Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

What are the guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy? I want to eat right... but what does that really mean?

Re: What are the guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy? I want to eat right... but what does that really mean?

The Bump Expert

Good nutrition during pregnancy is essential --the nutrients you give your body are the building blocks of strong, healthy growth for baby. During the next nine months, you'll need about 300 more calories perday than usual. The best way to get these in is by sneaking in two or three healthy snacks between three small meals. Eating frequent small meals (as opposed to a few large meals separated by long period without calories or nutrients) help baby get maximum benefit from what you eat. Here are a few more ways to give baby a healthy start (and keep yourself comfortable):

[ ] Drink eight to ten glasses (80-100 oz) of water each day

[ ] Pick fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which are healthy and prevent constipation

[ ] Eat high iron foods such as liver, shellfish, lean meat, poultry, fish, dried beans, green leafy vegetables and whole graincereals and breads

[ ] Choose whole grains over sugar cereals and whitebread

[ ] Avoid excessive caffeine (found in most sodas, coffee, tea, chocolate)

[ ] Don't skip meals -- even if you don't feelhungry, baby needs the nourishment

[ ] Use our prenatal nutrition checklist to keep track of food groups and servings every day

re: Q: Eating for Two?

So then what are the GOOD types of fish to eat during pregnancy? My mom makes fish soup every year for Christmas and I want to give her some recommendations!

montvamj | December 16 , 2007 3:08 PM

re: Q: Eating for Two?

My doctor told me I could have one serving of seafood a week, but not to exceed that. She said as long as that's all I'm having, the mercury intake from the fish will be so minimal that it wouldn't hurt the baby. So you should be ok with whatever your mom normally puts in her soup, as long as you don't overindulge and don't have any other fish that week.

can i eat shrimp? i see different things some say yes some say no does anyone know if it is ok? also how do i get my ticker to saty up on messsage?

CHAPPYWIFE | October 10 , 2008 4:57 PM

re: Q: Eating for two?

I think eating shrimp is fine. As far as fish goes, new studies that I have seen have shown that the benefit you receive from the oemga-3s in the fish far outweigh the chance of too much mercury-- but this depends on the type of fish you have. Smaller fish like salmon and trout are safer, but bigger fish like tuna can have more mercury. And with the diet in general, at our birthing center we tell all our moms to try and get 80-100 grams of protein a day and stay away from sugar.

re: Q: Eating for two?

I've always heard that you shouldn't eat a lot of liver, because it has so much vitamin A in it .

re: Q: Eating for two?

Hi! It’s important that we understand the geniuses of our concern about mercury contaminated fish before we make a determination for ourselves and our children. Mercury is emitted into the environment through several processes, including fossil fuel burning. When it attaches to the water vapors from, for instance, a coal-fired power plant, it rises into the atmosphere and returns to earth as rain. The rain is absorbed by plants which are eaten by small animals that are eaten by larger animals. Mercury (particularly methylmercury – the kind that goes through the cycle I just wrote about) is called bio-persistent. Meaning it lasts in the environment and very few creatures are equipped to metabolize it (break it down). So, when you select fish to eat, because we know fish are good for us and our children, try to select fish with a lower likelihood of mercury accumulation. This means that a fish’s lifespan is more important that it’s size because a short-lived species is less likely to have eaten as much matter with mercury in it. The Environmental Protection Agency has a webpage to help you navigate this little mess… I hope it helps. I used to work in a job that dealt with this quite frequently, so feel free to ask more questions. I think it is really important that we all understand this for us and our children. The EPA website is: http://epa.gov/mercury/advisories.htm

I'm 8+ weeks and I cant finish a regular meal either. I'm also having alot of difficulty getting my water in. I stay nauseated, except during meals but if I eat or drink too much I do vomit. I used to eat big meals & drink over 80 oz but week 5 changed that! I now eat 5-7 meals a day and chew on celery or ice between meals.

I have been having very bad heartburn. No nausea, and not really hungry either; funny thing though, once I start eating I realize that I am hungry, but then I get full so quickly that I stop eating. Odd how our bodies work. Tums for the heartburn seem to work, but then I get really burpy (gross!) .

re: Q: Eating for two?

I understand the extra 300 calories per day while pregnant. However, my pregnancy was a little unexpected and I was dieting and exercising. I would limit my caloric intake to 1500 calories a day. The books say that a non dieting woman should normally intake 2200 cal per day and if you add the 300 to that, I am seeing that I should be taking in 2500 calories per day. Is this right? I'm 5'5" and I am overweight at 168 lbs. What caloric number should I be focusing on during this pregnancy?

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I was sick for a few weeks from about week 7 until week 9. I tried looking at caloric intake, which I've never done in my life, but right now in week 10, I could care less about a calorie and whether I get enough, I just want to eat period! I'm still not at the point where I can eat meals like I used to. I will say that I am doing much better, about a weekend ago, we had pancakes, I took 2 or 3 bites and ate my fruit, this past weekend, I left about 3 or 4 bites of pancake on my plate. I've lost weight...I don't know if it's due to my husband sprinkling a little flax seed on my veggies and me living in the bathroom this morning or what. I just want everything to be ok.

I was working out and counting my calories all last year preparing to be at a good weight for my wedding last May. Then let it go a little after the honeymoon and found out I was pregnant. Big surprise! So I asked the doctor about how many calories to take in and she discouraged me from counting calories and said instead to eat "healthy" and to eat 5-6 times a day. I do better with counting calories but am trying to focus on what I eat now. She also said my current excercise plan wouldn't work either because I used resistance machines which is like lifting weights and she said not to do that anymore. I feel a little lost!

If you are wary about eating fish during your pregnancy because of the mercury levels, but still want to get the benefit of the omega 3's, try flax seed. You can sprinkle ground flax seed on cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. and get the same benefit as eating fish.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I'm a highly certified personal trainer, and pregnant with my 2nd right now. The basic guidlines are that you should consume an extra 300 calories a day. East 6 small meals a day, spaced about 3 hours apart, and make sure that your meals contain both protein and carbohydrates as it will hold you over longer, keep your sugar from dropping (fainters), and also keep you from gaining too much weight. always add lots of veggies to your meals as they contain lots of needed fiber that will not only keep your insulin and sugar levels from spiking and dropping (causing you to faint) but also help with weight management. Because your blood volume will increase so much by the end of your pregnancy, you will need to drink up to a gallon of water a day. now, just because you used to eat 2500 calories a day doesnt mean you can or should add 300 extra calories to that. you should add 300 calories to the amount of calories you should have been eating before the pregnancy. a good rule of thumb is to multiply a healthy body weight for your height and age by 16, and then add 300 calories to that. ex: i'm 5'4. a good weight for me is 120. so i multiply 120 by 16 which equals 1920, and then ad 300 calories to that. this will help you get all the calories and nutrients that you and your baby need, while saving you the complications of too much weight gain. remember, everybody is different. listen to your body. if this doesnt work for you, then try something else. everybody's body responds differently to different things. i used this formula with my first baby, and shes as healthy as can be. i had a natural, uncomplicated, and easy delivery. if you have any questions, i'm more than happy to help. :)

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Ugh...I'm 14 weeks and still can't seem to hold anything down! I've lost 12 pounds. My Dr gave me some Zofran (which is GREAT, but only lasts 4 hours and can only be taken once per day) and told me not to worry about nutrition, but to just eat whatever sounds good to me that I think I can hold down. I feel so bad, because I was a pretty healthy eater before I got pregnant, but all I seem to be able to eat is cereal, ice cream, rice and beans, plain pasta and McDonald's french fries. Fruit, vegetables, meat, and even the smell of coffee makes me so sick! They said the baby is okay and growing as normal, but I am still worried we aren't getting the nutrients we need. Ugh. I am hoping things will get better since my 2nd trimester is starting.

Remember, when we here the phrase "eating for two" we're talking about you and a very tiny person, not two adults. You only need about 300 more calories a day, not double your normal amount!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am extremely early in on my 3rd pregnancy. While reading through this I saw many women saying they weren't hungry or couldn't eat protein. My 2nd pregnancy I had quite a few fainting spells because I couldn't handle eating much first thing in the morning. I started getting the Carnation breakfast powder and adding it to milk. It is very high in protein. It did the trick for me in the mornings. I got to where I would add a banana to it too and make a yummy morning drink. Hope this trick helps.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

first pregnancy here........ all i want to eat are heavy filling foods. and its weird though alot of the foods i want to eat are white, i do tend to substitue them for whole grains bread, eat a lot of all bran fiber cereal with two kinds of fruit, etc. and since i am on my feet all day at work, i bring a bagged lunch of healthy and non healthy snacks. hehe just as long as you add in your fruits and veggies (you definitely need the fiber and vitamins) you should be fine.

I believe you can eat anything with limitations. For example, you don't eat chocolate every day and have a cup of coffee as well. Don't cut out fish, just make sure its properly cooked and not bottom feeders.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

My doctor gave me a whole list of things to eat and not eat. Number one on the list to NOT eat is shellfish. It's got higher levels of bacteria that can build up in your system and harm your baby. And she also said to avoid fresh water fish, which tends to have higher levels of mercury.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am at my 9th week and my stomach will only handle bland foods. I have seen myself eating more in the mornings. I use to not be a big breakfast eater, but since I have been pregnant scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, and cinnamon toast works. Other days I will eat oatmeal, yogurt, waffles, and sometimes pancakes or bisquits. I still find myself snaking through out the day and if I don't eat I begin to feel nauseus. One of the best meals I have ate was fish tacos not spicy at all. Weird but it settle really well. Spicy foods don't like my stomach at all so word of advice I would stay away.

Im happy to hear that I am not alone. I haven't ate hardly anything the last 6 weeks. Everything absolutely everything sounds and just isnt appealing and when I try to force my self to eat something I would normally like its not appetizing at all. Not much vomiting Im just nauseous all the time. Im 11weeks and I have lost 15-20lbs and im worried. Hopefully it will get better now that im almost in my second trimester and I will start craving foods I cant wait to be able to eat again I miss food. lol

Dancer86 | January 28 , 2010 9:03 PM

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

This is my second pregnancy and I'm 11 weeks and can hardly eat anything besides cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese, crackers and anything beef. This is the same thing that occurred during my 1st pregnancy and my dr says the baby will take what ever nutrients it needs from your body whether you eat or not. In other words, it's like an alien it is going to be fed regardless, you may lose weight on the other hand. Right around my 4th month of pregnancy with my first, my appetite kicked in and I couldn't stop eating and food actually tasted good and I gained all the weight I needed too plus some. So don't worry too much if you are not able to eat balanced meals or much of anything at first, eat what you can, you will make up for it when the morning sickness subsides.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Eesh, just reading all of this is making me so naseous. I am 8 weeks pregnant and just the idea of food makes me want to run to the bathroom. My poor husband generally cooks dinner at night because he gets home first, and I generally have to turn him down every night because the idea of most foods make me naseous. I used to LOVE Buffalo Wild Wings mild wings.. but now, the idea of chicken.. Ugh.. let's not even go there. If it weren't for Jello Vanilla and Chocolate swirl pudding, I would probably have not eaten a thing. The strange thing is, I've only been ACTUALLY sick one time. But, it never fails throughout the day if I start thinking about food.. I get sick. Which makes it hard to sit at work and think about lunch and dinner.. :( I can't wait until this gets better so I have a normal appetite again.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I am at 18 weeks & I had major aversions to most foods. I loved cooking until weeks 4-12 - then I couldn't stand the thought of it!! Matt would cook or we would eat out. I could handle foods that others prepared. I also blended frozen fruit, organic protien powder and 2% milk into smoothies - easy on the stomach and nutritious! During your first few weeks, don't over-worry about the baby's nutrients if you feel sick, just eat the foods you can stomach. In the second trimester, you will feel tons better and can better manage proper nutrients. It helps to keep a food calendar on your fridge or on your phone. Mark off how many servings of fruit, protien, veggies, dairy, legumes, etc you eat. At the end of the day, have a snack of whatever group you're lacking. If you've fulfilled everything, treat yourself! I usually give in (just a little) to my cravings because if I eat a couple of cookies every evening with a glass of milk, it prevents me from eating a whole box for lunch one day.

Kittle309 - as with anything, just take the v8 in moderation. Keep in mind the amount of sodium it has. Also, I made the mistake of buying v8 Fusion and only afterward did I find out that it has sucralose, which is an artificial sweetener - just thought you should know because some people aren't comfortable with artificial ingredients.

My husband is appalled that i am even suggesting it (because he says it is a filter for everything bad in the body of an animal) but i am thinking it has a lot of iron and would actually be good to eat (besides the fact that i am craving it...). Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I'm just over the four week hump (just found out this weekend), and today the need for smaller, constant meals hit. Some of my favorite foods are no longer so tasty -- I hope that goes away soon. I'm hoping that keeping better-hydrated will help.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Oh, I feel for you ladies in your 1st trimester. So glad that is over!! I'm 30 weeks now but was sick from week 4 to week 17... yes, I said 17. The doctor said oh, it goes away by week 12, then it was 14, and I still had it. Everyone is different. I was completely miserable and tried everything. Ginger, the seabands, etc. etc. The thing that helped me was Unisom at night and B6 the next morning. Look it up or ask your doctor, both are safe. Hope you all get over it soon.

I am 10 weeks along and am so nauseous all the time. I don't eat any meat bread or veggies at all because it makes me sick. I've also quit taking my vitamins, they make the nausea ten times worse and they make me vomit. really gardettos are the only thing that I'm eating most of the time. I haven't been too concerned up until now but I'm starting to worry.

I am 10 weeks and feel sooo small!! i really feel like I'm not eating enough. My fiancee and mother in law tries to make me eat because I've lost weight. My stomach was showing a bit and now it looks like I'm getting smaller. I try to eat all day but most of the time I don't feel like it. I wonder if the more I eat the faster the baby grow?

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

My diet changed dramatically a few months ago. I was eating anything people would ask me to try. I fell in love with sushi...I am now 6 weeks pregnant and it is so hard to resist all the new found foods. The only real problem i am having with eating is that I am craving everything but can only eat small portions at a time. I now eat 1/4th of what i used to eat and feel super full. I eat about six small portions a day with snacks between.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I understand you aren't supposed to eat a lot of fish because of mercury, but for some reason it's all I've been craving. And weird fish too, like sardines and anchovies! Any thoughts on why? I try to focus the majority of my meals around vegetables and a serving of lean of protien. It's hard though when I'm ravenous. I have to eat a lot of veggies to feel full.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

rcollier, that seems odd to me. Every pregnancy is different, but if you're constantly shaky, you should definitely mention that to your doctor. Your blood sugar might be out of whack, or you might have some other deficiency that will end up being an easy fix. For some reason, my potassium runs low when I'm pregnant, but is fine otherwise. I'm almost 14 weeks and am just now starting to get my appetite back, but again, every pregnancy is unique (just like every baby), so I wouldn't worry if you don't follow all of the norms. Just watch for bleeding, severe pains, etc. and relax and do your best. :-)

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I'm a bit heavier without being pregnant and my doctor wanted me to try and avoid gaining weight. It was inevitable that I would gain, but 65lbs was just not acceptable (my mother gained 65lbs in her first pregnancy, which was me! ^^) I'm now on week 37 and I've only gained 13 pounds. If you find yourself always hungry... in my first trimester I was starving, and now in my last month I'm even hungrier! I've found that carrots, cheese, crackers, and light and fit strawberry yogurt really hit the spot! I have to really suggest the yogurt as a substitute for extra sweet deserts or a bag of chips as a snack. It's super tasty and I don't like yogurt regularly, but the Light and Fit tastes super good and is one of the healthiest yogurts out there. Also, with water, I bought a 48 ounce refillable water bottle and fill it to the top right before work starts. I find that sipping it down through a straw helps me drink quicker and I'm able to get down two full bottles in an 8 hours work day without even thinking about it. That's your 8 glasses right there! I just drink down one full bottle before lunch, full it up for lunch, and drink the rest until it's time to clock out. It makes measuring much easier.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I've never been a big eater, but now I'm hungry all the time. So I eat like a Hobbit - breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. I'm also drinking a lot of water since I'm always thirsty. I guess my body is just telling me what I need. So when I have to eat, I try to eat something healthy - although I look forward to having bizarre cravings :)

To JOYWINTERS, though I am not a vegetarian, my brother and sister-in-law are vegans and happen to be a little over 3 months prego. They are doing fine. They read up on what they should eat and what is needed to have a healthy pregnancy with a vegetarian lifestyle. Do some research (i.e. check books out from the library written by authorities on the subject) and please discuss this with your doctor! you can have a healthy pregnancy. Good luck!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I just took the at-home pregnancy test 4 days ago but have probably been pregnant for a couple of weeks or so. Very excited, but also a bit nervous! I have been eating LOTS of fruits and veggies and find that I only eat them if I prepare them ahead of time and take them to work with me. I'm 5'4" and only 108 pounds and have never been able to gain weight no matter how much I eat... Though I'm eating healthy food, I'm thinking that I may need to resort to milkshakes (this is what my grandmother did!) to put on the extra pounds. Any suggestions for getting more calories while trying to eat healthy??

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Hi, I'm just about at week 9 of my first, and I wanted to share a tip. I don't know if it's just me, but it's been a lifesaver. I was having crazy intense nausea and the most helpful thing I've found has been drinking a ton of water. Now I am drinking water pretty much at all times. Once my body became more hydrated, the morning sickness got a lot less severe. Right at first the water contributed to the nausea, but once I had more in me, everything got DRASTICALLY better. It even made my cravings and revulsion from certain foods less psycho!

bridetobe2808 ~ They say not to eat the lunch meat due to lysteria bacteria. You can still have lunch meat but make sure it is well heated. For a while I could only eat SMALL meals, and only healthy foods. I kept crackers and a large glass of water by the bed at night so if i woke up I would eat just one or two crackers and drink water, it helped me not get sick too! Now when I am not hungry I drink 100% fruit and veggie drinks found (when ever I shop) near produce. They are amazing and so healthy! I can eat more now that I am 27 weeks too, but eating healthy is getting hard when I am to tired to cook.

I'm 5'7' and 135 lbs. I was dieting before I got pregnant, so my calories were already down to 1200 - 1500 daily. I knew adding 300 calories to that would still not be enough. I asked my doctor today what my calories should be and she said between 2000 - 2200. We decided on 2000 calories daily for now - I'm at 8 weeks.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Eating up to six small meals a day can be a benefit to mommy and baby. When I say small I mean no more than a fist size amount. You can get in all your nutrients and vitamins in these small servings and still manage to feed those cravings. Just make sure that you don't over indulge. The old eating for two myth that says you can eat whatever you want because your pregnant can come back to bite you in a BIG way. Every woman is different. Some women have a higher metabolism and others do not. If you're eating these small meals through out the day you are giving your body a chance to digest better and you're not throwing your metabolism off. Let me just add this: Exercise is a key ingredient to keeping your sanity during the long months ahead. (Yes, that means even after the baby.) You don't have to go running. Just find a routine that works for you and stick to it. - from a mom of three with one on the way

Well you have to eat natural and careful not to get too much fat. You have to be careful not to get anorexic because in 30% of the pregnancy cases the mother gets anorexic. I recommend that after you give birth you should get an eating disorder treatment to get back on the right track. I wish you good luck and visit a doctor if the heartburns continue.

It needs to be cleaned and deveined properly and thoroughly. When I prepare shrimp at home now that I am pregnant I butterfly the shrimp to devein and I completely cut off the tail and the meat closest to the tail. Hope this helps. Oh and also to be on the safe side do not have seafood more than twice a week.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I have a friend that had some problems during her pregnancy! She followed a guideline that drastically changed her eating habits and she had some problems. After taking her to a dual diagnosis rehab center the doctors figured out that she was allergic to some food that she had never eaten up until then. Future moms should be very careful about stuff like this.

NeilKirchoff | November 14 , 2011 2:52 AM

I'll have to agree with Neil! You have to eat healthy but you should be really careful if you drastically change your eating habits. I have a friend in a holistic rehab Florida center and she told me that when she was pregnant all the doctors that she visited told her the same thing: eat healthy but watch your reactions to the new kind of food.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

The first week I found out I was eating super healthy, nothing but fruit and veggies and felt great. But, once the morning sickness set in the smell of cooking food just makes me gag. Almost everything I think might sound good, starts looking very un-appetizing after a few bites. The only things I can really stomach now, unfortunately, are breads, sweets, and crackers...all of which have basically no nutritional value, i feel nasty that i am gaining weight and not enjoying anything I eat...I guess this is normal?

shelbyn1cole | November 26 , 2011 10:57 PM

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

Well Shelby you should enjoy the food that you eat! I don't think it is normal to have a incredible appetite and not like the food after a few bites. When my wife was pregnant she had something similar and I had to make her take a dual diagnosis but the doctors said nothing was wrong. After 2-3 weeks she got back to normal and ate everything in her way.

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

My Ob/Gyn says fish and even sushi is fine if it is prepared properly! The FDA fed us more of a myth about mercury poisoning and eating fish is very healthy for your baby who needs the fish oils for brain development. I was so relieved because I love fish! I live in Hawaii so the fish is very fresh generally. Check with your doc about local fish options and avoid any that may come from polluted waters or a dirty restaurant... otherwise, eat fish!. My Dr. is very well respected, studied at Harvard and actually is a consultant to the FDA.

I'm 11 weeks and I want to know if it is safe to use Splenda. I've used it all my life but I'm worried it will hurt the baby somehow... Any info that you guys can share? Good luck to all of you!

Q&A: Eating right during pregnancy?

I read this article and I think most of these ideas are great. Also if you want to have sex in your first weeks you should treat yourself just in case against easy to get diseases like candida! I recommend Threelac and I will tell you why: a friend of mine decided she wants to "get it on" during the pregnancy and got candida and complicated things.
