Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

What are the guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy? I want to eat right... but what does that really mean?

Re: What are the guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy? I want to eat right... but what does that really mean?

The Bump Expert

Good nutrition during pregnancy is essential --the nutrients you give your body are the building blocks of strong, healthy growth for baby. During the next nine months, you'll need about 300 more calories perday than usual. The best way to get these in is by sneaking in two or three healthy snacks between three small meals. Eating frequent small meals (as opposed to a few large meals separated by long period without calories or nutrients) help baby get maximum benefit from what you eat. Here are a few more ways to give baby a healthy start (and keep yourself comfortable):

[  ] Drink eight to ten glasses (80-100 oz) of water each day

[  ] Pick fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which are healthy and prevent constipation

[  ] Eat high iron foods such as liver, shellfish, lean meat, poultry, fish, dried beans, green leafy vegetables and whole graincereals and breads

[  ] Choose whole grains over sugar cereals and whitebread

] Avoid excessive caffeine (found in most sodas, coffee, tea, chocolate)

[  ] Don't skip meals -- even if you don't feelhungry, baby needs the nourishment

[  ] Use our prenatal nutrition checklist to keep track of food groups and servings every day

re: Q: Eating for Two?

So then what are the GOOD types of fish to eat during pregnancy? My mom makes fish soup every year for Christmas and I want to give her some recommendations!

montvamj | December 16 , 2007 3:08 PM

re: Q: Eating for Two?

My doctor told me I could have one serving of seafood a week, but not to exceed that. She said as long as that's all I'm having, the mercury intake from the fish will be so minimal that it wouldn't hurt the baby. So you should be ok with whatever your mom normally puts in her soup, as long as you don't overindulge and don't have any other fish that week.

My Dr. told me I could eat whatever I want to but that I should have 6 small meals instead of 3 big meals over the course of the day.

re: Q: Eating for two?

can i eat shrimp? i see different things some say yes some say no does anyone know if it is ok? also how do i get my ticker to saty up on messsage?

CHAPPYWIFE | October 10 , 2008 4:57 PM

re: Q: Eating for two?

I think eating shrimp is fine. As far as fish goes, new studies that I have seen have shown that the benefit you receive from the oemga-3s in the fish far outweigh the chance of too much mercury-- but this depends on the type of fish you have. Smaller fish like salmon and trout are safer, but bigger fish like tuna can have more mercury. And with the diet in general, at our birthing center we tell all our moms to try and get 80-100 grams of protein a day and stay away from sugar.

re: Q: Eating for two?

I've always heard that you shouldn't eat a lot of liver, because it has so much vitamin A in it .

re: Q: Eating for two?

Hi! It’s important that we understand the geniuses of our concern about mercury contaminated fish before we make a determination for ourselves and our children. Mercury is emitted into the environment through several processes, including fossil fuel burning. When it attaches to the water vapors from, for instance, a coal-fired power plant, it rises into the atmosphere and returns to earth as rain. The rain is absorbed by plants which are eaten by small animals that are eaten by larger animals. Mercury (particularly methylmercury – the kind that goes through the cycle I just wrote about) is called bio-persistent. Meaning it lasts in the environment and very few creatures are equipped to metabolize it (break it down). So, when you select fish to eat, because we know fish are good for us and our children, try to select fish with a lower likelihood of mercury accumulation. This means that a fish’s lifespan is more important that it’s size because a short-lived species is less likely to have eaten as much matter with mercury in it. The Environmental Protection Agency has a webpage to help you navigate this little mess… I hope it helps. I used to work in a job that dealt with this quite frequently, so feel free to ask more questions. I think it is really important that we all understand this for us and our children. The EPA website is: http://epa.gov/mercury/advisories.htm

Ok, I'm almost 5 weeks and I am absolutely revenous. I feel hungry all the time and it's like no matter how much I eat I still feel shaky. Is this normal or do I need to be concerned about this?

I can't eat the normal sized meals I used to eat. I get a sick overstuffed feeling. Before I could eat a whole foot long at Subway. Now I can barely eat the 6 inch.

I'm nearing 7 weeks - I'm constantly hungry, no real vomiting, just that nauseas feeling . . . but I am having a hard time keeping away from the not so healthy treats.

re: Q: Eating for two?

I'm 8+ weeks and I cant finish a regular meal either. I'm also having alot of difficulty getting my water in. I stay nauseated, except during meals but if I eat or drink too much I do vomit. I used to eat big meals & drink over 80 oz but week 5 changed that! I now eat 5-7 meals a day and chew on celery or ice between meals.

re: Q: Eating for two?

I seem to have no appetite at all. Surely eating less than I was before. I'm too tired to eat lately. Hopefully the cravings will start so something will sound appetizing. Any recommendations?

re: Q: Eating for two?

I have been having very bad heartburn. No nausea, and not really hungry either; funny thing though, once I start eating I realize that I am hungry, but then I get full so quickly that I stop eating. Odd how our bodies work. Tums for the heartburn seem to work, but then I get really burpy (gross!) .

re: Q: Eating for two?

I'm 7 weeks. Everyone thought I was crazy because I would get so full so quickly! I would take a couple of bites and feel like I had just been through a buffet line a few times. Ugg. . . Glad to know I'm not the only one!

re: Q: Eating for two?

I understand the extra 300 calories per day while pregnant. However, my pregnancy was a little unexpected and I was dieting and exercising. I would limit my caloric intake to 1500 calories a day. The books say that a non dieting woman should normally intake 2200 cal per day and if you add the 300 to that, I am seeing that I should be taking in 2500 calories per day. Is this right? I'm 5'5" and I am overweight at 168 lbs. What caloric number should I be focusing on during this pregnancy?

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I was sick for a few weeks from about week 7 until week 9. I tried looking at caloric intake, which I've never done in my life, but right now in week 10, I could care less about a calorie and whether I get enough, I just want to eat period! I'm still not at the point where I can eat meals like I used to. I will say that I am doing much better, about a weekend ago, we had pancakes, I took 2 or 3 bites and ate my fruit, this past weekend, I left about 3 or 4 bites of pancake on my plate. I've lost weight...I don't know if it's due to my husband sprinkling a little flax seed on my veggies and me living in the bathroom this morning or what. I just want everything to be ok.

I was working out and counting my calories all last year preparing to be at a good weight for my wedding last May. Then let it go a little after the honeymoon and found out I was pregnant. Big surprise! So I asked the doctor about how many calories to take in and she discouraged me from counting calories and said instead to eat "healthy" and to eat 5-6 times a day. I do better with counting calories but am trying to focus on what I eat now. She also said my current excercise plan wouldn't work either because I used resistance machines which is like lifting weights and she said not to do that anymore. I feel a little lost!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

If you are wary about eating fish during your pregnancy because of the mercury levels, but still want to get the benefit of the omega 3's, try flax seed. You can sprinkle ground flax seed on cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. and get the same benefit as eating fish.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am having the problem of not being hungry, but forcing myself to eat. I am scared to lose weight, but have never had the problem of putting it on, so I need to be careful with that too. I am trying to stay within a normal range, but I don't know what that is because I was dieting before I found out I was pregnant, so I am all sorts of confused.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I'm a highly certified personal trainer, and pregnant with my 2nd right now. The basic guidlines are that you should consume an extra 300 calories a day. East 6 small meals a day, spaced about 3 hours apart, and make sure that your meals contain both protein and carbohydrates as it will hold you over longer, keep your sugar from dropping (fainters), and also keep you from gaining too much weight. always add lots of veggies to your meals as they contain lots of needed fiber that will not only keep your insulin and sugar levels from spiking and dropping (causing you to faint) but also help with weight management. Because your blood volume will increase so much by the end of your pregnancy, you will need to drink up to a gallon of water a day. now, just because you used to eat 2500 calories a day doesnt mean you can or should add 300 extra calories to that. you should add 300 calories to the amount of calories you should have been eating before the pregnancy. a good rule of thumb is to multiply a healthy body weight for your height and age by 16, and then add 300 calories to that. ex: i'm 5'4. a good weight for me is 120. so i multiply 120 by 16 which equals 1920, and then ad 300 calories to that. this will help you get all the calories and nutrients that you and your baby need, while saving you the complications of too much weight gain. remember, everybody is different. listen to your body. if this doesnt work for you, then try something else. everybody's body responds differently to different things. i used this formula with my first baby, and shes as healthy as can be. i had a natural, uncomplicated, and easy delivery. if you have any questions, i'm more than happy to help. :)

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Ugh...I'm 14 weeks and still can't seem to hold anything down! I've lost 12 pounds. My Dr gave me some Zofran (which is GREAT, but only lasts 4 hours and can only be taken once per day) and told me not to worry about nutrition, but to just eat whatever sounds good to me that I think I can hold down. I feel so bad, because I was a pretty healthy eater before I got pregnant, but all I seem to be able to eat is cereal, ice cream, rice and beans, plain pasta and McDonald's french fries. Fruit, vegetables, meat, and even the smell of coffee makes me so sick! They said the baby is okay and growing as normal, but I am still worried we aren't getting the nutrients we need. Ugh. I am hoping things will get better since my 2nd trimester is starting.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Remember, when we here the phrase "eating for two" we're talking about you and a very tiny person, not two adults. You only need about 300 more calories a day, not double your normal amount!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am extremely early in on my 3rd pregnancy. While reading through this I saw many women saying they weren't hungry or couldn't eat protein. My 2nd pregnancy I had quite a few fainting spells because I couldn't handle eating much first thing in the morning. I started getting the Carnation breakfast powder and adding it to milk. It is very high in protein. It did the trick for me in the mornings. I got to where I would add a banana to it too and make a yummy morning drink. Hope this trick helps.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

A little bit of cottage cheese on wheat toast saved me during my first pregnancy, it was one of the things I could consistently eat. I was told by a friend that protein in the morning is helpful to combat morning sickness.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

first pregnancy here........ all i want to eat are heavy filling foods. and its weird though alot of the foods i want to eat are white, i do tend to substitue them for whole grains bread, eat a lot of all bran fiber cereal with two kinds of fruit, etc. and since i am on my feet all day at work, i bring a bagged lunch of healthy and non healthy snacks. hehe just as long as you add in your fruits and veggies (you definitely need the fiber and vitamins) you should be fine.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I believe you can eat anything with limitations. For example, you don't eat chocolate every day and have a cup of coffee as well. Don't cut out fish, just make sure its properly cooked and not bottom feeders.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I want to eat ALL of the time. I too crave plain (white) bagels and just things that are bad. Fruit sounds nasty veggies sound ok to me but most things I usually like sound so gross, it flips my stomache just thinking about it!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

My doctor gave me a whole list of things to eat and not eat. Number one on the list to NOT eat is shellfish. It's got higher levels of bacteria that can build up in your system and harm your baby. And she also said to avoid fresh water fish, which tends to have higher levels of mercury.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I'm 10 wks and I am NEVER hungry. My husband keeps trying to "force" food on me. If I'm eating less often than I should be, what is the MOST important foods that I need to be eatinng?

mommytobe03 | January 14 , 2010 2:00 PM

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am at my 9th week and my stomach will only handle bland foods. I have seen myself eating more in the mornings. I use to not be a big breakfast eater, but since I have been pregnant scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and cinnamon toast works. Other days I will eat oatmeal, yogurt, waffles, and sometimes pancakes or bisquits. I still find myself snaking through out the day and if I don't eat I begin to feel nauseus. One of the best meals I have ate was fish tacos not spicy at all. Weird but it settle really well. Spicy foods don't like my stomach at all so word of advice I would stay away.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Im happy to hear that I am not alone. I haven't ate hardly anything the last 6 weeks. Everything absolutely everything sounds and just isnt appealing and when I try to force my self to eat something I would normally like its not appetizing at all. Not much vomiting Im just nauseous all the time. Im 11weeks and I have lost 15-20lbs and im worried. Hopefully it will get better now that im almost in my second trimester and I will start craving foods I cant wait to be able to eat again I miss food. lol

Dancer86 | January 28 , 2010 9:03 PM

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

This is my second pregnancy and I'm 11 weeks and can hardly eat anything besides cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese, crackers and anything beef. This is the same thing that occurred during my 1st pregnancy and my dr says the baby will take what ever nutrients it needs from your body whether you eat or not. In other words, it's like an alien it is going to be fed regardless, you may lose weight on the other hand. Right around my 4th month of pregnancy with my first, my appetite kicked in and I couldn't stop eating and food actually tasted good and I gained all the weight I needed too plus some. So don't worry too much if you are not able to eat balanced meals or much of anything at first, eat what you can, you will make up for it when the morning sickness subsides.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Eesh, just reading all of this is making me so naseous. I am 8 weeks pregnant and just the idea of food makes me want to run to the bathroom. My poor husband generally cooks dinner at night because he gets home first, and I generally have to turn him down every night because the idea of most foods make me naseous. I used to LOVE Buffalo Wild Wings mild wings.. but now, the idea of chicken.. Ugh.. let's not even go there. If it weren't for Jello Vanilla and Chocolate swirl pudding, I would probably have not eaten a thing. The strange thing is, I've only been ACTUALLY sick one time. But, it never fails throughout the day if I start thinking about food.. I get sick. Which makes it hard to sit at work and think about lunch and dinner.. :( I can't wait until this gets better so I have a normal appetite again.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I wouldnt worry to much ladies, the doctors are right when they say the baby will be fed regardless if you eat. I lost 20 lbs my first 18 weeks, I'm now at 22 and eat like crazy and have gained it all back. Yes you feel guilty for not wanting to eat, and husbands dont help, but its not forever!
