Re: Is it safe to get a hair relaxer during pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

Unfortunately the jury's still out on this one. The good news is there's no proof that hair relaxers are dangerous to your pregnancy. Bad news is there’s also no evidence to say for sure that it's completely safe, either. It’s no secret that hair relaxers contain harsh chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin, so for your sake and baby's, it's best to err on the side of caution and let your hair go au natural until the end of your pregnancy.

Im a licenced cosmetologist, and I wouldn't relax a pregnant womens hair. There are different kinds of relaxers, but all of them contain really strong chemicals and while hair wont absorb chemicals into the blood stream, the scalp will.

As a licensed apprentice, I agree with humboldtcupcake. Some relaxers even have traces of formaldehyde in them! :/

Im a licensed cosmetologist, and this is baby #2 I relaxed my hair with my daughter and she is fine, and I am doing so now, I just try to do every 2 or 3 months stretch it out as much as you can. I use the Mizani butterblend, works great on my hair.

I was wondering the same thing but when I realized that the relaxer wouldn't take and it was breaking my hair off like crazy that I should just put my $200 straightener back to use. Lol.

Some women do these things because they dont care or believe anything will happen to their baby. Some dont end up with anything bad happening. But in my opinion, a good mother that knows that this shouldnt be done would wait a few months and find atternatives for keeping their hair nice. Babys first aways.

Many of the Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin treatments contain formaldehyde - http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/formaldehyde/hazard_alert.html While the main concern is for the spa employees who are around these chemicals frequently, I would not suggest having a treatment done while pregnant. I've had a few keratin treatments and loved them, but wouldn't do it now that I'm pregnant. It's not worth the risk.

I tried it but won't do it again. 1. it wont work fully because of the hormones going awry and 2. it just strips the nutrients out of your hair that it needs. Just put braids in. you can still style them and dont have to worry about the maintenance as much. braids and oiling my hair worked wonders on my hair (i cut it before baby #2) and now on baby#3 i'm already a long ways in and excited to see the results of my patience and hardwork with my hair. I don't think i'll even go back to relaxers.

Aveda just came out with a non-formaldehyde alternative that is 74% natural called aveda smooth infusion retexturizing treatment. I met with the senior colorist at my aveda salon and felt good about it. I just had it done. I am 24 weeks pregnant. It doesn't go on the scalp and was only in for 12 minutes. I am a little nervous but it seems like most of the websites say its ok in 2nd trimester. Has anyone else had it done?

I am a licensed stylist/salon owner and have been in the industry for 20 years, and I have never seen nor heard of any problems that have nor can occur while a woman is pregnant. Yes it is true that a woman body goes through hormonal changes where some women hair grows and become fuller and some experience hair shedding but both can occur for clients that are either relaxed or natural. If your hair go through changes that are abnormal, don't panic! Consult your stylist first and also consult a certified trichologist not a dermatologist who is more familiar with hair and scalp disorders. Also be patient because once baby is born your body's hormones will become normal again and so will your hair if there aren't any other medical conditions.

I waited until my first trimester was over to get another relaxer. Fortunately, I have been able to stretch out the time between my relaxers to every 12 weeks or so. During my pregnancy I only had 2. However, I did completely change my skin care regimine since I was using certain products everyday that were absorbed into my skin. I felt that those things posed more of a risk for my baby.

I used during my pregnancy the best hair growth products and I didn't have any bad reactions to the cosmetic products. Also the baby was healthy, so the products didn't affect his development. Do as you like, but try to use only quality products.

I understood it's safe to color your hair while pregnant, so I think it's OK to get a hair relaxer, too. If you're not completely sure about this, but you still want to take care of your hair (I know my wife did!), you can take natural hair growth vitamins, from what I know, they don't represent a threat.
