Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

Re: Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

The Bump Expert

The jury is out on whether caffeine can actually hurt your fetus, but most health-care professionals do recommend limiting intake. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it pulls fluids and calcium from both you and baby and will keep you running to the bathroom. (As if you aren't peeing enough already.) Also, caffeine has no nutritional value and can affect your mood, sleep schedule and iron absorption. And it’s not just the coffee -- remember, caffeine is also found in most teas, soft drinks and chocolates. Play it safe by totally eliminating caffeine, but If you simply can’t kick the habit, at least cut back. Some studies show that excessive caffeine consumption (more than 200 mg or one to two 8-ounce cups a day) can increase chances of miscarriage or premature birth.

Going cold turkey can be tough, so try lowering your caffeine intake gradually. If you’re a coffee drinker, work your way down to half-caf before becoming a full-fledged decaf drinker. Exercise and frequent small meals (good ideas whether or not you're kicking a habit) will help keep up your energy during the withdrawal. If you just like to have a tasty drink on your desk, try mixing fruit juice with sparkling water instead, or customize decaffeinated tea by adding cinnamon, cloves or bits of your favorite fruit. Though herbal teas usually don't have caffeine, run the ingredient list by your doctor first -- some may not be safe for baby.

re: Q: Is Caffeine Okay?

I don't drink coffee, but I have to have my chocolate. Do you think it's okay to have a small amount or just cut it out completely?

ktmiles |

re: Q: Is Caffeine Okay?

My doctor says that caffeine is okay in limited amounts. You don't have to cut it out completely. It's just that too much can be damaging. (You can have your chocolate-just not all the time)

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

What types of herbal teas are safe to drink?

cherylseymour@candw.ky |

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Make your own decaf tea by boiling water, let it cool a little, then pour the water over the leaves (enough to cover), let sit for one minute, then discard the water. Add more water and steep to make your cup, and you may drink that. The caffeine comes out of the tea within the first 30-45 seconds.

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

OMG I MISS MY COFFEE! i was definitely sure to kick my coffee drinking though. My dad would have a cup made for me every morning before school. But when i found out i was pregnant i totally stopped drinking it. I also LOVE Mt. Dew. I drink it all the time. but now whenever i get it i buy it caffeine free. The only time i drink caffeine is when we go out to eat or at school when i drink tea for lunch. =D

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

The main problem with caffeine is that it is a vasoconstrictor- that means it closes up your blood vessels, which means that it squeezes off bloodflow to your baby/placenta! Not a good thing... kind of like trying to breathe through a straw, you still get oxygen but after a few seconds it doesn't feel good and you think you're suffocating. Again as I always say--- ANYTHING IN MODERATION--- we have enough to worry about during pregnancy don't stress yourself out about an occasional soda, subway sandwich, or sushi roll! Stress is way worse for your baby!

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

thats BS I have had chocolate and caffeine through my whole pregnancy and I am full turm.

babycarder1 |

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

I used to work in a teratogen research lab primarily for FAS, but also other teratogens like caffeine. That's right... caffeine is considered a teratogen because it crosses the placenta and can cause detrimental neuropschological effects (that is, if you haven't miscarried already). It primarily causes developmental motor delays. Too much caffeine can also cause infants to be overly fussy, especially during feeding. Do yourself and your baby a favor, don't drink caffeine at all if you can help it, or if you think you are just too addicted to resist it, stop and ask yourself if it's really worth it. Hopefully, you'll know the answer. True that 1 or 2 caffeinated drinks here and there won't do much damage, but if you're consuming them everyday, it's time to rethink some things. I hope this helps clear a few things up because there isn't a lot of media attention around caffeine yet, but I'm sure there will be in the near future. Unfortunately, the damage may already be done by then.

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Everyone needs to lighten up, it true that it is probably best to eliminate caffeine, its probably also best to not have anything fried or with butter etc... but come on seriously having a cup a day is fine. I know several mothers who drank a cup of coffee throughout their pregnancy and gave birth to happy, healthy babies who in turn became intellegent successful adults. Thats being said, don't go overboard.

I love my coffee. I took 2 PT and got 2 BFN. So I drank mountain dew, coffee, tea and Dr. pepper. To my surprise I am pregnant! Eeeek. Testing on day 10 and 12 is too early. I just saw the Dr. and I am almost 6 weeks pregnant! No more caffeine for me!

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

my doctor said one or two cups of coffee a day is fine, and she has one of the best reputations of any of the ob/gyns in the area; I think it's irresponsible in fact to scare the crap out of pregnant women that allow themselves this one perfectly fine luxury (in moderation) just b/c you opt to go cold turkey.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

The jury is not out. You are not supposed to have any more caffeine than about 2 8oz cups of regular coffee. More than that has been proven to increase miscarriage risk. I never liked coffee but was a big tea drinker. I've switched to decaf, but still have chocolate from time to time.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

This is my thrid pregnancy and I had no caffeine during the first two pregnancies. I plan to do the same this time. My two children are excellent sleepers and I swear it to be because of the no caffeinne. The both slept through the night by the third week. Although legal, caffeine is a drug and the baby would need to go through detox. Just like when I stop having caffeine I feel a bit cranky so would the baby once he/she is born. It may sound funny, but to me it was worth it. Give your son to be little one the best possible advantages and sip on some water or caffeine free!

PorterMcCauley |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine drains your body of Iron. This is why older people who have been avid caffeine drinkers in their younger days are also more pron to osteoporosis. You are putting your child at risk for sure by drinking caffeine especially in the first trimester while the bones are developing. Many women drink caffeine all through their pregnancy and say their baby is fine but what they don't realize is that their child has a higher risk of SIDS. Do your research for sure if you are going to drink caffeine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I want a Coke sooooooo bad!!! I used to drink one EVERY day before getting pregnant, but I completely gave it up just to be safe. Even though the jury may/ may not be out still on that verdict, there was a point too where it was thought that it was okay for women to smoke and drink while they were pregnant .

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I've read that you can have about 200 mg a day safely. That's two small cups of coffee (not the kind of cups that most of drink). So I gave up coffee before we stopped using birth control because I didn't want caffeine withdrawals. Starbucks coffee though, for instance is hyper-caffeinated, so it also depends on the type and strength of coffee. I have terrible morning sickness though and coffee (of all things) is smelling really good! So I might have to have a little. The jury is definitely still out, but since it just has the potential to be harmful... I think most people just automatically rule it out.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My ob says moderation is the key to everything. I am a coke aholic and I drank a few a week with my son. He is perfectly healthy and was a great sleeper from the beginning. That doesn't mean of course that some people might not have issues with it but I think it's better to give into a craving now and then than to deal with the stress of denying yourself.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I believe it is more what what you feel is right for you and the baby. When my mom had me over twenty years ago the doctor told her to drink more that three cups of coffee a day because of her headaces. When she had my brother only four years later a different doctor told her to not drink more than four cups a day. A family friend of mine is a RN and told me to not have more than a cup a day but my doctor told me my first visit to go cold turkey and cut out any means of caffine. It should be what you feel is best for you and your baby not an educated guess, because no two doctors are going to say the same thing. If you feel caffine is fine then don't cut it out, but if it worries you then gradually work yourself to not consuming any.

DuckyBear |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor said I don't have to cut caffeine out 100%. She's more worried about the sugar than anything. But, if you're like me and you're addicted to Pepsi (or coke etc), just try caffeine free soda. Most don't taste that much different than the original caffeine-filled sodas. That;s how I got through my first pregnancy and am getting through my second.

I was told by my Dr. One cup a day is not bad, she also gave me options 1. One cup 2. Mix half decaf and half regular 3. Decaf all the way 4. No latte's or anything with added sugars (goodbye vanilla lattes!, Mocha's and Carmel Latte's, etc.!)

For those of you wondering about chocolate, according to "Pregnancy for Dummies," the "average-sized chocolate bar or cup of hot cocoa has around 6 mg of caffeine". Also, according to Nutritiondata.com a snicker's bar has 4.6 mg of caffeine. So basically you would need to eat a lot of chocolate to cause any problems. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/sweets/5461/2

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I didn't cahnge a thing about what I ate or drank when I was pregnant. I mean of course I didnt drink alcohol or anything (I was only 18 anyway) but as far as soda, a little coffee (I never drank much anyway), and junk foods, it all stayed the same. And my baby was prefectly healthy. The only think I really changed was not eating my steaks medium rare. To this day my baby (now 5 months) has never had any illnesses at all.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I used to drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day and a Diet Pepsi. My doctor told me it was alright to drink a cup a day, but to cut out the rest of the caffiene. I am prone to migraine headaches, so my doctor said not to cold turkey. So, I only have 1 cup of coffee a day.

Mirage222 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Everything is fine in moderation. I'm a coffee hound and I've had two babies and am on my third pregnancy now. Cutting your morning coffee can be tough. Especially the first week with headaches , short temp and the sleepiness especially when you're in your first trimester. The easiest way I've learned to deal with this is to make your morning coffee with half decaf and half regular coffee grounds this way you're cutting the caffeine but your body doesn't recognize it as much. Also, cut out the McCafe and Starbucks. Even the decaf espressos from those two places have as much or more caffeine in them as regular drip coffee from home.

Corwin79 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Almost everything you like with caffeine can be consumed in a decaffeinated version. It can be hard if your body is really used to having the caffeine, but taking it down gradually is better than not taking it down at all.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

From past experience, it's not a bad idea to cut back when you are further along anyhow because the baby starts kicking your insides like crazy because they can't sleep ;) Me and my husband are trying to get pregnant and it's frustrating because I work for a beverage company that sells energy drinks and I can't drink my moster lo-carb out of fear I might affect conceiving or the baby when I become pregnant. A full throttle energy drinks has over 3,000mg of caffiene containing ingredients :(

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Ya know how when crack addicts get pregnant? and then their babies come out addicted to crack? My doctor says that it is similar (though less severe) with caffeine and other foods. She said that one of her patients drank coffee every day during pregnancy and breast feeding. Her baby couldn't stop crying when it was born because of caffeine withdrawal. Dr. told her to cut out the coffee, 3 weeks later, baby stopped crying. Same thing with a patient who craved nothing but Taco Bell for the whole 3rd trimester, baby came out with heartburn. She said that what we should eat during pregnancy should reflect what we want our baby to crave. :D

IMHO, prudence never hurt anyone. I'm very very glad that the mommies who consumed caffeine didn't experience any problems, but that doesn't mean that no one will. And it never hurts to "behave as though"...as in behaving as though caffeine were harmful. For me...I just find other things to drink and sit tight with the knowledge that on the way out there chance that it could hurt my lil peanut...I'm safe! :) Good luck, Mommies!

I miscarried at 10 weeks and while I don't think caffeine is generally harmful if within the boundaries set by your OB and the health profession, I'm not planning on taking any chances the next time we get pregnant, so I'm shooting for total abstaination. Here's hoping it helps. :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My OBGYN said NO caffiene......are they crazy? I was drinking 1 bottle frappachino a day, so I stopped that. I recently gave up though. If I want a bit of chocolate, I'm going for it. I don't drink pepsi, but that is one of the things that helps with my naseau, so I'm going to drink that. My mom drank coke while she was pregnant with both me and my brother and we're fine. I've also just read that eating sushi is fine to, in fact it is encouraged as a part of essential prenatal health in Japan. From what I've read, you stay away from the high mercury fish wether raw or cooked, and you steer clear of oysters etc. But, as far as say raw sushi salmon....A ok as long as it is fresh and in moderation. By fresh, doesn't smell! So, I'm doing that too. My advice is do research and include other countries in your research.

With my first, i didn't find out i was pregnant until i was 4 months along. By then i had consumed numerous Dr Pepper's. I was very worried! My son was bon healthy, he slept thru the night by the age of 1 month, and wasn't at all overly fussy. I think everyone's pregnancy and turnout is different and dependant upon soooo many factors other than solely caffeine intake. Just make general healthy choices.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Sprite and Root beer don't have caffeine, but you have to watch out for the high levels of sugar. Iced tea does has caffeine, but lemonade doesn't. Herbal tea's haven't been researched enough in conjunction with pregnancy. I was recommended to avoid herbal tea and just drink decaf black tea, I'm a huge tea drinking fan... so it took a while to get used to.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Several doctors I've talked to say a pop-a-day isn't going to hurt anything. To be on the safe side, I don't drink that much, but a pop now and then or a little chocolate is not harmful to the baby, so relax, and just "eat smart for the most part".

arwenE83 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor actually told me that 3-4 cups of caffeine per week is safe. She said that they found that any more than that leads to a 50% miscarriage rate in the first trimester. Not sure what the scientific proof is on this, it's just what I was told.

Emmasmom04 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

This has been so hard for me. I had no idea how dependent my body was on caffeine until I stopped drinking coffee and tea. I didn't have that many drinks before, a cup of coffee or a larger iced coffee in the morning and a cup of tea in the earlier evening, and I was never much of a soda drinker, but I missed them hard. I cut out all liquid caffeine, and I just have chocolate every now and then now. I just didn't want to be trying to go off coffee once the baby is born and I am all sleep deprived. But I miss coffee every day. I don't go near coffee shops, and if someone is grinding beans in the grocery store I want to rub them all over my face. I should carry an ultrasound pic around with me to look at when I get coffee-sad.

mctrudy |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

NO! Even small amounts of caffeine have been PROVEN to reach the fetus. The affects are that the neurotransmitters that are forming new neuropathways in your baby's brain overfire their destination, just like alcohol causes them to underfire (never reaching) their destination. Quit being selfish! It's only 9 months, you'll survive without it!

Ocassionally it will be fine. This is my second pregnancy and my first child turned out completely healthy, bright, and happy. Like with my first pregnancy, I have been drinking 1cup of 1/2 cafe once in a while (about every other day). On the other days I drink one cup of decaf (out of habit). I'm sure most docotors would agree that this is more than moderate. My OB told me I could have one full strength a day and be fine. The only reason I still drink the 1/2 cafe is because the prenatal vitamins really bind me up (= No Poop)! The coffee helps with that!

My father is an OB -- and the person I always go to when I have questions. As I have read above, he also says to limit your caffeine intake to 2 cups a day. I am a coffee addict so had coffee during my entire first pregnancy, and my 6-year-old daughter has scored the highest in her grade level on intelligence tests, so these doctors DO know what they are talking about (no brain damage here). Remember, decaffeinated coffee isn't completely caffeine free, so don't go overboard.

The amount of caffeine in an entire BAR of chocolate equates to about 9mg, a cup of regular coffee has about 60 (at least) I see no reason why not to indulge, as long as you're not eating 10 chocolate bars a day. Dark chocolate though, as more, about 30 mg. It's all about moderation.

I am reading the book "Skinny Bitch, Bun in the Oven" and the authors in this book seriously discourage the use of Caffeine during pregnancy, It is a diuretic and it can raise blood pressure. Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I say side in the error of caution, especially in the first trimester where you're likely to have a miscarrage. Towards the end you can always do decaf. Caffeine can dehydrate your body, and I'm person who needs to me reminded to drink more water. Drinking orange juice can help with a sugar boost in the morning, or a flavored steamer at Starbucks. Which is just steamed milk with your favorite flavor.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Hee hee, in my humble, crunchy opinion, if you're going to have coffee or tea, go decaf. You're drinking coffee because you like the taste in the first place, right? Not because you're an addict? So that's an easy switch. Soda is deficient of any helpful nutrients, and just takes up space that you could be filling with more nutritious foods and drinks. Not only that, but artificial sweetners, flavors, and colors are all starting to be studied more and more for their negative effects on kids and adults. Artificial colors (like those found in Moutain Dew specifically) are linked to ADD in kids. So who knows what it's doing to your baby. So I'd steer clear of any soda. It's just empty calories that leaches calcium from your body, and from your baby. So why do it?

skearhart4 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

It's interesting the way people can give answers in such an absolute, nazi-like fashion. I'm glad that I have a mind of my own and have read up on this, as well as talking with people who did/didn't drink coffee during their pregnancy. The folks who try to scare people into thinking they are going to have a miscarriage if they drink a cup of coffee in the morning should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, you need to seriously cut back on caffeine, sodas, sugar, etc. while you are pregnant - simply to be the healthiest you can be for yourself and your baby. But your baby isn't going to become a caffeine addict if you have a cup of coffee! I am a bit of a chocoholic and if I want chocolate, I'm going to have it! I also eat a healthy diet, take my vitamins and get my exercise. Just be a healthy, happy person - that's the best you can do for your baby. And have your dang cup of coffee if you need it! You are not a bad mother.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My OB told me when I was pregnant with my 4 year old that caffiene, like anything else, is ok in moderation. I used to be a hardcore 4-5 pepsi a day drinker... and so I get headaches if I don't get caffeine fairly regularly. Since then, I cut WAY back to only drinking one a day, sometimes less. I try to lmit myself to one a week... but sometimes I just have that craving (like right now). Caffeine does deplete the body of fluids, so as long as you're drinking a bunch of water (half your body weight per day is recommended) then a little soda or coffee here and there won't hurt.

The internet has essentially scared pregnant women silly into thinking that practically everything they consume will harm their baby. You really need to take a lot of things said with a grain of salt. Obviously if you have a history, you need to take extra precautions but I do not think that it warrants the kind of worry created but all of these claims. Pregnancy is a time that should be as stress free as possible and reading all of these studies and articles only contributes to such stress.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Moderate amounts will not harm the baby, however, if you're the sort of person who normally considers a redbull or pot of coffee to be a good meal replacement you may want to restructure your diet.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I have been suffering from extreme migraines that last up to three days. After talking to my doctor and several friends of mine that are nurses, they suggested a small amount of coffee to help with the pain. It's better than being on narcotics throughout my pregnancy like some doctors suggest. Coffee is a natural anti-oxident, everything in moderation. I think that some mothers are just paraniod about everything, go with your intuition and what your body tells you.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

coke is the only thing that keeps my stomach settled in the morning and the headaches at bay- I've had three miscarriages and no babies - but it's cruel and irresponsible to suggest that drinking a cup of soda (or coffee, if you prefer) is to blame. everything in moderation and faith is the only way I keep going - and this fourth time is no different.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was a caffeine junkie prior to being pregnant. I was 100% sure that there was no way I was going to be able to give up my morning coffee, but by week 7 (when the nausea started to set in) I lost all desire for it! I would rather be tired than have my stomach churning all day. I have limited myself to 1 diet coke in the afternoon, and I'm happier for it!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I LOVE coffee, but I've always just limit it to one cup in the morning, No more. When I found out I was pregnant I gave it up completely. I suffered pretty bad headaches at first but those went away. However, yesterday morning I gave in...I had half a cup of coffee and the results were SOOOO good. It helped the naseua and REALLY helped me not feel starving all day. The little boost of energy didn't hurt either. From now on I'm having my 1/2 cup in the morning. I recommed to try to limit to just 1 cup a day for pregnant women with doctors ok of course.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

There is a comment from a year or so ago that states that caffeine is a vasconstrictor- just to clarify for those of you that may not know, it is NOT. It is a vasodilator. I have definitely cut back on caffeine consumption, but if I want something, I am not denying myself (everything in moderation). Also, if you are hesitant to take acetaminophen for a headache, but just can't handle it- have a bit of soda or some caffeinated tea. Since caffeine is a vasodiator (it's in most OTC headache medicine), it will help those constricting blood vessels that are causing your headache. :))) Hope this helps!

to me caffeine is like anyother drug! I always quit drinking soda, and tea during pregnancy! babies can be born with a caffeine dependency, and like alcohol do one really know how much makes this happen! Why take the chance, Ialso cut out fish with iodine, get my meat well done, anddont eat sugar sbstitutes! Good luck with the choice.

I'm a tea freak & cutting out iced tea would be like cutting off a limb. I DID cut back, but I drank tea everyday with my son & both of us were fine. He's 2 now & I've never seen any issues with me drinking tea.

I drink a few cans a day because it helps my nausea. I'm unsure why. In any case, I did it with all 3 of my daughters. The only time caffiene has had a negative effect on my kids is when I was breastfeeding.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine is fine-in moderation. We have enough to worry about in life without freaking ourselves out over something harmless in small amounts. I have 4 children and just found out we are expecting our 5th. I've been told in each pregnancy that one or two cups of coffee OR sodas a day is fine. When you start consuming 5, 6, 7, or even 8 cups a day is when it becomes harmful.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor said 1 cup a day is ok for me. I used to have about 2 cups to get through the work day, but now I have up to half a cup in the morning, and if I need a pick me up in the afternoon, I will have a few more sips of coffee or tea to keep going. I have noticed that I don't crave coffee as much, and sometimes have full blown aversions to it.

My doctor said two cups of coffee or two cans of soda a day. I think as long as your not ONLY drinking soda or coffee throughout the day you are fine. I have to have my Coke on a daily basis. I agree with "why risk it?"...! I completely cut all caffeine drinks out of my diet when I found out I was pregnant. I had a least 2-3 cups of coffee and 1-2 glasses of tea a day, I switched to sprite and limonade. Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I work at a coffee plant. We roast thousands of pounds of coffee a day along with tea. I used to drink about 3 to 4 cups a day. I don't want to risk anything with this pregnancy since I have miscarried in the past. (not due to the coffee because I quit last time too) I quit cold turkey and didn't have any headaches. I am much tired this time around but I must keep moving. I haven't had much chocolate either. Eating right is a great start so why not cut out the "bad" stuff.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I agree with "everything in moderation." The focus should be on consuming a good amount of water, organic fruits and veggies, etc, however I plan on cutting caffeine (from coffee) entirely and switching to decaf so I can enjoy my occasional milky way. I found out I am four and a half weeks and used to be a HUGE coffee drinker. Since I found out, I switched to 1 or 2 cups a day and now one week later, I am drinking half-caf. I figure when I switch to decaf, I won't even know the difference cause all I want to do is sleep all day anyways!!!

alikat518 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

If your lifestyle (like working nightshift) prevents you from entirely cutting out caffeine (like me!) then just limit it to 1-2 cups at work. I can't go a day without ANY caffeine, or the caffeine headaches prevent normal life, but I can do 1/2 caff at home. One of my cardiologists - I worked with him, was not a patient - mapped out the milligrams in coffee vs mountain dew, and encouraged me to just do what I'm comfortable with. You can have most anything in moderation. Just use common sense!

Stellah124 |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was told one cup of coffee, or two cans of soda a day is perfectly fine. I'm sure cutting it out completely is best, but some people are used to there coffee a day, as well as sodas and juices, and cutting it out completely can cause horrible moods and headaches. I currently work at Starbucks and it's really hard to not drink coffee or caffeine, so I make sure to drink decaf, unless I need a little pick me up, then a small cup of caffienated coffee. I do drink soda, not often but every once in awhile. It keeps me happy, which I'm sure keeps the baby happy. I guess just don't over do it! Eat healthy, drink lots of water and excersize, and i'm sure a little caffeine won't hurt

Natacreatedartist |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

From what my Dr. told me. EVERYTHING in moderation, except for those things that you just DON'T do--like drinking alcohol. The women in my family drink caffeine like it's going out of style. After going with my sister to her Dr appointments, and him telling her a little caffeine is fine, I made up my mind that whenever I get pregnant, I'm not going to give up Dr. Pepper (I was on a 5-6 can a day habit). Now that I'm 10 weeks pregnant, I can honestly say that while I still don't think caffeine is bad in moderation, I haven't wanted to drink caffeine AT ALL! To be honest, I haven't wanted to drink or eat anything at all. The only time I do drink caffeine is when I have steak, which is once every 2 weeks. And I know that doesn't make any sense because I eat the steak for iron and the caffeine blocks iron absorbtion.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I just recently found out I was pregnant....as in yesterday! So this coffee discussion is one that strikes home with me. I absolutely *love* my morning coffee!! Before I became pregnant I started cutting down to one travel cup a day. This morning I just made a 1/2 cup and added warm milk to the mix ( ie. a bootleg latte) We are just recently married and we had this gorgeous coffee roasted and ground for us while we were in Costa Rica on our honeymoon. Today was the official end of the bag. That being said.. I am going to say goodbye to my coffee until after our baby is born. My personal take is that if it makes you feel peppy and awake, it must be doing the same thing to your baby. I am going to substitute my coffee with getting more sleep! :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I drink one cup of coffee a day. I know one cup isn't going to hurt anything. I just think it's funny how people get so upset over a little caffeine or even one beer...or cigarette for that matter. The stress of eliminating caffeine completely could do more way more damage than a cup of joe. I agree that sodas are bad even if you aren't pregnant. Aspartame, brominated vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup, etc...Coffee is actually good for you. It really does help with the constipation! What's even worse is some of these women who preach about not a drop of caffeine go their whole pregnancy doing everything they are supposed to and they they go to deliver and they get shot up with narcotics for pain relief (which does harm the baby) and then they have to resuscitate the baby when it's born and give it Narcan because it has OD'ed. Yes, this is all true. So, I think we should all try to be a little less judgemental...

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I have a pre-existing seizure disorder, so the caffiene issue was the first thing I asked my doctor about. I am addicted to coffee...pure and simple. I can't deny that. If I go without coffee, I do go through withdrawls, bad. If I taper off, as I've done before, I'm fine for a while, then start getting sudden migraines. With my disorder, ANY headache usually results in a seizure. So, when I asked my doctor what to do, she told me to drink as little as possible, but not to go off of it. She said it was safer for me to have the caffiene than it is for me to have a seizure.

Caffeine is one of those things that should be used in moderation whether you're pregnant or not. In pregnancy there is a lot of strain on the body, caffeine affects the kidneys horribly so if you can try and stay away from caffeine, especially dark soda's like coke, pepsi and dr. pepper. coffee is stronger than soda's and should be limited...your kidneys are in overtime right now so treat them kindly

sistertogroompaul made a post saying that caffeine absorbs the calcium from bones which isn't entirely accurate. What really absorbs the calcium from bones is the phosphorous in any carbonated beverage, caffeinated or otherwise. That being said, as long as my heartburn stays at bay, I will continue to have my two diet cokes or diet mt dews during the day because there is still less caffeine in those two cans than in the cup of coffee my husband has in the morning.

With my first 2 pregnancies I definitely didn't do it "by-the-book" but by the grace of God both of my boys came out perfect. I don't want to take any chances this time, but my doctor has told myself withdrawal symptoms aren't healthy during pregnancy either, so I cut out caffeine slowly. Went from 2 cups to one, then cut that from a large to a medium. Shortly I'll make it a small and then switch to decaf.

deroumanie |

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm surprised a bump "expert" is saying the jury is out. More than 1 study has found than caffeine in excess of 200 mg/day is damaging to the baby. If you make your coffee at home, that's about 2 cups. In general, caffeine constricts bloodflow so it makes sense that it's no good for you or baby but if you have a habit of it and going without would be too much of a hardship, I have not found any studies that indicate 1 cup/day is a problem. Also you could try to switching to black tea which still has caffeine but less so and you can spice it up to make a "chai." Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition does an excellent job of discussing this if you want further reading.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was really worried about this before I got pregnant because me and coffee houses are an everyday occurrence. About 2 weeks before I found out that I was 6.5 weeks pregnant I developed a severe aversion to coffee. I don't want to smell it, touch it, or be around it. That worked out really nicely. Hopefully by trimester 2 I'll be completely unhooked. My best friend who is at 19 weeks says that she is having bad headaches during the second trimester and has started drinking more caffeine to deal with it.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

You know what everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But you should know that everyone and every pregnancy is different. If you as a person decide that drinking caffeine is not for you, then fine, whatever floats your boat. But you and nobody else has the right to judge anyone who chooses to have caffeine in moderation. Choose what's right for you can keep it moving. I am on my third pregnancy and my first two children came out both strong and healthy. I did not have any iron deficiency, and my 10yrs old daughter is a certified genius, with the height of 5'4, with no medical problems and no period yet either. My 3yrs old son, is the size of a five yrs boy, able to read and write. These are the most active, happy, and athletic children, with manors you would meet on this planet, and I had caffeine during both pregnancy and had them full term. Besides I don't drink decaf and I'm going to start now. The choice drink or not to drink caffeine should be between the pregnant woman, and her doctor, and my doctor tells me up to 2 cups per day as long as it wasn't espresso (in which i don't drink anyway). So I, being the pregnant woman with a choice, chooses to continue with my chocolate and other caffeine.

I just know when I feel like complete crap all day long and nothing tastes good, even water, and milk makes me vomit, and I just 'need' a dr pepper 1x a day (i am more worried about aspertame in diet, than caffiene) for lunch, I'm gonna do it.....and if after puking all day i want a candy bar, I don't think its a huge deal. I've had 2 wonderful healthy (big) for those that say it causes low birth weight) boys and I don't deprive myself of cravings (in moderation) Happy Mommy makes happy baby.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor gave me the OK to keep coffee in my diet only because i limit the amount i drink in a day. I went from a pot of coffee by myself in the am to just a cup. But i haven't been able to stand the smell of it so i guess that's OK. I drink Ginger Green tea now to help settle my tummy. I keep chocolate with me to fight the binge cravings. But if you keep it in moderation and not over do it then you should be fine. i don't drink coffee for the most part in my 3rd trimester because with my last pregnancy my blood pressure would be higher then we wanted it to be. Best of luck. I'm not a professional in anyway but i have experience and my FP and MW both say its fine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Well, After reading of these comments drinking my 1 cup of coffee each morning is starting to concern me. My OB told me that 1 cup a day is fine. So about a week ago I started drinking it again. I do not eat chocolate at this point or any other caffeine at the moment because I feel sick with the 1st trimester blues. The coffee is the one thing that I really look forward to. I certainly DO NOT want to do anything to put my baby in harms way. Not really sure what to do. I could just not drink it. Why do doctors say 1 cup a day is okay if it is not? It is so hard to give up the one thing that I like right now. I did drink diet coke with my first pregnancy, but not during the 1st trimester. I just could not drink it during the 1st trimester. But my daughter could not have been a more amazing baby. No sleeping issues or delays in development. Well, maybe decaf is an option for me. Thanks for all the insight on here.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

A few of the books I have read say that 300 mg of caffeine a day is ok. Thats one cup of coffee. I love my coffee! I don't drink a cup a day now, but I do drink a cup or two a week. The mayo clinic website says that a 16 oz brewed cup of joe has 143-206 mg of caffeine, coke has 35mg, and the highest is Mountain Dew with 54. I am sure you will be fine! Coffee is a comfort for me, and im sure if you are comfy and happy, that is better than unhappy and craving coffee. : ) drink your coffee. : )

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My first baby I drank alot of pop and he had ADHD. or so they said. He was extremly hyper, as a baby he would scream like mad, so bad that the cops would get called. the dr said it was colic. With my 2nd one I was very careful gave up the caffiene completly. and he was very mellow. hardly ever cried, and to this day is not the least bit hyper. Now could it have been the caffiene? I don't know. I also smoked through my first pregnancy, and he had asthma, pnemonia, and always sick. My 2nd I quit at 2 months and he has never had anything more than a cold. Hard to say if caffine is good or bad. I accually feel better without it after the withdrawl which I basically had no energy and was wanting to sleep. Now that has passed and I have more energy than before I got pregnant.

My doctor said absolutely no caffine. If you think about your little, tiny baby in the first trimester (at 9 weeks about an inch long) and that little, tiny heart, 300mgs of caffine can send that little tiny heart into cardiac arrest... that's how my doctor explained it to me and it makes sense. Right?!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My morning sickness got really bad and i was so dehydrated i was admitted in to the hospoital, my OB told me that a little bit of caffeine everyday is not bad. If you are a coffee drinker (drinks coffee everyday) having a cup of coffee or two a day is not bad for you, bc if you just just stop cold turkey you are going to start getting caffeine headaches and its really tough to get those to go away... some mothers are very protective and the moment they find out they are pregnant they quit alot of stuff... but being TO careful can cause more troubles in the long run!!! just my ideas...

My OB told me last week no coffee ever under any circumstances. Apparently, very recent studies have shown there is a link to miscarriages. Now, I am sure plenty of women have had coffee while pregnant and been ok. But after having been given those instructions from my OB, how could I ever take the chance? Giving up caffeine has been incredibly difficult!!! It's for a good cause though. :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

The way I look at it is, everything you feel, your baby feels. So if you're a coffee, soda or tea drinker up until you give birth, once the baby is born and isn't getting that caffeine from you, it will go through withdrawals. I'm slowly working my way down from 2 grande lattes a day to a watered down iced tea.

There was a sober college initiative that tried to get college students off caffeine. I remember it was quite difficult for students to concentrate during exam sessions as they couldn't stay up late to learn or stay up during the day to go to classes. I imagine it's quite hard for anyone to give of coffee. But a baby deserves such a sacrifice. Just thinking of my baby boy or baby girl I can quite anything.

If something can be bad for you it will surely be bad for the baby. Maybe limit yourself to just a sip of coffee after meals as coffee helps the digestion. My wife needed an anorexia treatment before she could get pregnant as her body mass was too low. She was quite the caffeine addict and it was very hard for her to give it up. In the first 4 months she still drank a sip here and there. Then she switched to decaf and that really helped.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

To each unto their own, I suppose; at the risk of sounding judgmental (which I'm not trying to be!), me personally, if I have a shadow of a doubt that something might be bad for our baby, I'm not ingesting it. Unnecessary risks just aren't worth it. Caffeine is a drug, and just like with alcohol or any other drug, there's no defined amount that a dr. can tell you that will effect a baby. In other words, one person could drink cokes or coffee all day long all 9 months long and have a perfectly fine baby, but another woman can drink 1 coke during her pregnancy and have a baby with problems. I love my coffee, I love my green tea, and I adore chocolate...however, I love my baby more. Of course, I happen to find coffee nauseating now, and the smell of green tea sends me into orbit, so I got lucky (I guess? First time I *ever* considering my m/s 'lucky'! lol). Chocolate...well, I drink chocolate Shakeology, and it has an intense enough chocolate flavor but it's sans caffeine, so I win there, too. And for the mama that listed the caffeine stats for chocolate bars...yeah, your caffeine is really low (unless you eat tons of candy bars!), but the rest of the ingredients in most of them are pure, unadulterated crap: like high amounts of high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oils, for instance. So I wouldn't really recommend a candy bar for a chocolate fix, either...but that's just me. No studies really show anything conclusively or consistently pro/anti caffeine, so do what you feel is okay...just keep in mind that it took a lot of babies presenting problems to show anything conclusive or consistent about the effects of smoking or drinking, too...

I have a love hate relationship with caffeine. I started drinking coffee when I was in high school, and unfortunately that was my way to drugs. I've been in cocaine rehab and I've overcome the addiction, and now I've totally replaced coffee with green tea, which has the exact effect, only it's milder and it contains a lot of antioxidants, so it's good for you and for the baby.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I've read through a lot of posts here. I am actually stunned by the amount of scare tactics some people use here. Good for you not drinking caffeine prior to pregnancy, but it seems you would rather use your prejudice attitude towards caffeine to scare some women who are just trying to find answers if ONE small cup of coffee per day is fine. Do you really have to be so negative?????? I am pregnant for the second time. My first daughter was very healthy. I didn't have any caffeine when I was pregnant with her. However, 8 years later I am pregnant again and 8 years is a long time to start a LEGAL habit. I have habitually been drinking one to two cups of coffee per day prior to my pregnancy. It's NOT a drug like some people have posted here, however, it is something that becomes a habit. Just like eating a nice tempting piece of cake. It's a bean and it tastes good and it gives you a little jolt of energy which helps you get through a long boring day in the office. I have been drinking about 5 cups of small iced half decaf coffees per week. I came here to try to find what other people are drinking. It's not wine, it's not a cigarette, it's a small half decaf iced coffee and many of you are trying to scare people like me out of drinking this measly portion of caffeine. Get off your stinking high horses and don't go on this post if you are going to use scare tactics for people who are asking a harmless question. It's pathetic and now you've made one pregnant woman very hormonal. Good job.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Wow, some of these answers are enough to make anyone, pregnant or not, stop drinking coffee or eating chocolate. I think the jury is still out on whether caffeine is a danger during pregnancy. Many doctors will say it is ok in moderation, just like everything else. My Dr has said that and it's not like I drank it everyday prior to becoming pregnant. Moderation is key.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm a HUGE tea drinker...as in we go through a pitcher of tea a day in my house (just me and my boyfriend). When I found out I was pregnant I thought I would DIE without my tea. So I asked my nutritionist and she said that while it is best to not drink caffeine, a glass a day is perfectly fine. My best friend is pregnant too and she is having bad headaches. Her doctor actually told her to take Tylenol with a glass of soda to help it go away faster. So if you're a huge caffeine drinker, I think its safe to say you don't have to cut it out completely.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm in the very EARLY stages of my pregnancy (like just found out this week... 4 weeks 2 days!) and am a huge coffee drinker. During my first pregnancy, I didn't drink any coffee during the first trimester due to morning sickness then had one cup a day for the remainder of my pregnancy and delivered a perfect baby girl. My doctor said 1-2 cups a day is fine. Now that I'm pregnant again, I'd like to not drink caffeine during my first trimester but my head is killing me!!!! And honestly, soda (especially diet soda) and decaf coffee/teas are so loaded with chemicals that I won't touch it. I'm surprised to read that doctors are suggesting those over a sip of organic coffee! I'd rather go cold turkey than drink those. BUT... I'm trying sipping organic black tea or coffee to curb my headache and I'm hoping that it's enough to stop it. I stress organic because anything else is so loaded with chemicals and pesticides that caffeine is not my concern.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Personally I've decided to stay on the safe side. I use to be a major coffee and tea drinker 5 to 6 cups a day, coffee is now making me sick (just to smell it) and I have switched to decaf tea when I need that flavor otherwise just water and 7up (though every 3 or 4 days I do allow myself a single piece of chocolate). However, my mom drank Coca Cola all through her pregnancy with me. I was a healthy weight, size, according to her and everyone else who knew me then I was the least fussy and happiest baby they knew and I slept through the night. On the other side my Aunt did everything on the safe side, absolutely no caffeine and my cousin was almost not stop crying and woke them up 2 or 3 times a night. I would just say do what you feel is right and what you are advised by your doctor to do, as with everything else in life, excess with anything can be bad.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was very careful during my first trimester to avoid caffeine (and anything else potentially damaging) at all costs. Once I hit the second trimester, I asked my Dr. about coffee, and she said that having my normal cup or two in the morning was not a problem at all, but that I should avoid having like 3 tall Starbucks (or other kinds with more caffeine than the average home-brewed cup) a day. Since I never had that much anyway, that was not a problem. I think our little ones can handle more than we give them credit for!!

I wound up with kidney stones with my 1st pregnancy because I was 18 and wasn't doing what I should by drinking enough water instead of soft drinks, etc. I was drinking some water but the amount needed when you're pregnant is definitely more than usual. I ended up delivery 5 weeks early because of the complications with the kidney stones. I definitely suggest staying away from more than one cup of coffee a day and drinking LOTS of water to compensate for it.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

You can relish your daily coffee kick during your pregnancy so long as you limit your caffeine intake to 200mg a day, that’s what my medical practitioner instructed me to do. This amounts to about two cups of instant coffee or one and a half cups of filtered coffee. Regularly having more than 200 mg of caffeine throughout pregnancy can boost the risk of miscarriage or having a baby with reduced birth heaviness. The 200mg limit encompasses all causes of caffeine. So as well as coffee you'll need to enumerate teas, colas, power drinks and even chocolate! Famous coffee shop Ocala

My doctor told me it was fine, that I would have to have like 6 cans of Dr pepper a day to go over my caffeine limit lol. Which was something like 200mg a day. That in mind when it comes to caffeine it depends on where it is coming from, coffee has a lot more than soda, and chocolate less than soda, but soda and chocolate also add sugar. Energy drinks are of course a big no no as they have all sorts of other weird stuff in them. This from the APA is handy http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/caffeine.html

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Drinking caffeine during your pregnancy isn't a bad thing but it's not the best thing to do. Tea,sodas, chocolates and coffee itself contain caffeine. According to the book "Pregnancy for Dummies" there is no evidence that suggests that caffeine can cause birth defects. Although if you do consume a lot of it, it can raise the risk of miscarriage. In general, pregnant or not, if you consume too much of a product it can risk your health. "Most studies suggest that it takes more than 200 mg of caffeine a day to affect the fetus."

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was a heavy coffee drinker before finding out I'm pregnant. At first I cut out caffeine completely but decided after research that low to moderate consumption was fine - still no coffee but a glass of soda daily. Since my caffeine tolerance is significantly lower from cutting out the coffee, a glass of soda gives me just an enough jolt to survive my toddler while toting my over-sized load around the house. :) The doc advised that 1-2 cups of coffee per day or 200 mg of caffeine total is a safe guideline. He also told me to stop asking Google for advice but rather to refer to ACOG (American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists). So here's what they say: http://www.acog.org/About_ACOG/News_Room/News_Releases/2010/No_Link_Between_Moderate_Caffeine_Consumption_and_Miscarriage http://www.acog.org/Resources_And_Publications/Committee_Opinions/Committee_on_Obstetric_Practice/Moderate_Caffeine_Consumption_During_Pregnancy In short, there is no link between moderate caffeine consumption (under 200 mg/day) and either miscarriage or preterm birth. Also, a previous poster stated that caffeine crosses the placenta (true) and causes a decrease in uterine blood flow/fetal oxygenation (FALSE). According to the "experts" (either take my word for it or read it for yourself from ACOG), moderate caffeine consumption does not affect blow flow to the baby. Don't let anyone scare you on here, ladies! No matter what posters say their credentials are as they attempt to terrify you, as far as I know the bump doesn't include a resume checker. Stick to ACOG, AAP, and your doctor before you lose any sleep. :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I am an OB/GYN and I am 17 weeks pregnant. The only reason I limited my caffeine intake in the first trimester was because it made me nauseous. Since then I drink as much coffee as I want (which for a doctor is a lot, probably 2-5 cups daily). There is absolutely no good research saying that we should limit caffeine intake. For every study you find that says there are risks, you will find 2 that say there are no risks. As for the person who commented on caffeine being a teratogen, I have never delivered a baby that had birth defects related to caffeine, nor have I heard of a study showing this association. What caffeine will do is make you urinate more, make you jittery or dizzy, increase heartburn, and keep you up at night. If you don't feel these affects, or don't drink enough caffeine to notice them in your daily life, you will be fine! For everyone who is worried about caffeine intake, you should rest assured that me and all of my OB/GYN colleagues drink caffeine throughout pregnancy. We also eat uncooked lunch meat, soft cheeses, sushi, and drink wine (in very limited quantities of course). If you maintain an overall balanced diet, EXERCISE, and minimize stress you will feel good and have a healthy pregnancy.

I quit drinking coffee when I found I was pregnant, but asking speaking with my doctor have started drinking a cup as needed as a way to handle my severe migraines, which I've had for years. The caffeine eases the pain somewhat and I feel more comfortable drinking caffeinated tea than resorting to any medication. I agree with the comments that moderation is the key during pregnancy, as in everyday life for a healthy body.

I would say that it is better not too. At least for my it was quite difficult conceiving, which I finally did naturally, but I do not want to take any chances. And think about it this way with common sense... is coffee of any good for your developing baby? or you better have an orange juice?

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Lots of outdated information here. A study by the Birmingham University found "moderate" coffee intake (set at four cups a day!) has no dehydrating effect on the body. While coffee may indeed be a very mild diuretic, demonizing it as we have a tendency to do is uncalled for. Moderation is key with anything. There's absolutely no reason to completely abstain from a substance that has, time and time again, been found to be completely safe. Suggestions to switch to caffeinated tea for health reasons are ridiculous. Caffeine is caffeine. Your body doesn't care where it's coming from.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I'm on my third healthy pregnancy, and I drank coffee with all of my pregnancies. Ofcourse I stuck by the rule that my nurse suggested- no more that 2 8oz cups of coffee a day of coffee or no more that 2-3 cups of Black Tea. My kids didn't have developmental issues and didn't come out fussy eighther. I drink 10 or more cups of water a day as well, but I've always been a big water drinker. I also don't drink soda. I love my chocolate, but again, moderation is the key. My advice is ask your doctor or nurse what is best for your body and baby, live healthy, and enjoy your pregnancy!
