Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

Re: Is it okay to drink caffeine while I'm pregnant?

The Bump Expert

The jury is out on whether caffeine can actually hurt your fetus, but most health-care professionals do recommend limiting intake. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it pulls fluids and calcium from both you and baby and will keep you running to the bathroom. (As if you aren't peeing enough already.) Also, caffeine has no nutritional value and can affect your mood, sleep schedule and iron absorption. And it’s not just the coffee -- remember, caffeine is also found in most teas, soft drinks and chocolates. Play it safe by totally eliminating caffeine, but If you simply can’t kick the habit, at least cut back. Some studies show that excessive caffeine consumption (more than300 mg or two or three 8-ounce cups a day) can increase chances of miscarriage or premature birth.

Going cold turkey can be tough, so try lowering your caffeine intake gradually. If you’re a coffee drinker, work your way down to half-caf before becoming a full-fledged decaf drinker. Exercise and frequent small meals (good ideas whether or not you're kicking a habit) will help keep up your energy during the withdrawal. If you just like to have a tasty drink on your desk, try mixing fruit juice with sparkling water instead, or customize decaffeinated tea by adding cinnamon, cloves or bits of your favorite fruit. Though herbal teas usually don't have caffeine, run the ingredient list by your doctor first -- some may not be safe for baby.

re: Q: Is Caffeine Okay?

I don't drink coffee, but I have to have my chocolate. Do you think it's okay to have a small amount or just cut it out completely?

ktmiles | September 29 , 2007 7:37 AM

re: Q: Is Caffeine Okay?

My doctor says that caffeine is okay in limited amounts. You don't have to cut it out completely. It's just that too much can be damaging. (You can have your chocolate-just not all the time)

What types of herbal teas are safe to drink?

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Make your own decaf tea by boiling water, let it cool a little, then pour the water over the leaves (enough to cover), let sit for one minute, then discard the water. Add more water and steep to make your cup, and you may drink that. The caffeine comes out of the tea within the first 30-45 seconds.

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

OMG I MISS MY COFFEE! i was definitely sure to kick my coffee drinking though. My dad would have a cup made for me every morning before school. But when i found out i was pregnant i totally stopped drinking it. I also LOVE Mt. Dew. I drink it all the time. but now whenever i get it i buy it caffeine free. The only time i drink caffeine is when we go out to eat or at school when i drink tea for lunch. =D

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

The main problem with caffeine is that it is a vasoconstrictor- that means it closes up your blood vessels, which means that it squeezes off bloodflow to your baby/placenta! Not a good thing... kind of like trying to breathe through a straw, you still get oxygen but after a few seconds it doesn't feel good and you think you're suffocating. Again as I always say--- ANYTHING IN MODERATION--- we have enough to worry about during pregnancy don't stress yourself out about an occasional soda, subway sandwich, or sushi roll! Stress is way worse for your baby!

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

thats BS I have had chocolate and caffeine through my whole pregnancy and I am full turm.

babycarder1 | April 25 , 2009 12:41 PM

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

I used to work in a teratogen research lab primarily for FAS, but also other teratogens like caffeine. That's right... caffeine is considered a teratogen because it crosses the placenta and can cause detrimental neuropschological effects (that is, if you haven't miscarried already). It primarily causes developmental motor delays. Too much caffeine can also cause infants to be overly fussy, especially during feeding. Do yourself and your baby a favor, don't drink caffeine at all if you can help it, or if you think you are just too addicted to resist it, stop and ask yourself if it's really worth it. Hopefully, you'll know the answer. True that 1 or 2 caffeinated drinks here and there won't do much damage, but if you're consuming them everyday, it's time to rethink some things. I hope this helps clear a few things up because there isn't a lot of media attention around caffeine yet, but I'm sure there will be in the near future. Unfortunately, the damage may already be done by then.

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

Everyone needs to lighten up, it true that it is probably best to eliminate caffeine, its probably also best to not have anything fried or with butter etc... but come on seriously having a cup a day is fine. I know several mothers who drank a cup of coffee throughout their pregnancy and gave birth to happy, healthy babies who in turn became intellegent successful adults. Thats being said, don't go overboard.

I love my coffee. I took 2 PT and got 2 BFN. So I drank mountain dew, coffee, tea and Dr. pepper. To my surprise I am pregnant! Eeeek. Testing on day 10 and 12 is too early. I just saw the Dr. and I am almost 6 weeks pregnant! No more caffeine for me!

re: Q: Is caffeine okay?

my doctor said one or two cups of coffee a day is fine, and she has one of the best reputations of any of the ob/gyns in the area; I think it's irresponsible in fact to scare the crap out of pregnant women that allow themselves this one perfectly fine luxury (in moderation) just b/c you opt to go cold turkey.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

The jury is not out. You are not supposed to have any more caffeine than about 2 8oz cups of regular coffee. More than that has been proven to increase miscarriage risk. I never liked coffee but was a big tea drinker. I've switched to decaf, but still have chocolate from time to time.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

This is my thrid pregnancy and I had no caffeine during the first two pregnancies. I plan to do the same this time. My two children are excellent sleepers and I swear it to be because of the no caffeinne. The both slept through the night by the third week. Although legal, caffeine is a drug and the baby would need to go through detox. Just like when I stop having caffeine I feel a bit cranky so would the baby once he/she is born. It may sound funny, but to me it was worth it. Give your son to be little one the best possible advantages and sip on some water or caffeine free!

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Caffeine drains your body of Iron. This is why older people who have been avid caffeine drinkers in their younger days are also more pron to osteoporosis. You are putting your child at risk for sure by drinking caffeine especially in the first trimester while the bones are developing. Many women drink caffeine all through their pregnancy and say their baby is fine but what they don't realize is that their child has a higher risk of SIDS. Do your research for sure if you are going to drink caffeine.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I want a Coke sooooooo bad!!! I used to drink one EVERY day before getting pregnant, but I completely gave it up just to be safe. Even though the jury may/ may not be out still on that verdict, there was a point too where it was thought that it was okay for women to smoke and drink while they were pregnant .

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I've read that you can have about 200 mg a day safely. That's two small cups of coffee (not the kind of cups that most of drink). So I gave up coffee before we stopped using birth control because I didn't want caffeine withdrawals. Starbucks coffee though, for instance is hyper-caffeinated, so it also depends on the type and strength of coffee. I have terrible morning sickness though and coffee (of all things) is smelling really good! So I might have to have a little. The jury is definitely still out, but since it just has the potential to be harmful... I think most people just automatically rule it out.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My ob says moderation is the key to everything. I am a coke aholic and I drank a few a week with my son. He is perfectly healthy and was a great sleeper from the beginning. That doesn't mean of course that some people might not have issues with it but I think it's better to give into a craving now and then than to deal with the stress of denying yourself.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I believe it is more what what you feel is right for you and the baby. When my mom had me over twenty years ago the doctor told her to drink more that three cups of coffee a day because of her headaces. When she had my brother only four years later a different doctor told her to not drink more than four cups a day. A family friend of mine is a RN and told me to not have more than a cup a day but my doctor told me my first visit to go cold turkey and cut out any means of caffine. It should be what you feel is best for you and your baby not an educated guess, because no two doctors are going to say the same thing. If you feel caffine is fine then don't cut it out, but if it worries you then gradually work yourself to not consuming any.

DuckyBear | August 19 , 2009 1:01 PM

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My doctor said I don't have to cut caffeine out 100%. She's more worried about the sugar than anything. But, if you're like me and you're addicted to Pepsi (or coke etc), just try caffeine free soda. Most don't taste that much different than the original caffeine-filled sodas. That;s how I got through my first pregnancy and am getting through my second.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I was told by my Dr. One cup a day is not bad, she also gave me options 1. One cup 2. Mix half decaf and half regular 3. Decaf all the way 4. No latte's or anything with added sugars (goodbye vanilla lattes!, Mocha's and Carmel Latte's, etc.!)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

For those of you wondering about chocolate, according to "Pregnancy for Dummies," the "average-sized chocolate bar or cup of hot cocoa has around 6 mg of caffeine". Also, according to Nutritiondata.com a snicker's bar has 4.6 mg of caffeine. So basically you would need to eat a lot of chocolate to cause any problems. http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/sweets/5461/2

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I didn't cahnge a thing about what I ate or drank when I was pregnant. I mean of course I didnt drink alcohol or anything (I was only 18 anyway) but as far as soda, a little coffee (I never drank much anyway), and junk foods, it all stayed the same. And my baby was prefectly healthy. The only think I really changed was not eating my steaks medium rare. To this day my baby (now 5 months) has never had any illnesses at all.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I used to drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day and a Diet Pepsi. My doctor told me it was alright to drink a cup a day, but to cut out the rest of the caffiene. I am prone to migraine headaches, so my doctor said not to cold turkey. So, I only have 1 cup of coffee a day.

Mirage222 | August 28 , 2009 1:12 PM

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Everything is fine in moderation. I'm a coffee hound and I've had two babies and am on my third pregnancy now. Cutting your morning coffee can be tough. Especially the first week with headaches , short temp and the sleepiness especially when you're in your first trimester. The easiest way I've learned to deal with this is to make your morning coffee with half decaf and half regular coffee grounds this way you're cutting the caffeine but your body doesn't recognize it as much. Also, cut out the McCafe and Starbucks. Even the decaf espressos from those two places have as much or more caffeine in them as regular drip coffee from home.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Almost everything you like with caffeine can be consumed in a decaffeinated version. It can be hard if your body is really used to having the caffeine, but taking it down gradually is better than not taking it down at all.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

From past experience, it's not a bad idea to cut back when you are further along anyhow because the baby starts kicking your insides like crazy because they can't sleep ;) Me and my husband are trying to get pregnant and it's frustrating because I work for a beverage company that sells energy drinks and I can't drink my moster lo-carb out of fear I might affect conceiving or the baby when I become pregnant. A full throttle energy drinks has over 3,000mg of caffiene containing ingredients :(

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Ya know how when crack addicts get pregnant? and then their babies come out addicted to crack? My doctor says that it is similar (though less severe) with caffeine and other foods. She said that one of her patients drank coffee every day during pregnancy and breast feeding. Her baby couldn't stop crying when it was born because of caffeine withdrawal. Dr. told her to cut out the coffee, 3 weeks later, baby stopped crying. Same thing with a patient who craved nothing but Taco Bell for the whole 3rd trimester, baby came out with heartburn. She said that what we should eat during pregnancy should reflect what we want our baby to crave. :D

IMHO, prudence never hurt anyone. I'm very very glad that the mommies who consumed caffeine didn't experience any problems, but that doesn't mean that no one will. And it never hurts to "behave as though"...as in behaving as though caffeine were harmful. For me...I just find other things to drink and sit tight with the knowledge that on the way out there chance that it could hurt my lil peanut...I'm safe! :) Good luck, Mommies!

I miscarried at 10 weeks and while I don't think caffeine is generally harmful if within the boundaries set by your OB and the health profession, I'm not planning on taking any chances the next time we get pregnant, so I'm shooting for total abstaination. Here's hoping it helps. :)

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

My OBGYN said NO caffiene......are they crazy? I was drinking 1 bottle frappachino a day, so I stopped that. I recently gave up though. If I want a bit of chocolate, I'm going for it. I don't drink pepsi, but that is one of the things that helps with my naseau, so I'm going to drink that. My mom drank coke while she was pregnant with both me and my brother and we're fine. I've also just read that eating sushi is fine to, in fact it is encouraged as a part of essential prenatal health in Japan. From what I've read, you stay away from the high mercury fish wether raw or cooked, and you steer clear of oysters etc. But, as far as say raw sushi salmon....A ok as long as it is fresh and in moderation. By fresh, doesn't smell! So, I'm doing that too. My advice is do research and include other countries in your research.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

With my first, i didn't find out i was pregnant until i was 4 months along. By then i had consumed numerous Dr Pepper's. I was very worried! My son was bon healthy, he slept thru the night by the age of 1 month, and wasn't at all overly fussy. I think everyone's pregnancy and turnout is different and dependant upon soooo many factors other than solely caffeine intake. Just make general healthy choices.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Sprite and Root beer don't have caffeine, but you have to watch out for the high levels of sugar. Iced tea does has caffeine, but lemonade doesn't. Herbal tea's haven't been researched enough in conjunction with pregnancy. I was recommended to avoid herbal tea and just drink decaf black tea, I'm a huge tea drinking fan... so it took a while to get used to.

Several doctors I've talked to say a pop-a-day isn't going to hurt anything. To be on the safe side, I don't drink that much, but a pop now and then or a little chocolate is not harmful to the baby, so relax, and just "eat smart for the most part".

My doctor actually told me that 3-4 cups of caffeine per week is safe. She said that they found that any more than that leads to a 50% miscarriage rate in the first trimester. Not sure what the scientific proof is on this, it's just what I was told.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

This has been so hard for me. I had no idea how dependent my body was on caffeine until I stopped drinking coffee and tea. I didn't have that many drinks before, a cup of coffee or a larger iced coffee in the morning and a cup of tea in the earlier evening, and I was never much of a soda drinker, but I missed them hard. I cut out all liquid caffeine, and I just have chocolate every now and then now. I just didn't want to be trying to go off coffee once the baby is born and I am all sleep deprived. But I miss coffee every day. I don't go near coffee shops, and if someone is grinding beans in the grocery store I want to rub them all over my face. I should carry an ultrasound pic around with me to look at when I get coffee-sad.

mctrudy | October 27 , 2009 4:08 PM

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

NO! Even small amounts of caffeine have been PROVEN to reach the fetus. The affects are that the neurotransmitters that are forming new neuropathways in your baby's brain overfire their destination, just like alcohol causes them to underfire (never reaching) their destination. Quit being selfish! It's only 9 months, you'll survive without it!

Ocassionally it will be fine. This is my second pregnancy and my first child turned out completely healthy, bright, and happy. Like with my first pregnancy, I have been drinking 1cup of 1/2 cafe once in a while (about every other day). On the other days I drink one cup of decaf (out of habit). I'm sure most docotors would agree that this is more than moderate. My OB told me I could have one full strength a day and be fine. The only reason I still drink the 1/2 cafe is because the prenatal vitamins really bind me up (= No Poop)! The coffee helps with that!

My father is an OB -- and the person I always go to when I have questions. As I have read above, he also says to limit your caffeine intake to 2 cups a day. I am a coffee addict so had coffee during my entire first pregnancy, and my 6-year-old daughter has scored the highest in her grade level on intelligence tests, so these doctors DO know what they are talking about (no brain damage here). Remember, decaffeinated coffee isn't completely caffeine free, so don't go overboard.

The amount of caffeine in an entire BAR of chocolate equates to about 9mg, a cup of regular coffee has about 60 (at least) I see no reason why not to indulge, as long as you're not eating 10 chocolate bars a day. Dark chocolate though, as more, about 30 mg. It's all about moderation.

I am reading the book "Skinny Bitch, Bun in the Oven" and the authors in this book seriously discourage the use of Caffeine during pregnancy, It is a diuretic and it can raise blood pressure. I have given up coffee and started drinking a little bit of decaf tea every now and then. I also don't drink any soda except for ginger ale. Personally I don't think a little caffeine will hurt but just not in excess.

A small amount of caffeine is supposed to be ok, but why would I take the chance?

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

I say side in the error of caution, especially in the first trimester where you're likely to have a miscarrage. Towards the end you can always do decaf. Caffeine can dehydrate your body, and I'm person who needs to me reminded to drink more water. Drinking orange juice can help with a sugar boost in the morning, or a flavored steamer at Starbucks. Which is just steamed milk with your favorite flavor.

So I am addicted to Diet Mt. Dew...oh yes. But is there anything wrong with Caffiene free Diet Mt. Dew? I can deal with that.

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

Hee hee, in my humble, crunchy opinion, if you're going to have coffee or tea, go decaf. You're drinking coffee because you like the taste in the first place, right? Not because you're an addict? So that's an easy switch. Soda is deficient of any helpful nutrients, and just takes up space that you could be filling with more nutritious foods and drinks. Not only that, but artificial sweetners, flavors, and colors are all starting to be studied more and more for their negative effects on kids and adults. Artificial colors (like those found in Moutain Dew specifically) are linked to ADD in kids. So who knows what it's doing to your baby. So I'd steer clear of any soda. It's just empty calories that leaches calcium from your body, and from your baby. So why do it?

Q&A: Is caffeine okay during pregnancy?

It's interesting the way people can give answers in such an absolute, nazi-like fashion. I'm glad that I have a mind of my own and have read up on this, as well as talking with people who did/didn't drink coffee during their pregnancy. The folks who try to scare people into thinking they are going to have a miscarriage if they drink a cup of coffee in the morning should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, you need to seriously cut back on caffeine, sodas, sugar, etc. while you are pregnant - simply to be the healthiest you can be for yourself and your baby. But your baby isn't going to become a caffeine addict if you have a cup of coffee! I am a bit of a chocoholic and if I want chocolate, I'm going to have it! I also eat a healthy diet, take my vitamins and get my exercise. Just be a healthy, happy person - that's the best you can do for your baby. And have your dang cup of coffee if you need it! You are not a bad mother.
