Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

I've heard that you shouldn't fly until after 12 weeks because of the risk of miscarriage -- is this correct? I feel like I've heard of lots of people flying before 12 weeks, though, so I'm wondering if this is just an outdated theory.

The Bump Expert

If you've never had a miscarriage before, it should be safe to fly. The other theory you've heard has to do with the fact that approximately 20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Once you've had two or three miscarriages in a row, this risk increases to more than 30%. If you are going to have a miscarriage, it's much more likely to happen in the first trimester than later in pregnancy. By flying, you aren't increasing your risk of miscarriage, but it can be logistically and emotionally difficult if you experience a miscarriage away from home.

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

I have flown before the 12 week mark and the only big problem I had was that it made my morning sickness 10 times worse! Not very appealing on a plane!

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

I had an early term miscarriage over the summer. Now I am pregnant again and of course really worried about this time around. So I was very comforted by this page (& my Doc!) saying that flying itself before week 12 does not contribute. I put it to the test- flew to/from Europe in week 4/7 - no problems on the flights. I am now at 10 weeks. Hope this helps!

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

I flew from Ohio to Thailand at 8 weeks and back again at 10 weeks. Other than the food smells making me sick I didn't have any problems. I was told to drink at least a cup of water every hour and to get up for 15 minutes every two hours (typically had to pee at this rate so sleeping through it wasn't an issue at all!) If the smells get to you, ask the flight attendant for a bag of coffee. I laid the bag of coffee beans on my shoulder and it helped my tummy settle almost instantly.

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

can you take a motion sickness pill while you're pregnant? I know that might be a stupid question, but I need to know.

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

My OB/GYN's website says that Dramamine is safe to take.

re: Q: Fly before week 12?

I read that this info comes from studies done on flight attendants who fly 20 hours a week over the course of their pregnancies and have increased risk of miscarriage. And something else about the radiation and air quality in planes. Dont quote me, google it.

Deb- try SeaBands or Relief Bands. They are motion sickness bands, accupressure on your wrist, so arent drugs. Good for morning sickness too.

Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

I missed my period two days before flying from Germany to the US. Considering that this was a trip that had been booked 7 months in advance and would be my first time in 6 years to fly "home", it would have taken a lot for me to cancel .... as it was, I didn't realize I was probably pregnant until a few days after landing in America. So at week 5: Berlin-DC, Week 6:DC-Salt Lake, Week 8: Salt Lake to Berlin ..... my best friend whose husband is a doctor recommended to try to walk around a bit on the long flight home in order to prevent possible blood clots. The only problem for me was climbing over people the many times I needed to go to the toilet. :) . Week 9 my doctor here at home confirmed that I was pregnant ... and baby is developing great (week 11 now)! So I would say not to worry too much about it.

I flew to Hawaii (an 8 hour flight) before I found out I was pregnant. My husband and I went hiking and snorkeling and I had no problems. Now I am 21 weeks pregnant :)

Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

I have never heard about the risks of flying during first trimester, but flying late in pregnancy can be dangerous because the changes in pressure can actually cause you to go into labour. (Hurricanes can have the same effect!). Also, you are more prone to getting blood clots in your legs which can travel to your lungs after sitting for such long periods.

Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

My advice is to stay WELL hydrated while flying and definitely get up every once in a while... I sat for 4 hours on a plane yesterday at 8 weeks and have had really bad swelling in my legs and feet for the past 24 hours. My dic told me to watch my BP but otherwise elevating your feet and drinking plenty of fluids will help the situation over a few days.

Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

My sister in law did fly before week 12 with her doctor`s permission, of course, and only after she had run an extra series of medical tests to make sure everything is ok. She says she now regards that moment as more like a personal development journey, where a lot of wonderful things happened. So she does not regret at all for making the decision of going on vacation back then.

Q&A: Is it safe to fly before week 12?

My doctor told me it was safe for me to fly with the airplane when I was pregnant in 10 weeks, the flight lasted only 1 hour so nothing bad could happen to me or the fetus. He also told me that a woman pregnant in more than 15 weeks must make additional tests if she wants to make for example one of the Honolulu sightseeing tours, the flight lasts more and they must make sure she is ready for such a trip.
