Are Deodorant and Antiperspirant Safe to Use During Pregnancy?

Can I keep using my favorite deodorant during pregnancy (I hope so!)?

Re:

The Bump Expert

Look closely at the label of your favorite deodorant now that you’re pregnant. You want to steer clear of parabens, which are preservatives that have been linked to birth defects. And anything containing synthetic fragrance is definitely questionable. Other ingredients to stay away from in your underarm products are PEG 20, propylene glycol, triclosan and sodium benzoate.

Another big issue with deodorant (especially the kind that’s an antiperspirant too) is that the aluminum-based compounds that prevent you from becoming a sweaty mess are believed by some to be potentially cancer-causing. More research needs to be performed on the subject, but that’s pretty scary! The major problem with that? The aluminum really works to keep you from sweating! We tried out a bunch of different natural deodorants on the market and are sad to say it was tough to find anything that kept us as dry and smell-free. However, we did really like Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant Stick; Lavanila’s Healthy Deodorant; and Nature’s Gate Chamomile & Lemon Verbena Deodorant Stick. If you want to go the natural route, try them!

The salt stone deodorant is also safe to use and is approved by the breast cancer society. IT WORKS TOO! I was shocked! Now its the only thing I use!

Are Deodorant and Antiperspirant Safe to Use During Pregnancy?

I asked my doctor if perfumes are safe to use during pregnancy and she replied that they are safe, my smell sensitivity is heightened and if the smell is too strong I don`t feel good. Even when my older son uses a perfumes and the smell is too strong I try not to get near him because sometimes that strong smell gives me a headache.

I tried a myriad of medicated, natural, and even homemade stuff and nothing worked for me until I found the DeodoMom cream and became a life-long customer. Besides water, it contains only one other ingredient which is actually safe enough to eat! It’s completely free of nasty chemicals (aluminum, alcohol, glycols, dyes, parabens, …) and even free of scent/fragrance which is great if you have a sensitive skin. The best part is that it WORKS! And it works in TWO ways: completely stops the odor (and although it’s not advertised as such, it actually stops the wetness for me too), and no more irritated skin even when applied over freshly shaved underarm! The one drawback: it’s sold online only (www.30SomeWeeks.com), but they usually ship within 24 hours. Good luck!

The Bump says to "Stay away from propylene glycol." Yet it's the first ingredient in the Tom's of Maine deodorant that they recommend in the very next paragraph???

I was as to go sans deodorant for quite a while during pregnancy... And I'm no couch potato... Up until a month ago I was sweating in a deli 40-50 hours a week And going to school full time.... I had tried not using deodorant 6 months earlier and found that I, for some reason, did not smell... Soon went with it. Maybe just try going without it first... It may be scary because no one like to smell... But you may just surprise yourself... Now... I'm 8 months pregnant and I think my hormones changed or something... I'll be looking into the natural variety ASAP. Lol. Hope this helps!

There is a 100% natural scentless deodorant which is 24 hours or more effective, its water based, so no oiliness and mess, it has dead sea minerals, organic food grade ingredients, and vitamins, no aluminum, no baking soda, I read the ingredients list, and its clean from nasty chemicals, my wife is using it also while breast feeding, my family too, and they are vegans, and nature freaks. good enough for me. www.onlygoodnessinside.com

Tom's of Maine recently came out with an antiperspirant, I think it's called Naturally Dry? While is free of the preservatives, it does still contain an aluminum-based active ingredient. But if that's not a big deal for you and you're mostly looking to steer clear of the preservatives then give it a try!
