Q&A: Can I use a vibrator while pregnant?

Is it okay to use a vibrator while I’m pregnant? I haven’t asked my doctor yet. I am only seven weeks along, and I have already used one once. -- anonymous user

The Bump Expert

Unless your doctor or health care provider has specifically asked you to refrain from sexual activity due to potential complications with your pregnancy, it should be absolutely fine to use a vibrator.

Many couples enjoy having a full sexual relationship right up to the birth of their baby. And when you think that penetrative sex involves active thrusting, the vibrator seems mild in comparison. Also there is no reason you shouldn’t use a vibrator externally on your clitoral region, as that’s a very good way to bring yourself to climax (if you have a high-risk pregnancy, though, check with your doc first). If you have a clean bill of health and your pregnancy is going swimmingly, you still might find you’re more satisfied having sex with your husband or using the vibrator internally.

As with any activity during pregnancy, use your judgment about how you’re feeling to determine what you do. But don’t let your partner miss out on the fun -- he may want to get involved in the action too!

I have so much fun with my vibrator...more fun than sex with the hubby. however, I won't tell him that! I too have very minor cramping, but it feels more like muscle spasms than cramping. I hope the baby enjoys it as much as I do.

What about sex toys that go beyond vibration? I have a "rabbit"-like vibrator that both I like to use and my husband likes to use on me. It has the vibrator function, but also the penetrating part of the toy twists. Is this safe to use or should we should we stick strictly to vibrators and "regular" sex?

It doesn't matter what kind of vibrator you use.

Q&A: Can I use a vibrator while pregnant?

i use my toys day in and day out and we are now 28 weeks with twins. I am a Pure Romance consultant so my job is to educate women about things like this. More than anything....ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR TOYS ARE CLEAN!!!!! A dirty toy is really the most harm a toy can do. Its correct, whem you orgasm your cervix and uterus do contract (pulsate) and with the Uterus now with occupancy, it will feel a bit uncomfortable but theres no harm. Anal play is safe now too especially since those ,muscles back there are little more relaxed now a days it will make it a bit easier...ALWAYS use a lubricant (No vaseline or lotion) but an actully lubricant to sexaual play. If anyone has more questions about toy saftey and pregnancy, lubircants or just toys and etc feel free to email me milynngraves@pureromance.com. I will happy to assist

Q&A: Can I use a vibrator while pregnant?

i was wondering if it was safe as well.. im 15 wks pregnant. and i notice that evry time we have intercourse i sometimes bleed. dr said it was normal but it scares me. so i thought if i can use and external vibrator once in a while without penetration it might be better for me. i have heard though that vibrators are forbidden during pregnancy because the high climax it gives you can cause you to go into labor. so what is the real answer???? are they safe???

Is it ok to use a silicone based lubricant?

Q&A: Can I use a vibrator while pregnant?

Lubricants are safe a VERY good to use. However there are some products that are meant to create a tighter feel. These products should be used with great caution and are NOT suggested to be used closer to your due date. They actually cause the vaginal walls to swell and tighten. If you are getting close to having a baby the last thing you want to do is tighten your vaginal walls. Vibrators, sex, and anal play are ALL SAFE! My husband worried about this during our first pregnancy. He wanted me to ask my doctor if our unborn son could get injured by us having sex or if his penis could hurt him. LOL I told him not to worry and I didn't need to ask my doctor that because he's not THAT well endowed and our son won't have eye damage or cranial damage from his penis. I love my husband!

CHECK YOUR TOYS!!! I used to work for a local couple's store and make sure that your toys are high quality...if they smell like a shower curtain DO NOT USE. It is a chemical called phalates and causes autism and infertility in babies... I recommend a medical grade silicone they run more expensive (usually $100+) but sooooo worth it...Like anything DO YOUR RESEARCH!

You can call 1-800-733-4727 for free and confident information. I call them weekly with questions about things I can and cannot use while pregnant and they don't get annoyed. :)
