Can pregnant women do Pilates?

Re: Can pregnant women do Pilates?

The Bump Expert

Yes! Pilates is a non-impact workout that increases flexibility, strength, and muscle tone. Because it focuses on your core, practicing Pilates on a regular basis can improve posture, alleviate backaches, and ultimately help with labor and delivery. Plus, it will boost your mood and energy level. Choose a prenatal class if you can. Otherwise, let the instructor know you're pregnant so she can help you modify or skip any risky moves.

Remember, once you’re in your second trimester, avoid exercising on your back. The weight of your uterus can press on the vena cava, which is the main vein that carries blood from your lower body to your heart. Compressing it can interfere with the circulation of both you and baby.

re: Q: Pregnant Pilates?

Nothing is better than Pilates. I am 17 weeks this week and have only gained a few pounds and 1 1/2 inches around the abdomen. I feel great and believe that it is a direct result from using the reformer. I would not recommend mat classes in your 2nd tri. It's hard on the back.

Also, if you can't find a prenatal class in your area, try Niece Pecenka's Pilates During Pregnancy DVD. It's a great workout--I've been doing it throughout my pregnancy and am 27 weeks and still feel great and haven't put on much non-belly weight.

I just stopped my class only because we did so much on our backs. But my instructor recommended that I find moves online for pregnancy.

Q&A: Doing pilates during pregnancy?

I am 27 weeks and still doing pilates. I go to a Pilates Studio and work in both group classes and privates with an instructor. Some moves are tweaked now that my bump is larger but most exercises are great! We do mostly reformer mixed in with some matwork - but i do avoid laying flat on my back for any extended period. I havent gained much weight (about 4 pounds) but my OB is very happy with my babys size and development. I truly feel pilates has helped make this pregnancy more comfortable and healthier for me! I have also been going to my twice weekly spin classes, but i am sad to say that I am now giving that up in exchange for walking because its a little awkward with the growing bump.
