Q&A: I'm in remission from cancer. What should I know before I get pregnant?

I'm in remission from cancer. Do I need to know anything special before I get pregnant?

Re: I'm in remission from cancer. Do I need to know anything special before I get pregnant?

The Bump Expert

While your situation depends on the type of cancer you had and the treatment you were given, most women who've beaten cancer can definitely go on to have healthy pregnancies, as well as perfectly healthy babies. Still, it's important to know that chemotherapy and radiation can reduce your egg count -- so you may need to consider fertility drugs or other lab methods to get pregnant. And although no studies have definitively proven it, some docs suggest waiting up to five years after you beat cancer to try to conceive again, since any fertility drugs you may need to take will bump up your hormone levels. (This is especially true for any cancers linked to hormones, like breast cancer.)

Bottom line: There's no concrete proof that pregnancy increases your risk of getting cancer again, and cancer affects only one in about 1,000 pregnancies. But as long as you check with your doc and get the go-ahead, you can get down to babymaking ASAP.

I read the headline and will say categorically you must see support and advice from your treating doctor. Anything short of that may leave you and your baby at risk.

Reading he headline was enough! You must see your treating doctor and be guided by their wisdom and knowledge. Taking yourself to a public forum is fraught with risk and should only be accepted as a point of reference when meeting with your Doctor. Gordon - Green Smoke Coupon

It would be very unfortunate if the chemotherapy negatively effects your ability to have a child. Talking to a doctor might be a good idea.

It is very important to know more about breast cancer and pregnancy. Aside from getting recommendations and advise from your GP, as much as possible try to read more info about anything that talks about the condition. Pregnancy is risky in general. You can also refer to my website for further info. Hope you find this helpful.

It is not possible for all families to face breast cancer challenges courageously if they are not well-off. For helping such impoverished breast cancer victims the Breast Cancer Donation allows them to get adequate healthcare services and treatments on time which was impossible for them to have it before. It’s no doubt a great service to the breast cancer patients by good charities.
