Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm super emotional! I know that being hormonal is part of pregnancy, but how do I know what's normal and what isn't?

Re: I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm super emotional! I know that being hormonal is part of pregnancy, but how do I know what's normal and what isn't?

The Bump Expert

Every pregnancy is different, but you're right that (unfortunately) being emotional is often a big part of pregnancy. Your body is going through some pretty crazy changes, and it can be especially trying during the first trimester when you're just getting used to the transformation.

While mood swings during pregnancy can be traced to everything from fatigue, physical stress and metabolic changes, the main culprit is your hormones. During the first few months after conception, the levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone change dramatically, which has significant effect on brain chemistry. So if you find yourself spontaneously bursting into tears or breaking into a laughing fit, don't worry -- you're pregnant, not crazy.

For most women, the moodiness is most noticeable in the first few months of pregnancy and the last weeks leading up to delivery. If yours seem extreme or are affecting your way of life, talk with your doc. She'll be able to guide you towards further care.

re: Q: Normal emotions?

Thank you for that advice. I thought I was crazy for crying for no reason!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I seem to get very irritable easily--- and lose my temper quickly too...

re: Q: Normal emotions?

U Know what!.... That is the same thing I find myself going through! I mean one minute, I am so happy with life and admiring the flowers.... and then I am crying over a commercial, or yelling at my husband for him just walking into a room, just because he is trying to hug me! I really thought I was going crazy until I read these Q &A's..... gooosh you guys can sure make a first "timer" feel normal.... (tears) THANKS!!!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I got upset with my husband for something silly and before I knew it I was yelling about it. Once I registered the look in his face, I realized how I was acting and felt so bad about it, I started crying. He did not know what to do! You are definitely NOT alone!

re: Q: Normal emotions?

I totally cried for an hour last night... no real reason behind it. Just all of a sudden overwhelmed by being happy, scared, thrilled, etc. Ours is a "honeymoon baby" -- I definitely wasn't expecting to EXPECT already! My hubby was great, telling me he has the same excitement, happiness, scared-ness, too. Pretty sure it won't be the last crying jag I have! I kind of feel on the brink of it a lot this past week.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Aside from the crying and the random anger, I find myself withdrawing from my husband. I love him and he's being so wonderful to me, but I am kind of over him. It sounds so terrible, I know. Perhaps it has to do with my night sickness and the general feeling of ick I have all day. My poor husband...thank goodness he's being so forgiving and gentle with me. I am hoping that 2nd tri will bring me back to my senses.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Yeah I feel bad for my boyfriend... I am so happy and so is he but I keep having "freak outs" I am trying to control myself but I keep getting TOO upset and finding myself later apologizing. He stays calm and is really understanding but I feel out of control. At least I am not alone.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I laugh hysterically for no reason. I am 39 weeks pregnant and yesterday was on my feet a little too long. My feet and ankles swelled up to epic proportions and all I could do was laugh at them. For an hour. I think my husband thinks I am losing it but would rather see me laughing than breaking down into tears.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm on the bandwagon of totally spontaneous emotions! I am wondering however, if it's normal to hate being pregnant? I am 8 weeks along, and I am so nauseated and sick all day everyday that I just cry and hate the fact that I am pregnant right now. I know it's all worth it in the end, but I just want this horrible sick feeling to go away...is it wrong of me to think like that?

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I am now 38 weeks pregnant and my husband still tells everyone how proud he is of me for being such a "good sport" through this whole pregnancy. The first thing I did that I think really helped was that I call him on my way home from work and talk to him about how my day/mood is (tired, grumpy, achy, irritated, etc), you go through so many mood swings in a day that you can't expect him to just know how you're feeling, and if he has a heads up before you get home about your mood he will be better prepared to help you through it. Also, when ever I do go off the deep end (crying jag, nagging fit or displaced frustration) I try to remind myself to come back to him after I have returned to sane and talk to him about it, sometimes its hard to suck it up and admit you were a little out of line or a little pregs emotional, but it can make the world of difference in the end if the two of you aren't ready to kill each other before you even get to your ninth month.

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I'm still not sure if I'm pregnant (take the test in 2 days!), but good grief, am I on the emotional roller coaster! The other day I was driving and saw a New Orleans restaurant that advertised beighnets (a kind of fried pastry). Next thought: remembering my dad making beignets on Saturday mornings. Next thought: OMG I love my dad and I miss him so much (I see him at least a month and talk to him on the phone all the time). I went from completely fine, talking to my husband about nothing in particular, to being on the verge of tears in like a nanosecond!! And then half a block later I was completely fine again. What the heck!!!! Not normal!!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I am totally on the emotional rollercoaster. 3 days before my BFP, I was being yelled at by a customer. Out of nowhere I yelled right back at him, told him he wasn't listening to me (3 times), and actually hung up the phone on him. In the 7 years I've been at my job, I've never, EVER, yelled at someone or thought that it was ever appropriate to do so. Once I saw my BFP, it made complete sense. I haven't told my coworkers that I'm pregnant yet, and they just think the customer must have done something really out of line. I feel bad, but what can I do?

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I am so thankful to know that I am not going insane. I am incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful husband to deal with my drastic mood swings! I will get frustrated and just start crying my eyes out and then I'll laugh at something funny a moment later. I also feel horrible because I've been SOO irritable lately and it takes basically nothing to make me grouchy. I hope that part calms down a little bit after the first trimester is over. I'm 7 weeks right now... Wish us luck! haha just don't watch a commercial for an animal shelter, I don't even have to be prego for that to make me cry and I'm a tough cookie. Will be avoiding those for the rest of the year... Good luck to everyone (and their significant others)!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

I can't say that I'm being super emotional being that I'm only into my 8th week I'm sure it will come. I have noticed that I really want nothing to do with my husband, he wants to cuddle and hold me and really I just want to be left alone. I'm not sure what this stems from but I really hope that it goes away fast..

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Thank god someone else feels as crazy as I do! I asked a good friend today (who has a 1 month old) if she ever got depressed or really annoyed with her husband while prego and she acted like I needed psychological help, stating that she was the happiest shes ever been while pregnant!!! It made me want to strangle her but that would prove her point that I need help. UGH! Im so miserable! I have been screaming at everyone, especially my husband, and I have the worst anxiety. I havent slept in a week!! I really hope this ends soon or I might end up a single mom!!!!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

Crying spells have been an every day things for me. I feel like a kid throwing a temper tantrum, but other then that I've noticed I've been unordinarily happy. My hubby is curious, but not questioning it. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to cuddle or BD, but he's been getting the GOOD treatment. He keeps saying hopefully I will stay this way (but I'm only 4 weeks).

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

The crying can be so overwhelming. I was crying so hard the other night, and now I can't even remember why. I think it was because my pants didn't fit and the ones I had ordered from Motherhood didn't arrive. Poor DH tries to hug and comfort me, but when I'm crying hysterically and my face is red and puffy I just need to be alone for a little while!!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

So I just found out I'm expecting and the 1st sign of being pregnant was my raging hormones. I'm already a very sensitive and emotional person but I knew there was more going on. It led to an argument with my husband over something so stupid but I knew I had to get myself checked and sure enough I just found out I'm expecting and now my husband and I put that argument to rest and couldn't be more ecstatic!!!

Q&A: Emotions during pregnancy?

My hormones were usually out of control whenever I was PMSing before. When we found out I was pregnant my husband asked me "so, do you promise to TRY to be nice to me?" I said "If I tell you to leave me the F alone will you promise to leave me the F alone?" I'm glad we got that understanding out of the way early :)
