Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

“Morning” sickness is a lie -- I feel nauseous all day! Any tips on soothing it?

Re: “Morning” sickness is a lie -- I feel nauseous all day! Any tips on soothing it?

The Bump Expert

Dr. Ashley Roman: Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill for curing that horrible, about-to-barf-any-second sensation.  But, there are some things you can do to try to minimize it:

Try to eat frequent small meals throughout the day, focusing on stomach-friendly foods like starchy carbs, yogurt and avoiding greasy and spicy foods. An empty stomach only increases nausea. Keep saltine crackers by your bed so that you can snack on a couple before getting up in the morning.

Prevent dehydration (another nausea trigger) by sipping small amounts of water throughout the day and eating hydrating foods like popsicles.

You can also try Sea-Bands, which are oh-so-stylish stretchy wrist bands proven to reduce nausea by stimulating acupressure points. (They’re available at most drugstores.)

Vitamin B6 has been shown in scientific studies to reduce early pregnancy nausea. Taking 10 or 25 mg tablets up to four times a day can help soothe the nauseated tummy. Ginger capsules 250 mg taken up to four times daily has also been shown in scientific studies to reduce nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy.

Finally, if you’re spending a good part of the day over the toilet or simply can’t stomach the thought of waiting until your second trimester to feel better, ask your doctor about over-the-counter or prescription medications that might help.

“Morning” sickness can be dangerous for both you and the baby if you are losing more than 10% of your baseline weight or if you are unable to keep down even sips of water. If you are losing significant weight or cannot keep anything down, these may be signs of a more serious problem, so talk to your doctor.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Help?

A big help this pregnancy (last time it was peppermint hard candies) are lollipops - I'm partial to Dum-Dums, but lots of people swear by Preggy Pops. Jolly Ranchers and other hard candies are just as good, but I'd steer clear of 'creamy' hard candies (Werthers, Nips, Creme Savers) to be safe.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Help?

I hate to say it, but if you are feeling anything like I did, ask your doctor for an anti-nauseas medication such as Phenergan. I went through the 24 hour a day sickness for about 3 weeks before I really wondered how much longer I could take it before I went crazy. I finally called my doctor, in tears I may add, and told her the small meals, hard candy, eating crackers and water before you get out of bed, peppermint, additional water, etc just weren't cutting it for me. This medication is offered orally, contrary to what some may tell you, and is completely safe for your baby. After I got my first 'script I could totally see the light at the end of the tunnel within 2 hours! After that I took one pill 3 times a day until I began to notice I didn't have to take it right on schedule without getting sick. Eventually it should end for you, mine ended at about 12 weeks. I really hope this helps. I know some would rather suffer through it, but come on do you really want to when you don't have to??? Again, hope this helps and I wish you the absolute best of luck!

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

If something sounds appealing...try it! It just might help, after all. I wanted kettle chips and a slurpee, and that was the first thing that stopped the nausea! Now, if I can find what I'm craving and eat it, I'm pretty nausea free!

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

Eating something high in protein helps me. Lately I've found that eating creamy yogurt as soon as I get up in the morning and anytime I feel nausea coming on really helps. Also, I force myself (even if I don't feel hungry) to eat some yogurt or other high protein snack right before I go to bed. That seems to help me avoid feeling sick in the morning. Also, I've been taking B-6 twice a day and that seems to help a lot.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I experienced morning sickness in the first and third trimester. My secret was cold sparkling cider (apple or grape). It did the trick! Preggie drops or pops came in handy and my doc tipped me to keeping some dry cereal by the bed so I can eat a little in the morning before getting up and moving around. It worked. My prenatals always seemed to make me feel even more nauseous, so the doc also told me I could supplement with 2 flinstones complete vitamins in the beginning!

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I am about 11 weeks and 4 days pregnant and still in the first trimester experiencing alot of the pregnancy sickness. Everyday I feel nauseated and feel like I cannot work. I am attempting different things to see if I can curb it but it's very hard. I have tried saltines and after a while I feel sick by them. They say to keep saltines by your bed in the morning so you can eat them before getting up but the thought of eating saltines first thing in the morning makes me feel nauseous. I have also tried hard candy like lemon drops and peppermints but they don't seem to help too much at all. I heard ginger ale might help which I might try next. Any other suggestions??

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

i had terrible morning sickness for the first 6 months with my first child. i am only in my 6th week right now but can tell you that the feeling is starting to come back. I always keep crackers, plastic bags, ginger ale and tums with me at all times. i also found that if i ate a banana in the morning, it helped to alleviate some symptoms. i always think about it like this.....it does not last forever and it is a small sacrifice for a new life.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

for me, what seems to be helping right now is ginger tea. I make some herbal mint tea and slice ginger root right into it. I keep a big jug in the fridge and drink a glass or two first thing in the morning. Only have had the queesies a few times since I started the routine.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I am 6 1/2 weeks pregnant, and my morning sickness just kicked in about 4 days ago...while we were on vacation in Orlando-I've yet to vomit, but I have horrible nausea, I can't stand the thought of most foods... I do not care for saltines, but I do like the club crackers, they make me feel better. Also, my mom told me to eat ginger snaps, but just the smell makes me sick, so I started drinking ginger ale, which seems to be helping...

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

i have to agree...im 6 weeks now and the nausea has officially kicked in...i feel like i can't get out of bed in the morning or make it through my work day. i haven't tried the preggie pops or tea (because i can't stomache the thought of drinking it), but believe it or not Tostitos help a lot! i usually start with a low fat strawberry smoothie from panera and move over to the Tostitos before having my actual breakfast and it seems to be working:)

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I feel better reading that I'm not the only one! My nausea kicked in a few days ago; I'm well into week six now. It comes in waves all day. I crave frozen orange juice. Strange. Its the only thing I want all day. I've lost that ravenous appetite I had for the last few weeks, too. That's probabl a good thing, I can't wear any of my old pants anymore!

Melis11 | January 28 , 2008 7:35 PM

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I'm half way through week 6 and the nausea seemed to kick in right when the week started. Mine also comes in waves. I have also been getting head aches, which I never really had before the pregnancy. But as someone else pointed out, small price to pay for a beautiful baby :) I'm keeping my eyes on the prize!

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

If you're really sick - as in losing weight and none of the usual tricks are helping - ask your doc if you might have hyperemesis gravidarum. It sucks - but the treatments can help. There are meds available and an IV can break a cycle of vomiting. And remember - it's a temporary condition and does get better.

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

Ughh, me too... all day feeling like I am on the verge of vomitting and most foods sound disgusting. I have been wearing the Sea Bands and they are at least letting me function although I still gets waves of nausea with them on. I wouldn't be able to do or eat anything if I didn't have them though. You can get them at pretty much any drug store for about $10, look by the dramamine and other motion sickness drugs. Good thing is they aren't medicine just accupressure. Good luck everyone!

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

i've been suffering on and off for the last 7 weeks, mostly in the evenings, and here's what seems to work for me. Good stuff: Gin-Gins hard ginger candies, ginger ale (try it diluted), an occasional Coke (fountain works better than canned), cereal the minute i get up in the morning, then a more substantial breakfast with protein 1-2 hours later, eating every 2-3 hours, goldfish crackers, pretzels, avoiding very spicy foods, altoids, gum (not artificially sweetened), hard peppermints, fresh cool airBAD: spicy foods, skipping snacks, too much at one meal, riding in the car on curvy roads, over-exertion, warm stuffy rooms, most any smell...Some days though, I just have to write off as bad days, as occasionally NOTHING helps and I am running for the toilet in tears...

jennterrell | March 12 , 2008 3:51 PM

re: Q: Morning Sickness Tips?

I am in week 6 and have been constantly queezy for the last week. No vomitting, just nausea and sometimes mild heartburn. Ginger ale seems to help, but the only time I have felt completely naesea-free this last week is after I went to see U2 3D at the iMax. That lasted about 4 hours after the show, so I think I am going to start listening to music to see if it helps.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I am now 5 months pregnanct and I have been feeling alot better now for almost a month, so it does get better. When your feeling your worst, continue to drink alot of fluids, and eat what you can tolerate. Like crackers, toast, dry cereal. Don't try to eat spicy foods, fried foods or eggs. Stay away from dairy too! My doctor recommended Preggie pops or B6 vitamins. They didn't seem to help a whole lot but they may for you! Hang in there and it will be over soon!!!

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I'm 6 weeks now and have had morning sickness for the last 4 days. Saltines in the morning, and from there I only eat what sounds good. Ginger ale, ginger snaps, toast with peanut butter, bananas and sherbert (go figure). I worry I'm not getting enough nutrition as I usually have more fruits, veges & milk - but ighhhhh, they just make me feel worse...

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

Try something sour - I'm telling you it's a miracle worker. Sweet tarts are my medicine of choice right now, but sometimes Lifesavers are good enough too. I didn't eat dinner last night I felt so sick. If you get over saltines, try Wheat thins. They're heavier and have a little bit of sweetness, but enough of the dryness to keep everything down. And take your vitamin at night! Before you go to bed, pop the pill and you fall asleep before you even feel the effects. Yes, the morning's rough, but start working on your lifesavers!

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I'm almost through my 12th week and morning sickness has been just awful for me. It wasn't as bad at first, but thenI became extremely sick. i couldn't keep anything down, not even water, and I ended up losing 10 pounds within a few weeks. I'm only 116 pounds. I get so weak that if I stand up I almost pass out. I eat anything I can (if I crave it... I eat it!) and carry a water bottle with me at all times. There are some really good suggestions on here which I am now going to go try.

Havilah | October 24 , 2008 9:36 AM

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I had "all day sickness for about two weeks. Then last weekend it just got worse. I couldn't keep anything down. So, I went to the doctor. She perscribed a motion sickness pill that is safe for baby. Meclezine...it has saved my life. I can actually function and eat. Not that anything smells or sounds good. This is my new diet... Yogurt, 7-up, canned pears, fresh apples and grapes, PB&J, mac n cheese, Jamba Juice smoothies, gatorade, water, frozen gatorade, cheerios and lots of milk. You just have to find out what works. Good luck... i know this is awful if you are experiencing it.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

Has anyone heard anything about a sleep aid helping to curb morning sickness if taken the night before? My also-pregnant friend told me her doctor recommended it to her, but I am hesitant to try it, as it's a sleep aid.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I'm at 7 weeks and nothing is helping! Ginger ale seemed to help a bit the first couple of days, but now I just want to throw up when I drink it, when I eat I feel better for an hour if that and then I start to feel sick again. Saltines do NOTHING for me! I'm so frustrated because it's zapping what little energy I have. Has anyone tried the Sea-Bands? I'm tempted to try it.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I am six and a half weeks and for the past four days I have been MISERABLE. Morning sickness from the moment I open my eyes until I go to bed. Nothing is appealing to me and I am so frustrated. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I want NO part of it. I see the doctor on Monday and hopefully they will prescribe something for me because this constant nausea is so overwhelming and I didn't have any with my first baby....

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I am mid-eigth week and I have nausea all day. Cannot understand why it is called morning sickness. It is disgusting. I feel gross and I even wake up in the night because of it (when I am not up peeing). I cant stand the sight or smell of sweets or any kind of dessert. I am craving diet pepsi like mad but I am afraid of drinking it as I have read that it is not safe for the baby. I am trying to eat frequently but the only result is that I have gained weight...

I've only had the all nausea for 5 days now, every day it seems to get worse. Nothing sounds good (not that anything sounds bad either), and I have been forcing myself to snack on things. Hi ladies,May I recommend Ginger Ale. It has natural stomach soother, ginger, a nice fizz and less sugar than some suggested nausea relieving foods. My husband is a pilot and he recommended ginger to me as they use this to treat motion sickness. I love it and feel like it is a healthy solution to my constant queasiness.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

Im half thru week 6 as well, my m/s kicked in on my birthday 2 days ago! :( What seems to work so far is ginger ale, lootts of sleep and eating a cracker with peanut butter on it very frequently, any time I feel my mouth starting to water or the nauseousness coming on I eat one and it helps fill up my empty stomach, also the stickness of the peanut butter helps with the watery mouth. I changed my shifts at work also so I can sleep in because getting up early made it worse.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

We we're pregnant about four years ago and I was experiencing 24 hour moring sickness for roughly about three weeks until the doctor told me to take Emitrol. The only thing I hated about it was that you have to be able to get past the fact that it tastes like the cough syrup that you hated your parents giving you when you were little. Blah!! Then thankfully a friend had given me the best advice ever. Drink Lemonade. She mainly suggested it because she had learned that hospitals give Leukemia patients going through kemo lemonade to help them with the nausea and when I tried it worked. It may not work for all, and it may not work all the time, but it really helped and enabled me not to have to always take Emitrol and it taste way better.

mldubau19 | February 08 , 2009 8:55 PM

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

They also have flavored Emitrol, they have it in Lemon and Cherry which could taste better. I used Emitrol at night before bed and it did help me out alot.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

my M/S hits the hardest in the morning/early afternoon. I find eating as soon as I get up really helps, and than lots of smaller meals/snacks al day long. my "cures" so far have been : Reese peanut butter puffs cereal, pretzels, ginger ale, raisin toast, and peppermints. Im kinda starting to get sick of eating these same things all the time, so Im going to go and see if I can find Sea Bands today, and maybe they will work. Never letting my stomach get too full or too empty also helps, but can be hard since you dont feel like eating anything.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

update: i bought a set of wrist bands to help with motion sickness (I live in Canada, so i found them at my local CAA) They are fantastic! Now instead of feeling like im going to puke whenever I get hungry, I just feel hungry. They are a little uncomfortable, and kinda ugly, but they are working for me, so I will deal with it.

My husband wakes me up with a low-fat honey graham cracker on my pillow. Chicken broth helps for lunch. I have zero appetite (so weird for me!) but force myself to eat all day and it has helped. One plus- I've lost all the extra weight I gained after I miscarried (and got depressed) last year!

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

Does anyone else have dry heaves? I started getting them about a week ago when I would brush my teeth so I figured it was just my gag reflex over reacting. But now I start dry heaving in the middle of the day. I'm 10 weeks and I haven't been throwing up much, but the nausea definitely settled in a few weeks ago. I'm really hoping that week 12 is a magic week and that I start to feel better then. I'm losing weight simply because the thought of food (especially at night) makes me nauseated.

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I'm in my first trimester. I haven't gotten sick yet - I found out immediately that as long as you stay satisfied & don't get too hungry then I don't have a problem. I eat a small snack before I go to bed and I keep that snack (usually Life cereal) next to my bed in a baggie & eat as soon as I wake up before I even get out of bed. It works wonders! Really! I usually snack on small things like that throughout the day too. I also read somewheres that eating large meals makes you feel sicker too. So small frequent meals have been helping me alot.

BreanaJasmine | April 01 , 2009 9:09 AM

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

I found like one of the other ladies, as long as I ate small meals and something I liked it would curb the nausea. I drink plenty of ginger ale soda (warm) but the thought of anything sweet is out of the question. It has to be salty or have plenty of garlic. Mine started in 6 weeks of pregnacy. I hope it ends soon. Hope you all feel better soon!!!!

I am always so glad to come here and see others like me. I'm not glad you're all sick though. I just entered week seven and was starting to worry that I hadn't felt anything except being hungry all the time. Then this morning, I was driving for an hour to a work event and had to stop four times to vomit. UGH. It was the worst. I am going to stock up on everything you guys listed above. Question - does anyone know where to buy sea bands or preggy pops? Thanks!

Okay, so I told you all that I would let you know how the Happy Mornings Tea is working for me -- I might be crazy, but I definitely think it works! I've been using it for a few weeks and my stomach really feels "settled" after I drink it - yea! I've had very little morning sickness (so far) and I really think this could be why....it is a little expensive but I think it's worth it! Oh - and by the mesh tea ball that they offer with it (if you don't have one) since it is "loose tea"...Hope this helps you all! I don't know about you guys but I can't wait for my 2nd trimester! Ha!

re: Q: Morning sickness tips?

Look at your vitamin. Mine was a major culprit in my morning sickness. My midwife took me off the drug store kind (which she said was petrolium and chemicals) and got me a good combo of Organic food based vitamins. I took I got an iron free multi (also cleared up my constipation) with zinc. Fish oil, B 6 and 12, Calcium with Boron and Vitamin D. I take them in shifts and it's been a lot easier on my stomach. It's a little more work to take the vitamins with every meal but I am not nearly as nausaus. Just make sure to take the Calcium and D together.

I am six weeks pregnant with my first child! I am having a terrible time with nausea, no vomiting yet though. I have all day sickness and I feel terrible all day. My Dr. suggested the drug Phenergan. I am also a student nurse, so I did some research on the drug. Remember anything you take, baby takes also! I don't care if any Dr. says that its "SAFE". There are always side effects no matter what the drug. And no way to tell 100% because everyones body responds different. Just be careful what you and your growing baby take. I have decided against the drug. In my drug book Phenergan is categorized as a Category C Drug. The definition of that means either that Animal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate and well- controlled studies in pregnant women. OR No animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Either way there are no adequate and well- controlled studies in pregnant women. That to me does not sound like the drug is "SAFE". Just be careful for your baby! Do your own research!

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

My mother is an old-fashioned home economist. She gave me a very old, but not very well known home remedy for nauseau (not just morning sickness): Cola syrup... yup, straight Cola syrup. You can buy it in 2 or 4 oz. bottles at the local pharmacy. I find that they usually don't have many in stock because it's such an old remedy, so I buy every bottle I can find. But, I'm now 11 weeks pregnant and have been sipping Cola syrup over ice (following the instructions on the bottle) pretty much every morning and evening since about week 6. It helps IMMENSELY. The difference between the Cola syrup and regular soda pop like Sprite or Coke is the carbonation. The carbonation makes the nauseau worse (why they always say drink it flat when you have the flu). So, I just get rid of the carbonation all together and buy the straight syrup. I usually try to let the ice melt just a bit or it's a little too strong.

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I am going on 8 weeks with my second child & the all day sickness has been horrible!! Nothing is appealing but I know I am hungry. I have tried Coke Syrup, saltines, flat Coke, nothing helps. My docotr gace me a script for Zofran which is a really strong drug. I was uneasy about taking it ( I won't even take Tylenol) but I finally broke down & it helps tremendously. I don't take everyday but when I am going to work I need to be able to function & this helps. I know some people are against taking meds but why put yourself thru the agony of feeling horiible 24/7.

Lollipops! wow- saw that suggestion on here and what a difference it has made. I was actually able to eat breakfast and then lunch after sucking on one of Trader Joes organic pops. Maybe ill even get to eat dinner after one. I have been so queezy- the thought of food makes me want to barf. but the pops were really helpful today. co-workers thought i was crazy for eating one at 8am- but hey until they know im preg- ill just look like a sugar junkie!

i'm in the middle of my 6th week and just started getting intense "morning" sickness. the worst part is i'm a student so trying to go to morning classes...just isn't happening. saltines before getting out of bed did not work, only made things worse. i started drinking ginger ale in the morning, i look crazy for drinking soda at 8am but it seems to be working. hopefully i can eat some real food today!

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

NOTHING has worked for me! My doctor has even put me on a medication called diclectin but it has done nothing! Yesterday had to spend the afternoon in the ER for dehydration hooked up to saline bags. They say if i stay this sick i will have to keep going back! The nurse told me to live off of popcicles until i feel better. So far this has kind of worked. I went from getting sick 7 times a day to about 4. ! I just have to keep reminding myself that it's worth it!!

I keep ginger ale (room temp) and a box of dry ceral by the bed. If I can drink the ginger ale and eat a few pieces of dry ceral, then I can usual last through a shower and getting ready for work. Then I have a snack-belly bars are great. I've been sick for about three weeks now and it's all day long. I use to love the smell of coffee, but I can't even go into the work break room now. Best advice, stay away from any smell that will make you sick.

I'm now in my 8th week and still dealing with the "all-day" nausea. It really kicked in at about 6 weeks. I can't bear to look at another Saltine, so I've turned to Nilla wafers, lots of water, seabands (very stylish). I've also found taking my prenatal at night helps me in the am. My doctor suggested deep breathing exercises and tightening your abs on the inhale. Sounds strange, but it works for me. Oh, and lots of wintergreen gum to help with this sour taste! Yuck!

I was sick to my tummy multiple times a day for 9 months the only thing I could keep down was what I was craving during the moment. Listen to your body and eat only what sounds good to you at the time.

I found a trick that I wanted to pass on! I went to my local health food store and got crystalized ginger candy. I have one every few hours when I start to feel crummy and it has seemed to work so far. Also I've been eating every 2-3 hours (cheerios, pretzels with veggie dip, bagel.... carbing it up) to ward off any "sickness" feeling throughout the day

I had great luck with real-fruit juice popsicles. They provide hydration at a slow enough rate to prevent the nausea that always accompanies drinking a whole glass of anything for me.

I am 7 wks pregnant with my second child. I had no morning sickness with the first one - at all. Not true with this one. I have found that to stave off headaches and nausea, I eat every 2 hrs. I keep plain Sun Chips (I can't look at another saltine) around to ward off hunger & creeping nausea, and drink lots of water & very diluted juice. So far so good - I am starting to feel like my previously pregnant self!

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

This is my first pregnancy, so I'm by no means an expert on this matter, but I am a nurse, and after reading one person's comments, I felt the need to add my own. Everyone's pregnancy is different from the next, and while some people are able to tolerate their nausea, some require medication, which I'm not judging at all. However, you should know what you're putting into your body, and consider medications like Zofran, which is category B, versus Phenergan, which is category C (See these descriptions from Wiki: "Pregnancy Category B Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester. Pregnancy Category C Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks." ) This is information that is helpful to us all, but I just happen to be aware of it because of my job. I hope it helps, and hope everyone finds what works for them!

I am AMAZED at these Sea-Bands! They really work! This is my 7th pregnancy I am in wk 9 and have been absolutely miserable as I was w my previous pregnancies. My husband is a doctor and gave me Zofran after every other solution was exhausted just so I could function thru the day. All that did was make me constipated and I was still sick. Last p.m. I loaded the kids up and we went to Walgreens and got the Sea-Bands. I have been wearing them for 12 hrs and have not been the least bit nauseated! I am baffled! Usually in the a.m. I am running for the toilet, but this a.m., I was just hungry! Wow! Thanks to all of you who recommended them and God Bless You!

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

The things that sort of work for me are making sure that you do not let your stomach feel empty, although eating feels like a major chore already. Snack on small things throughout the day, things that you actually enjoy and not just tasteless saltines like some will tell you. Try not to drink while you are eating, and take small bites, chew carefully. When you do drink, don't use a straw and drink slowly as well. Ginger in your tea can help also. Good luck to you! I am right there with you.

I didn't get morning sickness until I was 11 weeks, but for the past 5 weeks since then I have been sick all day, everyday! Very romantic way to spend our babymoon! I have been working as much as I can but hopefully it will get better soon! Tried all solutions listed above, nothing works! Dry cereal worked for a couple of days but after that it came up too! GRRRR can't wait for it to pass! But yay, we're having a baby!

I am in my 7th week, but I have been nauseous non-stop since before I even knew I was pregnant at 5 weeks. I don't actually throw-up a lot, only two-three times per week, but the nausea is crazy. I eat small meals and snacks all day, even though I never feel hungry and I have had no relief. Where do you get the preggy pops? And what brand of Vitamin B-6 should I get - some have different amounts?

TeachVicky | October 24 , 2009 8:31 PM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

Preggy pops are available at Motherhood maternity stores. Check the malls around your area. I am 10 weeks, and I just got sick for the first time about an hour ago. I felt nauseous as usual, but it kept getting worse. I didn't vomit much (there wasn't much in my stomach, as I was just about to have some soup for dinner), but afterward I felt so much better. I'm just wondering if anyone had nausea for the whole time but didn't vomit until later. Anyone? With all the flus and stuff going around, I'm worried it could be something else (though I feel fine otherwise and I worry too much).

I'm in my 6th week and the "morning" sickness just hit me a few days ago. No vomiting yet but I feel nauseous all day. This is my first baby and this just hit me like a ton of bricks. I have completely lost my insatiable appetite I had the previous two weeks. I feel miserable right now :(

Eckowalski | November 05 , 2009 3:49 PM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I'm at 6 1/2 weeks and feel very nauseous in the mornings and some evenings. Different things help on different days so for me there is no one cure all. But this is what has helped: ice chips- I was starting to feel dehydrated from all the saltines and water wasn't sounding good, but the ice chips felt and tasted so good! Protein in the mornings helps me get going a lot faster than just saltines or I like oyster crackers because they make less of a mess. Sometimes just one or two almonds helps out enough to get me in the shower. Lately dairy has begun to sound good again- string cheese, yogurt, cold glass of milk. I also feel like I'm eating all the time- just not very much at a time. I can always feel when I need to eat a little something because I'll start to get nauseous. I tried the Preggie Pops and they didn't do too much for me. I think the best thing is to just mix it up and eat what sounds good- healthy or not- you can make up for it later! Good luck!

I was helped by Acupuncture. It didn't take it away entirely but it helped me get through. The acupuncture doctor also recommended eating fresh ginger, which tastes dreadful, but it did usually stock the urge to vomit.

My midwife told me to take half a unisom tablet. MAKE SURE It's tablet and not liquid gel and 50 mg of B6 vitamin. I had super severe morning sickness all day long at 3 weeks (yes before i even knew I was pregnant I had severe morning sickness) til 4.5 months! This kept me from barfing every 5 minutes!

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I am having a love/hate relationship with nausea right now! This is my first pregnancy so I am really nervous and really excited at the same time! I have been feeling like I have to throw up on and off throughout the day (which I hate!) but I have also been reading that sickness could be a sign that your body is producing all the hormones it needs to to keep the baby safe. Although I hate how I am feeling most of the time, I am happy that I am feeling something!

Is zofran safe during pregnancy? I'm allergic to phenergan, but zofran works...

samnchels913 | November 11 , 2009 2:34 AM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I was on zofran for something not related to being pregnant, but my doctor told me it was okay. I'm almost 18 weeks now and I've been nauseaous the whole time. It's been better for the past few weeks, but I've lost a lot of weight. I tried a lot of different things because the thought of saltines made everything worse. I went through phases, for awhile goldfish crackers worked, then pretzels, always sprite. Now I snack usually on fruit, but anything that I can eat. Preggie pops have saved me, I actually have the preggie pop drops and I end up having 3-4 a day, but usually as soon as I eat one the naseua goes away for awhile.

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I am at my 7th week and the nausea is killing me. I have no desire to eat anything. It doesn't help that my husband thinks that I need to be eating everything that the pregnancy books recommend. The prenatal vitamins are awful but taking them before I go to sleep seems to help. My mom says that she was very sick with me and my brother. I am just praying that this ends soon. Being sicks at Thanksgiving is not my idea of a happy holiday. The preggie Pops don't make me any better, but they are nice to have onhand.

I am in my 6th week and yes the nausea is a pain. It's all day. But I didn't realize that so many others are going through the same thing. I got my hubby to get me some sea bands this morning and I must say that it has worked miricles for me, within a 15 - 30 minute time span. I love it. My m/s was very unbearable since I was sick all day and couldn't eat anything, bearly could sip water. But again the Sea Bands do work. I would try it!

Mrsfudge77 | November 25 , 2009 8:41 AM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

My "morning" sickness has also been all day. I am 12 weeks and it seems to be getting better most days. I tried the sea bands and they worked for me for about a day and a half. My doctor suggested ginger root tablets, they sell them at vitamin stores. That has worked wonderfully and I've only had to take phenergan a couple times with them. Which is a good thing because phenergan knocks me out so I can only take them at night.

Kelly619 | November 29 , 2009 9:39 PM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

Here's what worked for me. To prevent nausea - eat something as soon as you get up, then break up your usual meals into smaller portions and graze every couple hours. Take your prenatal vitamins in the evening or at bedtime to minimize nausea and gagging. Once nausea strikes - I got a lot of relief from ginger chews (The Ginger People & Reed's are 2 brands I've found in health food stores, gourmet food stores, and even Target) which are easy to carry on you and take whenever the nausea hits. Biting/sucking on lemon wedges helped if they were handy, and I used to carry a small bottle of lemon essential oil in my purse to help with nausea related to smell aversion - taking a whiff would clear the smell from my nose, and a couple times I even dabbed it under my nose homicide detective style if I couldn't immediately get away from the smell. And of course there are the old standbys - saltines and coke slurpees. Good luck, this too shall pass!

UkieBabe | November 30 , 2009 12:09 PM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

Lemon drops helped me a lot the first time around. I've got a stash on hand this time around, just in case. Another thing, is always have something in your purse. I had occasions the first time around where I had to sit on the floor of a store, and find the first thing I could get my hands on to eat, because my blood sugar would drop so fast. It was awful. I've got my daughters FruitaBu's in my purse now so I am prepared this time around.

I'm a little over 10 weeks now & have had nausea SO badly! Virtually nothing sounds good to eat. :( Originally I had started getting up first thing in the morning and drinking a carnation instant breakfast...unfortunately, the last 3-4 mornings I have thrown them back up almost immediately. I really hope this subsides after I get into my 2nd trimester because I cannot take this feeling much longer. I am miserable :(

I had morning sickness all day and all night for the first trimester. then i got 3 weeks off before i was sick again. it got so bad that i had to take phenegren 1/2 pill 3x a day. i was also sucking on curiously strong ginger altoids. but really helped me the most was when i started craving milk my last trimester. i drank about a gallon of meadow gold lactose free milk every other day. between the three of them i was able to keep some foods down. i did however lose 25 lbs instead of gaining weight. i gained 40 after she was born.

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I am 7w 3d pregnant w/ my first. I started getting sick at 5w 2d. I was nauseous all day and kept throwing up morning, aftrenoon and night. I weighed 123 before I got pregnant and now weigh 113:( BUT, Yesterday and today have been great days! My husband is a pharmacist and suggested taking two Ginger capsules and two B6 tablets every morning and then my midwife wrote me a rx for Zofran. And I am wearing Sea Bands. With all this I feel SO much better! Not perfect and still have to be careful with what I eat...but all this has definitely helped! I didnt throw up yesterday or today:) Also, I know you have all heard this and are probably sick of hearing it, but dont let your stomach get empty. I am sick of Saltine crackers and have moved onto dry cereal and pretzels! I even snacked during church and while I grocery shop. It really helps! Just try it. (I also have been cursed w/ a rare symptom of excess amounts of saliva. Which is the worse part for me to be honest! I was having to spit like 4 and 5 times eveey 6o seconds. It was AWFUL!! But, my midwife also wrote me a rx for Transderm Scop. Which is a patch to help fight motion sickness. One of its side affects are dry mouth. It has also helped TONS!) I hope this helps someone:)

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I have been prescribed Phenegren and Zofran because I've been getting sick so often. The weekends would still be pretty tough, I think because I was sleeping in and being pretty lazy the whole time. I've started waking up in the middle of the night to take my meds and eat a little snack, that way the food and nausea meds stay in my system 24/7. It's been helping me be able to eat all day, although I'm a bit more sleepy since I don't sleep straight through the night, but I guess that's better than not being able to eat. Plus, gotta get used to waking up in the middle of the night anyways...

LisaV03 | December 30 , 2009 8:38 AM

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I started out with what I figured was typical "morning sickness" which quickly turned into me not being able to keep anything down, including water. So I wound up calling my doctor after a week of puking my guts up multiple times a day (not such a Merry Christmas for me this year). My doctor said I was suffering from hyperemisis which is an uncommon condition and called in a prescrition for Vitamin B-6 for me. When that didn't help I reluctantly decided to go to the emergency room. They put me on IV fluids to help with the dehydration and gave me Zofran to stop the nausea, then sent me home. I'm still taking the Zofran and Vitamin B-6 3xs a day and it has helped tremendously. I'm still nauseous, but at least I'm able to keep food and fluids down. Trust me when I tell you that I hope none of you have to experience what I did. Ironically as uncommon as this condition is, my husband's cousin had it with both of her pregnancies which lasted the entire time. So right now I'm praying that I can get through the next month and that it will let up in my 2nd trimester. Good luck to everyone!

I was hesitant to get the morning sickness bands because of the price - but that was the best $11 I have ever spent. Things that also have worked for me are sweet fruits (oranges, berries), ginger ale (has to be "real" ginger) and apple juice. I still get sick right when I get up in the morning (probably because I haven't put the bands on yet) but I can get through the day with the other things.

Q&A: Morning sickness tips?

I'm a little over 7 weeks and have been having all day long sickness for over 2 weeks. It's gotten much worse this week. I've only vomited once, but I'm nauseated all day long. For awhile just eating small meals throughout the day was working. Now I can't eat much of anything but yogurt and cheese quesadillas. I suppose I don't have to worry about my calcium intake! I tried the motion sickness bands but they didn't work at all. Not worth the $10 for me. The other thing that's working for me is eating anything I crave when I crave it, no matter how odd it sounds. I ate a bunch of nacho tortilla chips today I was craving and my stomach totally settled. Who knows why but I'm so glad I bought them when they appealed to me. Yesterday I was craving vegetable soup and I was so glad to get some vegetables into my system. Your body knows what it needs and will tell you how to get it, I guess. As much as I'm hating my body right now, I'm more in touch with it than ever.

I'm in my sixth week, and have had a hard time with morning sickness. I've found that if I eat at least every hour, I'm better (and that probably explains why I'm most sick in the morning and at night). A lifesaver for me has been Reed's ginger candy (I like the chewy candies, but they also come in hard candies, which might be more appealing). My mom swore by saltines, but I think I'm going to try gingersnaps--in any case, they sound really yummy! Has anyone else been both sick to your stomach and hungry at the same time? Zophran. absolutely none of the other tips did anything for me. I was puking multiple times a day everyday without fail for months. Zophran is a blue prescription pill that you take that dissolves in your mouth so you don't have to worry about throwing it up. My doctor told me that it's what doctors prescribe to kemo paitients who can't keep anything down. For me it was a God send. It's really expensive without insurance.
