The Bump Expert

If you’re using an acne medication and trying to conceive or found out you’re pregnant, talk to your dermatologist or OB right away -- the product you’re using might not be safe to use during pregnancy.

It figures, right? Just when your hormones are going berserk (and your skin is out of control), you’re told you shouldn’t be using your old-standby pimple zappers and preventers. But hear this scary stuff: The oral acne medication Accutane is proven to cause birth defects. And salicylic acid, one of the most common over-the-counter topical acne ingredients, has been linked to birth defects too. Benzoyl peroxide is considered safe by some doctors, but we recommend against using it because research suggests it could affect baby’s birth weight. So check your bottles for those ingredients and toss anything you have that contains them.

To play it super-safe, there are some all-natural ingredients you can use to tame your acne, such as lactic acid, tea tree oil or sulfur. All of those ingredients have passed teratology screening, meaning they’re proven to be safe.

I was told topicals with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are safe (especially if they are 2% or lower - which most are), but retinoids should not be taken at all.

This is false information. There have been no cases of birth defects caused by using salicylic acid topically. Check out otispregnancy.com for the correct information and clinical studies. Only about 10% of topical meds enter the blood stream and is virtually gone once it reaches baby. The main concern is for meds taking orally.

Cathiepf - Topamax is a Category C, meaning it's been linked to birth defects in animal studies. Talk to your doctor about costs/benefits...this may be a medicine you need to stay on during pregnancy for YOUR health, if you're taking it for seizures or severe migraines. I'm not personally familiar with Altruline, but it appears to be Category C as well. Again, talk with your physician...mine wants me to stay on some form of anxiety medication during pregnancy, and she actually told me she took Prozac herself during pregnancy (also Category C). So, it's definitely worth a trip to the doctor to have the "what about my meds?" discussion.
