Yes. Multiples conceived through IVF (ICSI and assisted hatching) are usually fraternal and may not share the same placenta or amniotic sac like identical twins do. Babies that share the same placenta (monochorionic babies) have the highest risk of complications. Monochorionic gestations occur in two-thirds of identical twins, and are at a higher risk for a rare but serious condition called twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), which happens when one of the babies is unable to get enough blood, while the other has too much. If your babies are monochorionic, you’ll want to ask your doctor to monitor your pregnancy extra-closely, since TTTS is a condition that can be successfully corrected with early detection.
