Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

We've been trying to get pregnant, so I started cutting back on my Zoloft dose and was doing very well. However, I've starting having relapses, but now that I'm not 100% sure I'm not pregnant, I won't take the Zoloft. Are there any anti-depressants that wouldn't harm a baby?

The Bump Expert

This is a tough decision that many women have to make during pregnancy or while planning a pregnancy. The best advice I can give you is to talk to your health care provider immediately regarding your situation. The risks and benefits of taking any antidepressant medications need to be weighed carefully for each individual. You should mention that you have been experiencing relapses of your symptoms, so not taking your medication may not be the best option for you even though you may be pregnant. In fact in some situations you may be putting your health in danger.

Often as women our first instinct is to do anything to protect our babies, even suffer through miserable symptoms in order to protect our babies from the possible side effects of medications. However, it is important to consider that your baby needs a mommy that is healthy physically and emotionally. Again, I urge you to contact your healthcare provider today for their advice regarding this and all medications you may be taking.

re: Q: Can I Take Antidepressants?

This is a good response to tihs question, but I also think it would be good to mention to current research that shows that several types of antidepressants are safe for use during pregnancy. It is also important to mention the information that exists regarding the increased risk for Post-Partum Depression in women with a history of depressive episodes and anxiety disorders. Some research suggests that women who remain on anti-depressants throughout pregnancy, or who begin anti-depressants in the third triemester, can reduce their risk of PPD or reduce the severity of PPD symptoms. Thanks for addressing this important isssue!

re: Q: Can I Take Antidepressants?

I have been taking antidepressants for many years and have severe depression. I went off anti-depressants 2 years ago to see if I would be okay without them, but I was not. My psychiatrist has advised my OB that I should continue to take them throughout my pregnancy as there is greater risk to the fetus if I don't take them (because I don't eat well, sleep well, or take very good care of myself when I'm depressed). My psychiatrist has recommended the site www.womensmentalhealth.org as a good resource and I found their information very helpful.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

I'm almost 27 weeks pregnant and I am currently taking zoloft aswell. Mr doctor and pharmacist looked thoroughly at the risks (which were minimal in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters), and decided that there was no reason as to why I shouldnt take them. I find that I take better care of myself and the baby when Im not worrying about everything 24/7.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

I've been on Lexapro for a year now and I'm now 4 weeks pregnant. Depression runs in my family on my dad's side and I also have it. About 6 months ago I told my Dr. I was planning n TTC. Me made a face and thought I should try to go off as soon as I found out I was pregnant. He also mentioned that I shouldn't be on the medication during my 3rd trimester. I don't know what to do, if I go off the medication, the depression and panic attacks comes right back in full force. This medication is also hard to get off of, the withdrawl symptoms are horrible. I tried to quit but got physically ill.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

My husband and I are thinking of starting a family, so I talked to my OBGYN at my last appt. a couple weeks ago and she said it was fine to continue taking Lezapro throughout a pregnancy. I am also on Blood Pressure meds (Toprol XL) and again, she looked it up and said it would probably be just fine for that one too.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

It's important to know which anti-depressants you can take though. I am taking Prozac now (because we're going to ttc soon) but know that Zoloft and Prozac are the most studied in terms of pregnancy. I was on Pristiq, which I liked, but it's too new know the risks in regards to pregnancy. With me, it's panic/anxiety disorder that I deal with but anti-depressants are what they use to treat them. My doctor and I believe it's a bigger risk for me to have untreated anxiety than to take the meds while pregnant.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

Thank you! I feel a little bit better knowing that other people are continuing their Lexapro while TTC and/or are pregnant. I have a panic/anxiety disorder and know I will not be able to handle the attacks that would be prompted during pregnancy if I were untreated.

re: Q: Can I take antidepressants?

I think it is definately something you need to discuss with your doctor and know yourself. I was diagnosed as bipolar about 4 months before becoming pregnant. We were not trying for a baby so getting on a different medication ahead of time was not an option. After discussing it with my doctor I decided that the risk of trying to find a new medication (my old one was NOT an option) was more than trying to regulate my own swings, I figured that my moods would be up and down anyway with the pregnancy hormones. However I do not have bad down swings and mostly only suffer from manic phases when I am unable to sleep (who can anyway :) ). So we are just dealing with symptoms as they arise and she prescribed a sleep aid so that I could get some rest.

I had SEVERE ppd after my first pregnancy and was a complete mess, memory loss couldnt drive, read or write etc. My dr sadi I absolutely have to stay on ZOLOFT whille im pregnant this time( and I agree). My dr sadi she has been prescribing it for over 15yrs and believes it totally safe.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I took zoloft the whole time I was pregnant and I have to take it during this one. The hormones make my depression worse. You may not be able to take as large a dosage as before, but you shouldn't stop them unless a dr tells you to. You could end up doing more harm than good to your baby and yourself.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I am wondering if there is anybody out there that is pregnant or ttc that has had a history of eating disortders (specifically anorexia)? I was diagnosed with anorexia and depression when I was 16 (I am now 24) and am absolutely terrified about how I will be when I get pregnant. I am considered 'recovered' for the most part now (i.e. healthy weight) but I still deal with depression and horrible body image on a daily basis. I am also very concerned with post-partum depression after the baby is born considering I already struggle with it now.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I am bipolar type 2 which is the worst kind I have severe to borderline suicidal tendencies when the troughs of depression hit me. I have been on Lamictal and an old drug called Desipramine for the past 8 yrs but stoped cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. My psychiatrist said that both of these drugs are safe since the lamictal is for seizures and commonly used during pregnancy. I have a fetal specialist who also advised me about these meds and said that the risks were less than 5% for any development issues. I chose to stay off my meds for now but may need to resume them in the future and for post pardum when things can get really bad. I 'd strongly suggest that you talk to a fetal specialist and a psychiatrist (mine specializes in women with mental illness and pregnancy) RE meds and the pros and cons and maybe changing to different ones that are safer. I have done much research on this and I strongly advise to NOT cold turkey your meds I really paid for it but you can ween off them-talk to your DR's ! The other thing is I can take Lamictal and still breastfeed.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I have been taking psychiatric meds since I was fifteen (fifteen years ago.) I am currently ten weeks pregnant, after being told for years that pregnancy was not in my future. Then I moved (and found myself monetarily challenged) and had to go to a state provided mental health center for my psychiatric care. They were so laid back! Soon I had a plan for stepping down my meds and coming off of klonopin (a huge no-no during pregnancy.) When I was ready to start my family I worked with my psychiatrist and an OB and am now on Wellbutrin SR, Zoloft, and Vistaril for sleep. Pregnancy seems to agree with me, as my mood has stabilized and my anxiety is very manageable. Of course, I know that different doctors have different opinions on these type of meds during pregnancy, since both that I take are class C, but I feel good about it. Also, most health providers I talk to refer to Wellbutrin and Zoloft as being "safe" during pregnancy. But to all those out there who just aren't sure whether they can balance their mental illness and a pregnancy, believe me, you won't know until you try!

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I have been on a combination of Welbutrin and Zoloft for the past 8 years. After finally becoming pregnant, I quizzed my doctor about my medications. Taking Zoloft during pregnancy definitely comes with a risk - a risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, or PPHN. However, in a mother that is not taking Zoloft, the risk of PPHN is 1%. In a mother taking a Zoloft, the risk is 3%. That is not enough of a jump to merit coming off of the medication if your depression is severe enough that it can't be controlled through lifestyle changes. In my case, I suffer from depression and anxiety attacks. While the depression is a concern, the biggest concern regarding taking me off of my medications is the anxiety. A strong panic attack could cause a miscarriage. Talk to your doctor before making a decision. Being unmedicated could be more harmful to your baby than taking the medication!

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I'm really glad that this discussion is up here. I am afraid I may have to switch OBs. Mine seems very opposed to me taking any kind of antidepressant at all, and I can't really even talk to her about risks and benefits. I don't want to do anything to harm the baby, of course! But I need to know all the facts before I can know what is the right thing to do, because relapse for me is so awful that it jeapordizes my work, my health, my relationships. And I'm concerned that with all the changes my body is going through, that going through med withdrawal at the same time could really compound things. But to know if it is better for me and the baby to stay on or go off, I really need more information and it is so hard to come by. Has anyone found any really useful books, websites, etc?

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I was on Celexa for over a year after post partum depression with my second baby and decided to go off of it last summer when I decided to get pregnant, under the advice of my NP. I went the first twenty weeks of my pregnancy medication free, my good husband bless his heart, put up with "sad couch wife". It was really affecting every aspect of my life so my OB/GYN and I opted to start Celexa again. Oh...what a difference! I am now functioning! I had forgotten what a better mom, wife, and person I am when I take care of myself. He told me that studies show there can actually be a greater risk of baby needing antidepressants later on in life if mom is under treated during pregnancy and early childhood because the infant in utero is not getting a proper balance of chemicals and in early child hood...well...a depressed mom does not create a happy home environment. There is no point in not being happy when you can, simply by taking care of yourself:)

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

Before we started TTC, I was on Celexa, Abilify, and Atarax. [I am Bipolar type 2.] We chose to ween off of them, as our OB said that Celexa and Abilify were some of the bigger no-no's for pregnancy. Atarax was OK so long as I took less than 60 mgs once I got into the 2nd or 3rd trimester. Everything was manageable until about 27 weeks. From there, I started Atarax again on week 28, and my OB has suggested we test it out alone for 2 weeks. If things don't improve he will switch me to Welbutrin for the remainder of my pregnancy.

I'm so glad people are talking about this. I am six weeks and decided(with the doc) to come off Lexapro for the first trimester and see how it goes. I'm afraid of the anxiety and depression coming back so I'm having husband keep an eye out for symptoms or changes in behavior (as I don't always realize them til it's really bad). Hopefully I can get back on them in the second trimester, please God. I don't want to be a mess when trying to plan for such a happy moment in our lives but I also want to minimize risk to baby.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I was diagnosed with severe clinical unipolar depression and panic disorder and have been on 40 mg Celexa for 7 years. This med has been a life saver for me but it has not been shown as safe for pregnancy according to 3 doctors I have consulted with, so I have been stepping down off of it. I am now on 10 mg and planning to be completely off in a couple of weeks. My PCP and psychologist both told me that Prozac, having been around the longest (SSRI), has been studied the most and has not been linked to any birth defects, so I will go on Prozac if I can't function without anything, but I am seeing a cognitive therapist and hoping for the best right now. As soon as I have a baby, however, I will probably ask my husband to bring me 40 mg of Celexa and a martini while the doctors are wiping the amniotic fluid off the kid!

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

This discussion is a relief for me to read. I have suffered from panic attacks from the age of 13 and they have just gotten worse as I have gotten older now. I was on Paxil for about 6 years and it was working great. I surprisingly became pregnant in April and am 18 weeks now. Right away I went to the dr because I had hear about Paxil not being good during pregnancy. My OB was awesome and gradually took me down from the Paxil and on to Zoloft, which she said was safe throughout pregnancy and while nursing. I did not have experience any of the withdrawal symptoms I expected and was warned about. Last night I had my first panic attack in a long time which had me freaking out like a normal panic attack and then also worrying about what it could be doing to the baby. The dr. told me to take another med they had prescribed pre-pregnancy for the panic attack and it worked like a charm. I was able to go to sleep and now trying to get myself back into the normal swing of things. Now, I just am worrying in the back of my head if the baby is going to be ok with these meds but I'm trying to just relax and put my faith in my OB who has the knowledge and experience. For anyone who is suffering from a panic disorder, I think the most important thing is to know you're not alone and to remember to trust your doctor about what is best for you and the baby. Many women continue their medication through pregnancy and if the one you're on isn't ok, you can switch to one that is acceptable. Don't drive yourself (or your husband) crazy by trying to endure your symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. You are not a bad mom for trying to keep yourself sane and normal! :)

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

ive been on effexor for year and my psychiatrist suggested its better for me to remain on the meds than to come off of them because of how bad i was. its healthier for me to be sane and stable then go back to being depressed and angry like i was. the stress of depression is harmful to the baby im 20 weeks now and my baby is a-ok so far. my psych said he has seen many babies born from mothers on this medicine in over 20 years and only once was a mild side effect when the baby was possibly experiencing a withdrawl symptom but was fine a few days after birth.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I was going through the same dilemma... do I stay on my meds or get off?? I just found out that I'm about 5 weeks pregnant with my first (age 32). I've been on Lexapro 10mg for 3 months and Lorazapam .05mg as needed since January. I've read that Lexapro is not the safest anti-depressant to be on while pregnant, as it hasn't been studied enough. However, I have read that women have taken Lexapro all through their pregnancy and had healthy babies. So it's up to the woman, her doctor and your condition. I stopped Lexapro cold turkey this past Monday and have had no real side effects (maybe due to the low dose and the fact that I've been on it for only 3 months). The thing I do miss is the Lorazapam, to get me through a very stressful day in the office. I've been able to control my anxiety with deep breathing and knowing that I have this precious baby growing in me. I'm hoping I can get through the 9 months. It seems like an eternity...

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I talked to my psychiatrist about this, as I was taking about 4 meds before we had the talk about me TTC and I was concerned that it was much too much to be on if I got pregnant. We carefully went through each of the meds I am on and figured out which one 'helps the most' (which for me is my Wellbutrin) and cut out my others (with a taper-off of Celexa and no more Valium or Klonopin, which I only took as needed anyway). She said that many anti-depressants are found to have minimal side-effects on the baby, though the Valium and Klonopin were more likely to cause physical birth defects so she strongly advised me against those. However, I only take those two meds for panic attacks and not seizures, which is a whole different ball of wax. What my OB has said is it's all about carefully weighing the risks - to the women who said they're much healthier (emotionally/socially) and take better care of themselves when not depressed, I couldn't agree with you more!! If you're not eating, staying in bed all day, etc because you are depressed that's not good for baby either. And once s/he's here he needs a mom that is emotionally available to the best of her ability. I personally did taper off of one of mine, but that was a choice made with a doctor.

A good friend of mine was on Lexapro for years and when she got pregnant her Dr switched her to Zoloft and said they have very good research on it. She gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl in June and even has been able to breastfeed!!! Both mother and baby are terrific and she has no regrets.. I believe every woman must speak with their doctor and do what is best in her situation. I hope sharing apostitive outcome helps some of you to feel good about taking care of you and the baby!!

I would honestly double check again if taking Lexapro is safe....Before I got pregnant I talked to my Dr about whether it was safe to stay on Lexapro if I were to get pregnant & she told me that No tests have been done on Lexapro to say it's safe to take while Pregnant. I am 4 weeks along & the day I found out I was pregnant, I took myself of it immediatly & called the Nurse. There are two diff kinds of Anti-Depressant Med's you can take while Pregnant that ARE safe, one being Prozac.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

depression runs in my family and i was diagnosed when i was in elementary school. i have been on and off meds since then. i quit taking my cymbalta and abilify when i found out i was pregnant. you never know what could happen. they can only list something as a side effect or recall a medicine after it has negatively affected x amount of people. they told women that paxil was safe during pregnancy, and it turns out it isnt. my mom took paxil when she was pregnant with my brother 5 years ago. he was born with a cranial defect and required brain surgery before his first birthday. they had to cut him from ear to ear, peel his face down and break his skull. it was horrible and he still suffers from developmental delays. my baby's health is too important to me to take any type of risk like that. hoping to return to meds shortly after birth.

LINDSEY HEGG: I can totally relate and understand your concerns about a past with an eating disorder and becoming pregnant. I dealt with both anorexia and bulimia from when I was 14 until about 23/24.....I am now 25 and a healthy weight. I deal with negative body image on a daily basis....I am six weeks pregnant with my first child and I am not showing as of right now. I'm very scared of how I will react to the weight gain. I have been on Citalopram (Celexa) and Lamitial for years and have been told by MANY different doctors to come off all my medicines. I slowly took myself off of them and I'm doing okay so far. I am trying to keep focused on the fact that my body is healthy enough to have a child instead of how much weight I'm going to gain. I have to stay strong for my baby and would not take even a SMALL risk of harming the baby by taking medicines.

I am having a terrible time with this. I have always had anxiety and depression. With the anxiety being the worst. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I got off my xanex and cymbalta. The problem is when I tried zoloft and prozac I had severe adverse reactions. I have had terrible withdrawl but the anxiety is actually worse. I have not been myself. I have an awful time eating, sleeping, staying calm. My primary is very worried but the last time I seen my OBGYN he wanted me to stay off them. I don't know what to do. Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I am currently taking Prestiq and Lamictal and I am 10 weeks pregnant. I spoke to my psychiatrist and he told me that if I am not on it I have the chance of harming my baby. A person who doesn't suffer from depression and bipolar can still suffer from depression and postpartum depression. That means I have a greater chance of me getting way worse during my pregnancy and after the baby is born when I am breastfeeding. I made the choice to stay on my medication because I don't know how bad my mental state could be right now. My doctor says that the are a category C medication which is known to be safe. With all medications there is a risk during pregnancy...but with this I think it's a bigger risk to go off of it.

I am taking 50mg of Zoloft. I was on a high dose for OCD..which I've had since I was in pre-school....25 years. My doctor weaned me down to the lowest dose I can tolerate. I see a perinatologist as I also have other high risk factors. He says it is safe and the benefits outweigh the risks. I tried my hardest for 3 weeks not to take it and I was stressing my body horribly. If you're not ok, your baby/babies are not ok. If you have diabetes, you're going to take meds so don't beat yourself up for mental health reasons.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I have atypical major depressive disorder. I've always been depressed for as long as I can remember. When not pregnant, I take venlafaxine SR (Effexor) AND bupropion SR (Wellbutrin). I cannot take hormonal birth control and any IUD causes me pain around my tailbone. So, I am very cautious about my mentrual cycle. I have a son who is 7mo. Recently I discovered I'm pregnant again. I was late with my period by one day and knew. Just like when I found out I was pregnant with my son, I stopped both meds immediately. I seen my family doctor ASAP for a pregnancy test. Right now, I am almost 6wks. For me, I always have withdrawals from venlafaxine. They lasted up to 3wks last time I went off venlafaxine. I had to be put in the hospital so I had very little external stimulation (i.e. lights, sounds, situations). Then and now, I was told I could be on Wellbutrin only. Its class C. As with all meds, there can be a small risk. My doc left me on Wellbutrin this time, but I have been weening myself off of it. I hope to be off it completely in two weeks. I know they say if the benefit outweighs the risk, do it. I however, do not like taking chances with someone else's life. It may be in my body, but I still respect that it is its own being. I do my best to take care of it. Better than my own life I suppose.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I am 10 weeks pregnant and I take Cipralex. I did alot of research about taking antidepressants while pregnant when we were trying. I spoke with my doctor about it and we actually switched the one I was taking at the time to Cipralex as there had been more studies done on Cipralex that showed it was a "safer" one to take while pregnant. The main side effect is restlessness in the baby after it is born and they may have to stay in the hospital for a few days after birth.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I feel like i have been researching this for years before I got pregnant ( I'm 8wks) and I too was worried about the effects of being on an SSRI ( currently on Zoloft). I also tried to ween myself off of it years ago and had a horrible panic disorder relapse. I spoke to my Dr. about a year ago, and truthfully, most Dr's have no problems with Zoloft or Prozac, as the benefits if you really do have panic attacks or depression GREATLY outweigh the small percentage of chance that anything abnormal will happen. For real substantial information go here: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/DrugSafetyInformationforHeathcareProfessionals/PublicHealthAdvisories/ucm124348.htm and here as well, http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/antidepressants/DN00007 However, and I am no expert, I have read that drugs like Paxil are far riskier than Prozac or Zoloft to take while pregnant. Be smart, do what is best for you and your baby, and talk to your doctor. To cletusshirley - Unless she was on some sort of Lorzepam or Diazepam (which are xanax and ativan, both are not anti depressants, but are used for anxiety and depression once in a while) I can't imagine being "addicted" to or taking more than prescribed as there are no real noticeable narcotic effects of most SSRI's. I would find out what she was on as xanax and ativan DEFINITELY should not be taken during pregnancy without talking to your doctor as they are a narcotic.

My wife was also taking Zoloft before she became pregnant. The problem with this medication is that relapses are very severe. My wife wanted to go off them, we even looked for rehab programs for people in her situation, but nothing worked, so after we got pregnant she stayed on it until the 3rd semester. She felt very sick and she couldn't do anything but sit in bed all day, and eventually went back on it. We're hoping that no severe damaged was caused to our baby.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I have asked a friend of mine who's a medic at the dual diagnosis treatment center about the antidepressants my wife is taking and weather or not they will affect the our baby. Because all the substances in the mother's blood end up in the baby's blood stream, most medications are not recommended during pregnancy. It's best to talk to you medic about lowering the dosage or even interrupting your treatment.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I had twins 11 years ago and had severe postpartum depression. I have been struggling with depression and anxiety since then, and am currently on 60mg cymbalta. this drug has been a miracle for me because I can function again! I've been on it for about a year. But the problem is that we are wanting to start trying for another baby. I don't know if I can be off the cymbalta! I'm scared because I can't handle how I feel, can't function or anything becasue the depression and anziety consume every aspect of my life. What can I do? I've tried all the other meds, and nothing has helped like Cymbalta. But I also don't feel it's right for me to be taking meds while pregnant. I'm in a dilema! Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm also terrified that I will have ppd like I had with the twins, and I don't want that either! I want to be able to enjoy the time when the are little. I hardly can remember when the twins were little because I was so drugged up! Help!

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I have been taking Celexa for 10 years now and all the doctors at my ob/gyn office agree that it is better to stay on the medication so that I am mentally healthy during my pregnancy than to go off of it. I am reading all these posts about taking antidepressants and i want to point out that some of these are from 2009!! Be careful what you read, information changes all the time!!

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been taking Wellbutrin xl for nearly 10 years now. Upon finding out that I was pregnant, both my internist and my CNMW told me they wanted me weaned off before the end of the first trimester. They had similar concerns about the dopaminergic properties of the medication affecting the baby's cardiovascular system despite the lack of evidence beyond category C. My psychiatric nurse practitioner did not veto the decision, but is on high alert for signs of worsening depression. She also wants me to go back on it at the first sign of postpartum issues at the risk of forgoing breastfeeding. So far I'm and down to half dose after one week, but I am EXHAUSTED and a little worried. Even my coworkers have been commenting on how tired I am. Wish me luck!

I went to my first obgyn appt today and my doctor told us that xoloft is fine to take during pregnancy. She said that Zoloft has been tested to be ok during pregnancy, and that it is the go to medicine if a patient needs it.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

I did not take antidepressants during pregnancy because I heard that it can cause me serious problems. I asked the advice of the guys from www.lafayettepaincare.net and we managed to get over the problems.

Q&A: Can I take antidepressants while pregnant?

My husband and I are one step prior to TTC and I am trying to find some answers in preparation... I am currently taking Cymbalta for chronic migraines and I was wondering if anyone had any luck with that one while pregnant. Obviously I will do whatever is best for the baby, I just need to find a safe substitute beforehand if the meds I'm currently on won't be safe. Thank you!
