Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

What over-the-counter medications can I take safely in pregnancy?

Re: What over-the-counter medications can I take safely in pregnancy?

The Bump Expert

Many over-the-counter medications are safe during pregnancy, but there are a few surprising drugs that can lead to problems for your fetus. In general, always speak with your doctor prior to taking any medication(prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal). Also, keep in mind that certain vague symptoms you wouldn’t think twice about in normal times (a headache, for example) can actually indicate serious pregnancy-related complications. And, before taking any over-the-counter medication, think about what other medications you are taking. Even medications that are considered safe in pregnancy can become dangerous when they interact with others.

Here are some common pregnancy problems, along with a quick summary of related meds that are probably safe... and ones that probably aren't.

Aches and pains: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) appears to be safe during pregnancy for treating general aches, pains and headache. Medications in the NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) class, including ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) may be associated with congenital heart defects, specifically septal defects, when taken during the first trimester. NSAIDS have also been linked to other heart abnormalities and low amniotic fluid levels when used in the third trimester.

Congestion and allergy symptoms: Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and loratidine (Claritin) appear to be safe during pregnancy. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) may be associated with birth defects involving the abdominal wall. Also, decongestants (such as phenylephrine) may affect blood flow to the placenta, and should generally be avoided throughout your pregnancy.

Cough: Two major cough medication ingredients -- dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) and guaifenesin (an expectorant, which means it loosens up thick mucus) -- both appear to be safe during pregnancy, although both have been tested in relatively few studies.

Constipation: Both Metamucil and stool softeners like Colaceappear to be safe in pregnancy.Laxatives, mineral oils and rectal suppositories may stimulate labor, so should only be used after speaking with your doctor.

Heartburn: Antacids such as Tums and Mylanta appear to be safe in pregnancy, and for most women, they significantly improve heartburn symptoms. If antacids aren't enough, famotidine (Pepcid) andranitidine (Zantac) do not appear to be associated with any pregnancy complications.

All this said, there are situations where the potential benefit of taking a medication outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. The most important piece of advice regarding medication -- talk with your doctor! Be honest about your questions, concerns and medical history, and you should be just fine.

My dr told me not to take aspirin while TTC. Is that the same as tylenol???

Nikosmom |

re: Q: What medications are safe?

My dr said that tylenol and tylenol PM are fine. Unforunately, the PM and Benedaryl do nothing for my insomnia, and there are days that I am barely functioning. My dr said Ambien was ok if really needed but to try to limit my intake - my question really is, what's worse for the baby? Me barely sleeping or taking the Ambien?

I have Lupus and both my rheumatologist and my obgyn told me I have to take a low dose (81mg) asprin daily to help prevent blood clots in the placenta. Basically it's one of those situations where the benefits outweigh the risks.

I know your not supposed to take Tylenol Pm, or at least that is what my dr said and as for lactose intolerance make sure you get enough calcium. And allergy medications i would check with your dr. As for Aspin I was told it increases your chance for unnecessary bleeding

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Sleepless nights and lactose intolerance answers.... I found that phenergan helps my nausea and helps me sleep at night. Dr said it was just fine to take at night and I had a friend that took it throughout her entire pregnancy because she was sick throughout the whole thing and everything was fine with her pregnancy and newborn. My lactose intolerance appeared last year about this time when I came down with the stomach bug. Once I got pregnant, it went away. Before I found out I was pregnant I was taking this medicine called digestive advantage: lactose intolerance therapy. I stopped taking it once I found out I was pregnant and then the lactose intolerance stopped bothering me after the first 2 or so months - now I have no problems with it. But it might be worth checking with your Dr to see if the Digestive Advantage is safe.

My Dr said only use the albuterol if really necessary. I did some research and it looks like some of the studies in rodents have lead to cleft pallet and/or limb defects. However it appears that those occur with heavy use of albuterol. I have only been using it if I absolutely have to.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

OMG. I have had a cold for over a month and my doctor gave me a list of the things I could take. Sudafed was on that list and I have taken it twice in the first trimester. I'm freaking out right now. Also I get really bad migrains and my doctor said I could take motrin. I have not taken that because I remember with my first child all I was able to take was tylenol. I hope I have not done serious damage to my child. I will freak.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I saw my Dr. today. She specifically said that Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) is generally considered safe duing pregnancy; I've read this in a number of places as well, including elsewhere on thebump.com. All of this conflicting information is confusing for us first-timers. I think I'll just stick with what my Dr. recommends...

rebeccahile |

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I take 20 mg prozac daily, which is fine. I've also taken Tylenol, Tylenol PM, Dramamine, Gas-X, Amoxicillan...I think everyone goes a little overboard with what not to take. You have to treat your symptoms! The baby won't do well if you're sick. Obviously, you don't want to overdo any of them, but believe me...if I can't sleep or if I have severe nausea, or an infection requiring antibiotics, I'm taking something! Just use your common sense and you'll be fine! (This is my second pregnancy, and I took all but the prozac for my first one, too. I should have been on it though! Ha ha!)

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I've read that benadryl can interfere with placenta/uterine stuff and in rare cases cause abnormalities.... I'm surprised they say it's okay. I agree that checking with doctor is best. But it seems to me that as soon as one pregnancy ailment recedes, a new one comes in its place... my nausea was replaced by headaches, which was replaced by runny/stuffy nose. Yuck! Not to mention I feel like every pore on my chest and back is becoming a blackhead. I know a lot of anti-acne medications can cause major birth defects though, so I guess I just put up with being zitty. Hope it clears up before people will be taking pictures of me & the new baby come delivery day... :-/

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I have severe signs of the flu and all I am able to take is tylenol and mucinex. It's not doing jack. Is there anything else that any of you have heard that works or what should I do? Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I wish doctors would agree on something. My doc says no to tylenol pm, even though its tylenol (though a bigger dose then the regular strength)and benadryl, both of which are ok by her. I have very bad insomnia and my husband snores loud enough to be heard clear cross the apartment. She okayed me taking benadryl every night if needed...that with hubby sleeping in another room let's me get some sleep at night. She also won't let me use any sort of zit cream even though I'm breaking out worse than a 14 yr old. 58 days and I get my body back, thank god.

I am 5 weeks pregnant now and already starting to have sleepless nights. With my 1st pregnancy my OB prescribed the lowest dosage of Ambien for me to take and trust me when you get into your last trimester you'll do anything to get comfortable enough for sleep! My OB said that Ambien was totally safe to take and they actually gave it to me at the hospital when I was sent home for false labor! I'm hoping my OB will prescribe it to me again this time!

Well actually its a question I have severe anxiety and I am prescribed xanax. I was wondering if that's OK to take while pregnant or if there is something I can take that won't harm my baby?

TME86 |

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

If your doctor knows that your pregnant and they continue to prescribe it,then they have already decided one of two options 1) it's safe 2) the benefits outweigh the risks. Keep in mind not all medication reaches baby. Also when it comes to depression/anxiety/mental health issues often doctors feel it may be more harmful to take you off of them to both baby and you.sometimes the best thing for baby is to ensure you are giving it a stress free development. If the doctor feels you need to be on a medication to treat an illness but what you were taking pre-pregnancy is harmful, then they will switch you to something less risky

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

The following was provided to me by the practice of OB/GYNs. These medications are okay to take without talking to them first. Anything beyond this list needed to be run past them or the nurse practitioner available. I would suggest to anyone that if they have concerns to call their doctor. Nasal Congestion or Cold - Dimetapp, Sudafed (60mg - 1 4x daily), Tylenol Cold & Sinus, Actifed, Robitussin (1-2 tsp every 4 hrs), Chlorseptic, Water/Salt gargles Headache - Tylenol or Tylenol Extra Strength (1-2 tablets every 4 hrs - DO NOT exceed dosage) Constipation - Colace/Pericolace, Milk of Magnesium, Senakot (natural laxative), Metamucil, Fibercon, Stool softeners are okay - use sparingly Diarrhea - Kaopectate, Imodium AD, Balneol Heartburn - Tums/Rolaids, Mylanta, Gaviscon, Pepcid, Zantac Sleep/Insomnia - Benadryl (25-50mg at bedtime - only during the 2nd and 3rd trimester), Tylenol PM Hemorrhoids - Preparation H, Anusol, Tucks Pads Yeast Infection - Monistat 3 (DO NOT use Monistat 1 as it is too concentrated), Gyne-Lotrimin Nausea and Vomiting - Emetrol, Dramamine (non-drowsy), Vitamin B6 (25 mg 3-4 x daily)

For you other lactose intolerant mamma's, you can take Lactaid its a pill that helps digest the lactase enzyme that your body can't do on it's own, soy milk is a great alternative if you're interested. And as for greek yogurt, totally not the same as milk dairy, it's processed differently, and yes, it's great for you! Keep healthy everyone!

For those who r lactose intolerant try hormone free organic milk. I was told from the time I was 5 that I was lactose intolerant. Turns out I'm allergic to the hormones they give the cows (rbgh). I can drink milk as much as I want now. My baby can't get enough and the organic has a better taste.

There are a lot of over-the-counter medications that you are recommended to use while pregnant but you should always ask your doctor about them. I have a friend that works at an alcohol rehab New Jersey institute and on the side they have tested a lot of medications and the results were pretty good. They even found a way to cure alcohol syndrome in an unborn baby.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I'm glad I found an article about medication during pregnancy. When I was pregnant I had to ask for my doctor’s advice. I'm amazed that some mothers would do everything it takes to keep their babies safe while others don't even care. I know a person who used to take drugs when she was pregnant. That's dreadful. I understand that once you've started it's difficult to quit but why not trying one of the addiction treatments available in rehab centers?

I'm a very paranoid person when it comes to medication, so of course I didn't take any during pregnancy. I fought off the colds with hot tea and lemon. It's ironic that I'm looking for a Beverly Hills breast augmentation center, giving the fact that I'm against esthetic surgeries, meds, and things like that. Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to do it but I’ll definitely think about it.

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

In regards to lactose intolerance comments above: 1. The best way to eat dairy while lactose intolerant is also ingesting the lactase enzyme which will digest the lactose in the milk. The best brand that I have found is called Lacteeze (liquid formula), and is a preparation that you can add directly to your milk products to pre-digest the lactose, or you can take it with some water. 2. Lactaid now makes yogurt, ice cream and sour cream, as well as lactose-free milk. 3. greek style yogurt still contains lactose. 4. yogurt from goats milk might be a better alternative because the level of lactose is lower in goat's milk than in cow's milk. 5. Breyers's also makes a lactose free vanilla ice cream. 6. for cheese, in general, the longer that the cheese has been aged (such as cheddar), the less lactose it will have becuase the microorganisms that are used tend to "eat" the lactose. ie...fresh mozzarella....a lot of lactose aged cheddar.....not so much

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

I am 7 weeks pregnant! I went to the doctor because i had a rash on my hand, neck on my face and my eyes were swollen almost shut.. He said i am having allergic reaction to something, and we could not figure out what it could be. He told me to take Claritin, and it would be ok to take during pregnancy. I went to the bed that night and it was not getting better at all and then my ear started to swell up and bumps by my ear started showing.. and the bumps on my hand and neck was taking a turn for the worst, they become itchy and red.. i went to the hospital shortly after this and said it was posin ivy, and told be to take benadryl and prescribed me prednisone and checked with the obgyns befor giving it to me, the obgyns said they feel the safest if i took that instead of other steroids.. the doc did give me some at the hospital along with benadryl, but before i get started on taking it eveyday for about two weeks. i want to make sure it is somewhat safe and will not cause me to miscarriage. i have to check in with my doc in a couple days. I am nerviness about taking prednisone, i was kinda reading up on it and how it can cause some birth defects. I do not know if i should still go ahead and take this, has anyone ever had to take this during there pregnancy and was it ok..

Q&A: What medications are safe during pregnancy?

Mother Risk gave the ok for taking Pseudoephedrine in the first trimester for me. (I suffer from horrible sinus migraines sometimes) However they did caution to only take 30mg at a time and not to take it constantly. If I have a migraine one day and need one 30mg tablet in the morning and one at bedtime, that is fine, just not for multiple days. (if the migraine goes past 2 days, they told me to see my dr) Here is the write up, but I spoke to a Risk Counsellor that gave me the verbal ok. (I can also take a Tylenol for the pain) "Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are the most common oral decongestants in OTC cold medications. In some studies, decongestant use in the first trimester has been associated with a small increase of defects thought to arise, in some instances, from vascular disruption, such as gastroschisis, small intestinal atresia, and hemifacial microsomia.14 However, there are several cohort and case-control studies that failed to show any increased risk of malformations when oral decongestants were used during pregnancy.15,16 In addition, there was no increased risk for malformations in a recent Swedish population-based case-control study involving 2474 women exposed to oral decongestants during the first trimester and 1771 women exposed at the end of pregnancy.17" http://www.motherisk.org/prof/updatesDetail.jsp?content_id=881
