Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I think it’s too early for my period, but I’m spotting. What’s going on? Does this mean I didn’t get pregnant?

Re: I think it’s too early for my period, but I’m spotting. What’s going on? Does this mean I didn’t get pregnant?

The Bump Expert

Light, brief (lasting just a day or two) spotting can actually be a sign of early pregnancy. It’s known as “implantation bleeding,” and here’s what it means: A few days after conception, that little fertilized (yay!) egg starts digging into the wall of your uterus and getting ready to grow. Since the uterine lining is nice and rich with blood, some women spot a bit at this point. Implantation bleeding is totally normal and not a cause for concern. A pregnancy test and doctor's visit is in order, though, to make sure implantation bleeding is truly the culprit.

If you find yourself bleeding heavily or for more than a couple of days, or if you bleed during a later stage of your pregnancy, call your doctor right away. This could be a sign of miscarriage or an ectopic (often called “tubal”) pregnancy.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I'm 6 weeks and had some light bleeding last night...is this normal??? When I called they only told me to monitor it and make sure it didn't get worse...but I'm still worried, did this happen to anyone else?

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I had dark brown spotting with a few small cots (sorry to be so graphic) around 6 weeks as well. It only lasted around two days, but i went to doc anyway. he said it was implantion bleeding. The only kind you need to worry about is bright red blood, and if its continuous. But if it's truly implantion, it won't last that long. Actually it's a good sign for the implantion. Means baby is getting nice and snug! I hope this helps

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I am 7 weeks and today I spotted just for that one time I peed. As of now there hasnt been anymore spots. They told me I could either come in and they check my levels or i just wait and see what happens. There was no cramps just the normal stretch and pulls that I have been feeling for the past few weeks. But i am still worried. Its so crazy that we are only a little pregnant and we are all so attatched to the little Miracles inside.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I'm question the implantation bleeding too. I had my last period (Nov 7) I went for my yearly physical Nov 12 (everything was normal). On the 14th I had significant cramps. On the 15th I had minor cramps and spotting with brown blood. A friend suggested I take a pregnancy test and it immediately came up positive! Yah! However it might be a miscarriage. Boo. I've had one blood test done and it confirms I'm pregnant. I have to wait two more days for my next blood test and I'm going crazy wondering if my beta levels have gone up or not. My first beta tests suggested I was 2-3 weeks. Which doesn't match my last menstrual cycle. I have no "normal" preggo symptoms. I guess my questions are.... Would a pregnancy test come back positive even if its still in the stages of implantation? When should symptoms start occuring? I'm so nervous. I really want this baby but right now the waiting is worse then what the results might be. Any ease of my anxiety would be great. thanks TT

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I found out I was pregnant a week and a half ago, and am just over 7 weeks. I have had brownish discharge since I found out. I had break thru bleeding while I was on birth control for a couple years that no amount of estrogen/progestin mix could fix. I know that the brownish spotting is ok/normal at first, but it's not going away. Today I'm really crampy almost like period type cramps and I had period-like discharge that was actually brown. Not really clotted like a normal period would supply, but just enough there to make me wonder why. Anyone have this happen or anyone have any input? Naturally I will be calling my dr tomorrow to see if she can give me a good answer, but I'm kinda looking for some ease thru someone who may have dealt with this before. Thanks.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I am just at 7 weeks and had some brown yuck last night, and a little tiny pink spot this afternoon - seemed to all be mixed with mucus... so I called the Dr. After this summer's miscarriage I am SO FREAKED OUT right now. I am at work, and nobody here knows anything about the "situation" - so I have no way to go whine to a co-worker. The nurse claims that it doesn't sound like I should be worried, yet, but she was going to see what my Dr. says about coming to get checked. Like the others above - I have had nothing out of the ordinary that would make me really worry, but history makes me wonder. I also did a lot of brisk walking this morning... could exercise make me have this sort of discharge?

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I had a light clottiness one day and asked my friend what it was. I had my period a good 2-3 weeks prior and I'm irregular so I didn't think it was my period. I thought nothing of it until my husband and I met with his Aunt (she specializes in natural family planning, Creighton Model) and she looked at my chart. I noted the day I had a little brown spots. She started to ask me questions leading to a pregnancy and told me it was probably implantation bleeding. My wonderful new Aunt told me to go home and take a pregnancy test, after only a few months of trying all 5 test came up positive. I can't believe I missed this important sign and blew it off. When you've never been pregnant, you don't really know what to look for, looking back I made excuses for my tender breast (I'm ovulating), etc. I am now 8.5 weeks pregnant but it happened around 3 weeks.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I'm about 5 weeks with my first (found out I was pregnant this past Sunday). I started lightly spotting yesterday and a little bit today. The discharge is a dark brown color.. I also had mild cramps yesterday while at work and today. Apparently, this is the week I was supposed to get my period, so from what I've read, the cramping is normal. But it is quite scary to feel cramps and have spotting.. I went out during lunch yesterday and spent another $15 on a box of pregnancy tests, just to confirm my pregnancy! So I'm constantly worried that something is going to happen, even though we really have no control at all. (That's the hardest thing for me) This is my first pregnancy so I don't know what to expect. So ladies, you're not alone!!! Best wishes to everyone :)

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

How soon after implantation bleeding can you test? I started spotting 5 days after the last time my hubby & I "tried". I spotted for 2 days, then it stopped. My period is due in 4 days. I tested today, but it came back negative. I have no other symptoms as of yet.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I had spotting about 7 days after my husband and I had sex. (And about 10 days into my cycle). I am very regular!! The spotting was really light, and only lasted for about an hour. So, I began to suspect "Implantation Bleeding".... we have been trying to get pregnant for almost 3 years, so I have read everything there is to read on the subject. Lo and behold, 3 weeks later I took a test, and it was Positive!! I am only 6 weeks along, and haven't been to the Dr. yet. I would wait until a couple of days after your period is due to take the test!

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I had some dark blood spotting for about three days a week before my actual period was due.(2 1/2 weeks ago) I thought it was my aunt flo, but I cannot be sure. Had the same flow as my periods but only lasted 3 days. Any thoughts? Could it be implantation bleeding?

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

When I was 5 weeks pregnant with my 1st baby, I had light to medium flow bleeding and then I had what looked like a piece of mucus plug come out. Everything I read and from talking to a nurse over the phone, pointed to miscarriage. But it turned out baby was 100% fine. I continued to have light, period like bleeding through out the first trimester and my mother and mother in law said they had the same thing, and nothing was ever wrong. This is the reason many women, especially on that show "I didn't know I was pregnant" don't realize they are pregnant because some women experience bleeding and mistake it for a period. Its just implantation bleeding being more heavy and intermittent in some women.

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

I believe I am around 7 weeks (though it is possible I am farther along, haven't been to doctor yet). I had a miniscule amount of bleeding on two occasions so far and I have been having some pain that can sometimes be kind of bad. My sister had gall bladder problems and she thinks that's what I'm having too. I want to get in to the doctor, but with my insurance it is difficult. I have a regular doc appt on Aug 11 and my first ultrasound Aug 12, but do you think I should go in sooner?

Q&A: Can implantation bleeding be a sign of pregnancy?

Yes, it was a sign for me. In fact, I started spotting 5 to 6 days prior to my cycle start date. You must be in tune with your body.
