Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Should I definitely see my baby's heartbeat on the ultrasound by eight weeks? Should I be concerned if I don't? And when is the latest I should expect to see it?

Re: Should I definitely see my baby's heartbeat on the ultrasound by eight weeks? Should I be concerned if I don't? And when is the latest I should expect to see it?

The Bump Expert

There are several reasons why you might not see the fetus’s heartbeat at eight weeks. First, you may not really be eight weeks pregnant. You may have menstrual cycles longer than 28 days, or you may have ovulated late that cycle.

The second reason has to do with the type of ultrasound probe your doctor is using.Transabdominal probes (over the belly as opposed to in the vagina) are not as sensitive in detecting pregnancy and early heartbeat.

A heartbeat definitely should be seen if an embryo (or “fetal pole”) is seen, usually as early as six weeks of pregnancy by transvaginal ultrasound.

We didn't se a heartbeat at 6w5d (transvaginal U/S), we're hoping desperately that we see one today at 7w5d. This is our first IVF and first pregancy.

I saw the heartbeat at 9weeks through a vaginal ultrasound, but did not hear it. I heard it at 13weeks with a monitor the dr. used.

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

I saw the heartbeat at 5 weeks 5 days through a transvaginal scan. The abdominal scan at that time was barely even showing the yolk sac.

We had the same thing, no heart beat at 7 weeks, but our OB wanted to have us wait until 8 weeks to check again. Sadly, nothing changed. We had a miscarriage. Our D&C was a couple of days ago.

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

I had my first doctor's appt last Friday I am supposed to be 8wks 4days but baby is measuring approx 2 wks less. My doc did a transvaginal u/s and we saw the sac and embryo but did not see the heartbeat. My doc sent me to the lab to have my hcg levels checked again and scheduled another scan for this coming Friday to see if the heartbeat can be detected. Hopefully all is well!

PAmommytobe | May 31 , 2009 3:47 PM

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

We saw the heartbeat transvaginally at 6w5d. Right back at 8w6d for last appointment with RE before being released to the ob and they said there wasn't a heartbeat anymore. I am now scheduled for a d&c. I know that the baby is dead, but I still have that little worry because I never got to see the u/s - the screen was turned away from the whole time.

kovu | June 06 , 2009 8:23 AM

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

I went in at 8w 1d. The u/s measured the pregnancy at 7w4d but my OB said everything looked "great". When I started bleeding a month later, we found out that she had not seen a heartbeat even at that first visit. So, basically, the baby was already dead at the time of the first appointment. The moral of the story is: make sure you are able to see your ultrasound so that you can see for yourself.

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

You ladies can be frightening! We just found out that we are expecting our first baby....super excited! However, I can't tell you how many women I have come into contact with (via internet or in person) who have quickly informed me that they miscarried their first one! It is so discouraging and has made me terrified that I will do the same. However, there are a few I know of that went throught their first pregnancy fine! I know it is helpful in preparation but its really scary. Please tell me that there are more of you out there that had a normal first pregnancy...( I am sorry, I am just terrified) And francescaraul, I go to the Dr. in the morning for my first u/s, bloodwork, etc and I will be 8 weeks tomorrow. Dont let people scare you!

kaylamwright@gmail.com | June 25 , 2009 7:43 AM

re: Q: No heartbeat at 8 weeks?

This is my first pregnancy as well and I am 10w 6d. My first doctor's appointment was at 6w 6d and even though the doc said everything looked fine, we weren't able to see anything on the ultrasound. She said that it was still very early so I shouldn't be concerned. But of course all I did for the next 4 weeks was freak out and convince myself that my baby had died and I would get the bad news at my next appt. (It didn't help any that I have had hardly any pregnancy symptoms at all.) But yesterday was my next doctor's appointment. She tried using the doppler first to hear a heartbeat but we couldn't hear anything. I thought the worst had happened but then we went and did an ultrasound. We saw the baby, saw the heartbeat, and even got to hear it! It was the most wonderful thing I have ever experienced. So it looks like I have worried myself sick over nothing. I know it is hard to not think about the worst case scenario, but I hope that my story is encouraging and please keep in mind that the odds are in our favor to have healthy pregnancies!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was terrified that I was having a miscarriage, but I did not! Had most of the signs. I am 17 weeks pregnant and still can not hear the heartbeat but can see it. He thinks we can not hear it due to not using the bathroom as much due to the iron in my pre-natals. I find out if its a boy or girl tomorrow!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I'm getting so nervous waiting to get my ultrasound. At 4 or 5 weeks, my first ultrasound showed no signs of a fetal pole (heartbeat). Now, at 11 weeks, they can't find my baby's heartbeat using a doppler. I'm going in for another ultrasound in 10 days, and I'm deflating into a nervous wreck.

I go for my very first prenatal appointment on Tuesday.... I am right around 6 weeks. All they told me when I made the appointment was that they would do a blood test to check my levels and give me a bunch of information..... I didn't even think they'd do an ultrasound my first visit???

Laura thats exactly what they did for me. They will take some basic info from you and some blood. That's it! Then they should make another appointment for about 2 weeks for your first ultrasound. I go in two days for my 8 week one. Good luck!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I had my first doc. appt. at 5 weeks. I am scheduled to go back in 4 weeks but I won't have an ultrasound until 18-22 weeks according to my doctor. Does this sound normal?

nimmerx2 | August 05 , 2009 3:57 PM

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Hi Niimmerx2, It is normal to have your first US @ 12 wks. I had one earlier due to spotting issues. They are tracking mine sooner rather than later. Had a transvaginal US last night and could see the yolk sac and heartbeat at 5w 6 days. We could only see a "dot" and that is the baby. Strange! It is the size of a grain of sugar at this point! The hb was low (90 bpm) where normal is between 120 - 180. However, they said that this early, they probably can't hear all the beats, or it is just beginning to beat, so not to be worried a/b low beats at such an early stage. (Cause it is the size of a grain of sugar!!) Don't worry so much. ; )

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

You Ladies are very terrifying!! I am 6w 5d and I'm going for my first U/S tomorrow and I am terrified that they are not going to see a heartbeat. I do have a question though....for the ladies who found out they had miscarried, first I would like to offer my sincerest sympathies and second I wanted to ask if you continued to feel any of the "pregnancy symptoms" (sore boobs, nausea, fatigue) after your U/S, but before you found out you had miscarried?

TISHA2 | August 20 , 2009 7:48 PM

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

With my first pregnancy my doctor told me to stay off the internet, it was one of the best pieces of advice they gave me. Don't let yourself get scared and worry about miscarriage, if you are taking care of yourself think positively. There is enough information to scare anyone.

I also miscarried my first. I still had sore boobs and saw a heartbeat at 8 weeks. Then I had another ultrasound at 10 weeks and the baby only measured 9 weeks. It is scary and sadly a part of life. Happily, I am pregnant again at 6 weeks and hoping for the best.

zeldagrly | September 09 , 2009 8:36 PM

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Try not to worry ladies. I just had my first u/s a few days ago and I am just now today, at 8wks. My doctor had ordered the u/s because I am having some miserable symptoms. I have a mysterious rash that no one seemed to know why I have (definitely tied to my pregnancy, lucky me) and my morning sickness or all-day-sickness landed me in the hospital with severe dehydration. They've put me on anti-nausea meds but as you can tell, I haven't been on the most pleasant pregnancy ride. No one has accused me of "glowing." So my doctor thought we ought to have a look. Leading up to my ultra sound all the the professionals warned me that it wasn't always possible to see the baby's heartbeat this early. My family practitioner, her nurse, and my midwife all told me the same thing. So honestly, when the gell went on the thing, I didn't have high hopes. Sure enough over the belly brought no results so my midwife moved on to plan B and did a vaginal ultra sound. Let me tell you, that woman was determined to find that heartbeat but I am amazed she did. She rooted around up there for a good ten minutes until she landed on that heartbeat and I will be honest it was a fantastic moment when she found it. My point being, I just as easily could have walked out that day and not seen the heartbeat at all if it hadn't been for my midwife's persistance. It wouldn't have meant it wasn't there, I just wouldn't have seen it.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

i heard and saw the heartbeat at my 6 weeks u/s. A side note, I don't think the doc was suppose to let me hear it. The heart beat was slow, so I had to go in at 8 weeks to see if there was any improvement. That was today and it was normal thank goodness! My next appointment is at 11 weeks to check the NT, where the u/s tech checks the skin thickness on the back of the neck, along with other tests. I can't wait to see the little bean again.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I started spotting at 5 weeks 6 days and went into the emergency room. They were able to barely see the fetus but could not locate a heartbeat. I went into the doctor a few days later but she just checked my hormone levels. She said they were rising. So now I'm scared I have miscarried. I have to wait until this friday until I get another u/s. I will be 9 weeks 5 days. Should I be worried I didn't see a heartbeat at 5 weeks?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

we couldn't see it at 6w 4d, but saw it at 7w, 3d....it also depends on the quality of the machine being used...some ultrasound machines pick up heartbeats in early pregnancies better

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was supposed to be at the end of 8 weeks today - went in for my first aptmnt and the baby only measured 6 wks 2 days - no heartbeat. The doctor wants to look again in 5 days. If there is no heartbeat then - I'm going to hope for the best - just because they don't "see" it does not mean it is not there. I was always the smallest one growing up and everybody thought there was something wrong with me - tried putting me on growth hormones but I turned out fine - I'm hoping this little one is just developing at his/her own sweet pace.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I'm new to this site but just wanted to respond. I had my first appt yesterday at 6w6d. Doc saw gest sac and fetal pole but no hb but he said the fetal pole was moving up and down. My hcg has gone up from 67000 to 104000 which my doc says is a good sign but I am spotting too which could be a not so good sign. I'm scheduled for another us in about 10 days so hopefully everything will be alright. It is nice to know I am not alone in this situation. Good luck to all of you.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I am 8 wks 4 days pregnant and had my first apt today, blood work, urine test etc but no US, the dr. wont do one until the Nuchal testing between 12-14 wks. We begged the dr to try and find a heartbeat with the monitor (not a vaginal US) but she told us it would be near impossible to hear this early on. We didn't hear it but she said this was normal. Said that the baby grows so fast during this time that days make the difference. We are going back in two wks to listen to the heartbeat. My dr. says that 10 wks is the norm to hear the heartbeat so I hope this makes some feel better that haven't heard it yet! I know I'm a bit freaking out after reading some responses, but stay possitive! Its healthy for the baby! :)

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

It's very easy to forget when reading all of these posts that the risk of miscarriage is 10 - 25% and 50 - 75% of those miscarriages happen before 4 weeks. One could easily think the statistics were much worse reading all of these stories. For the women that had miscarriages there are places you can go for support like mend.org and aplacetoremember.com. This website is for women that are excited to learn about their pregnancies. No one can deny the reality of miscarriages, we are all fully aware of them. But for now I would like to surround myself in positive, uplifting information rather than one sad story after another. This is my very last online discussion about pregnancy I will ever read.

i went yesterday for my first appt. they did an ultrasound on the abdomin and transv adn didn't find a heartbeat adn im' at 10 weeks but i still have hope that they simply couldn't hear it. the hospital i use has a bad reputation for hurrying into procedures without double checking so i'm making them do blood work and another ultrasound in a week to see if they pick anything up then...i'm praying every night that they will adn im' counting down...im' just a little upset that they weren't willing to give my baby a chance they just tell me that i should miscarry within a week and if not they're just going to take it out...wouldn't it make more sense to double check? so please pray for my little one....it's in gods hands now

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

OK i know it must be hard to have a miscarriage, ladies who have not please do not give yourself extra worries. we are going through alot as it is already. acouple things 1. spotting is normal and sometimes even heavier bleeding 2. blood test and ultrasounds togther will give you the best answer NOT one or the other. 3 I had my first child 10 years ago i did not know i was pregnant until i was 13 weeks! scary yes it was but i was young did not take care of my self and had never heard of prenatal vitamins and my daughter is going to be 10 she is healthy and happy and a great kid!! i am now 8 weeks pregnant saw a heart beat at 6 weeks after not seeing one at 5 and having some spotting. My best advise is this....God is good no matter what he will always do whats right it may not be what we want but it is and will be ok. i had to come to grips with this when i thought i was loosing this child. My husbands away in Afghanistan and we are going to be just fine and so will all of you :) those who are pregnant and those who have lost something so tiny yet precious. Another thing the alpha feta protein testing that they do to check for birth defects can be quite scary My 10 year old was suppost to have severe spina bifida based on those labs and did not at all , so unless you'd have an abortion based on the results you might not want to put yourself through that stress either.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was pregnant 2 yrs ago and went to my first U/S at 8wks. i didn't even realize i was supposed to see anything or hear a heartbeat because i was in a U/S tech office, not with my usual doc so i wasn't as open to asking questions. they did the trans V and sent me home... the doc scheduled me for another U/S the following week and when the tech started she was asking me weird questions, like had i been sick, or were my breasts sensative, i didn't start to worry until then and when i asked if anything was wrong she said to ask my doc. I found out 3 days later i was losing the baby. i was so angry with myself for not doing some research or even asking someone what i should have expected... but it was a learning experience b/c now i'm on the ball.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

THANK YOU mknudson614. It is definitely easy to forget the miscarriage stats. My aunt spoke to me about this issue because, like many of you ladies with the misc. fears, I was scared to death too. But my aunt let me know that many of the ladies on pregnancy websites tend to be in their 30s (just liker her) and that the misc. rates are higher in older women. My aunt had 2-3 misc. and she told me it was because of her age. And it's true. I'm not saying it happens only older women, of course not. It could happen to anyone. But people, do your research. I came into this board to read on ultrasounds and all I am left with reading is about women who have had miscarriages. And just like mknudson614, I will avoid these online pregnancy discussions most of the time or at least go to the positive boards. There's plenty of information out there on the internet to scare people.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

TO FINISH FROM WHAT I WAS SAYING.. AFTER a week from the ER visit I had another ultrasound and blood work. When i went to my doctor she was shocked and confused. She said my blood went from 140 to 50,000 in one week. Also she said that from last week when the ER said there was a baby and sac but no cardiac activity. The ultrasound yesterday said now there is no baby, just a sac. I havent had any bleeding nor have i passed anything. CONFUSED AND SAD is what im feeling. I went to the doctor today expecting to schedule a d&c. And here she telle me the hcg level drastically changed and now they dont see a baby in the sac.But last monday they did...... What in the world me and my husband cannot believe everything that is going on right now. Tomorrow i have to go for blood work again and wait til monday to go to a high risk specialist to get another ultrasound.. Next Tuesday go back to the doctor.. back and forth back and forth... Its crazy every day i have no answers and nobody can give them to me. Im so scared because friends and family are telling me if its not alive and just sitting in my body i can get diff. types of cancer and not be able to have children ever again.... I feel lost and hopeless and now withtout a job. Im praying now that my body doesnt have any major effects from what could be a huge mistake..

I've had two pregnancies in which they DID see the heartbeat and then I went on to miscarry (one of them was the next day) so I think that you can't always rely on ultrasounds early on. Remember that stressing over it isn't good for you or the baby. This most recent pregnancy of mine they could not detect the heartbeat early on but 7 months later I had a perfectly healthy baby girl. Trust your gut, I've always kinda known when I was going to miscarry something just didn't quite feel right. Anyways, Good Luck!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was able to see the heart beat with this pregnancy at 6 weeks 3 days. My last pregnancy turned out to be tubal and they were unable to even see a fetus anywhere through ultra sound at 6 weeks because it was not growing the way it should have been so it wasnt visible through ultra sound. I had another past pregnancy where the doctor couldnt find the heart beat at 12 weeks of pregnancy, she said the baby only grew till about 9 weeks. And I agree with SamanthaMarie21, you KNOW your body and you can feel it when something isnt right.. Definitely trust your gut!!!!

I was 6wk 2days when I saw my baby's heartbeat. But we couldn't hear it. Next time I go to the Dr I'll be 10 weeks. I'm really looking forward to hearing the heartbeat <3>

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

The replies are scarey! My first appointment is Thursday at 8 weeks 6 days. I really want to hear or see the baby so it is real and not just an image that is making me extremely sick. The extremely sick factor is helpoing me believe that everything is alright. I wouldn't be sick if the baby had died, right?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Usually morning sickness is related to hormone changes..if you are still sick things are probably going as they should. I am 7wks 5 days & have been sick since before finding out I was pregnant. Thats the main thing that keeps me aware that everything is good :) Haven't had my first appt except for 2 ultrasounds b/c of a subchorionic hematoma that hopefully is resolving. You may not hear a heartbeat till later but it should show on ultrasound around the end of the 5th wk. (thats what my OB says and I'm also an RN so kind of knew this myslef too) Hope this helps :)

I want to add to the stats that if you have already seen or heard a heartbeat the chances of a miscarriage drop to about a 2%. So please keep a positive outlook. Remember that whatever stresses mom also stresses baby...good luck ladies!

I just went for our first US. I'm at 6.5 ish weeks and was able to hear the heartbeat...it was measured at 103 bpm which I was told by the tech was right on track. She said they like for it to be over 90 by about this time in the preg.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

To all of you this is my first pregnancy and so far everything is going great. I had my first Dr. appt this past week and also had an US. At 7weeks 5days i got a great picture of the baby and got to hear the heartbeat which was at 165! it was the most amazing thing ive ever heard. To those of you that are having a rough time remember worry does not empty tomarrow of its sorrow. it empties today of its strength and for every problem there is a Divine gift within it. and we all know what Divine gift we get out of all of this!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

you guys are all scaring me. I am 8 weeks and have my second u/s tomorrow. I had one at 4w 6d and I could only see the gestational sac. I saw on here that someone said if you are feeling sick that usually means things are going good. I just started getting sick at 6 1/2 weeks and am still sick. Are you guys sure thats a good sign? I am worried that I wont b able to see the baby or a heartbeat. Should I be this worried? Or do you think since I am having all the symptoms like nauseous, sore boobs, exhausted, and starving that it means everything is good?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I am 32 6 or 7 weeks pregnant with my second and having cramps and morning sickness even though I have polycystic ovarian syndrome (which makes me much more likely to miscarry). However, I had all the same cramping my first pregnancy. My son is 15 years old and was a healthy baby even though I was in a car wreck and had preterm labor 3 times and preeclampsia. I can tell you with him, I was 14 weeks and could not go to the bathroom but didn't know that was why I was in so much abdominal pain. An ultrasound revealed a normal growing, very active fetus. My problem was my prenatals had too much iron and my bowels bond up causing extreme pain. My doctor switched me to another prenatal vitamin and all was good. A friend of mine had a blighted ovum a few months back and I worried about that this time because she's my age. However, my HCG numbers were going up normally, my first ultrasound is in 2 days but I'm not worried. My friend is now 9 weeks with a healthy baby. All I can tell you is that you worry through your whole pregnancy and most of the time its for nothing. If you have a miscarriage there was something wrong and you wouldn't want that baby to be born with whatever was wrong with it would you? Its so sad when a child is born with problems. Remember, if you got pregnant the first time, that means you are able to do it again. So remember the more you worry the more likely you are to stress your body and baby and that alone could lead to problems.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I had a m/c in January. We just found out we are pregnant again. At six weeks and five days there was no heartbeat for the first pregnancy and they recommended a D & C. I wish now I would have waited. I'm super nervous with this one. I didn't even make an appointment until week eight. I hope to see a heartbeat this time. We are so excited! It will be our first child.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my first child. I had my first appointment today. My Dr. didn't do an ultrasound, but did use the doppler to try and hear the heartbeat. She couldn't hear it, but assured me this was quite normal this early in my pregnancy. My next appointment is at 12 weeks and I am hoping I will hear the heartbeat then. Trying not to worry is the most difficult part for me.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I know that it is common, but that doesn't make it any easier to learn that a pregnancy is not viable. I went for my 2nd ultrasound today. My first was at 5 weeks--we could only see the gestational sac and nothing else, so we went back today, 8 w 2 days. No heartbeat and the sac only measured at a size indicative of 6 weeks, meaning the pregnancy is not viable. I am, however, still experiencing symptoms of pregnancy, including breast tenderness, morning sickness, and sensitivity to smell. Hard to believe that the pregnancy is over just as I was beginning to wrap my head around the idea of being a mom!

Wow I am so happy I found this site. I am with my first but I am 38yr old. I'm heavy set to begin with and I know I will automatically be thrown to "high risk" I'm not feeling sick... just a little naucious but I drink water and it goes away. I've been walking after I eat and getting more fruits and veggies in my belly... well I ate some OREOS... baby wanted them. I never liked them before... and stuffed popers... (not at the same time) I'm crossing my fingers on 8/4/8. That will be my first OBGY appt... and I can't wait to shop once I hear the heartbeat... I'm being positive and that is the best we can and shall do. For everyone who had a miscarriage. I wish you all the best and try again.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

According to my LMP I went in for an ultrasound expecting to be 7wks 1 day, didn't see the heart beat until I had the transvaginal U/S. Embryo measured at 5wk4days but there was a heart beat... all a little too confusing considering they say you not meant to see it till 6 weeks but I thought that I was furthur along anyway.. Had some spotting so will go for another U/S in a week to have another look and make sure bub is growing... hormones are increasing so that is a positive ;)

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

We went in early because I was so worried... First appointment didn't show anything but an empty sac. I freaked out and cried and cried because I just went through a loss in January. Then I prayed and prayed. I've never prayed so hard. In any event, the following week we went and the baby measured 7w1d and looked great with a steady heartrate of 148 bpm. It was so exciting! We went back at 9w1d and the little peanut was right on target length-wise and we could see the heartbeat and movement in his arms. I go again next week, 12w1d. I can't wait to see him again and I really hope all is still well! After one loss, it's hard not to worry all the time. For those of you have that had a miscarriage, I did too, and the second conception is going great.. there is always hope!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Hello all! Just wanted to add that first pregnancies can (and do) go very well...I saw/heard my first son's heartbeat transvaginally at just over 7 weeks and went on to deliver a full term, very healthy, and now adorable 2 year old, baby boy. Now I'm back at 7 weeks and though we saw the flicker of the heartbeat, we couldn't hear the heartbeat. I think it's normal to be a bit anxious, but worried I am not. Worry really made my first pregnancy miserable and the absence of that worry has already made this one that much better! Good luck everyone!

My last pregnancy I miscarried and the heart never started... This time at 6wk4day the heartbeat was visible fluttering with transvaginal U/S... There is nothing to prevent a miscarriage... All you have to do is keep your faith. It took us 5 yrs to get pregnant again after the miscarriage of the last pregnancy.. I only get 1 ultrasound, at 20 weeks. It isn't exactly normal to get all of these ultrasounds all the time like everyone says. I go for my first real appt in 2 weeks (it'll be 10 weeks) to hear the heartbeat and such. Then its only once a month. You all are lucky to get ultrasounds all the time!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Went for ultrasound yesterday. Thought I was seven weeks, but apparently just over six. The measurements were good, but the heartrate was 83. The doc said it should be around 120, and that there's a 50/50 change I will miscarry. Have next appt. on Tuesday morning. Very nervous. Is it better to see a low heartrate or none at all? Anyone with similar stories and a happy ending?

Ladies! Remember the most important thing you can do for yourself is to stay positive! I have to remind myself that at times as well! My huband and i went for our first ultrasound this past Friday! We measured at 7w3d (which was only a few days off of my count.) The nurse did a transvaginal ultrasound and we definitely saw the very fast racing heartbeat of our future child! We can only hope and pray that our pregnancy remains healthy and produces a healthy child!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

We've been trying over 4 years to get pregnant and even went through fertility treatments. I am 30 yrs old and 12wks with my first child. My first ultrasound was in the E/R due to heavy bleeding and cramping and I was 6wks and we seen the heartbeat. Went back to the Dr 2 days later for a follow-up and my doctors have a mobile ultrasound unit so they did another one to check and everything was fine. Had my first visit with the doc 11/29. I was a little over 10wks and they couldn't pick up the hb on the doppler so they did an u/s again and his heartbeat is 140. I'm high risk which is why I'm assigned a Dr instead of a midwife. I feel very reassured because our Dr goes through the trouble of making sure we know everythings ok. Thank god for ultrasounds and good doctors!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Ladies i know it's hard waiting for each ultrasound. I've had 2 miscarries even before the 1st ultra sound. Please try and stay calm. Eat healthy, stay active and try to destress. Know that 15-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. That's a lot. Also there is nothing you can do to make or prevent a miscarriage from happening... those are the words from my doctor! I personally had my 1st ultra sound 1 week ago, we weren't sure how far along I was, but found out we are 7 weeks. Got to see the heart beat and the sac and yolk. Your ultra sound techs should be letting you see the screen during the process. If they are not, ask to see the screen! I'm sorry for all of your losses. GL to the rest of you!

I was rushed to the hospital at 6w2days with a possible appendix rupture. It turned out to be a ruptured cyst that had irritated my appendix. It didn't have to come out, but it was recommended. Appendix surgery that early in the game is very risky. I chose not to have the surgery and got to stay in the hospital for 4 days on bed rest to make sure all was well. They had done an U/S when I first got the ER and I didn't even think to look at the U/S because I was in delirious amounts of pain. Yesterday I had my 2nd U/S at 8w1d and all is well with our baby! I got to see the heartbeat! Now I can't wait to hear it later on.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was having a lot of abdominal cramping throughout my entire pregnancy. It was terrible cramping that would awaken me at night, I almost would be in tears! My OB (fearing for ectopic or miscarriage) wanted to check and B HCG level and pelvic u/s at 5wk 3days. The U/S dr. said there was no fetal pole and that I should expect to miscarry in the next couple of days. I was so heartbroken! My OB scheduled me for a D&C on Tuesday but first wanted to check to see if my levels B HCG levels were still rising on Monday. Monday came, and my levels were still rising, so she scheduled me for another u/s that day. When I got the U/S it showed a normal fetal pole and I saw the heart beat and D&C was canceled! I was 5wks 6days. I'm now 8wks today, first "real" ob appointment is next week... and the abdominal pain (which I discovered later was from the uterus stretching)... totally gone! Moral of the story... a day or two can change EVERYTHING!!! Stay hopeful and prayerful!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I would like to get some advise from some of you ...i went last Friday for my first ultrasound...by the date of my last period i should have been 8 and a half weeks...my cycles were really irregular before i started on the clomid. the doctor did a regular ultra sound for about 3 or 4 mins to tell me that my uterus was tilted and she would have to do a vaginal after my pap...when she did my vaginal she kept saying the same thing...my uterus was tilted...then she proceeded to wrap it up by saying "i know this isn't what you want to hear but there is no heartbeat and the baby is measure 6 and a half weeks, meaning that the baby died 2 weeks prior i recommend a D&C. We can do it now or you can go home and process it and come back and we will do it then or you can wait to miscarry on your own" my husband said that he wanted to get another ultrasound in a few weeks to see...i have had NO bleeding or cramping and still feel pregnant...my boobs aren't as sensitive as they were though, i spoke with my friend who is a PA and she told me they should have done a beta quant....which they did not...so i asked to have the test and the nurse told me i didn't need it that it wouldn't show anything...i proceeded to tell her that i wanted to have the blood work done today and then again in a few days to see where i stand...is there a possibility that there could be a heartbeat that was unable to be heard because i was only 6 and a half weeks, or having a tilted uterus? The 2 ultrasounds together were only about 15 mins max....i just wanna make sure before i do anything...anyone with any advise please help...this is our first and we are devastated and really don't know what to believe or who to trust!!!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

My midwife tried the Dopler at 12 weeks, 5 days and could not hear a heartbeat. My husband and I were terrified, and had an ultrasound scheduled right away. During the ultrasound, we could clearly see the beating heart and see the baby rolling around. Now at 17 weeks, the Dopler picked up the baby's heartbeat very clearly. I'm sharing this because I read the post and responses above hoping for reassurance before the ultrasound; unfortunately, I didn't see much in the way of that, and was very scared. Hopefully my experience will help someone else feel a little more positive if they find themselves in the same situation. Best of luck to all!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

My husband and I went in for our first ultrasound when i was THOUGHT to be 6 weeks along - we saw the gestational sac and yok sac but no heartbeat. The doctor made it seem like we definitely should have seen something and presented us her most "logical" reason as "failure to thrive." She had me take additional bloodwork to measure my hcg levels which were off the charts (rapidly rising, as they should be), and then the next day the nausea set in. Turns out we were NOT as far along as originally thought, and she scared us for no good reason! Needless to say we have since found another doctor, who agreed that I was probably only 4-5 weeks at the first ultrasound. Listen to your instincts and seek out another OB if they give you unnecessary anxiety!

OK, ladies. I was terrified after I read all the previous posts four hours prior to my first appointment with my OB. But, luckily, everything went fine for me. I'm at 8 Weeks even and the my doctor did an transabdominal ultrasound and saw the heartbeat. My husband and I were trying out best to see it, and I THINK I saw it, it was very tiny and the movement was very hard to follow on a tiny screen. But anyway, everything went fine for me. So I would like to add som e positive posts on here to give the majority moms-to-bes some hope. As my mother-in-law said, sometimes, ignorance is a bliss.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

A year ago, we found out we were pregnant. At my first prenatal visit (at 8wks), we were told everything looked good- but were not given an ultrasound until a week later. At the U/S, we found out that the baby did not progress past 5 weeks. There were remnants of the egg sac and bleeding. We had no idea it happened since I did not bleed out. I had a D & C 2 days later. Now, we are again 8 weeks along. Had our first prenatal visit today. We were not originally scheduled to have an U/S as before, but with assistance/persistence from our nurse and given my recent history, they were able to squeeze us in. I am happy to say that everything is exactly where it should be and we were able to see the heartbeat on the screen. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen- like a little strobe light. So, there is hope for everyone. And prayer does help!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I just went to a pregnancy aid center three days ago to confirm that I was pregnant after having a positive result on a home pregnancy test. A trans-vaginal ultrasound was performed and no heartbeat could be seen or heard, and i was told that I was at about eight weeks. The u/s technician was limited practice, so she advised that I get a second opinion. I went to the ER because I didn't have anywhere else to go and I really wanted to know as soon as possible. The doctor there also could find no heartbeat, but he also said nothing at all was showing up on the ultrasound. Apparently, according to them, I had already miscarried....which I have not. I still have hope that the baby is fine because the doctor said my pregnancy hormone levels were still high, and a lot of friends and family have told me stories where they couldn't find a heartbeat either. I am also still having pregnancy symptoms. I will go back to the doctor in another week or two to see what is going on, but until then I will stay positive.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I had an ultrasound today at 7w2d, based on lmp. We saw a tiny gestational sac and nothing else. I could've sworn I saw a faint flicker inside the sac. When my hubby and I asked the tech about it, she said it could be resonance from my own heart. Has anyone ever heard of this? Anyway, this whole ordeal is scaring me because I lost a pregnancy two years ago in the early stages. I had a blighted ovum--that is when nothing else but the gestational sack develops. I know the chances of having a second blighted ovum are extremely rare, but this just seemed like the same situation all over again. Ughhhh... I'm going to call the doc on Monday and let her know what the tech said and see what she thinks we should do next. In the mean time, pray for me and my little bean... it took me two years to work up the nerve to TTC again, I can't imagine what I'd do if I lost this little guy. My husband and I already love him/her so much. By the same token, if we wallow in our sorrows, we wind up hurting our babies anyway. So in the spirit of remaining hopeful ladies, have a wonderful Easter with your family and have a talk with God and the little one inside of you...come to terms with what a possible loss might be like and hope and pray for a happy, healthy baby!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I'm starting to wonder if reading these Q&A entries is more of a hazard to my mental health regarding this pregnancy!!!! This is my second pregnancy and I am 9w 6d along. I find myself being WAY more paranoid about miscarriage than I was with my last pregnancy 10.5 years ago. Maybe too much information isn't healthy.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I was at the Dr at 10W3D and we could not hear the hear beat either with the Doppler, however my DR said it is very normal not hear it at this point if the uterus is still too low behind the pelvis they just cannot get a reading through the bone. The stories on here do make me wonder about reading these as there seems to be a lot of doom and gloom.....I say do not worry as the more you worry the more you can help make a story worse. I was reading that if you have anxiety or worry a lot this affects your blood pressure which affects the baby and can cause anxiety in the baby which it can carry into life. You have to choose to believe the DR and know that if it is meant to be it will be

I won't be hearing the heartbeat until I'm 14 weeks. Yay Canada and our awesome "free" health care. These posts have me terrified something's going to be wrong - my doctor wasn't lying when she said stay off the internet :(

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Okay.. I must must must tell my story. According to my LMP I am almost 9 weeks. I had an HSG done by my fertility specialist on April 25th. I got pregnant shortly after that. They did vaginal ultra sounds and checked HSG levels, everything looked good. Last week (week 7) My fertility specialist said it doesn’t look like there is any fetal development and referred me back to my OBGYN. He agreed with the fertility specialist diagnosis and scheduled me for a D & C. The day before the D & C we went for one more ultra sound just to make sure. The technician said everything looked good (no fetal development), but she said why rush? She asked us about our HCG levels. We haven’t done any in a while to see if they dropped. So they took blood. The next day they called, my HCG levels went up. (June 6th- 47 thousand & June 15th- 55 thousand) We have another ultra sound next Tuesday. I have had no spotting, cramping, or bleeding. My question is, can this happen to people? Can their baby develop slowly? My doctor is so convinced I’m going to miscarry that he said he’ll eat my chart if the baby develops

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I definitely have to agree. You guys are scaring the hell out of me. I am pregnant for the first time and have never been so scared of miscarriage. Everytime I pee I look to make sure that I am not bleeding. When the US tech did a pelvic us she said that she could see a heartbeat and I definitely couldn't. When she did the transvaginial that is when I got to see and hear the heartbeat. I was 7w2d. Try and relax. Maybe you aren't 8 weeks like you thought you were. I'm sure you doctor will order another us in a week to make sure that everything is ok.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I had both ultrasounds (belly and transvaginal) at 7 weeks 1 day and there was no heartbeat or fetal pole, just a black hole/sac. I was 100% convinced I had lost the baby, but I had a bloodtest for my beta levels and they are still high/right on target. The dr. says I may still have a viable pregnancy but I am still so worried. Has anyone ever had that and had the baby be ok?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

My doctor wasn't happy with my ultrasound in my 8th week considering there was a weak heartbeat at 6 weeks. He said there is still a 40% chance this is still a good pregnancy, and has asked us to come back for another ultrasound next week. If it's not viable, and if I haven't miscarried by then, he'll give me a pill to initiate evacuation. A few days before the ultrasound I felt all of a sudden like I wasn't pregnant anymore: no more queasiness, renewed energy, sense of smell back to normal. My instinct is that I am not pregnant anymore, but my boyfriend is still holding on to the hope that we are. I will wait for the doctor to confirm. My question is: am I carrying a dead baby inside of me right now? Why won't it pass through? I still have swollen breasts and bloated tummy, but no other signs. Has anyone else gone through this?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

My OB thought I was about 8-9 weeks along but when we did the Ultrasound the baby is only measuring 5wks and 5 days and their was no heartbeat. I have went for one set of labs and I have to go do another set tomorrow. I go back for another Ultrasound on Friday. This is my second baby and I am very nervous. I am praying that I am just very early and everything is o.k. with my baby.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

When do the doctors usually let you hear the heart beat? I have my first appointment 2 days before I'll be 9 weeks along.. not sure what to expect at the appointment. I have had all the tests(STD, etc) done form the OB last annual appointment b/c she knew I would be trying.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I will have my second appointment tomorrow at 6w 3d. My first appointment they took my history, urine and blood. I'll get my lab results and a pelvic exam tomorrow. I had a LEEP procedure about 12 weeks ago. I'm partly nervous about the appointment and my doctor's office has pretty much said no u/s until 11-12 weeks. I'll keep you ladies posted. Honestly, reading these posts can be scary, but it's nice to have a dose of reality.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Well...I'm 12 weeks along, went in today and couldn't get a good strong heartbeat. First, the midwife assistant felt around for it, thought she found it a couple of times and tried chasing it, but the baby was elusive. She got the senior midwife, who did the same thing and got real excited upon hearing this dull "thud" every so often, followed by loud static-like noise. She said the thuds were kicks and the noise was movement. She, too, got a trace of a heartbeat a couple of times and tried chasing it, but said "the little stinker won't cooperate!" lol She said sometimes they can get a heartbeat with the Doppler at 12 weeks, sometimes not, and told me I could come back in a week to listen for a heartbeat, or I could get an u/s quicker...of course, I'm opting for the u/s! ;) So to all you mamas stressin'...don't! In most cases, your baby probably isn't being very cooperative, either!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I went in for my ultrasound at 8.5 weeks and they didn't see heartbeat. The sac was the correct size for 8 weeks, but the fetal pole was only 5 weeks in size. I go back in 6 days to try again. It is our first pregnancy and we are very sad. I'm nervous to miscarry and just as scared for the D & C. We have all ready told all our family and friends about the pregnancy. I am still having symptoms such as breast tenderness and nausea, but my enery level is back up. I have been having some light crapming as well. It is all very scary.

I am 14 weeks and the doctor couldn't find a heart beat right away on my third check up. I was very scared, after 25 minutes passed by we heard a heart beat which made me very happy and emotional.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I am 8 weeks pregnant and went for my 2nd US yesterday. My first US at 7 weeks showed an empty sac and no heartbeat. This week the embryo was there and we saw what we thought is the heartbeat. But... confusingly enough my doctor said that he's not sure if it's the baby's heartbeat or if it's an echo of mine? That doesn't make any sense to me. We saw the pulsing on the screen. Do I need to get a new doctor? Is it possible that the pulse we saw is mine even though it was on the embryo?

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I saw my baby's heartbeat on my first visit I was 7weeks along w/ the vaginal ultrasound. However my last visit they were not able to hear it over the stomach w/ the doppler. Dr. said b/c only 11 weeks. I am not worried I did see it on my first visit. Everyone else on other had was making me a bit nervous. But my next appt will be her before I know it

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

My last pregnancy I was 5 weeks along and had bleeding. We saw baby's heartbeat with the vaginal US. Then at 10 weeks there was no heartbeat and I miscarried that day. Now I'm 7 weeks along and just started bleeding and cramping. The US is in two days. I'm visiting my sister in the Dominican Republic in 19 days. Not sure what to think or feel. I'm sorry if this is discouraging, but those of us who have had miscarriages need support just as much as those going through normal pregnancies.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I will hear the heartbeat for the first time at 16 weeks and my first ultrasound at almost 20 weeks when we find out the gender. I am 11 weeks right now. My Dr.'s reasoning was that because we were confident on the due date (we were tracking when we conceived) there was no need to check the heartbeat or schedule an ultrasound. I wish everyone the best!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

I saw my baby's heartbeat at about 6 weeks through transvaginal ultrasound, just saw it flicker. Then at high risk OB visit 3 days later, through same type of ultrasound they gave me a rate of 118.

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

With my first pregnancy, I heard a heart beat at exactly 6 weeks. I went back at 12 weeks and they couldn't find a heart beat. I lost the baby at 6 weeks and 1 day. I guess I learned that you just never know. I'm 8 weeks along now in my second pregnancy (over a year later) and I'm going to my Dr. tomorrow, praying for the best! I saw a few posts discouraging people from sharing their miscarriage stories, and I kind of felt the same until I had one and met reality. Then I wished I would have recognized the possibility, because I felt blindsided, which was one of the hardest parts in coming to terms with my loss. It's good to stay positive, but also realistic.

What about anti-aging therapies? Could that work in this situation given that doctors will come up with certain new developments? That would surely prove useful. Hope you find my suggestion useful. Good luck and may God bless you and your children!!

Q&A: No heartbeat in early pregnancy?

Based off my last menstral cycle my doctor has put me at ten weeks and one day today. At previous appointments my doctors says that by my betta levels he thinks i was only at approximately 5 weeks. I went in yesterday for my first ultra sound they first did one normally and we seen nothing. After we had went in and did a transvaginal ultra sound the tech had moved the screen away from me and i saw nothing. I had my mother and boyfriend their with me and they were watching the whole time. Thinking i was ten week i was a bit worried by the look on their faces. I asked "can you see anything" because i couldnt hear a heart beat or see the screen. They sadly shook their heads no. The ultra sound tech moved the screen toward me and showed me the gestational sac and the yolk sac. I had no idea what this meant. I go back this friday to see my doctor so he can give me a little more of an insight. I am praying that all is well this is my first pregnancy and i cant bear to think of the thought of losing my baby it will crush me. After reading stories of other women i have some hope that things are just simply a mis calculation of the pregnancy but you can never be too sure.
