Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

I just found out I’m pregnant, and I’m actually losing weight. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Re: I just found out I’m pregnant, and I’m actually losing weight. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

The Bump Expert

It certainly seems strange to lose weight when you’re creating a whole new person, but it’s probably nothing to fret about. Morning sickness and the accompanying loss of appetite can cause you to shed a few pounds in the first trimester. Don't worry -- you'll more than make up for this loss in the upcoming months. And remember, most women only gain between two and five pounds in the first trimester.

Still, you can (and should) take action to ensure you and baby get the nutrients you need. Prenatal vitamins are the way to go,though you might want to try one with a low dose of iron (the mineral can actually make nausea worse). And, try to eat whenever you can stand it.An empty stomach can actually trigger nausea, as can low blood sugar,so eat before you are hungry and always keep snacks nearby. Getting extra sleep and cutting down the stress will also work wonders for your appetite.

For an alternative remedy, try ginger. (Ginger ale, ginger candies, ginger beef with snow peas…) It has a long history of making tummies feel better. Or slip on an acupressure band, found at most drugstores. The bands -- meant to ward off seasickness --help many a mom fight the queasies. If you continue to lose weight or simply can’t keep anything down, talk with your doctor.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I have lost over 5 pounds since I found out I was pregnant. I asked my doctor and she said it was okay in the first trimester, but obviously this shouldn't continue to happen. Mine is mainly because any food I look at makes me sick. Everyone keeps telling me it gets better in teh second trimester so I am anxiously awaiting being able to eat again.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

Peppermint helped me tremendously my first pregnancy - those little round, red-and-white swirly peppermint candies are convenient, and always helped me get over my total food aversion that first trimester. Peppermint tea is also good after a meal, and can help with keeping it down (and can help relieve/prevent heartburn and indigestion after meals, too).

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I am in my 6th week, almost 7 and am nautious all the time. I eat mostly carbs because they are the most "soothing', and I actually thought I gained so much weight, but after weighing myself this morning, I haven't. I go for bread and Saltines when really nautious. I will say, though, that the vomiting has not kicked in yet.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I am in my 7th week now, and when I first found out I was pregnant, I said "Ok, better weigh myself now, this is the littleist I will be.." and I have lost about 5 pounds. The wierd thing is, I eat.. A LOT! I have to eat like every 2 hours or I get very nauseous. I have to say, though, that I don't eat a lot at one sitting, but I eat very often throughout the day.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I have been bloated like a big Macy's Thanksgiving Parade balloon! I've had to cut down my salt. I have no appetite, but also no morning sickness. So no, no weight loss here!

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I have lost 8 pounds since I found out I was pregnant! I do feel like I am eating all the time, but the morning sickness and vomiting must be working. Hopefully it will stop soon as I am about to enter my second trimester.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I'm so nauseated all day long. I eat anything that I can stand to look at. Mostly carbs, I have lost about 2 pounds but had put on a bout 6 before even finding out I was pregnant. Peppermint tea kinda of helps but small things every couple of hours. I'm surviving on soup. Not good for me or baby but I can stomach it.

re: Q: Losing Weight?

I'm sick all the time, but when I do feel good I eat as much as possible and I've still lost 10lbs!

re: Q: Losing weight?

I am in my second trimester now and have continued to lose weight. At this week's checkup (15 wks), my doctor instructed me to take in an extra 700 calories a day through Ensure drinks. She also upped my zofran prescription. If I haven't gained weight in two weeks, or if I continue to barf like I have (losing A LOT of bile on regular basis), we have to consider more drastic measures (I was only 118 pounds with a low BMI when I got pregnant). This is scary because I am already high-risk due to severe chronic asthma.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I am 23 weeks and have lost a total of 18 pounds and I have had no morning sickness what so ever. The Dr. seems to think that due to the fact that we gained so much weight trying to get pregnant (fertility drugs = 42+ pounds gained in 11 months) that this is just that weight leaving now that the drugs are no longer in my body. Also know, I have known many women who are over weight and while pregant they have lost weight. Most of them say it is because they are taking care of them selfs ( many for the first time), but they are now watching what they eat and excersizing. If your Dr. isn't worried... enjoy the lose!

re: Q: Losing weight?

I'm am 4 weeks, 3 days. I've recently lost 30 lbs and hoped to lose another 65. Obviously that's not going to happen. I'm hoping that I can safely lose a few more pounds while the baby is growing. I have Insulin Resistance, a precursor to Diabetes. So, losing fat would help prevent complications. IHowever, I've been eating so well and I've been craving fried foods the last couple of days. I think that means I need to start taking Omega 3 supplements. My body probably needs that.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I am 21 weeks and had to change my diet in the first trimester due to gestational diabetes. I have lost 14 pounds during my pregnancy and my doctor said that as long as I am eating right then there is nothing to worry about. He said that all the nutrition is going straight to the baby. So I agree with NCTheatregirl , as long as your Dr. is not worried enjoy losing the weight and your pregnancy.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I didn't gain an ounce while I was pregnant, I actually lost 14 lbs.!! My Dr. was not concerned whatsoever, as u/s after u/s showed she was more than healthy weight (ended up 7lbs. 10oz.). My Dr. said if it wasn't for me being pregnant, I would have weighed less, of which was true, after I gave birth, I lost another 23lbs of fluid and baby ofcourse! ;)Do what's smart, what's healthy, and if you and baby are ok, and Dr. is not worried, then don't read into it too much on what you "should" be doing.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I am 5'9'' and weighed 124 when I got pregnant...already under weight. I now weigh 115. I have not been this thin since I was 14 and about 3 inches shorter. The doctor said I would make up for it later...but its hard to believe that I am growing a baby in there and weighing less than ever.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I have no idea what all of you are talking about. I have GAINED 10 lbs since I got pregnant! (I am almost 7 weeks) The Dr said it was because of all of the fluids I am retaining. He said to drink more water. I don't think I can drink any more water than I already do... I already drink between 40 and 100 oz a day!

re: Q: Losing weight?

I have been really sick the last 4 days, with M/S and cold flu, I am 7 weeks, lost only 2 lbs so far, but that is because i couldnt keep anything down. I am now on dliectin, and i feel so much better, i am hoping that my appetite starts to come back but until then i have started drinking hot chocolate so that i can get some calories from that and hopefully not loose too much more.

re: Q: Losing weight?

I was overweight anyway so the few pounds I am losing now in the first trimester are just an added bonus! I've been just nauseous enough to not be ravenously hungry, but no morning sickness yet. who knew pregnancy could be a weight LOSS aid???!! I know, I know--I'll more than make up for it soon, but if could start out with a 10 pound loss, then the 20 pounds I gain I won't look so bad, right?

gotchagomo | April 07 , 2009 8:13 PM

re: Q: Losing weight?

I am now 13 weeks and have lost a total of 10 lbs. I've been so sick for at least the past 2 months now. Every day I'm throwing up that nasty stomach acid. I have no desire to look at food or smell food, let alone eat it. The only time I ever can keep water or food down is after about 5 pm, which is hard cause then I eat/drink all at once then sleep on it. I can't wait for the day to come that I actually start to crave food! Hopefully this will come soon now that I'm starting 2nd trimester.

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

I just found out I am pregnant, so 5 weeks. I've lost almost 5 lbs. in the last month. One wierd thing though, since I found out I am actually pregnant, I've been hungry all the time. Audible growling of my stomach! This has got to be a psychological symptom, right? (I am trying to eat small meals each time I'm hungry; I don't want to accidentally starve my baby!)

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

Im on my 12th week and Ive lost 10 pounds, Im concerned because i previously had gastric bypass its hard enough for me to eat. I get so much nausea with the baby that everything i eat makes me feel awful. How much weight loss is to much? And is my baby still getting enough nutrients to grow healthy? I also feel weaker? could I be developing anemia?

itsnotcassandra | October 23 , 2009 9:48 AM

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

This is my 7th week of pregnancy and am down about six pounds. It is hard to know how accurate that is as my weight was affected by all the fertility drugs before I got pregnant. A couple of weeks ago I felt like I was retaining a lot of water and my doctor mentioned that she could see it on the ultrasound. She suggested switching to drinks with electrolytes. I now drink Smart Water (which is just water and electrolytes) and I feel a lot less bloated.

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

I am in my 6th week and always queezy, but havnt actually thrown up yet. I keep waiting for it. Yesterday I went into the garage and saw a dead mouse on the ground and I thought it was all over, I was so nauseaus for a few hours, and it wouldnt go away until I ate a bagel. So I've started to notice that carbs are the only thing that calms down my stomach.

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

Right now my favorite thing to ingest is lemonade or cherry limeade. I can hardly eat and even oyster crackers are less than appealing. I really wish that this was feeling better, but instead is a constant. Ugh! As if a flu-like feeling 24 hours a day isn't bad enough, my breasts are major pains themselves. Pregnancy is hard!! :)

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

I am 9 weeks pregnant with number 3!! I have lost 6 lbs since we found out, but this is not abnormal for me b/c i lost 15 with my first preg & 10 with my second....this darn morning sickness!!! Lol. But the good thing is i usally only gain 18-21 pounds total in my pregnacy so thats an added bonus, when it has to come off at the end :) Amen to carbs b/c thats the only thing that ever sounds good to me!! All the wonderful blessings to being pregnant, but so WORTH every minute!!!

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

Its relieving to know why I have been so nauseous all the time. I can be starving to the point my stomach is growling but am so nauseous i don't think i can hold anything down. I had noticed that if i ate before i got nauseous that it helped some. I also am in my 6th week going on 7th. I have yet to actually throw up but nice to know other moms are going through the same thing.

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

Up until about week 12 I couldn't eat anything substantial until dinner time and even then it was barely anything. I ended up losing about 20 pounds. Ginger and peppermint didn't work but multi-grain cheerios (which have tons of vitamins and minerals, including folate) helped a little. I'd just munch on them all day long... Now I'm in week 15 and am enjoying eating again! It'll pass, I promise.

Q&A: Losing weight during pregnancy?

I am 17 weeks, and I've lost about 20 pounds so far. I'm not trying to lose weight, but pregnancy has cut my appetite in half. Plus, my cravings are for really healthy foods - fresh fruits and veggies, lean dairy, etc. My doctor isn't concerned, because the baby is measuring normally, and I'm quite honestly enjoying it. Although I realize I will probably end up gaining some weight before this is all over.
