Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

Re: Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

The Bump Expert

The jury is out on whether caffeine can actually hurt your fetus, but most health-care professionals do recommend limiting intake. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it pulls fluids and calcium from both you and baby and will keep you running to the bathroom. (As if you aren't peeing enough already.) Also, caffeine has no nutritional value and can affect your mood, sleep schedule and iron absorption. And it’s not just the coffee -- remember, caffeine is also found in most teas, soft drinks and chocolates. Play it safe by totally eliminating caffeine, but If you simply can’t kick the habit, at least cut back. Some studies show that excessive caffeine consumption (more than 200 mg or one to two 8-ounce cups a day) can increase chances of miscarriage or premature birth.

Going cold turkey can be tough, so try lowering your caffeine intake gradually. If you’re a coffee drinker, work your way down to half-caf before becoming a full-fledged decaf drinker. Exercise and frequent small meals (good ideas whether or not you're kicking a habit) will help keep up your energy during the withdrawal. If you just like to have a tasty drink on your desk, try mixing fruit juice with sparkling water instead, or customize decaffeinated tea by adding cinnamon, cloves or bits of your favorite fruit. Though herbal teas usually don't have caffeine, run the ingredient list by your doctor first -- some may not be safe for baby.

I don't drink coffee, but I have to have my chocolate. Do you think it's okay to have a small amount or just cut it out completely?

ktmiles |

re: Q: Is Caffeine Okay?

My doctor says that caffeine is okay in limited amounts. You don't have to cut it out completely. It's just that too much can be damaging. (You can have your chocolate-just not all the time)

What types of herbal teas are safe to drink?

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Make your own decaf tea by boiling water, let it cool a little, then pour the water over the leaves (enough to cover), let sit for one minute, then discard the water. Add more water and steep to make your cup, and you may drink that. The caffeine comes out of the tea within the first 30-45 seconds.

OMG I MISS MY COFFEE! i was definitely sure to kick my coffee drinking though. My dad would have a cup made for me every morning before school. But when i found out i was pregnant i totally stopped drinking it. I also LOVE Mt. Dew. I drink it all the time. but now whenever i get it i buy it caffeine free. The only time i drink caffeine is when we go out to eat or at school when i drink tea for lunch. =D

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

The main problem with caffeine is that it is a vasoconstrictor- that means it closes up your blood vessels, which means that it squeezes off bloodflow to your baby/placenta! Not a good thing... kind of like trying to breathe through a straw, you still get oxygen but after a few seconds it doesn't feel good and you think you're suffocating. Again as I always say--- ANYTHING IN MODERATION--- we have enough to worry about during pregnancy don't stress yourself out about an occasional soda, subway sandwich, or sushi roll! Stress is way worse for your baby!

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

I used to work in a teratogen research lab primarily for FAS, but also other teratogens like caffeine. That's right... caffeine is considered a teratogen because it crosses the placenta and can cause detrimental neuropschological effects (that is, if you haven't miscarried already). It primarily causes developmental motor delays. Too much caffeine can also cause infants to be overly fussy, especially during feeding. Do yourself and your baby a favor, don't drink caffeine at all if you can help it, or if you think you are just too addicted to resist it, stop and ask yourself if it's really worth it. Hopefully, you'll know the answer. True that 1 or 2 caffeinated drinks here and there won't do much damage, but if you're consuming them everyday, it's time to rethink some things. I hope this helps clear a few things up because there isn't a lot of media attention around caffeine yet, but I'm sure there will be in the near future. Unfortunately, the damage may already be done by then.

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Everyone needs to lighten up, it true that it is probably best to eliminate caffeine, its probably also best to not have anything fried or with butter etc... but come on seriously having a cup a day is fine. I know several mothers who drank a cup of coffee throughout their pregnancy and gave birth to happy, healthy babies who in turn became intellegent successful adults. Thats being said, don't go overboard.

my doctor said one or two cups of coffee a day is fine, and she has one of the best reputations of any of the ob/gyns in the area; I think it's irresponsible in fact to scare the crap out of pregnant women that allow themselves this one perfectly fine luxury (in moderation) just b/c you opt to go cold turkey.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

While most health care professionals agree that you should limit your intake (mine said 1 cup of coffee in the morning), beware that there is hidden caffeine in a lot of beverages and some really delicious food! Tea, chocolate, and soda all have high levels of caffeine, so you need to make sure you limit those too beyond just your coffee. PS - Also double check the number of your espresso shots at Starbucks for fraps and iced coffees!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

i read in articles that caffiene increases the possibility of having a miscarriage so ive stopped drinking coffee. my mom and fmil both said to avoid coffee but my aunt said that having one cup of coffee a day wont kill the baby but my cousin was born with a seizure disorder, and i wonder if there was a connection. as for caffiene, im steering clear of coffee, limiting my soda intake and im not really a chocolate kind of girl so thats easier to steer clear of. ooh im also avoiding tea, the fatigue is a burden sometimes in the evening but i an 8 oz cup of coke or diet coke and im good, i noticed that a woman i work with who is 6-7 months along drinks a 20 oz thing of diet coke 2-3 times a week and she appears healthy...

I would drink 3-4 cans of Pepsi a day and I lived for it. A cold can would instantly make my day. The day I found out I was pregnant I lowered it to one can a week. Its been the HARDEST thing I have ever done but I havnt had any headaches like I would get when I would try to quit before. I'm 5 months pregnant and a couple days a week I started having a small cup of decaf coffee in the morning. I've also tried decaf earl grey tea with creamer, it's a nice alternative to coffee. BUT when I do have either the decaf coffee or the decaf tea I'll drink extra water to compensate.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

most places say about 200 MG of caffeine a day is okay. Chocolate is FINE. I looked it up and I could have up to 200 tootsie rolls a day or something like that? there are tons of tables online that will tell you how much caffeine is in whatever candy bar you're eating, if you want to think about it that much. In general, as long as you're not eating 20 candy bars a day, you should be fine there. They say that's about 1-2 little styrofoam cups of coffee. You should NOT drink esspresso. A regular bottle of soda has about 50mg of caffeine, but I don't think you should have over one a day because it's very concentrated. There is no proof that it does anything to the fetus, but there are studies that link continuing 'caffeine use' and miscarriage. Personally, I stopped completely my for my first trimester... except chocolate, which was one of the only things I could keep down, rarely had a caffeinated drink my second trimester, and third trimester I have something caffeinated about once every 3 days, especially later on. Also, like someone posted earlier, I recommend drinking extra water when you do have coffee or pop. even uncaffeinated, because it dehydrates your body and that's the last thing you need!

Not pregnant yet but already quit caffeine. I've heard that there I'd a very samll amount of caffeine in decaf coffee. For those if you who believe stopping all caffeine is a good idea: what are your thoughts on the very small amount in decaf?

eburnside |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

some of these answers are absurd! The jury is definitely NOT still out about whether caffeine can affect your fetus. I think it is pretty well-known that it does. However, we did learn that limited amounts okay. Basically, 1 cup of coffee/day is okay, but not more than that. Decaf coffee does contain a small amount of caffeine, so as long as you're not drinking buckets of it, its okay.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor actually suggested that I drink at least one cup of caffeine a day. I have been having severe migraines throughout my second trimester, and after prescribing medication to me for it (that didn't work) she suggested that I try taking a tylenol and drinking a soda with it. I've been doing this whenever I feel a headache coming on and things have been a lot more pleasant for me. I've never really been a soda drinker, but she said that some women's bodies experience the effects of a caffeine withdrawal, and it is sometimes necessary to get a little caffeine fix. In general, I think that caffeine in moderation is fine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I just went to my first OB class last night at my clinic. What the nurse told me is that it is ok to have some caffeine during pregnancy. She referenced diet coke....she stated it was ok for women to have 2 cans a day or a total of 12 ounces. She also stated that those 12 ounces should be split up into two 6 ounces. So one cup of coffee a day isn't going to create problems.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was like addicted to Coca-Cola and soft drinks at my first appointment approx 6 weeks along. Now, though, I've completely cut out coffee and tried to limit myself to one or two soft drinks per week. We'll see how my sugar levels test at the next appointment. It really hasn't been as hard as I thought to dramatically cut down intake, just goes to show a little effort goes a long way! I'm sure whatever your personal decision, as long as you are eating well otherwise and mamma is happy, so will baby.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

As far as diet drinks go, the aspartame slows down metabolism. There are concerns that it could be carcinogenic but nothing has come out conclusive. Same goes for 100 calorie packs of food. Nutritionists suggest have the regular stuff in moderation. Or perhaps something with splenda. Arizona makes a great pomegranate green tea mix with splenda in it. Good luck.

I drank pepsi everyday with my first pregnancy (it settled my stomache and kept the migraines at bay). I drink an occasional mocha frappe or pepsi this time around for the morning sickness too. I just stay away from Coca cola because they say it takes calcium from your bones. I also occasionally have a cup of coffee when I am out with the girls.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My first trimester I drank about a half a cup of coffee or less because of the nausea. Now in my second trimester going into the third I drink 1 cup a day and replenish with lots of water. I don't drink soda or eat chocolate so having one cup I think is ok. My mother in law drank a pot of coffee a day with each child and they all turned out fine although I wouldn't do the same. If anything that helped me not worry about it as much~

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I am pregnant with my third son, due in May. During both of those pregnancies (and even not pregnant) I was a daily coffee drinker and the occasional soda drinker, nothing overboard. Well, I never knew that caffeine was such a controversy during pregnancy. With my first two (now 12 and 9) I drank my morning coffee daily, probably 2-3 cups, and they both turned out fine with no problems. But that doesn't mean that won't have issues with THIS pregnancy. Every woman is different, as is every pregnancy. One woman may have 2 pots of coffee everyday for her entire pregnancy and have the baby turn out perfect while her neighbor had a cup of tea a week through her pregnancy and the baby had problems. I think that if you can go without caffeine, GREAT!! But those who have tried to quit and cannot, I don't think it's going to hurt if you have 1 or 2 a day. I still do, but I bought decaf and half-caff and I drink tea daily. What I do that seems to help me is to make it a big event...make each cup of caffeinated beverage feel like a mini celebration!!!! It will make it more enjoyable. I also make sure that if I do eat or drink anything with caffeine, that I drink extra water to help counteract the diuretic effects. I don't drink coffee everyday, but if I feel the need to, I use the decaf or half-caff and I make sure that I don't make it too strong. As for my tea, I drink regular Lipton, green tea, chammomile and Chai, and drink tea 1-2 times a day ( 1 cup if I had a coffee that morning). So I'd say it's okay, girls. Don't beat yourselves up, just watch your intake. Watch for hidden caffeine in ALL foods and beverages. Make sure to drink your water along with anything caffeinated that you ingest. Just for good measure!!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

All I could ever find about caffeine and pregnancy has been conjecture. I couldn't find any substantial evidence of what exactly caffeine does to the fetus. Only people guessing. I had 2 - 3 cups of coffee with my pregnancy and sometimes more because caffeine helps headaches. My son is 6 months old and fine. He was born a week early but weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz. and 21 inches so it obviously didn't affect his growth. And he seems to be developing faster than the other 2 kids in his class that are older than him. But every baby and pregnancy is different. You can't control everything that goes on and you can't pinpoint one single cause for things that go wrong.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor said it is okay to have caffeine as long as I limit it to no more than 300mg/day. I have found that since I have been pregnant my body can't tolerate as much caffeine which also means I don't need as much to not get a headache. I do not know if this is just something I have experienced or if it is common. While I try to do what is best for my baby, and I supposed that it would be ideal to give up caffeine altogether. But I feel that a small amount of caffeine is better than the stress that comes from severe withdrawl headaches and migraines when I don't have any. Also, it is important to ask your own doctor about this because it you already have elevated heart rate, which can happen during pregnancy, there may be more of a reason to avoid caffeine.

Kelly619 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm not a physician, but I've worked for a large national coffee chain for almost nine years, so I know a little bit about caffeine. Chocolate has a nominal amount of caffeine, and black tea has about a third of the amount found in the same amount of coffee. The problem with some teas can be that it often contains stimulants beside caffeine. Herbal infusions are naturally uncaffeinated, since they don't actually contain any tea. An herbal infusion is when a bag is just filled with different herbs, fruits and plants. Beware specifically of any teas or infusions containing raspberry leaf or cramp bark during pregnancy. Though these are both great outside your time of pregnancy, they have been found to cause premature birth. Green tea (a true tea) is also something to consult with your doctor about before drinking during pregnancy. It naturally increases metabolism, which is not the safest thing to do when carrying a baby.

I've tried to go cold turkey, if I wasn't working full time I think could have managed. Even into my 2nd trimester with increased energy levels, I never fully feel awake and have taken to naking short naps at my desk. I have cut out caffeinated soda's, but will indulge in 1 tall starbucks latte when I truly can not keep my eyes open.(a tall is only 1 shot of espresso) I've read that up to 300mg of caffeine a day is okay, a latte has 75mg (per shot). Be sure you ask how many shots they put in a drink. When I order a grande, which is two shots, I ask for it as a half caf.. I found this website that has a caffeine chart of various beverages/foods and their caffeine content. It will at help you make better choices about what you may be drinking. http://www.cspinet.org/new/cafchart.htm#table_coffees

Scooby1970: Are you a perfect mother? Probably not. Your statements are not based in fact. Do you talk to your children like that? Those are YOUR opinions and as far as proven scientific research goes, I'd like to see exactly where you get your information from. There is so much false information online, on the handouts from the OB/GYN, word of mouth, etc. I'm learning what to do and what not to do by looking up the actual research, most of which is inconclusive or contradicted by 5 other studies. Maybe you should actually read the findings from studies and the facts about caffeine intake, toxoplasmosis, and exercise during pregnancy. Do you really think that you should be telling other loving, caring pregnant or TTC members what their business is? If you are blessed with the ability to carry a child, then it is your business and your RIGHT to have a baby if you choose to have one.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was looking into this a lot when I first found out I was pregnant because I'm a complete caffeine addict (making 6 daily runs to Timmys was a minimum at my old job with energy drinks between). Most of what I found out about it was that its most dangerous in the first trimester as it increases the chances of having a miscarriage. I was completely turned off by coffee during my first trimester anyway as it just turned my stomach and I had withdrawal migraines as a result. As soon as I could start drinking coffee again, I did. Not nearly as much, I might add, but I have a cup or two in the morning and completely ditched the energy drinks. My sister continued to drink 2 POTS of coffee a day and had no troubles with any of her 3 pregnancies and her kids are fine. Its funny, all I keep hearing from my mom is how "when we were having babies they didn't have all these rules!"

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I do not like how this subject is often presented because on the one hand they tell you to totally eliminate but then they say if you have to then limit intake. My doctor said that a small amount is fine, that if you are used to ordering a certain size, order a smaller one. I am not a big coffee drinker, only like the occasional latte but since I have been pregnant (8wks on) I have not drank one latte. Having said that, there is a frozen drink from our local coffee place that has capuccino it and I have had one once a week. Most of the time I order a small instead of the medium. The small has 80 vs. the medium and 130. I really do not think that this is going to harm my baby, and I am sorry but I really need to have this drink every so often. As I said, its not everyday, at the most twice a week and I always make sure I have eaten something first. I just do not like being made to feel guilty, especially when there is still gray areas with regards to this subject. Our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers most likely drank coffee and most babies back in the day were fine. I know there are extremes, where some people do drink too much coffee but then again they really should not be for a multitude of health reasons, pregnant or not.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

WHY RISK IT? That's the question everyone should ask themselves. "Ok in moderation" "the stress is more harmful". There's something wrong with these phrases. For me, if there is event the slightest chance something may not be healthy for my baby, I WON'T do it. Period. I was the biggest caffeine addict you've ever seen. Energy drinks, coffee, espresso shots, energy pills, all of these I would down everyday. I would get blinding headaches if I didn't, so I have been addicted to caffeine for a long time. The MOMENT I found out I was pregnant, I stopped cold turkey. I also stopped smoking cigarettes. A few days later, I didn't even miss it. The joy (and worry) of having a baby outweighs my own selfish needs so much that I don't even feel stressed. Caffeine is bad. It messes with their heart and sleep patterns. If you can't stop yourself, that's pretty sad. If I miscarry now, I will rest assured that I did everything in power to keep it.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

If we do a bit of research on the net basically up to 150mg everyone says is fine and possibly even up to 300mg. Don't go drinking a grande at Starbucks because you'll smash your 150mg limit but a regular cup of tea is about 45mg and a 28g block of Cadbury chocolate has 15mg of caffiene. I am 5 weeks pregnant and limit myself to one cup of tea or small cup of coffee per day. I love tea in particular but I think one cup per day is no issue according to any research I could find on the web.

I don't drink a can of it a day, but here and there I think it's okay. Side note: when I told my in-laws that I've heard its best to avoid too much caffeine from coffee, etc, they were stunned. They said they never heard of that and my mother-in law would drink strong coffee everyday with her pregnancies. My husband is perfectly fine :) It seems that there are so many more rules now with pregnancies... don't do this, avoid that, don't eat that, etc. Sometimes it seems like too much.. (my opinion)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

It's fine...let's not take everything to the extreme...a grande latte at the 'bucks is still far less than the suggested limit of 200-300 miligrams. I drank caffeine through both pregnancies - around 150-200 mg a day - and gave birth to 2 huge, super healthy boys (late, I might add), with no adverse affects. You just have to use common sense.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I've cut back almost completely on the caffeine, having a little piece of chocolate, a decaf coffee drink, or a little iced tea once in a while. however, I am a HUGE believer that no one, pregnant or not should have anything with aspartame in it. seriously. it is still a fairly young product and it is believed to be cancer causing and cause mental problems in fetus'. Just because it's not wide spread that people are dying from it doesn't mean anything. remember this child in your belly is unborn, so from the time it's conceived if you drink diet anything or fewer calorie/ less sugar products, you are putting that in the the smallest possible body and over long periods of time, will do damage.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

It's really sad that society has women afraid during pregnancy. My doctor is also pregnant and drinks coffee every day. She said there is an entire industry out there to scare women while they are pregnant. I'm beginning to think it is a mistake reading this site. She told me to eat deli meat, eat brie, eat seafood. I am done with sites like this. They do more harm than good.

Have it in moderation. As they said above, caffeine is a diuretic and can take fluids and nutrients away from your baby, so if you need your caffeine each day, cut back the portion and make sure you compensate with extra water, juice, and healthy diet.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I drank caffeine my entire 1st pregnancy. I'm a sucker for iced tea & drank anywhere from 32-64oz a day before getting preggers. I DID cut back....but I can tell you the days where I had NO caffeine were few & far between. Both me & baby boy were perfectly fine. In fact chunk-o tipped the scales at 8lbs 6oz...and was a week early. I'm now pregnant with #2 and I'm doing the same thing.....cut back. Even though DH gives me a dirty look whenever I order a tea or soda when we're out to dinner. Hey! I've given up gin & tonics.....I think we'll be ok if I have a tea with dinner.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My midwife suggested that if I drink decaf, make sure the caffeine was extracted using water. She said some decaf's are processed with chemicals that can potentially be more harmful than the caffeine itself. So I opted to just up the amount of milk I add in the morning to my cup of regular coffee and make it more of a "poor-man's latte" with about 8 oz. milk and 4 oz. coffee. It still gives me that little jolt I am used to in the morning and satisfies my coffee craving. That being said, I don't think it's worth it to stress out over a little caffeine. If you're downing a pot or two each day, maybe rethink your strategy. Otherwise, don't spend your entire pregnancy freaking out over nothing!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I have heard so many different statements about whether caffeine is okay or not from different websites, word of mouth, doctors, etc. Being a coffee addict myself I have cut back from my usual 3-4 cups of coffee a day plus energy drinks to maybe a cup and a half a day. I didn't drink anything in my first trimester as I was nauseated often and since I've heard that the 1st trimester is the most fragile growing period for babies. But now I don't worry about it so much since my nurse-midwife said it was ok to drink up to two cups a day. Furthermore, if pregnancy is supposed to be such an amazing period in our lives, worrying about how much caffeine you are consuming is probably going to keep you from experiencing how wonderful this time really is. Think back to hundreds of years ago or even to when you grandparents where giving birth, they didn't have all the sophisticated tools and knowledge we do know. Women smoked, drank, and did God knows what else that we are now "advised not to do" and look how many of your parents turned out fine. I'm not saying we should all ditch the rules and run around drinking kegs and smoking our lungs out but lets enjoy pregnancy as a whole and not get caught up in the "what ifs" and "how much's". This is my advice and don't say that I'm selfish or not a good mother, this is just what I believe and honestly I know my little baby boy will turn out perfectly happy and healthy if that is God's plan.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I am just over 8 weeks along. Before getting pregnant I drank up to 3 cups of Starbucks or McDonalds coffee a day. My doc says its ok to have a cup a day but I have gone completely cold turkey after scaring the daylights out of myself by reading an artical that says there are early tests that show drinking even the smallest amount of caffeine while pregnant, especially while in the first trimester can cause severe facial deformalities (ears, nose and other parts of the face to not grow in). Not to mention I don't think I could stand loosing my precious angel after feeling him (or her :) ) move inside me. My little peanut means more to me than my delicous Starbucks :)

i think its okay, just monitor the amount of caffeine you have. i drink decaf coffee, or espresso. Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

This probably isn't linked at all to caffeine but it's driving me nuts.... Is RUM CAKE safe to eat while pregnant???? I'm getting married in October and I'll be 6 months preggers at the time. The place we're having our reception is a really nice little Italian restaurant. The lady is doing our wedding cake as well (A. everywhere else was booked for my weeked and B. she makes a badass dessert) The wedding cake she serves is a rum cake. My fiancee is concerned about me eating anything with liquor in it b/c I've already had some complications and we don't need anything else going wrong. The way I see it, the cake is being served to kids, and doesn't the actual alcohol dissipate when it's baked???? Help me out ladies!!!!!!!!!!

I called a wonderful organization that is very helpful with answering questions about exposures while pregnant or breastfeeding. They are state-funded and completely confidential, and the best part is they don't sell anything or sell any information. I know they answer questions about medications, maternal illness, paternal exposures, environmental or occupational exposures. I remember asking them with my first child, and I believe they said you could have up to 200 mg of caffeine per day, but you could contact them to be sure. I think they could probably help with the rum cake question as well. Their website is http://www.ttis.unt.edu/ and their phone number is 1-800-733-4727.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine is not okay no matter what!!!! Caffeine can harm your baby. It increases the risk of your child being born with diabetes, low birth weight, can affect the babies heart, increase the risk of miscarriage and stillborn, restricts the blood flow to the fetus, and the list goes on. I am surprised any Doctor would say its ok. Don't risk your babies health for a caffeine fix!!!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

High doses may increase the risk of miscarriage. A cup or two of normal coffee is not considered a high dose. Many people in the past and present have continued normal caffeine intake and had perfectly healthy pregnancies. That does not mean everyone has had the same experience. So, it's pretty simple: know those facts, and then make your own damn decision about the risks/benefits, and stop yelling at everyone else who makes a different decision.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I stopped drinking coffee when I quit smoking, 10 days after I found out I was pregnant. Then I started back up with my half to three-quarter's of a cup a day. (Basically 1/2 coffee, 1/2 creamer in a 10 oz mug. I never finish the whole thing, and I'm not worried. I saw my baby on the U/S at 8 weeks 3 days, and he/she looked healthy, and the heartbeat was fast and strong. I've had absolutely no alarming symptoms at all and I hit 12 weeks tomorrow. The coffee is a comfort in the A.M., I know I'm not drinking more than 100mg a day, and I'm not a choco-holic or consume other foods that contain caffeine. Also, it helps to get my B.M.'s going in the morning, so I haven't been plagued with constipation. I'm thinking about getting 1/2 caf 1/2 decaf, just to be even more safe, but I"m truly not concerned. My older sister drank coffee (2 cups a day) throughout her 4 pregnancies/births and all of her children are smart, healthy and completely normal=) And with almost all of them, she also had to have her 1 King Sized Snicker's a day=)

I quit Dr. Pepper with my first pregnancy, but got hooked on Diet Coke after baby was born...trying to lose weight with Weight Watchers. With 2nd and 3rd pregnancies, I didn't really limit caffeine at all (after all, I had toddlers to chase after while pregnant!) and my babies were healthier and bigger than my first! And now with #4, I'm still not going to worry about it! There are so many other things to be concerned with, I think this is a minor detail! Like another poster said, you should also cut out fried foods, butter, salt, etc, but we all know that's not going to happen! Just make good choices and use caffeine in moderation

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I really need to say something about the people who have made a comment like, "I drank coffee my entire pregnancy and nothing happened to me!", as if that's supposed to provide proof that no one needs to worry about it. These people must not understand the concept of RISK. There is a CHANCE that consuming caffeine COULD cause you to have complications. Just because you gambled and got the result you were hoping for, does not mean you will win that gamble the next time, or that I or anyone else will get the same result. The March of Dimes has a good article summarizing the current understanding of caffeine and pregnancy: http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_1148.asp Everyone needs to weigh the odds and decide what's best for themselves.

I was told that as long as you have less than 300mg of caffeine a day during your pregnancy you are fine. That is 2 cups of coffee or 10 12oz cans of coca-cola and tea and chocolate have even less caffeine than cokes do. When you go in to have your 4d ultrasound done sometimes will tell you to drink caffeine to get the baby active and moving.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

you just have to be reasonable about it, and it's your decision to make. caffeine doesn't have any nutrirional value, but neither do pickles or a million other things that pregnant women crave (and cave to) I drank caffeinated beverages with my first two pregnancies and I am with my third now. both of my sons were born healthy, with good appetites, healthy sleep patterns and no behavioral problems. there are so many things that impact fetal development (most of which science hasn't touched on) As long as you are making an informed decision, you are aware of the possible consequences and you taking responsiblity for your decions. I get migraines and I am way more comfortable drinking a cup of coffee than taking migraine medicine to take the edge off.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was getting horrible, blinding headaches during the first half of my pregnancy ( I am 24 weeks now.) My Doctor had prescribed a medication to help with them, but when I got the prescription filled the pharmacist gave me the run down of risks including that fact the the baby could be born addicted to this medication. I called the OB and she said she would rather I drink a cup of coffee everyday and take some Tylenol. She told me it was MUCH more important to avoid caffeine during the first trimester, during the second third trimester the baby is implanted and the risk of a miscarriage is very low. I am also very healthy aside from some pre-exsisting conditions, so I think that has to be taken into consideration too. If you think about it, coffee ( in know there is caffeine in other products... but I am exclusively a coffee drinker) is a natural substance, and, if you have asthma like me, it can help curb your symptoms and help carry oxygen to the blood, which is great for baby. As with everything in the world... moderation is key. And everyone should take their personal situation into consideration. I have a cup 8 oz.- 12oz ( also a great way to get milk in) and if I am really dragging I may have a small iced tea for lunch. At 24 weeks I have a healthy baby boy and ( thanks in part to caffeine) I feel great!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I worked in the coffee biz for over a decade and unless you drink equal amounts of water to coffee, it is never really all that great for you; with or without baby. As far as the decaf process goes the "swiss water" process is chem free but can be very expensive, but the chem process is actually just fine. All the chems used in that process are burned off at 190 degrees (approx.) which is A LOT less then the roasting process and less than what a fuctional coffee maker preps at. So in my opinion that is not a worry. Just what ever you choose don't forget to drink lots of good ole fashioned h2o.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

originally my doc said limited amount of caffeine- but then a study was published about a month ago about the effects of caffeine and the docs are now saying NO WAY. Wow, so just because other infants and people have seemed to turned out fine ((ahem) no health issues, no birth complications, no health or physical issues later in life, no psychological issues, no ADHD, no autism, no delays in learning development etc) and those moms were putting chemicals that affect the brain into the body during pregnancy- some of you feel safe doing it? That amazes me- with all these issues with health and birth defects, birth complications, autism spectrum disorder etc that docs do not know what all of the underlying factors are in causing these- it amazes me that some folks don't take any of that into consideration. Why wouldn't someone want to give their infant the best chance possible by staying away from things that science has proven to be detrimental to the body?

I think having a cup of coffee a day is fine. I know plenty of people who had coffee during pregnancy and their kids are healthy and fine. I wouldn't suggest slamming back monster energy drinks everyday :-) Enjoy your cup of coffee your baby is fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Absolutely. If you're an addict like most of the world's population, within two-three days you would feel that wonderful headache from being deprived of it, if you decided to try and quit cold turkey. Headaches and pregnancy are not pleasant. I've been told to limit myself to one caffeinated beverage a day...but they didn't tell me what size. I looked it up...it's basically 12 fl oz., a tall coffee, a can of soda, etc.. However, these doctors tell you that caffeine is bad and blah blah blah. WHATEVER. I'm in my Third Trimester. I have definitely had more than 12 fl oz of soda in more than one day (not every day, mind you, only when I feel that headache coming on), and this baby is still as healthy and active as any other cute wittle scheiss. Do not be afraid of caffeine. Quit only if YOU want to quit, not because the doctor said "you should limit your amount". Bah. They also told my friend to stop smoking, but if you stop smoking, it could put the baby into shock. So don't look at those "what smoking does to babies" posters at OBGYN. They're there to scare you.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffiene.....A....Drug????? REALLY??? I think that is a bit overboard. I have some caffiene, this is my first pregnancy, and I am trying to be extremely careful to take care of my baby, & me. I think if caffiene was that big of a deal, or a drug, there would be more peeps talking about it, more hype. My Dr. hasnt made a big deal about it, and until he does, Im not going to worry about caffiene being a drug.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

The one negative thing I did hear about caffeine and babies is that studies show that women who consumed high levels of caffeine had crankier babies in the first few days out of the womb. I think listening to your doctor and limiting caffeinated beverages is the best choice. If you can go cold turkey, more power to you. I personally love caffeine a lot, and will find it hard to eliminate it completely when I get pregnant. Just be reasonable!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I cut out coffee completely. Thanks to "The Skinny B*****s Bun in the Oven" book. They have a way of knocking sense into you. Anyway, not taking them THAT seriously, I continue to drink Raspberry Herbal Tea (1cup every now and then), Occasionally, I drink unsweetened McDonald's Iced Tea. I'd rather have watered down iced tea than a softdrink with high-fructose corn syrup. I weigh my options that way; a little caffeine VS high fructose... hmmm... gimmee the iced tea. My 8yr old daughter came out great and I was ignorant during that pregancy and drank pop and iced tea like crazy. She's an A student with a gentle UN-hyperactive demeanor.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My husband and I are just starting to think about TTC. Stopped BC and just using barrier for the time being. I'm just starting to look into all this health stuff and I work in the medical field and still never realized all the stuff people have to cut out during pregnancy! All of my siblings and siblings-in-law have kids already and even when they were going through pregnancy they didn't talk about it. Generally I'm very healthy, don't like fast food, don't drink soda, exercise daily. Drink 1 glass of wine a night, and have cut wayy back on that - now just once every other weekend. I do drink 1 cup of coffee a day - My doctor says 1 cup a day is ok, but I guess my feeling is if you can kick the habit, you might as well. Maybe I'm wrong, but I always figured as long as I'm just focusing on being healthy, I can still keep my normal eating habits (with exception of alcohol and now maybe caffeine)... This bump.com has def been an eye opener!!!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Mr dr actually recommended 1 cup caffeinated coffee or tea or soda a day, said it helps ease digestion and caffeine is slightly laxative that helps prevent constipation. It's not so fine to consume during first trimester when baby is developing all the vital organs but once past this stage it is ok.

caffeine doesn't hurt the baby unless that is all you have and eat way to much of. I love chocolate and am not giving that up period. I ate a big piece of chocolate cake the night before my 1st son was born and he turned out healthy 100%.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I suffer from just about everyday headaches and occasional migraines. I had cut out caffeine completely as soon as I learned that I was pregnant (and I wasn't a big coffee drinker or anything). My midwife suggested having green tea or black tea to help with the headaches and it actually has helped tremendously. She also said that the major risks involved with caffeine are in the first trimester and that I would have to have more than 8 cups of coffee to produce harmful effects. I was glad to hear that I didn't have to avoid it like the plague anymore and that I could have my green tea and its antioxidant effects back!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I don't drink any caffeinated sodas anyway (I'm a Sprite fan), so that part wasn't hard. However, I LIVE by coffee and hot tea, so it's been quite a shock to just quit cold turkey. Last night I had my first cup of decaff coffee, and it was fantastic. My doctor, my mother, my aunt, and several close friends (who are also mothers) have told me not to worry too much about the small amount of caffeine in decaff coffee. As long as you're not drinking a ton, one or two cups a day is perfectly fine. I'm also switching to decaff teas. If you can't quit cold turkey, substitute. Replace your sodas with caffeine free sodas, replace your regular coffee with decaff coffee, and do unsweet or decaff teas. And cut back! No, it won't taste the same, but it's for the best. I know it's hard on a lot of pregnant women to get used to so many new things all at once AND to change your diet, but it's definitely do-able. Good luck, everyone!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My OB/GYN approved a small cup of coffee each day, although I'm opting for two small cups a week tops and I'm in my first trimester week 12. DO NOT DRINK HERBAL TEAS, THEYCAN HARM THE BABY. THE ARE SEVERAL PREGNANCY TEAS SUCH AS A RASBERRY TEA THAT ARE SAFE. AVOID DECAF, I LEARNED THE HARD WAY THAT CHEMICALS ARE USED ON THE DECAF COFFEE TO REMOVE THE CAFFIENE. THE CHEMICALS ARE HARMFUL TO BABY. DIET SODA, ISN'T A GOOD CHOICE DUE TO ARTIFICAL SWEETENERS WATCH OUT FOR SPLENDA. Instead of my cup of regular coffee, I'm a coffee addict and miss it soooo much, I have been ordering tall lattes from starbucks with lots of milk and one shot of espresso for a treat. The milk is good for the baby, and I get to indulge. THINK OF THE FORMATION AND NEW ORGRANS YOUR BABY IS USING, CAFFIENE CAN BE HARSH FOR THE LITTLE KIDNEYS TO PROCESS. LIMIT CAFFIENE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE CHEAP CHOCOLATE USUALLY HAS LESS CAFFIENE THAN THE GOOD STUFF. MILK CHOCOLATE , CHOCOLATE ON COOKIES AND ICECREAM OFTEN IS A GOOD OPTION FOR A CHOCOLATE FIX WITHOUT A HIGH LEVEL OF CAFFIENE.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I had my coffee every morning. My Ob/Gyn knew. I was a huge caffeine freak being the graphic designer that I am. Pre pregnancy I would consume a few red bulls through out the day. I stopped drinking Red Bulls, limited my soda intake (love Cherry coke) to maybe one or two per week (if that!!). So, those one or two cups a coffee per morning was how I started my day. It helped the headaches that I would get from the lack of caffeine. I prefer a more mild coffee due to the acid. I had really bad acid reflux this time around. Again, I did consult with my Dr. and I believe he knows what he's talking about.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

How about this... instead of worrying so much about caffeine... just consume it in moderation... but ALSO and more importantly don't eat anything with high fructose corn syrup... if you look at the labels on everything that you eat or drink... you would be horrified to know that you are actually consuming TONS of it. That is by far way worse than a little caffeine. Watch Food Inc...... educate yourself on proper nutrition. Don't sweat a cup of coffee when you have eaten stuff that is way worse for you and you never even knew it. Trust me.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Its okay to have 300 mg/day. Basically each shot of espresso for example generally has 75mg which is equal to a pretty weak cup of coffee so if you love Starbucks the drinks g like this for bar drinks: Hot tall 75mg grande and venti 150mg. iced drinks tall 75mg grande 150mg and venti 225mg. i recommend that if you drink coffee during pregnancy, drink regular and do not switch to decaf. there are a few different methods of decaffeinating coffee beans and mostly it is done with a chemical wash. if you do like decaf read the bag and make sure it is the process of a wet wash (without the use of chemicals) an example is Decaf Sumatra from Starbucks. With soda I suggest switching to a selzter water and you can make your own flavors but adding different fruit. I also like to slice cucumber and put it in my water and seltzer for extra flavor and no caffeine. Teas you should be careful with, anything with bark in it is not recommended for pregnancy, just read the labels and ask your midwife or doctor.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Everything in moderation I say. Doctors will tell you to cut out anything and everything because there really isn't hard facts about just how much caffeine or other things like chocolate & sushi could harm your baby. When I feel the urge to satisfy my coffee craving, I have about 2-3 ounces and that will get me over the hump. Because it is a diuretic, it will pull calcium form you and your baby. Thankfully I drink tons of milk anyway.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Sometimes I wonder why the message boards on this site are full of ill-informed hardline conclusions and out of control group think. Then I read the articles and understand. This one is the worst I've seen so far. The suggestion that pregnant women should cut out all caffeine including chocolate is a little overboard, especially when the author suggests in the next breath that decaffeinated coffee is okay. Milk chocolate generally has less than five milligrams of caffeine per ounce, about the same amount as a cup of decaffeinated coffee. So while some studies have pointed to caffeine as being a problem at the 300mg+ level, you'd have to eat nearly 4 pounds of chocolate per day to possibly be affected. Maybe a pound a day of unsweetened dark chocolate. So as with most of the Bump articles, this raises a good question but then uses the same misinformation that most people already have to draw sketchy conclusions and communicate them authoritatively. It then gets either gleefully agreed with by people who followed similar advice or attacked by people who are insecure about the choices that they made in their own pregnancies. Do your own research.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I love my coffee...so I switched to decaf. There is no way to know how a certain substance will affect you during pregnancy. One person could drink a glass of wine every day of their pregnancy and have no ill effects, but another person could have one glass and her baby could end up with fetal alcohol syndrome. There is no way of knowing. Err on the side of caution.

My Aunt (who has 2 beautiful healthy children, 14 and 3) told me that while she was pregnant her doctor told her that if you drank lots of caffeine before you were pregnant that you should continue drinking it or it could cause more harm to your baby. I used to drink 6-7 if not more mt. dews a day, she said obviously thats overboard for even a non pregnant woman. Limit it to 2-3 a day and I will be fine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine is a drug (hence the withdrawels for those who intake a lot of it). It, like all drugs, has not been tested on pregnant women/their babies. It should be cut out completely. If your not able to quit, use with caution. Don't consider your morning coffee as your daily intake of fluid. Although you do get some hydration from it, it's negatives do not out weigh the positives. Think of it this way. When a doctor prescribes a drug for you he looks at your weight and determines the best dose based on your weight. Well that cup of coffee may not affect you very much, but that dose of caffeine (or any other drug) is akin to the baby receiving 20 time the amount because their weigh is so little. A bite of cake probably won't have any affect, but a Starbuck frapp probably will. Just because a person who is a major caffeine drinker had babies who turned out "fine" doesn't mean the babies were given the best chance possible or that no damage was done. Science supports women stopping their caffeine habit. Raspberry leaf teas is excellent for women health.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

With my 1st pregnancy I held off the caffeine until the 2nd trimester but after that I drank either an iced chai or cup of coffee almost everyday. My son is a healthy, happy and active little man! He was in no means behind on motor development--sat up at 5 months, crawled at 6 mo, stood at 7 mo and walked at 10 mo. Get my drift? Obviously it didn't hinder his development! With this 2nd pregnancy I drank caffeine from the start. I have stuck to the recommended limit of no more than 300 mg/day. I see an OB and an Internal doctor and both of them gave the okay on caffeine as long as I keep it limited! So pregnant mamas, don't stress and don't let opinions bother you. You decide what is right by talking with your doctor!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

i'd like to share my story... i am currently 37 weeks pregnant. early on in my pregnancy i read that under 200mg of caffeine per day was a safe amount. i'm not a coffee drinker, but i do enjoy certain soft drinks that have caffeine in them (namely diet coke.) so with this 200mg guideline in mind, i continued to drink a slight amount of caffeine per day. at about 20 weeks, they noticed that my baby's heart had an arrhythmia, meaning that his heart would beat very fast for 4 or 5 beats, and then beat very slow for a beat. i asked my doctor what could have caused it, or if there was anything i could do to "fix" it. he mentioned that caffeine can be a culprit, and suggested that i abstain from caffeine and chocolate. so i did. and at about 35 weeks, his arrhythmia had miraculously vanished completely, and his heartbeat was smooth and strong! everyone including the ultrasound tech, my midwife, and my high-risk-pregnancy dr. were all stunned! they concluded that it must have taken those 15 weeks to get the caffeine out of his system. so, in summary, based on my experience...just skip the caffeine during your pregnancy! it's not worth the potential negative effects on your baby's heart!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My midwife said caffine is fine in small amounts. Pre pregnancy I was a very heavy coffee drinker, but since being pregnant, I can handle having no caffie and not get migraines. I drink decaf and of course the occasional chocolate (brownie with cream cheese frosting sounds good!) If I do get a headache however, I do drink a small cup of regular coffee which works wonders for me and I personally feel more comfortable drinking a small amount of caffine over taking tylenol. I always drink lots of water which I too was told is important to drink extra water on the day you do have caffine. Best bet is to listen to your midwife/ob and do what you feel most comfortable with as well. My mom drank a coke every day she was pregnant and I came out fine :)

I have heard it is only "bad" because it is a diuretic, meaning it will pull water out of your body and make you pee more. As long as you drink enough water to keep hydrated and replace those fluids you will be fine. On the other hand, don't go crazy and have an energy drink that makes your heart race either.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

There is no reason to go cold turkey on caffeine for those who have. Obviously they are over the board scared. In the past, women used to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, their babies came out just fine. Take a look at your Grandparents, their mothers most likely drank wine and smoked cigarettes and your Grandparents were born just healthy. Heck, people have been drinking alcohol while pregnant for thousands of years and their babies have been born healthy. Over in other Countries, like France, they drink wine at dinner while pregnant. So to answer your question, caffeine is FINE. Yeah, sure, don't go overboard with it but it is ridiculous how scared women are to eat things today that women have been eating for thousands of years... If caffeine was not safe, every fetus that had contact with caffeine would be born with a defect.

Also keep in mind the amount of sugar you're drinking too. A can of coke contains 39g of sugar. American Heart Association (AHA) recommends how much sugar per day we should take, the recommended daily sugar intake, which is healthy and not harmful for the body, has been developed for men and women. How much sugar per day should we take: Recommended Daily Sugar Intake for Men: 36 grams or 9 teaspoons Recommended Daily Sugar Intake for Women: 20 grams or 5 teaspoons Recommended Daily Sugar Intake for Children: 12 grams or 3 teaspoons I'm 5 months with my second child and I have a cup of coffee a day about 2-3 times per week, same as I did with my first. I agree with what was said earlier, everything in moderation and remember every pregnancy is different. If you're at risk for premature birth, you should probably eliminate caffeine completely.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Cutting back is important- but you don't have to cut it out completely- remember even decaf coffee does have some caffeine. I am a huge coffee drinker- and my doctor said to drink no more than 3 cups of half caf coffee a week. Also most tea has some caffeine so look for 'herbal infusions' that is pretty much a caffeine free tea (not to be confused with decaf tea, which still has some caffeine) I suggest Tazo brand tea- they carry a good selection of herbal and caffeine free infusions.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was pregnant with my first and unfortunately lost the baby because I was drinking too much caffeine. I'm now pregnant again and its going well so far. I'm just sticking with water, juice, and milk. I didn't realize that there was caffeine in chocolate until I read this review and since its been candy season I have had my share of chocolate. I will definitely watch my intake of chocolate. Thank you for the advice above.

I didn't drink any caffeine my first trimester but I did ease up a little in my second & now I'm in my third trimester. I'll have a cup of coffee every now & then or a coke but not over doing it. It makes me too nervous! My baby girl is 31 weeks & as healthy as can be. Every pregnant lady knows it does get boring & old having to drink soo much water & other juices so if you're doctor gives you the okay have some!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm actually not a coffee person, so asking me to cut out caffeine drinks are totally fine for me. However, I'm into my 2nd trimester, my tension headache and migraine is crazier than ever. I tried stretching, massaging, pre-natal yoga, eating frequent snacks, drink more water... none of those help! :( I told my OB, and she actually suggested me to drink a little caffeine, as it dilates the blood vessels a bit. I drink half cup of small coffee, or take several sips of cola, and it works like a charm for me!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor emphasized the importance of cutting back caffeine in the first trimester especially, but said chocolate doesn't contain enough to really cause worry (unless you are eating bricks of it at a time.) Now that I am in the second trimester, I don't drink as much as I did pre-pregnancy, just because I got used to not having it in the first trimester. Now I drink tea a few times a week and if I am craving a latte, I don't deprive myself... I just don't go for the triple shots like I used to :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I am on baby number three- and inbetween this pregnancy and the last one, I really bumped up my caffeine intake daily. I needed it. Two kids under the age of three, I needed an extra kick in the morning to get me going. When I became pregnant with baby three, I knew I needed to limit my caffeine intake significantly. I tried to cut it out completely, but that ended poorly with a daily withdrawl in the form of a terrible headache that would NOT go away. I drink one can of soda or have one cup of coffee a day. It works for me, and I don't get the headaches. I don't recommend drinking any before a sonogram, though. My kids would NOT hold still for a sono and we had to go back for several others. :)

The March of Dimes advises women to limit their caffeine intake to less than 200 mg per day (that's about one 12-ounce cup of coffee). This recommendation was prompted by the results of a study published in the March 2008 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology that showed that moms-to-be who consumed 200 mg or more of caffeine a day had double the risk of miscarriage compared with those who had no caffeine.krill oil

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My personal opinion is that your baby is gonna be born however God wants your baby to be born. There is nothing you can or don't do that is going to affect this... Now I am not saying to go out and smoke crack just because but don't stress your self out over it... I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and drank any where from 6-12 cans of coke a day and my daughter was born perfectly healthy yet there are celebrities that go to the best doctors eat the best diets and take the best prenatal vitamins and the babies are born with autism or other various diseases.... When I tried to quit smoking with my daughter I almost had a miscarriage. If I even went more than four hours with out a cigarette my stomach would start cramping then I would run to the doctors and tell them... My doctor finally gave up and said that I am taking the risk of causing damage to my baby by smoking but my daughter would not be here today if I quit smoking... I am a proud mother of a 3 year old beautiful little girl who is healthy with no allergies or anything else wrong with her. DO NOT JUDGE someone else if they decide to do whatever they want with their bodies and their babies because in the long run if anything happens that parent will pay for the mistake. Calm down enjoy this time and stop being stressed out... THE STRESS IS WAY MORE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR BABY'S HEALTH THAN CAFFEINE IS....

I drink lattes, dew and cherry coke and dr. Pepper during my pregnancies and I'm on my third pregnancy now. All my kids have come out healthy and happy so far (single birth and twin birth). The key is moderation and also getting water in. I definitely don't drink a latte every day but I treat myself once in awhile. I think it's totally fine! Just listen to your body and if it's causing problems then stop!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

You have a choice. You're baby does not. So why even take the risk of any of it? Smoking can cause low birth weight, asthma, and preterm labor. Why would you be okay with taking that risk? It's selfish... And caffeine increases your child's chances of ADHD. That's not fair to them. They'll struggle in school, and have problems the rest of their lives. You don't have to quit everything, but remember, YOU decided to get pregnant, so YOU have to be the responsible one. You don't have to quit everything, but you should at least try to give your child the best life.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Cut the caffeine out ladies! You don't need it and there are healthy alternatives to fill the place. Use natural energy boosters instead... Fresh fruit for a healthy sugar high in the afternoons when you're feeling like you've run out of gas. Drink lots of water and eat small 2-3 hundred calorie meals every 3 hours to keep your metabolism high. You'll be better for the change in routine both during your pregger months and after. I feel great, am meeting my nutritional requirements and sleeping heavily through the night. Oh, one more thing Momma's, make sure you're getting at least 30 minutes of light to medium cardio a day (try for low-impact, walking, stationery bike or elliptical are best). I wasn't on a work-out schedule my first trimester either because of laziness or nausea, I couldn't tell you honestly which... but I feel 10X better, more like my old self now and I'm sure it's the reason I'm sleeping so well and feeling like I have energy to spare again in my 6th month now. PS I’ve stopped having leg cramps in the middle of the night since starting to eat banana’s as a mid-afternoon snack.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I used to be addicted to caffeine and would drink an average of 12 coca colas a day. After 6 years of this, I ended up with an ulcer. The good part is that I had to stop drinking it well before I got pregnant, but I've learned so much about caffeine since then and it's just not good for you or the baby. I know some women can drink it and the baby is fine, but all the women in my family (whether related by blood or not) that drank moderate amounts of caffeine regularly during pregnancy ended up with fussy babies that were slightly addicted to the cafeine, just like their mommies, and took longer to start sleeping through the night. It's tough, believe me from a certified former addict!, but I just don't think it's worth it.

With my first pregnancy, I allowed myself 3 to 4 cups of black tea a day, and an occasional can of soda. My pregnancy was fine. So, this time I'm doing the same thing. There's no need to cut it out completely, just aim for keeping it under that 300mg mark just to be safe, especially in the 1st trimester. Also, too much caffeine can give the fetus the jitters, just something to consider.

We are not yet pregnant-- Trying though- -I am a big soda and Iced Coffee Drinker.. I have been trying to cut back now so that it wont be as hard when I am pregnant-- I know it is very controversial and I think it depends on the couple / Mother-to-be's feelings on the sitution. Myself, personally, know many women who drank caffine throughout their pregancy and have had happy healthy children. and know of a few women who did everything by the book and one of the babies was in the hospital the full first year of her life. I am not sure I can take that risk. I have been drinking much more water lately instead of grabbing a soda while at my desk.

My Dr. put me on one cup of Caffeine a day during my first term because of headaches. The Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor- that means it closes up your blood vessels, which will help with enlarged blood vessels which is causing the headaches. With that being said I also drink extra water because caffeine can cause dehydration.

I was a smoker, enjoyed wine ALOT, and survived daily on caffiene. I gave up all three without blinking, despite numerous tries to quit smoking in the past. It's been three weeks, and honestly the caffiene has been the hardest. But you just do what you have to do. It's not forever, and I'm still so early that why risk it? Once I get out of the frist trimester I might go back to an occassional deliious caffienated drink. I think it's everyone's choice, what works for me doesn't work for another. But, as long as you do your best that's all your baby needs:)

Anyone who is worried about the affects of caffeine doing pregnancy should conduct their own research and talk to their provider. I personally decided that I would cut back from my caffeine intake.

McCormickbaby3 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Didn't have caffeine during my 1st pregnancy, nor with my second and my now third. Why risk it? Not everybody reacts to caffeine in the same way; yes, caffeine constricts blood vessels and can cause high blood pressure which is a no-no for the unborn child (baby gets less blood supply and in effect, oxygen supply from mom) Now, about the soda, you may want to consider the sugar content or what sugar substitute is in it (if you are on diet soda) as not all sugar substitutes are good for pregnant women. I've always gone for the caffeine-free soda and not everyday. Like coffee, sodas are concentrated drinks and will dehydrate you. Unless you have gestational diabetes or an abnormal OGTT, the occasional can won't hurt :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I work work for a Teratogen Information Service and honestly some caffeine is ok as long as it is ok in small amount. No more than 200-300mg a day. An 8 oz cup of coffee has 135mg of caffeine in it. Caffeine does have the potential to harm the baby if to much is ingested. Please think about what is safe for your baby. By no means can anyone tell you what to put into your body but all I am trying to do is provide an actual numeric number than just saying "only drink a little" "only drink a cup of this" or what newly pregnant women usually hear. Teratogenic effects are something no mom ever wants to impose on their child.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My opinion... Like some have said back in the past before all these rules baby's were born healthy and normal. The new diseases we have now were unheard of... my doc made a very good point when I asked this same question. 20 years ago was there autism? 20 years ago kids were going through puberty between 12-14 years of age. Now kids are going through puberty between 8-10! I understand the more knowledge the better but if you are going to worry about how much caffeine your drinking then you better start worrying about the hormones you are eating in your meats. My Doc brought up a very good point 20 years ago cancer was unheard of and diabetes was rare. 20 years ago our food was pure! Animals were not being given drugs and hormones! Personally I think if you are going to take the "research" on caffeine and say no but you drink diet what about the aspertame in that? 10 years from now there will be a study about how aspartame and splenda and all the artificial sweeteners are bad but we use them as a substitute? Stick with the all natural! Everything is ok in moderation. My grandmother was blown away at all the restrictions there is now on pregnancy.... she drank 1-2 pots of coffee a day with at least 4 glasses of tea and had 9 healthy baby's! The internet and all this research is our worst enemy! I know personally i drink 1-2 cups of tea a day. When I was pregnant with my son all I could keep down was coke and trust me I ate a ton of chocolate thanks to dairy queen being on the same street and he was just fine! Why drive yourself crazy seriously?! Our parents drank coffee and tea! Their parents did too and obviously its not that big of a deal. Remember there was "research" saying wearing denim caused cancer!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was a Dr. Pepper addict before I got pregnant. Luckily, my boyfriend and I planned to get pregnant in March sometime and so I started cutting down on the caffeine in December. The Dr. Pepper rotted out my teeth, gave me sebastious(sp?) schists on my breasts and arms and it was time to quit as it was. I still have not be successful in quitting completely. I have cut back immensely, down to like no more than one or two a week and my boyfriend is getting better about just not buying it for me all together but the problem is I crave it since I got pregnant. Here was the kicker to get me to quit completely. I found out in one of my pregnancy books that a study being conducted by a University shows that there is a possible link between caffeine intake during pregnancy and NOT ONLY premature birth, but also still borns, and infants who die of SIDS. They are still trying to prove it though, and the book did not list the university. So yeah.. I haven't had one since I read that two weeks ago, and instead if I am really craving dr. pepper I drink a caffeine free root beer, cream soda, or sprite.

I still indulge in a cup of tea in the morning. It really helps me start my day, especially when I've had a bad night's sleep (just about every night now!), plus it gets my digestive system moving. It helped a lot with my frequent headaches at the beginning too. I drink decaf at home though since I'm just drinking tea for the taste. Also I used to drink a lot of pop. I didn't touch it during the first trimester since it made me nauseous, no one could believe it. Now I usually have a can with lunch. I don't see a problem with it in small amounts.

I just spoke to my Dr. about this and she said that caffeine also increases the babies heartbeat and in short can make it work overtime, so it isn't the best idea to help baby become the strongest it can and to develop their little heart correctly.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Hats off to anyone who read every post in this thread! I was looking through here since I've been looking for a conclusive answer on the subject--hasn't happened yet. I'm 6 weeks and a regular tea drinker (living in Scotland does that to you). I'm trying to cut back gradually on my caffeine intake because I'm at that paranoid stage of first trimester. It has not been easy at all, especially since I'm in grad school and surrounded by dozens of coffee and tea drinkers, and bored out of my mind going through material. I think the jury is out on HOW caffeine is harmful to a pregnancy, so they warn women in a general sense to not over-do it. I will say that after reading some of these posts, some women seem to be confused and think that coffee and soda have different effects on the baby (aside from soda raising your blood glucose, which is also bad) they are the same. Ca mobilization from the bones happens when diuresis occurs in the kidney, so since caffeine is a DIURETIC, all sources of it will have the vasoconstriction, the increased Ca wastage and the prolonging of the effects of adrenaline in the body (which makes you alert). ALL of that being said, I think I agree with the "what works for some doesn't work for all" manifesto. Those who experienced complications and happened to be coffee drinkers could have had something else going on, there's really no one to say exactly what the problem was. And remember (geez I'm on a soapbox and it's only my first pregnancy)! You can have the best intentions and do all the right things and still things can go wrong with your pregnancy. Do what works best for you and feel secure in the decision. C'est la vie!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was a HUGE coffee/Diet Coke drinker. I'm talking 2 cups of coffee in the morning and 4-6 Diet Cokes throughout the day. I asked my Dr about it, and she said a cup of coffee and 1-2 cans of diet coke are fine but not to exceed that if possible. She was more concerned about the caffeine withdrawls I would have by quitting cold turkey, which is actually worse for the baby due to the stress it causes. My pregnancy is progressing well/normally and I'm 4 1/2 months along. I wouldn't freak yourself out.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

It continues to amaze me how high-strung and obsessive people can be about the do's and don't's during pregnancy. It's likely that you're doing more harm to your baby by stressing over all of this stuff than it would be to just HAVE A FREAKING CUP OF COFFEE ALREADY! I'm so tired of all of this anxiety!! You're not going to kill your baby. Relax. Take a breath.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

In my first pregnancy I avoided coffee but now that I am on pregnancy two, it is a challenge. When you have a 2 yr old running you ragged, I am exhausted and I found I just could not do without some caffeine here and there. My doctor had told me that if you keep it to 200mg a day, it is fine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I drink 2 cups of decaf every day. My baby is healthy and growing perfectly. Her heart rate is at 141 which is completely normal. All I did was switch to decaf but other than that I still enjoy my 2 cups everyday. Everyone needs to chill out.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I have asked my doctor a few times about caffeine just because I really want to make sure everything is ok. Today I asked her again and this is what she told me. 1-2 cups of regular coffee a day is fine. 3-4 glasses of iced tea is fine and 4-6 cans or glasses of pop is fine. Now granted when I say glasses or cups I don't mean a bucket. She also said that caffeine restricts your veigns and increases your heart rate, but as long as you don't go over the advised limit you won't really cause any harm to your baby. Just make sure to stay up on water, juice and milk also. I've been drinking iced tea and coke pretty much my whole pregnancy and just limiting it to either a large from McDonald's once in a while to maybe a can of pop a day. I'm at 27 weeks now and everything seems to be going just fine. So, don't beat yourself up about it as long as you don't over do it. If you prefer not to drink caffeine or your doctor tells you other limits than def listen to those.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Coffee is, for many people, more than a beverage: it's a ritual. As such, I don't see the need to completely cut out your morning cup of coffee. I've simply switched to half-caf. I don't feel like I'm missing out on a thing! With half-caffiene, you won't experience the headaches from going cold-turkey, and you don't have to give up what is for most people such a comforting ritual. Most of the drinks you'd get at a coffee shop are available half-caffienated as well--just ask!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine is found in varying quantities in the seeds, leaves, and fruit of some plants, where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain insects feeding on the plants, as well as enhancing the reward memory of pollinators. It is most commonly consumed by humans in infusions extracted from the seed of the coffee plant and the leaves of the tea bush, as well as from various foods and drinks containing products derived from the kola nut. Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I worked in maternity for 5 years, have 2 children, and am expecting Baby #3. I am by no means an expert, but after speaking to my doctor and doing hours of extensive research, I have come up with what I think is an acceptable "caffeine intake schedule". I get migraines, and after suffering from zero caffeine intake for the first trimester, I decided to add it bak to my diet. I brew it at home and make it very light because I like it black, but even if you don't, I'd brew it a little light anyway. A small Starbucks latte has 75 mg of caffeine... Well under the recommended max of 150-200. If I have a migraine, I will go as far as to get a medium, and drink it throughout the day... It has 2 shots, or 150 mg. my ObGyn said that the migraine medication I have been taking for years is the same one they give pregnant women who get migraines, and the main component, or ingredient, is caffeine. I don't eat chocolate regularly, not even close, and soda is a no no for me... If its not diet, it's just empty calories that are going to add unnecessary pounds to your body while you are expecting, and that can cause problems for baby's blood sugar levels when he or she is born. Diet soda has aspartame in it, which turns into formaldehyde in the body... Not good for you or baby, and this is moving from someone who drank at least 2 cans of diet coke a day before she knew she was expecting. This is just my experience. Everyone's is different. If quitting altogether makes you feel better, do it. But don't judge those who can't. You don't know their situation. My doctor told merit is better for me and the baby to have a limited amount of caffeine than it is to put my body through the stress of constant migraines that confine me to bed.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I am definitely a coffee drinker. I must have my cup of coffee every morning when I wake up. Sometimes a second cup is needed depending on how my day is going. During my pregnancy with my daughter, giving up coffee was probably the hardest thing! I tried cold turkey but the withdrawals were unbearable and I was scared to take medication for my headache. My doctor assured me that one cup of coffee a day wasn't harmful, so that's what I did until I eventually downgraded to decaf, and then chocolate milk. I needed something to get my day started! Honestly, I felt good not relying on coffee anymore and told myself that I'd keep off the habit....but after sleepless nights with a newborn, I resorted right back to it and my habit became worse. Now I'm pregnant with #2 and the idea of breaking the habit again is tough. Sigh.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

for most women, up to 200 mg of caffeine (the amount in 12 ounces or two cups of coffee) is recognized as safe during pregnancy. However, some commercial coffee is stronger than others ie. 8 oz of starbucks coffee is about 165 mg of caffeine and you should adjust your intake accordingly. More than 4 cups of coffee (and the associated caffeine intake) has been linked to higher potential risk of miscarriage.

I've never been a big coffee drinker but my OB/GYN says that I can have {at most} an 8 oz cup of coffee per day. So what I've been doing is treating myself once a week to organic coffee from Coco's. So yummy.

My doctor told me caffeine is okay (of course in moderation) but NO ESPRESSO. There was a study done recently that cleared this, but of course...again, everything in moderation (which is why espresso is not allowed, too much caffeine in one serving).

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I think it is funny that people get so offended when people say that you should not drink caffeine. The fact is that it is a drug just like nicotine, both stimulate your brain. For the people who ask how do I know this it is common sense but I also have helped with and read lots of research related to children's developing brain. The sad part is that most people would not think about drinking any alcohol even though newer studies show that it is okay in small amounts. Just remember that caffeine is a drug it is not like fat or oil from bad foods. Make your own decision because probably just like alcohol in small amounts it is okay. But do know there is limited studies of the effects probably because over half of the US is addicted to caffeine.
