Q&A: When's my due date?

I'm very confused about my due date. I found out I was pregnant a week ago. I saw a nurse practitioner and she told me that I would have an ultrasound in two weeks to see how far along I am. My husband came home from deployment on July 1st. [Today's date: July 25.]

The Bump Expert

I know it can be very confusing, but there is a simple explanation for the difference between your calculated weeks of pregnancy and how far along you are in your pregnancy according to conception date. The best way to explain this is with some basic info about the menstrual cycle.

Pregnancy is calculated based on the average menstrual cycle, which lasts 28 days. The first day of menstrual bleeding marks the first day of the menstrual cycle. This is called your LMP, or last menstrual period.During the first few days of the cycle, menstrual bleeding (your period) occurs as the uterus sloughs the lining that developed in the previous cycle. Afterwards, uterine lining (endometrium) grows again in preparation for possible conception.

Approximately two weeks into this cycle, ovulation occurs. The few days before and after this event is when you are most fertile. If during this time you have intercourse and sperm is released, fertilization(and thus, pregnancy) can occur. After fertilization and throughout pregnancy, the endometrium does not slough (meaning no menstrual bleeding) because it is now supporting the developing baby. If fertilization does not occur, the endometrium disintegrates and menstrual bleeding follows, signaling the beginning of a new cycle.

When calculating the weeks of pregnancy, we include those two weeks from the first day of the LMP to the approximate date of ovulation and conception. Because the first day of your LMP is the easiest part of the cycle to notice and record, that is where the beginning of the menstrual cycle and your pregnancy is measured from. It is about halfway through the average woman’s menstrual cycle that she ovulates and therefore conceives. So, just as your ovulation calculator indicates, your date of conception should coincide with right about the time your husband came home from deployment.

Whew…no need to worry there! So your little embryo may be only four weeks old, but you are six weeks pregnant. It sounds a little silly, but you aren’t really pregnant for about the first two weeks of your pregnancy. Finally, your estimated due date (EDC or EDD) is then calculated as 40 weeks from your LMP... And yes, this does mean that baby is actually only 38 weeks old when born.

Q: When's my due date?

Please help me understand...I conceived on 10/9/08 but my last cycle started on 9/10/08. So, my next one was supposed to start around 10/10/08 and I did not have one. I took 2 tests and I am pregnant and very excited. But, very confused about how far along I am. Can you clarify for me? Thank you!!

re: Q: When's my due date?

Ok, so I still don't fully understand why two weeks are added on. I mean, obstetricians can tell the exact day of conception.... Well, anyway, when I go to see my obstetrician, do I tell them how far along I am with or without the extra two weeks added on??

re: Q: When's my due date?

I understand now! the extra 2 weeks come from the normal 14 days inbetween your "period starting" and your ovul. if your like me I conceived on 4/23/2009 but my "first day of my last period" was 4/9/2009 or 14 days so I'm 7 1/2 weeks preg. but the baby is only 5 1/2 weeks old. I got a home journal and made the book read to the age of the baby (in my case 5 1/2 weeks) that way I can realy track the growth of the baby true to day. I guess this only works if you know your conception date, but lets home I'm doing this right!

Q&A: When's my due date?

I know exactly what you mean. I am so confused by the due date. Since I know exactly when I ovulate I know how far along I really am. My dr. did schedule my 9 wk appt at 9 weeks based on my ovulation date rather than my lmp. I'm hoping they make my due date based on my ovulation date too. It's frustrating when you want to read up on where your baby is based on weeks and you know you're not really that far. I'm right there with ya!

Q&A: When's my due date?

According to my LMP I'm due 10/20/2010; however, the U/S last week says 10/31/2010. Which one is correct? I read on another site that it's from the LMP and that the baby will catch up to that date. My other thought is that at 6w1d, when I had the U/S, it's so small that even the slightest click in the wrong spot by the technician could make a HUGE difference. Any thoughts?

Q&A: When's my due date?

It is hard to say. I was nervious and I ended up late and it turned out, it was nerves that changed my schedule. I would go to the doctor and have them take the test. They have the best tests and can give you the exact reason.

Q&A: When's my due date?

re: Q: When's my due date? Re:I understand now! the extra 2 weeks come from the normal 14 days inbetween your "period starting" and your ovul. if your like me I conceived on 4/23/2009 but my "first day of my last period" was 4/9/2009 or 14 days so I'm 7 1/2 weeks preg. but the baby is only 5 1/2 weeks old. I guess this only works if you know your conception date, but lets home I'm doing this right! The problem you'll have with doing it that way is that all of the literature you read and all pictures that you look at regarding each stage of development of the fetus adds that 2 weeks in. So, if you're 8 weeks along, according to date from last period, but you're thinking of yourself as 6 weeks along, according to conception.....everything you read about the 6 week gestation will be something that has come and gone for you. If you want to read about or look at your baby as it is in any given moment.......you have to look at it based on your LMP, not conception. I realize it's confusing with the 2 weeks added in.....kind of look it's confusing when you talk about how many months you are vs how many weeks you are. Most people think.....20 weeks = 5 months. Not true. 23 weeks = 5 months. Trust me on that. So the best thing to do is to forget about months and only talk about your pregnancy in terms of weeks of gestation. Also, forget about the conception date. Just understand that everything you're reading out there has the 2 weeks built in........so calculate from the first day of your last period. This way.....you have only ONE due date, ONE number of weeks that you and NO months to talk about. Much less confusing that way.

...glad I'm not the only one confused. Haha :)

Q&A: When's my due date?

Okay, but I'm still confused. Because if pregnancy is calculated from the first day of my last period, then I would skip my period when I was 4 weeks pregnant, right? Assuming most cycles are 28 days long. However, everywhere I read says you won't notice your first skipped period until 5 weeks pregnant, even the info on here says Week 5: By now you'll be noticing your first missed period...But I noticed mine last week. So does that make me 5 weeks pregnant based on my last period being 5 weeks ago, or 6 weeks based on the fact that my skipped period was last week? Not that that one week matters, but it would be nice to know until my u/s on the 21st :)

Q&A: When's my due date?

the pregnancy period is of 38 to 40 weeks. from date you had last menstrual cycle the date is calculate. http://www.biblehealth.com/calculators/pregnancy-due-date-calculator.html

Jehnavi |

Q&A: When's my due date?

I think they say 5 weeks pregnant because the assumption is that you would wait a week before testing, so that you had ACTUALLY MISSED a period. Not to mention a due date is really only an estimate, this is a baby, not a science project. The assumption is also that you conceived directly mid-cycle, although you can never be certain exactly when it happened unless you had an internal camera like the one is that horrible "miracle of life" video they make you watch in 7th grade. They'll use ultrasounds and hormone levels to try to give a good estimate of where you are, but it may change several times during your pregnancy.

Q&A: When's my due date?

Oh wow. That makes soooo much more sense to me now! We were thinking our OBGYN was a retard. Ha Ha Ha. He gave us a due date of Nov 14, but said the fetus was 6 weeks along... so really the baby is 6 weeks, but I am 8weeks pregnant. Light bulb.

Q&A: When's my due date?

im still alil confused because my periods have always been irregular it can be anywhere from 1-5days nd when i went to the dr after taking a home pregnancy test they said i was 6wks with a edd of 9-25 then the nxt apt i went to about 4-5wks later said my edd is 9-16 according to size nd developement of the baby nd said i conceived the week of 12/17-12/24 but i bled very light for a day or 2 that week (which is how my pds normally are)..so is my edd wrong?? did i really conceive that wk?? im soo confused

unique916 |

Q&A: When's my due date?

Also for those of you wanting to follow your baby's actual week age so you can find out what is going on, all the books and websites go with your gestational age. meaning that if they say in week 7 the baby is growing like this then that means the baby is 5 weeks and you are 7 weeks along. Your best bet is to just go with how your Dr measures you and if needed he or she will update that. Stop worrying about when you conceived and just enjoy the fact that you did :)

Q&A: When's my due date?

It makes no sense to have to look at it by your Lmp when your truly not pregnant in those first 2 weeks...im really confused!

Q&A: When's my due date?

Took a hpt yesterday at Lmp 6wks it was negative so do i wait for another wk or 2 being truly at 5 or 6 wks

lsmcafee |

Q&A: When's my due date?

What if you ovulated less than two weeks after lmp? I was on injectibles and 9 days after CD1 I had my IUI. And then it was only 13 days after that I got a BFP. I know I conceived on or about CD10. I typically have very long cycles (34-36 days). My first US is in a week but on the phone the nurse calculated my EDD at a week later than I thought. So I conceived 24 days ago...if I add two weeks to that then I would be in my 6th week...but according to the nurse I just started my 5th week. Also, when you say "I'm 5 weeks" does that mean you're in your 5th week or you've completed 5 weeks? Maybe that is part of my confusion.

Q&A: When's my due date?

I'm completely confused! I'm exactly 7 weeks 1 days pregnant today (10/04/2011), but im completely lost as to when my due date is. I was on the contraceptive pill when i became pregnant, and due to this, and not having a period for 6 months, i'm unable to state when the first day of my last menstral cycle was. Can anyone help me or tell me when my baby is due?

yummymummy89 |

Q&A: When's my due date?

I got pregnant in 2009. The first day of my last period was October 24th, I gave birth to my daughter on August 13th. If I calculated my pregnancy by the first day of my last period the due date was July 31st (which is 41 weeks & 6 days), but if I calculated my pregnancy adding in the 2 weeks (contraception time) then my due date would be August 14th (which is 42 weeks, but if you're not really pregnant for the first 2 weeks of your pregnancy then it would be 40 weeks even). So since my daughter was born on August 13th, I suggest when you calculate your pregnancy, do it with adding in the 2 weeks (14 days). Seems to me that's a better fit. Hope this helps =].

Q&A: When's my due date?

Well, they predict due dates based on the AVERAGE cycle. My body is anything but average. A lot of women are off a little bit, this is the reason they are "overdue". For example: My cycles are not 28 days, they are 45. I ovulate on days 23-25 (I know because when we were TTC I took daily ovulation tests). Therefore, when most doctors claculate my due date, I deliver 2 weeks after that because I in fact got pregnant 2 weeks later in my cycle than the average that they predict.

cuteness_129 |

Q&A: When's my due date?

My question is a little bit in reverse. When I found out I was pregnant, I used to formula to calculate my due date to be Oct. 2nd. When I had my first ultrasound and OB appointment, they moved by due date back to Oct. 6th. With my own calculations, I knew exactly how many weeks and how many days I was because I was going off of my LMP. Now that they moved my due date, I don't know how to figure out exactly how far along I am! I know generally what week I am, but how do I figure out what day I go from 8 weeks to 9 weeks, etc.?

ittybitty8809 |

Q&A: When's my due date?

Naegele's Rule is 280 days from the last missed period, so maybe the doctor recalibrated for you if you counted wrong. If you know the approximate date of conception, you can keep your own count if you think the doctor is wrong. Generally speaking, hardly anyone is born on their predicted due date, and according to the World Health Organization, the normal range of gestation periods has a two week margin of error.

Q&A: When's my due date?

Being a mother I know how important it is for an expected mother to get an early diagnosis of pregnancy for medial or social reasons. If you are supposed to have a baby, a pregnancy due date calculator is quite important to check the due period. However, it doesn’t tell the exact date of delivery, but most of the deliveries take place either earlier or later than the due date provided by the pregnancy calculator. It is important to consult your doctor, if you do not experience any labor signs after the 40th week. When I was expected to have a baby, I was also very confused about my due date so I used Due Date Aptaclub pregnancy calculator to take a fair idea of my big day so that I could prepare well in advance. If you are not sure about your due date, then there are several websites available on the internet that calculates the due date for an expectant mother. Pregnancy calculator is an efficient way to calculate result about your due dates.

Q&A: When's my due date?

Okay, so my first day of my LMP was January 16, 2014. When I put that in The Bump Due Date Calculator, I get the due date of October 23, 2014 and it says that I am currently in my sixth week. However, when I go to my own calendar and count to the due date given by The Bump I get 41 weeks (not 40) and the week I calculate that I am currently in is week 7. I am so confused. Help?!
