Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

Is it bad to color your hair when you're pregnant? Are there any safe products you can use?

Re: Is it bad to color your hair when you're pregnant? Are there any safe products you can use?

The Bump Expert

In general, it appears to be safe to color your hair during pregnancy, although there are no scientific studies that have conclusively determined this. There are some things you can do to minimize the potential risks: dye should avoid contact with your scalp, if possible; consider highlights (the dye solution does not contact the scalp and is covered in foil); wait until after the first trimester to color your hair.

More from The Bump Editors: During your first trimester, you can alternately try an all-natural hair color like henna. Later in your pregnancy, cut back on chemicals in easy ways by looking for dye with little or no ammonia or peroxide. If you color your own hair, pick the brand with the least number of chemicals on the label, work in a well-ventilated room, and wear gloves to keep the chemicals from passing through your skin. If you go to a salon, ask for the earliest possible appointment to minimize your exposure to chemicals.

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

I just had my eight week appointment with my nurse mid wife. I live in the northeast where I consider our nurses and doctors to be among the most knowledgable. she absolutely assured me that pregnant women can color their hair and can get their nails done. Hair color does not penetrate into the blood stream, unless you have some sort of open wound on your head.

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

as a hairstylist i'd just like to add that EVERY hair color out there contains amonia or a chemical derived from amonia... otherwise they wouldn't work... also... about the henna dye... don't do it if you plan to continue coloring your hair with your normal color afterward... hair color cannot penetrate henna and henna can cause some nasty problems if you intend to perm over it as well.... so if you are concerned about coloring your hair during pregnancy just don't do it

I am a PREGNANT hairstylist (in the South)and I have 2 perfectly healthy girls and I color hair everyday! There is no problem coloring your hair while pregnant. The color has changed alot since Dr.s used to tell women not to color their hair as with everything else. So color away!

I have heard as long as the chemicals do not touch the scalp, it's fine. Highlights sound like the way to go to be safe! I don't think anyone is trying to bash another state, or their health care professionals. I appreciate the opinions.

Wow! You can really tell there are some hormones going through a few of the women on this board! Can you say catty? Maybe you should not read so much into things and realize the woman who originally posted didn't say that people in the south were stupid or back woods. I am in the south (born and raised) and I did not take offense to anything she said. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Let's try to be nice and not judge people just because they might not have worded something to your liking. True women raised in the south should know better than to be this way!

Living in Canada and it's ok to do it here as long as you aren't in the first trimester. Anything after that and you are ok!!

I think something else we should consider is that the fumes may cause you to feel ill. I am only hesitating from dying my har right now at 12 weeks or before because I have been so sick. I can't even stand the smell of my hand soak or laundry detergent without yaking I can't imagine hair dye. As soon as that goes away I will be updating my hair color. I sounds like it is a personal opion on whether you dye or don't dye.

One big woot for hormones! lol! Nah she did say that she comes from a place where she feels the doctors and nurses are more knowlegeable. So, I can see where I and others have taken offence! Hair dye is fine, my mom did it, and all 5 of us came out just fine!

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

I colored my hair with my first child and i asked my uncle who is a pediatrician and he assures me that i can color my hair with out a problem. I use ammonia free hair colors since i am asthmatic but as far as this topic goes i think that you will get one answer from one doctor and another from another doctor.

I think each doctor has their own opinion so speak with your doctor! Also I am a hairstylist and I have been told that the color can not be guaranteed because of all of the different hormones in your body.

Why do Northeners think everything is better up there? I'm with mlulucam on this one. I am right by Duke in North Carolina which is where most of the Northeastern doctors came from.

Ah. I don't think she thought about what she was writing. But I did have a chuckle with some of the responses. I've had "foot-in-mouth" after I said something I couldn't take back and didn't mean for the way it was interpreted. I guess the best thing to do is preview what you post and take humorous responses in stride. :)

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

Ask your doctors gals! I read some bad info on a Q&A and just double checked with my doc, it was dead wrong. Bottom Line is it may be safe, but how do we know some minor thing we do for a cosmetic reason my not in some way affect our unborn baby! I was curious so i searched the question, but will still ask the people who went to all those years of school to focus solely of health care to the unborn. Let's also try to support each other not wage war! This is a hard road for many of us and we get enough opinions thrusted on us daily and get our bellies groped by strangers, we don't need to get crazy on each other! Good luck to all the fellow mamas traveling this rough road along with me!

I am also a stylist and in my 6th weekof pregnacy and I am constantly around hair color. The key is everything in moderation. Just dont over due it. For me when it starts to make me feel sick or light headed from the fumes I just walk outside and get some fresh air. But meidically there is nothing that hair color will really do to contribute to problems in pregnancy.

Umm... Maybe I am out of line and personally I dont care... I thought this posting thing was to address the question at hand not where people are from. I am a purebred yankee straight from the northeast... Ive been living in the South. I dont know if i ever want to read anything on this site bc im offended now. I THINK the southern people are looking a little.... silly.... bashing someone else for their OPINION... Maybe breeding is different but I was raised that everyone is entitled to their opinions. You dont have to agree with them but you should respect the differences. Thanks.

I am 10 weeks (wohoo! so excited :-) ) I haven't colored yet this trimester, I wanted to wait til the second, since the baby's risks of many things decreases then. But I'm thinking any day now I'm going to dye it. I am 23 with gray in my roots! Not pretty.

@ctaylor3, the southerners are also giving their opinion, and are entitled to it just as the female who made the comment that she considers the doctors and nurses in the northeast to be the most knowledgeable. It was a statement based on ignorance and that is my opinion. I am originally from New York and now live in Charlotte, NC and can tell you there are very intelligent people down south. All places have smart people and I am pretty sure that all place have dumb people.

SweetHappiness I agree with you, im 17 weeks pregnant and I live in south carolina, I am from michigan, and i dont understand whey you all are saying "northeners" think everything is better, that is just as bad as what you are accusing them of saying, she just meant that she felt the doctors she talked too knew what they were talking about. and Amorgan that is not what she meant, why dont you try chatting with her? I love the doctors down here in SC and i love the doctors in Michigan, wherever you go you want to believe that they are the most knowledgable. Go take a nap!

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

I had heard that it wouldnt harm you nor the baby if you got your hair done so, I died my hair when I was 10 weeks pregnant and it did'nt even stick. My hair dresser said it was because of the hormones that were being produced that the color kind of repelled against my hair. Hard to explain but that was just my experience. Best of wishes to everyone =)

Wow. The pure ignorance of soo many people on here. The lady said she felt the doctors up north are AMONG the most knowledgable. Not that they were the most knowledgable. Maybe everyone should just get their hormone in check before they go spazzing on people. Yes everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of you were abusing the privilege. But hey who am I to say anything....

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

just a quick answer about the healthcare up north. I'm from the south and dying to move back to the south. my husband is a physician and he is really wanting to move to the south too because that's where all our family is...we got married 6 months ago and we've been wanting to move down south ever since..one issue...he fears that going to the south will not allow him the same opportunity to give high quality patient care.. he has high conscience and likes to give his patient care his best...yes..the ratio of patients to doctors in the north is about 1/2 what it is in the south..that means a doctor sees double the number of patients in the south and those are all the offers that he's been getting..he's highly qualified and he's very intelligent and he is very honest with his work..that is the main reason we don't want to re-locate to the south so far because he really wants to give his work 100%....doctors are not machines either that's how they are treated down south obviously!!! It seems the south is treating them very badly from the offers we've seen so far and we're very disappointed!!! so YES healthcare up north is much better quality because doctors have enough time to see the patient in most cases.........we're still hoping to find a suitable job where he feels he can give quality patient care but we've been looking for more than 6 months already...he gets crazy offers! He thinks healthcare is insane down south.............

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

I live in Central Pennsylvania and there is quite the discrepency among OB/GYN physicians in this area. One will tell you it's safe, while the other tells not to use any type of color at all during your pregnancy. I am a licensed cosmetologist and have been for the past 9 years. I am in my 10th week of pregnancy with my first child. I voiced the same concerns with having my own hair highlighed/colored. As well as asked about whether or not it was safe for me to handle the chemicals that go along with my every day career. My physician advised me to handle all my products with gloves on my hands and said that generally he advises his patients to stay away from hair color in their first trimester. My personal opinion is that if it's safe for me to continue doing my job while pregnant, than why can't I have the same service done to myself? Bascially, in my opinion, you are safe to have your hair chemically altered while pregnant, but take caution during your first trimester. I plan to only have highlights with foilds put into my hair in my first trimester. This way, I am following all the precautionary steps that my physician suggests.

richelleplitt | September 27 , 2011 2:06 PM

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

I feel that except from the odor of the chemicals that only you and your stylist can feel, there's nothing else really that can harm the baby when coloring hair. It's non sense to say otherwise. Even if you have a baby you have to take care of yourself, especially with long hairstyles that need more upkeep. Personally, I don't have a problem with coloring my hair and I will, once my roots will start to grow.

Okay I know this was a while back but are yall really getting mad at her. You all are taking offense to something that probably was meant to be harmless. She never said anything about the south or any other place. All she could of meant was where she is from the Doctors are more knowledge than (probably) the hairstylists, or her mom, or the pregnant lady done the street, or trying to find out over the web. God knows its more help than this site, because apperantly this site just bashes people for what they say. I am from south Louisiana and I did not take offense to this but I did to what yall said to her. Southern hospitality my butt, instead of blowing it off and thinking logically, oh maybe she meant this. Yall deciding to punish her because yall decided that she deserved to be, who are yall God. Yeah, I didn't think so. Yall didn't even bother to think about what you were about to say. That is so childish. Wow people these days, I hope you are ready cause KARMA ALWAYS BITES YOU IN THE A$$.

Q&A: Can I color my hair while pregnant?

Although this question was asked about 3 years ago i was wondering the same thing about dying my hair. thank you to everyone whom added some insight. to the lady that did ask the question initially she was brave but i bet you all the people that bashed her wouldn't dare say those mean things to her face. the ones that bash are just the ignorant incompetent ones whom could not just answer a friendly sensible question. we all know doctors come from all over. they are smart enough to be doctors apparently no matter if they from the north or south it doesn't matter. this website will be looked at many times for the answer to one question and the mean people ruined it . now that i have that out of the way ( commenting on a 3 year old bashment), i think i can safely dye my hair. 31 weeks preggers should be safe. thanks again folks.
