Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I've heard something about the dangers of using nail polish during pregnancy -- is this true?

Re: I've heard something about the dangers of using nail polish during pregnancy -- is this true?

The Bump Expert Nail polish has been in the news lately because of controversy over dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a chemical found in most brands. Some experts think exposure could be harmful to your fetus, but there’s no clear evidence that the occasional man/pedi is unsafe. Play it safe by picking a polish that doesn’t include DBP, formaldehyde or toluene on the ingredient list. Try colors from Sally Hansen -- last year, the company announced plans to remove all three chemicals from their products.

re: Q: Nail Polish OK?

I've been reading a lot about the chemicals in all skin care/hair care products. How crazy should I be about avoiding these things? I'm worried that I'll rush out to buy organic and it is all a little silly.

re: Q: Nail polish okay?

There are also phthalates in nail polish and other beauty products like perfume. It's probably best to stay away from nail polish first trimester at least. I also cut back on perfume and highly scented products. It's just for a few months, could be worth it in the long run for your baby!-Leilawww.peainthepodcast.com

re: Q: Nail polish okay?

I just went to OPI's website and all nailpolishes have eliminated DBP and Toluene. Some hardeners contain Formaldehyde but it is at levels lower than the guidelines state it should be. Some are made without it, so be sure to check the list.

what about solar or acrylic nails? is that safe?

I have solar nails, should I get them removed or is it safe to continue to have them filled? And if I get them removed, what about the fumes/chemicals to remove the stubborn things?

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Seriously I think all of this stuff is a little ridiculous. If we stopped eating everything they say not to eat and doing everything they say not to do, we wouldn't be able to do anything. Think about all the babies that have been born in the past before all these "warnings" about every little thing came out, who were perfectly normal and healthy. I just say avoid the obvious things like alcohol, excessive caffeine, smoking, etc and not be so paranoid about stupid little things. Isn't this supposed to be a fun, exciting time?

What you do and how hardcore you chose to be during your pregnancy is up to you and how comfortable you're with it. I've had several friends who had gel nails all through their pregnancy and their babies are just fine.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

It's fine to paint your nails, girls. Nail polish is not absorbed into the nail or the nailbed. However, if you're going to paint your nails, make sure to open a window or do it in a well-ventilated area (just as with ANYTHING containing chemicals...like your household cleaner-and hopefully you're not using many of those...I use Murphey's Oil Soap, vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda) or if you're going to the salon for a mani or pedi, get a seat near the door and ask them to crack a window.

Sunniesideup1981 | March 04 , 2010 8:22 AM

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

And if we're going to be so picky as to worry about painting our nails, shouldn't we be worried about everything else too?? Like the toxins in carpet fibers and the glues that are used to install them?? Using plastic containers for food storage?? Using Tupperware to heat our food?? Even using the microwave?? Using lotion on our skin?? Household cleaners?? There are many, MANY things to worry about....

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I saw my OB on Friday. She said that she would like me to remove my acrylic nails before the end of my first trimester because it can cause an infection under the nail (which could happen even without pregnancy.) However, painting my nails is not an issue. She advised that when I go to the nail salon to ask to sit near the door and have the door open. That is so that I don't inhale the chemical fumes. But contact with nail polish will not hurt me or the baby. If you are concerned, call your OB's office and ask.

Hi Girls, I own a green business called Green 4 Your Soul. I carry a line of green nail polishes that are free Toluene, Camphor, Formaldehyde and DBP. These chemicals have been linked to birth defects so it's very important to choose a nail polish that doesn't contain them. It's a good idea to have your nails done in a salon that doesn't do acrylics as well so you aren't sucking in those toxic fumes. Feel free to check out my site and also email me via my site with any questions. I also carry eco pregnancy, baby and breastfeeding products. http://www.green4yoursoul.com/products/zoya-professional-nail-lacquer-astra.html

As far as I'm concerned, I stay clear of any product that could be harmful to either me or the baby. I visit costmeticsdatabase.com to check on my favorite products and whether they are o.k. or not... I do make one exeption with nail polishes though, I could not part with them... I use Sally Hansen products which are better than some others, plus they have tons of colors and are inexpensive.

All the stuff they tell you that we can and cannon do is so dumb. You can't eat lunch meat, cant have any coffee, can't do this can't do that and now we can't use our beauty products. What a bunch of CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There have been tons of babies born around the world and states and I bet you that mothers painted their nails.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Paint them outside in the fresh air. Honestly, we should be able to do just about anything in moderation. Paint your nails, but don't huff the polish. Eat a hot dog once a month instead of everyday. Have a sip of wine if you want, not an entire bottle. Its all about moderation. I bet sitting around worrying about all the things you can't do is worse for the kid than a hot dog and nail polish combined.

Those mediterranean booths in the mall have those special nail polishers with the dead sead rock, and then buffer, it looks like a clear coat and there is not a chemical involved and it lasts a whole month.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Definitely be concerned about what products you use, especially while you are pregnant. While plenty of women have been having babies that are seemingly healthy at birth, many chemicals being used in cosmetics have increased dramatically in the past 10-15 years. There is a good deal of research linking these chemicals to a rise in autism and certain cancers. The cosmetic database is a good place to check how safe your products really are- www.cosmeticdatabase.com.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I have been allergic to most nail polishes for years because of the above listed chemicals. There are a few that do not contain formaldehyde and toulene, check out Revlon and zoya (www.zoya.com) OPI and Sally Hansen have been saying that they are planning to remove the chemicals from their nail polishes, but they have not, at least all of the bottles I check out still have them listed on their ingredient list. So just be sure to check out the ingredient lists.

I am also curious about nail polish remover. I couldn't imagine it's safe since the fumes are so strong. I am big on painting my nails for work and have been looking through my polish collection. Most do not give ingredient information. Where can I find out if it's still safe? I also have polish that is 8 years old that still works well, but I am not sure if it's safe. Does anyone know about these brands: Sinful, CG, Rimmel, NYC, OPI, and Revlon? Are all Sally Hansens safe?

sherrone | August 21 , 2010 11:08 AM

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Wow this is silly. There are so many things they tell us to avoid while pregnant and I think that is exactly why so many babies are being born with allergies now because they aren't exposed to it while in the mother's womb and build up antibodies to those foods etc. When I asked my doctor what I needed to avoid she told me to be sensible and as far as she was concerned there was nothing I needed to be overly worried about other than the obvious no alcohol and being around smokers. Oh and if we had a specific food sensitivity to be wary of that because baby is more likely to develop it. So I won't be eating shellfish because my husband is deathly allergic to it. I am not stressing over what I can and can't do because it is not good for the baby.

I am a nail tech and I have never read or been told that you cant wear nail polish! They even have acrylic formula that you can have done for "fake nails" called OPI Clarite it is an oderless formula and also what most women who are pregnant and do nails use while pregnant. Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I am sure this is a controversial subject, but I will give it a shot. As a nail technician, I do know that CND Shellac polish is "3 free", which means it doesn't have all those ingredients that everyone gets worried about. It is a awesome product! I recommend it if you are worried about using the ingredients talked about. There was a comment below about pressure points, to address that, there are pressure points around your ankles that should not be massaged. These can make you go in to a early labor and also cause m/c early on. Nail techs are not liscensed in reflexology, so some still do it. You just have to be aware where they are massaging you. There are also certain oils that should not be used when getting spa services done. Lavender being one of them. If it is too concentrate and gets in your blood stream, it can cause the muscles to relax and cause early labor or m/c.

I just had my acrylics backfilled today and now I'm about to paint my toenails! My grandmother smoked, drank, was on a liquid diet so she wouldn't gain too much weight, and did god knows what else while she was pregnant and my mother turned out just fine. The chemicals in beauty products were actually much worse back in the day. Now that we are so 'health concious' most beauty products have less harsh chemicals in them. There are way more important worries than nail polish!

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Nail polish along with many personal use products such as lotions, shampoos, and perfumes contain pthalates. You might also see it abbreviated with a "P" at the end of the acronym, such as DBP. The reason pthalates matter is because they are a gender bender. It has a greater effect on boys than girls in utero. If exposure is significant, then little boys will have underdeveloped genitalia that will remain that will remain so throughout their life. It is a neuroendocrine disruptor. I highly recommend eliminating as many sources of pthalates as possible during pregnancy and this includes all foods and beverages that come out of flexible plastic containers. To find lists of personal products that are pthalate free go to www.nottoopretty.org

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Yes, lots of women have eaten food drenched in pesticides, used cosmetics containing chemicals, and even smoked cigarettes and still had seemingly healthy babys. But, does this healthy newborn later on develop ADD, get sick easily, have trouble learning etc? There have been studies to show that what we put in and on our body can help prevent illness. We are bombarded with cancer causing chemicals in our food, medicine, and our environment. So I just want to do what I can to ensure that my baby has the healthiest environment to grow in :) No one is perfect, we should all just do the best that we personally can do and feel comfortable with: )

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I honestly can't believe that people are complaining about the "things you can't do" during pregnancy. Wouldn't you want your baby to be as healthy as possible? Sure many babies have been born just fine while their mothers did things our Dr's are telling us not to do, but that doesn't mean that the risks weren't higher because they did them. Let's put it this way, someone can smoke cigarettes all their life and NOT end up with any health problems...HOWEVER, smoking DOES significantly raise the risks of health issues such as cancer. Why take the CHANCE? Same things goes with your pregnancy-why RISK IT?

I use Jacava nail polish, its free from Formaldehyde, DBP, Camphor and Toluene. Formaldehyde can harm your nails and respiratory system and is found in a variety of shampoos. It is a strong chemical which you avoid at all costs, especially if, like me, you're pregnant. Toluene is also bad for your health. An alternative is used, known as Camphor, but this is just as bad! Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I've been using Zoya products, and they are wonderful! They are long lasting (uh, my toenails have had the same color for 4 weeks without chipping!), and SAFE! I very rarely paint my nails, but when you're pregnant sometimes a little color makes you happy.:)

I figure if you wouldn't put it (it being anything, product, food....) on your newborn child, you should stay clear while pregnant and breastfeeding. Everything you put on you body is absorbed into your body and into your baby.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Zoya is an all natural brand of PROFESSIONAL nail care. It does not contain formaldehyde or DBP. I used it exclusively in cosmetology school and is actually less expensive than other brands I have seen. All of their nail products boast the same ingredients (or lack there of...), and are meant to be used as a system. TRY IT!!!

I am in the beauty industry and OPI polish is and always has been free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene. Check with your favorite nail salon that they use OPI polish, or better yet, purchase your own favorite colors so you always have the one you want to use.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

For years upon years, women have been using nail polish while pregnant. If we take all the chemicals in the world out of our bodies during pregnancy, our kids wouldn't make it safely past kindergarten. How are their bodies going to gain an immunity for harmful things if we put them in a bubble. I get my nails done every other week or so, partly because I want to look pretty, but mainly because I love the foot massage for my sore and tired feet. I like spending an hour and a half of alone time while people grovel over me saying how pretty I am while pregnant! This is the time to pamper yourself and not feel guilty! Do it!!!

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Try NARS nail polish - it is free of the three bad ingredients. As far as body products go, switching to organic, even when not pregnant, is a good idea. There are lots of carcinogens and reproductive-problem-causing ingredients in regular products. Avalon Organics or Jason are great brands.

I also avoid sulfates and parabens. I'm a big time label reader on everything, from what I eat to what I put on my skin/hair. It's ridiculous how much unsafe junk is in products now.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Unfortunately, this is one area that studies in modern medicine conveniently leave out... mainly because they don't want you to start reading labels and taking your business away from their toxic products. You can find a lot of great information simply on the internet. Be vigilant; do your research on foods and body products. If you see an ingredient you're not familiar with on a label, find out as much as you can about it.

That's a good question. Well I made a background check about that and I figured its fine. Just look at the content and see if there is anything toxic or too acidic for your fragile body.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

You absolutely do absorb chemicals through your skin, cuticles, scalp and nail beds. I cannot believe how quick women are to dismiss something that is a real concern as us all "just being worry warts". How long have chemical nail polishes been around? It's not like caffeine or alcohol, substances that have been around pretty much since women have been having babies. Look how long it took before they conclusively determined the dangers of THOSE substances! And just because babies are "born normal" doesn't mean there aren't higher instances of all kinds of health problems during childhood and beyond (some of which CAN be linked back to in-utero). No one is saying you should be paranoid about everything, but if someone is showing studies and research showing something is harmful, don't you want to be made aware of that???

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

No. If that were true, My 6 year old would be dead. ROFL. I painted my nails so often when I was pregnant with her. I got acrylics done a few times as well. Because of my small frame I was told to limit movement around 7 months...so I spent A LOT of time painting my nails in bed.

my doctor, who is pretty lenient, said I shouldn't wear nail polish until the second trimester, and that I couldn't dye my (gray) hair until then as well.

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

I am 7 weeks along and have been using the new OPI gel nail polish because I heard it was safe. I panicked the last time I was at the salon because I accidentally got a pretty good wiff of the nail polish remover near my face. We beat ourselves up with every decision we make, it can be so stressful. I think the important thing is moderation, stay away from chemicals, and try not to stress too much. I think we spend more time and energy stressing out and consumed with worry. What I do know is that you can not have acrylic nails on when you deliver because they need a clear nail bed to monitor your oxygen levels. They will take them off for you which, when you are in labor, only adds one more thing to get done. I can't imagine one more thing to stress you out would be a good thing at that particular time. So after my wiff of nail polish remover and the fear and stress and bad dreams as a result, I just don't need to keep up the gel nail habit. My nails will crack, chip and break I am sure but I don't want to find myself wondering in 5 years...was that it? Could that have caused this? I'm scrubbing my fruits & vegetables like crazy, I don't take the train anymore because the fumes and smoke in the tunnels were making me sick, I eat well and have been taking a prenatal vitamin with DHA since before we started ttc. This gift is too precious and I am not willing to take any chances but I also know that I can't hide in a bubble. So I pray that wiff of nail polish remover at 4 wks did nothing except make me nervous. And moving forward, leaving as many chemicals in the dust as I can, the better. But if anyone knows anything specific about the new OPI gel nail polish, I would love some feedback.

I have taken many classes on Human Growth and Development and they all mention teratogenetic factors. Nail polish is a proven one. It does not mean that 100% your bay is going to have problems but think about it...do you really want to risk it just because your nails will not look cute?

Q&A: Can I use nail polish while pregnant?

Although the chemicals in certain nail polish are harmful, it did not stop the FDA from allowing them in those products. I have not come across anyone who has a miscarriage or affected baby from using nail polish, but still, it is safer to paint them while in a well ventilated room. Try not to inhale too much of those fumes. William - Baby Stores Sydney

According to OPI.com "Since 2006, OPI has reformulated its entire line of Nail Lacquers, Nail Treatments, and Nail Hardeners to eliminate DBP (dibutyl phthalate) and Toluene." You can find all the info under the Opi cares tab. Hope this helps you all! It helps me! I refuse to give up beauty for the bump!

I don't believe it to be any more of an issue than painting your nursery walls. Just make sure that when you paint your nails your in an open space where you are not breathing in the fumes. I think this one is taking it a bit too far. I'm not rushing out and buying specialty/organic nail polish. If it's that big a deal I'll just stop painting them alltogether
