattoos, many docs employ the “better safe than sorry” theory here. Definitely check with your own OB before getting inked in that area.

Finally, there’s the cosmetic factor -- remember, your skin changes during pregnancy. A tattoo you get during month three of pregnancy will more likely than not look quite a bit different when baby is 3 months old.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I have a tattoo that covers pretty much all of my spine and back and have had it for years. I had an epidural with my daughter about a year after it was done and have and had no problems with it.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I don't think she meant is it safe to HAVE a tattoo, and get pregnant. She's asking if it's okay to GET a tattoo while you are pregnant. And while I can't sit here all day and debate the health risks and concerns, I would say ABSOLUTELY NOT. Wait until after your pregnancy is over to get a tattoo.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

your body is all ready working overtime as it is so to get tattooed can be silly because your body will have to work harder to heal it. also you risk possible infection and sometimes even when your not pregnant you risk infection. better just to put only your body at risk and not you and your babys

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I actually got a tattoo while i was 16 weeks pregnant. It healed faster than any of my other tattoos i had gotten in the past. I was given a "tour" of the facility and was shown the cleansing process... and the tattoo artist even used a face mask to prevent germs from spreading. I have had ZERO problems with my tattoo and i am 30 weeks pregnant. I am very happy with my decision, and i talked to my OB/GYN about it and she shivered at the thought but examined the tattoo and was pleased. I believe it is the place you get it and the person you are that determines if a tattoo will be dangerous or not. I've actually had more problems with my swimmer's ear this summer than the tattoo itself. =]

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

My husband is a tattoo artist - under no circumstances will they tattoo a pregnant woman - he says it is too much stress on the body.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I have a LOT of tattoos.. and I would not recommend getting a tattoo while pregnant... it does cause a TON of stress on the body. after being tattooed for 3-4 hours I am exhausted. although... i do have a friend.. her father passed and she wanted to get his memorial tattoo and she was 4 weeks pregnant

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

In most tattoo parlors (the ones with standards and that are safe) you have to sign a form stating that you arent pregnant or drunk because its unsafe and irresponsible for you to get a tattoo at those times.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

If you got a tattoo and you didn't know you were pregnant at the time, it's obviously okay. Pregnancy books advise you to just wait (it's only 9 months!) to get a tattoo because there is a risk of infection. Your skin also changes and swells during pregnancy, not to mention your horomones are out of whack- so you may think you have a really awesome idea for a tattoo and then once your horomones chill out you'll realize you don't want that tattoo anymore. Also, at the beginning of the post it says lower back tattoos complicate epidurals and that is 100% untrue. I have an up-to-date pregnancy book and it states that your lower back tattoo will not get in the way- keep in mind lower back tattoos are so common nowadays that doctors and nurses have become all too familiar with epidural placement. If you already have a tattoo, you'll just watch it stretch as you grow but it should return to normal after you give birth (or lose the weight).

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

i was 8 weeks pregnant when i got my most recent tat! its a butterfly with my 5 1/2 year old daughter's name above it! i know that i will have no regrets about getting it because she says she is my butterfly and with the nasty custody battle her father is trying to pull right now, its a way for me to always have her close to me without having her physically with me! it healed way fast, less than a weel and takes up about a 4in tall by 2in wide area on my upper back just below my neck. i did sign a paper stating that i was not pregnant prior to getting it, but i was unaware until 2 days later. the only thing (other than size and ammount of time it took to get) different than my 'tramp stamp' as so many call it is that with this one, in the areas shaded, i bled. my other tat is a full color kermit the frog! that one i wasnt pregnant, but it never bled, scabbed or peeled. this one did all 3, but healed in less time too

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I got a flower tattoo on my shoulder when I was only a few weeks pregnant & didn't know, if I had known I wouldn't have thought twice about and just waited. Everything is fine with my baby and tattoo but I wouldn't risk his health for something cosmetic that I should wait on anyway.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I'm 31 weeks pregnant now, and my stepdad is a tattoo artist. I wanted to get a tattoo but was very hesitant about it due to all the risks being the same as if you're not pregnant which is all of those diseases. I was about 24 weeks when I decided to go through with a tattoo on my shoulder. I wouldn't recommend it to all ppl because some ppl are cleaner than others and some ppl have higher pain tolerence than most. Getting a tattoo pregnant was very scary for me, I had to watch my breathing the whole time because it hurt, and I was constantly trying to hold my breath and YOU CANNOT DO THAT!! lol It did heal up veryyyy fast tho!

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I am not sure if I am pregnant yet but I want to get a very small tattoo but the tattoo artist that I go to said that he would not do it because he would be scared about the stress it can have on the baby if I am pregnant.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

Although I don't particularly agree with getting a tattoo while pregnant, I actually did get one but I didn't know that I was pregnant at the time but my tattoo did actually heal a lot quicker then my other 6 did tht I had previously gotten and my son seems to be just fine. I am 26 weeks pregnant now and he is a very active little boy inside my buldging belly, as a matter of fact he is kicking like crazy as I am typing this response, but sense my last tattoo I have not gotten any and do not plan to get any until after he arrives. Also some tattoo parlors do ask you on the consent form if u are pregnant and if you are they may or may not do a tattoo on you!

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

Just so you all know, there is no problem with having a lower back tattoo and getting an epidural. You can still get an epidural with a lower back tattoo.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I will give my advice with some of my limited professional experience. I worked as a shop manager at a local tattoo parlor for quite some time, and this was a question that I was always curious about. I ended up asking our lead artist his opinion on the matter. What he told me was that while we can remove most of the risks of airborne pathogens, and disease via our cleaning procedure, tattooing is a huge strain on the body (this I can attest to, I've had some serious work done, and I can tell you it takes a lot out of you.) Its a lot of trauma for someone so little to go through. Honestly, there maybe absolutely no issue, but for me. personally its just not worth the risk. It's something to look forward to though when all is said and done: a beautiful tattoo once your baby comes, maybe some little feet walking up your back, or a portrait of your little one. A present to yourself to congratulate you and your baby on a job well done. Oh and just fyi, most industry professionals ask if you are pregnant, and many will refuse service. It comes down to the tattooists personal code of ethics. Most reputable shops I know won't do it. But as always its up to you. Good luck :)

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I think the only risk for a "tramp stamp" when it comes to an epidural is if it's fresh. Obviously an old tat is not gonna make a difference. Otherwise there would be a lot of unhappy, drug free delivering mammas. I could see there possibly being an issue with a fresh tat. Obviously you don't wanna stick a needle into a fresh wound. I myself am jonsing for a new tat right now (I'm 16 weeks), but I'm just gonna wait until after I deliver and consider it a gift for a job well done. I'm super picky about choosing an artist, and always want the cleanest environment for stuf like that, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Q&A: Is it safe to get a tattoo while pregnant?

I was tattooed while on vacation before I had a positive test result. I'm 14 weeks now and have so far had no compilations. According to ALL of this info I should not have flown, should not have gone through the body scanner, should not have ate any airport food, should not have had a drink, should not have been using the deodorant I used, should not have used clearasil, should not have taken my pro biotic, should not work at my job, should not have a cat, should not have an egg over easy, should not sleep on my back, should not be as old as i am and should not have been tattooed. how on Earth has our species survived? I'm trying my best here, but i also should not be stressed out as I am about all of this too.

Just keep in mind that when you get a tattoo the ink enters your bloodstream -that's the same reason people with tattoos are not allowed to donate blood.
