Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

Why am I so gassy and bloated? What can I do about it?

Re: Why am I so gassy and bloated? What can I do about it?

The Bump Expert

Progesterone (another of those pregnancy hormones) is relaxing smooth muscle tissue all over your body, including your gastrointestinal tract. This makes your gut work slower, giving your body more time to snatch up nutrients from your food and take them to baby... and translating into gas for you. Later in pregnancy, your bulging uterus starts pushing up on your stomach and down on your rectum, further increasing risk of heartburn and constipation.

Pain, belching, bloating and other nasties are no fun, but -- sorry -- they sort of come along with the job of carrying a baby. Luckily, there are ways to relieve some of the pressure. Eat small, regular meals, and stay away from foods that tend to give you gas. Fried foods, sweets, cabbage and beans are common culprits, but you might find other foods that are particularly troublesome. Eating and drinking slowly will keep you from swallowing excess air (you'll later use this technique when feeding baby!), and loose clothing will keep you comfy. Yoga classes can also help settle things down. And, ward off constipation (a big gas-inducer), with plenty of liquids and high-fiber foods.

re: Q: Gas and Bloating?

Man, you are not kidding... I'm usually not a known pooter, but lately it has been bananas. I'm afraid to come out of my cube. I had a cuz give me a massage and can I tell you the waft of embarrassment that hit me (and her). She said it was a compliment, but, Lord knows, I was not trying to be that complimentary....

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

OMG!!! The gas is one thing, but the pain that came with it was something else!!! Last week, I had a really bad craving for cereal and I think I ate like 4 bowls of different types and paid for it later that night! My Husband, poor ting had to message my tummy and work out all that gas and when it came out it was like a storm of "Burps & Farts".... I was sooo embarrassed, and sooo relieved at the same time!

taneradaye |

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

Thank goodness this is normal......i guess. The bloating kind of came instantly for me, i thought that I was eating too much (well, I probably was )! Now I can tell my hubby and maybe he'll believe me that its normal and not worry so much.

I thought I was eating too much, too. But I'm always feeling bloated and gassy.

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I thought I might be further along that I am because of the bloating. My husband told me I was probably eating too much. I know I am not because the queasiness wards off my appetite, especially in the evening.

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I am having this amongst other things. This might be gross, but what about bad diarrhea that has gone along with the gas and bloating. Is this normal?

How soon does the gas begin? Would I get gas even before I did a pregnancy test?

I am so glad that this is normal, I feel sooo bloated after every meal. My poor husband has to rub my belly just so I can feel better before bed.

One thing I have learned is to only eat half of your meal. This has helped me tremendously.

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I would agree with eating only half your meal and small meals throughout the day. Eat fruit, but not banannas or apples! According to my doctor's office they constipate more! (NO THANKS!) and Water Water WATER!It's working for me...I just have to stick to it more....when you slack off it just comes right back!

So its common to be gassy? Even this early in pregnancy? This has been happening a lot the past 2 days! Lol!

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I felt so bad for my hubby last night... My stomach was hurting so bad from all the gas and it needs to come out somehow. Oh well, usually it's me yelling dealing with his "issues" now the tables are turned. I just remind him that it's way worse for me than it is for him. :)

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I feel huge today! I am so incredibly bloated I don't even know what to do with myself. I know I'm not showing yet because I'm not even 5 weeks yet, but my stomach is so full I look like I'm 4 or 5 months pregnant! I am so uncomforable in my clothes and I my bra is not fitting right!!! Isn't it funny that i can complain like this, but still be overjoyed that I'm experiencing it! :o)

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

One thing that really helps is abdominal massage. It's a little uncomfortable to let someone make you fart, but if you're okay with it, go for it! Otherwise, there are some self-massaging techniques that do help.

buggerfly12 |

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

Its really sad when you wake up and the first thing you do on your way to pee of course is burp. Thats what happened to me this morning. And is anyone else having spontaneous hiccups throughout the day?

ilenegrace |

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

Thank goodness some men really think farts are funny because my husband said it's actually quite funny the 'concert' he's treated to every night while I sleep. The problem is I has gassy problems BEFORE getting pregnant so, now, it's ridiculous. I was so uncomfortable the other night I could barely sleep. Switching positions from your back to your side and deep breathing while on your side seems to get some of the air out. I'll have to think about massages because they seem to be helping some of you out. My hubby's volunteered but I was so embarassed. :-(

malcivar |

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

i don't know if Gas-X is approved by your doctor or not, but i've been taking it because for me it works WAY better than tums. i find that i end up burping and farting more - but i far prefer that to when you can feel it all building up without releasing!

re: Q: Gas and bloating?

I feel super bloated and gassy after eating. I am only 7 weeks and feel like I am showing already, the way my belly puffs out. Good thing hubby isn't shy about farting, he compliments me everytime one slips out. Foods I have noticed make it worse: broccoli, baked beans, carbonated drinks. (needless to say I am staying away from pop and BBQ's) ;-)

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

Wow...I am also glad to see that I am not the only one. The gas is the worst thing ever especially since I already had a problem before pregnancy...Now, at work or any other public place I could almost die of embarrassment. And since this is my 5th pregnancy (only 3rd baby for us) its worst than ever! And my poor hubby...not sure how he deals but he does, lol!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

lol! I feel SO much better knowing this is normal AND part of pregnancy. It started the day after I found out and I was kayaking and the pain was excrutiating - can i just say coffee is now my enemy. So far that day was the worst as far as pain - but every single thing I eat brings on the gas and I could swear I was 6 months for how bloated I am. ( I am 4 weeks) - cheers for more to come!

ayantub |

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

I am 5 weeks today and OMG I am so gassy it's awful. My husband teased me BEFORE about my burping and now it's worse! I stopped drinking coffee a few weeks ago and I know that helped but it seems like everything I eat gives me gas. Not fun but I know it's worth it! :-)

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

To any woman worried about diarrhea -- sometimes it is normal, for some women. Usually it turns out a certain type of food that never gave you issues before, suddenly gives you issues. First things first, you need to hydrate. Get yourself some Gatorade (not that G2 stuff) to build up your electrolytes and CALL YOUR DOCTOR-- that's what he/she is there for... Honestly, a day or so of intermittent runny stools won't hurt you (if you replace your fluids), but if this is going on constantly, you could be in for some dehydration issues, which is not good for you or baby. While you're waiting try BRAT - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. It's a bland diet, recommended to folks with GI issues. Stay away from greasy fried things. And, worrying too much can trigger diarrhea, so try to relax.

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

One evening my gas pains were so bad, I ended up begging my husband to take me to the ER! They gave me an antacid, as they said that excess acid can also lead to gas, plus an anti-flatulent. I've found that walking relieves the gas somewhat. I go for a 30 min walk while massaging my belly. Kind of helps.

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

i am just glad i can blame it on the dog lol but at work when i "let one go" or my constant man burps i just blame them on the baby. My usual response "it wasn't me, it was the baby" Even though i don't feel very lady like its better then vomiting as usual. My coworkers find a chuckle in this.

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

My biggest issue is that when I burped yesterday all I tasted was rotten eggs. Today I burp and I tast or smell bad fish....what the heck? My hubby just laughs at my farts. It sometimes becomes a contest between us. He's having more fun making sure I drink milk which I "hate" drinking unless it's chocolate. LOL I'll tolerate the burps and farts as long as I don't have morning sickness. We're just 6 weeks along.

buggin2 |

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

I hardly ever used to burp, and now it's constant!!! My husband just laughs, but it's so annoying! I'm only 6 weeks, but I'm so bloated in my belly that my jeans are tight! I feel like I need to buy maternity pants already to feel comfortable! But I feel better knowing I'm not the only one...

hilarious stories! I too had a gas problem even before pregnancy so now it's much worse. My husband came with me to my last appointment just so he could ask the Dr. himself what could be done. The gas is out of control and I agree eating a little bit less at each meal and eating more frequently helps....! If I could give one piece of advice do NOT eat "sugar free" candy. I was in absolute agony after a business meeting where they had sugar free candy on the table. Agony, don't do it!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

I've always struggled with gas pains/pressure and now being pregnant its becoming even more fun! However, I do have a few home remedies that help. A small cup of hot water with lemon, or clear black tea usually helps to calm things down. Also, MASSAGE: here's what I do - I rub my belly usually from just above the belly button to just above the groin in slow clock-wise circles. It seems to work really well at getting things moving in the intestines. My sister-in-law took a baby massage course and that's one of the things she learned for constipated gassy babies! I figured if it works for babies - why not for mommies too! Hope this helps.

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

For as painful and uncomfortable as it is my fiance and i cant help but laugh at it. We have musical interludes as we call them lol. I've even farted so bad that I've scared our cat out of the bedroom in the morning. We're just going through the motions with the gas and he understands when I just let loose. He's seen how bloated my belly gets. I can't tell if it's what I eat or not so I haven't changed my eating habits. Too many different cravings to try to eliminate foods right now lol.

RavensBelle |

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

Tiny burps, but a LOT of them, and now farting up a storm. The burping was probably the first symptom I got at about 3.5 weeks...the farting has just begun at 4 weeks, and not to be gross, but it STINKS -- and it smells completely different from my "usual" smell, which usually isn't bad at all. My diet hasn't changed a bit, so I am blaming my poppy seed for the stinkies!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

It used to be my hubby stinking everyone out of the room, now at 16 weeks, I'm clear a room faster than he ever did!!!! I usually only get it 2 days a week though. I go about a week at a time with issues of going #2 and then about 2 days before I can, I get horrible gas. I've had several weeks recently where its been agonizing, so bad where it wakes me up in the middle of the night almost in tears. The pregnancy with my daughter was nothing like this one.

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

MASSAGE TECHNIQUES: A professional massage therapist will probably avoid the abdominal area in the first trimester, but if you want to do self massage try this: Move your hand down from rib cage to pelvis on the left side twice. Then gently push from lower right to upper right, across to upper left, down to lower left. Repeat. Avoid pushing straight down from navel to pubis, because we don't want to push down over the uterus. Hope that helps.

My doctor also recommended Activia, it helps regulate everything. I just have an issue with anything that isn't saltines or toast in the morning so I try to have some Activia and granola around lunch for one of my (many) small meals!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

laugh-out-loud stories from you ladies!!! i Love this place! I make sure I eat yogurt fortified with probiotics and good fiber (for me it's soy-can't do too much dairy at all) I eat the best bread I can find when available- good fiber and wheat/whole grain I should def drink more WATER too!!! I drink fruit smoothies with soymilk and frozen fruit too. I try to go for a walk each day and it really helps everything- mental, physical, emotional (it had been so cold and rainy out on the east coast tho!) I drink apple juice diluted at lease 1/2 way with water sometimes first thing in the a.m. Or lemon juice with water first thing can help too. Lemon alkalizes the body- great way to "clean the pipes" in the morning too. At least I'm not as embarrased about my tooting caboose as I used to be. I just make sure i tuck the covers between us when the "motor" starts running unexpectedly at night! lol! i do find when i am well hydrated, well balanced in diet, and exercised then I feel better. my doc doesn't want me to take anything unless it is a real emergency. I went through one of those nights the gas was SO bad I couldn't sleep. since then it's been better. Garlic and sometimes spicy foods make more gas too. Also poor food combining gets me in the trouble zone fast too. i am 14 wks and just got some maternity pants. a little big big SO much more comfortable. i feel better about myself knowing i can still be around my size, in cute new clothes!, all with a big baby belly. the pants have really made a difference in my comfort and because i find more physical comfort- my attitude has changed!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

To those other few concerned with diarrhea, or anyone readong this who searched for it: I went from 5 months of severe constipation to loose stools overnight. I've been having them for a week - I'm not sick and i have no cramping or pain with it. My doctor isn't worried, and said it's normal with hormonol changes that occur all through pregnancy. If it keeps up, you'll need keflex or something to help it out. Although I've read a lot about diarrhea & labor, my docs said not to worry about that unless you're having contractions or bleeding with it. Hope that helps!

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

Apparently if you sit on a toilet, lean forward a little and rub your belly in a circular motion you can help relieve the gas (the massage part). And if you find a tight painful area, gently push down a bit more firmly to help release some pressure.

My husband made me laugh but it was a rather logical answer: We are essentially a little factory making a baby( in my case two), just like any factory, we end up having emissions...it is natural and normal... I can deal with the relieving of the gas...but the bloating is awful this time around...

JaysMama2007 |

Q&A: Ways to deal with gas during pregnancy?

I read on a post some where on the internet a way to help relieve the intense gas pain in your abdomen. I was in so much pain one night that I cried. What this "poster" said was to get down on your knees and put your elbows down to the floor as well (be on all fours so to speak). You then put your head down towards the floor and try and point your butt up in the air. It sounds ridiculous I know, but I was in so much agony that I had to try it. The thing is that it worked. Sometimes when I try it in just helps to give me a much needed relief from the pain. Other times it actually can help push a much needed fart out if I'm so bloated the nothings been happening on it's own. I recommend trying that position to anyone who's desperate enough like I was and needs relief. You won't be sorry.

Gas-X and Tums are both on my approved list of otc meds from my doctor. Drinking lots of water is helpful. Also walking. I try to walk everyday after dinner. Walking is good for many reasons. Exercise, helps with digestion, helps with swelling, helps prevent constipation. Water helps with digestion, swelling and digestion. I am at 6 months and haven't had tons of gas, but must admit when I do. Whew!
