Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

It seems OBs want moms-to-be to get their first ultrasound as early as eight weeks, but I have read about the sound waves possibly disrupting the baby's growth process at that early stage. Is this true?

The Bump Expert

An ultrasound during the first trimester appears to be not only safe but, in many cases, essential to confirming a normal pregnancy. Furthermore, the most accurate screening test available for Down syndrome involves a first trimester ultrasound.

But, an ultrasound does involve energy that can theoretically lead to temperature increases when the fetus is exposed to it for a long time. Certain types of ultrasound tests expose the fetus to more energy (and potential temperature increases) than others. The bottom line is that an ultrasound can be an important diagnostic tool and during all trimesters should be performed by an experienced technician or physician.

re: Q: Early Ultrasound OK?

I had an ectopic last year and early u/s caught it just in time before rupture. I am definitely FOR early u/s. This time we had one at 7 &1/2 weeks and it was great to see the baby's heart beating.

re: Q: Early Ultrasound OK?

Especially if you're over 35 like I am, an early u/s is not harmful, they're a learning tool for you and your doctor and will put your mind at ease. We were able to hear our baby's heartbeat at 7 weeks 4 days!

I don't think it's weird to have your first u/c at 10 weeks. My first OB visit isn't until I am 9 1/2-10 weeks, and that's when my first one will be, too

My doctor didnt seem to think an ultrasound was needed intill the end of April. We dont even know how far along I am now , he's guessing 5-7 weeks , but it could be almost 9 weeks b/c of a weird AF in Jan. Does anyone find that strange? I think we should be checking sooner....

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

Jewels, Don't go by what you read on the message boards as every doctor and practice is different. I am pretty much in the same boat you. My first Dr. Appt was around 7 weeks (per their count) but I won't get my first US until this week (wk 12). This is standard practice for these doctors as my co-worker and her SIL also used them for their second children. Unless you have a history of complications, some practices just don't see the need for an US so early. This will be my first child so I can't wait unitl I hear the heartbeat & they confirm all is well. GL to you!

re: Q: Early ultrasound okay?

By my last periods calculation I should be 8 weeks. But I think I'm really only 6 weeks. I got my first u/s on the day of my 8th week and the doctor still couldn't see anything. He located the Gestational Sac (SP?). He looked a little concern and send me for some blood work and scheduled another u/s in one week. I'm a little nervous. If I am 6 weeks should he be able to see something?

my first appt is this friday, i will be exactly 6 weeks. I know that's super early, do you think they will do an U/S? I just wanna know that my baby is okay.

I just went in this last wednesday and the doctor did an ultrasound, I'm only 6 weeks, I didn't get a due date though!!! I go back in a lil over a week for another ultrasound (which is comfortin since I spotted last night and I kinda freaked)

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I am seven weeks this week, and I had my first appoinment today-I also had an ultrasound done, it was cool to be able to see the baby, but honestly it wasn't much :) You can see the sack and a little white "blob" for lack of a better term! It did take the tech a few minutes to locate our baby, but he or she is definitely there!I will have another on Nov.9-so that will probable be a little better picture! Good luck to everyone :)

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I had an US at 4 weeks, all they were able to see was my "endometruim thickening in the uterus" per the tech, which she said is a good sign, no sac, no baby, not dot, NOTHING! im gettin nervous and want to see SOMETHING! anyone else had the same issue?

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

Mrs. Olive, I just had an us, today and I THOUGHT i was closer to 6 weeks along, but the us confirmed that i'm in fact, only 4.5 weeks along. She saw the sac and a tiny dot... but not much else. I want to see more.... I'm so worried! I have to get blood work done to test my hcg levels today and 2 days from today. Then, I have to go to my OB in 2 weeks and I'm noping to see more at that appointment. hang in there!

MsYuri | November 23 , 2009 2:49 PM

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I think they are necessary, especially if something funky is going on. I had one today thinking I was only maybe 2 weeks and found out more like 5 weeks! I also found out the reason I am having horrible cramping and occasional spotting is that I have a 5cm cyst on my left ovary. Picture this ladies: my cyst was larger than my uterus! Hopefully it goes down on its own or I may have to have it laproscopically drained... needless to say, little bit worried!

nurseJK | December 04 , 2009 5:23 PM

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I had my first DR visit at 5 weeks, and just had my first ultra sound last tuesday, where I though I was nine weeks. I found out that from my ultra sound that I was only 8wks 3 days. But we could see the baby's head and little arms and legs, and you could see the heart beating. It was an amazing feeling, as I have had some spotting early on, and this was extremely reassuring to my husband and myself. I had gone through all the HCG testing and my numbers were good but the docctor still wanted me to have it tested again, and the ultra sound make everything seem so real finally. Our baby looked like a little gummy bear because the arms and legs are still short and nubby. I definately think an early ultrasound is a good idea, especially if you have had complications or spotting. I don't have my next until I'm at 20 weeks which will be in FEB. Good Luck to you all.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I think every dr office is different. The office I go to you get an ultrasound at every appt. so I will be having my first one at 6 weeks. I love watching the baby grow from a little dot to a real looking baby. They also do the 3D ultrasound and burn each one onto a DVD for us to keep. We used this office for our last baby but my first and second were with a different dr. and they only did an ultrasound around 20 weeks to do the usual measurements!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I was able to get into the doctors office the day after I passed the 5 at home tests. The ultra sound at the time showed nothing so they did blood work and scheduled me for another ultra sound the following week. I had my second ultasound at 6weeks. It was just a little speck. At 8 weeks i had another and it was so awesome to see what a difference two weeks made. My husband and I were amazed that we could already see the heart beating. I go back at 12 weeks for another and this time we should be able to hear it!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I'm high risk and have had 2 miscarriages, so my doctor is being very aggressive with monitoring my pregnancy. I don't have an LMP so we were all just guessing that I'm around 7 weeks. Today I had my 3rd ultrasound. I got to see the heartbeat and we finally got a due date (she put me at 6wks 3days). I'll be having a weekly ultrasound until 10 weeks probably. Being high risk is totally scary, but I feel really blessed to be having these weekly ultrasounds and watching my little seamokey grow!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I am 9 weeks 3 days pregnant today and have already had 2 u/s (one at 6 weeks and one at 8). I am going back in this coming week as well to have a third. I asked my doctor and she said that she just likes to keep an eye on everything even though I have no risk factors or any complications. I am not complaining because I like seeing the baby and hearing the heartbeat every two weeks but am concerned there's something she's not telling me. Anyone else getting way more u/s than what seems to be average?

KGiesel | December 11 , 2010 10:50 AM

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

We went for our first U/S today...I thought that we were 7 weeks along as per my LMP. The tech couldn't see anything with the abdominal scan and during the internal scan she found out I have a retroflexed uterus. All that she was able to see was endometrial thickening, the gestational sac, maybe a yolk sac, and a corpus luteal scar. She said that these are all positive things, but said she couldn't say "yes" or "no" to confirming pregnancy. It's so frustrating and hard not to be worried and overanalyzing everything right now. I go to my doctor on Jan. 18th and hopefully by then she'll send me for another U/S and we'll be able to see something. Just scared and frustrated to think we were 7 weeks when it looks more like we're 5 weeks....

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I don't know- I was reading some pretty scary stuff about what ultrasound can do to mice brains...its one of those things that seems to me not really worth the risk. I mean, if its the difference between *any* kind of brain damage and me getting the satisfaction of a picture or heartbeat, I'll forgo. I already had a first one routinely done at 5 weeks, and now I'm a little angry that I wasn't given an option or told that there have not (of course, human subjects) been studies showing that the increase in ultrasound is absolutely *not* linked to the increase in autism, etc. I think from here forward I'll opt out...

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I just had my first u/s today at 7 weeks. [I was supposed to be 9 weeks, but the irregular periods changed that.] They had to use the device that they inserted into your vagina, but otherwise it was pretty good. The heartbeat was so strong!

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

I had my first appt. yesterday at just about 5 weeks. She did an ultrasound, but explained that she didn't think we would see much. We were able to see a small sack within my uterus. She asked me to come back in 2 weeks to make sure that we see things within that sack. Should we be able to detect a heartbeat at that point?

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

my doc had been seeing me since i found i out i was pregnant. My first visit was at week 5 and she had done a transvaginal and belly sonogram even at week 5. She said she will be seeing me every single week and doing transvaginal sonogram every week until week 33! Her explanation was to monitor anything wrong closely, but i'm not sure if it's really needed that frequently. Even though it's pretty neat to see the baby from nothing in a yolk sac, to something with a heart beat...i'm at week 7 now.

Q&A: Are early ultrasound okay?

Ultrasounds do not change fetal outcomes (http://aapnews.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/9/11/2-b) and for the most part cause undue stress. They can cause speech issues, brain damage (http://aapgrandrounds.aappublications.org/cgi/content/extract/16/6/65) and should only be used for high risk cases, where the benefit outweighs the risks. I encourage all of you to do some research so you can decide for yourself if it is worth the risk to just take a peek. The American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology encourages women to only get ultrasounds if necessary. The fact is that ultrasound is a big money maker for doctors. They themselves don't always follow the guidelines that they should. Read this article: http://health.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978382100. It may make you think about whether or not it is worth it. Ultimately we as parents must decide what is best for our children. We are accountable and must make a decision based on research and our personal situation. :)

Due to some spotting I had, my Dr. ordered my first ultrasound at 6 weeks, 0 days. It was done internally. We were amazed to see our little tiny baby in there, and the heartbeat!!! I wasn't warned of any risks to the baby. But I do know, that seeing our little miracle alive and well inside me was a great reassurance to myself and my husband :) Can't wait for the next one!

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

I think it's safe to have early US. They can make sure the baby is where it's supposed to be. But I do have to say I knew I was pregnant right when my monthly friend didn't show up and my first US was at 6wk 3days, I wish they could have waited until at least wk 8 so I could've seen more. I get four US with my doc and one of them is already taken. But I was lucky enough to see the heartbeat. :)

Natali25 | October 15 , 2011 9:43 AM

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

I'm almost 10 weeks with my first baby and my doctor will only do one, maybe two ultra sounds my entire pregnancy unless something seems to be going wrong. I'm 21 with no risk factors for any major health problems etc on either my side or my husbands side that may effect the baby. So right now I wont have one till 19 weeks when we find out gender, But I might get another one at 11 weeks if they can't find baby's heart beat on doppler. My doctor said they only do it if its medically nessecary. If I'm at a VERY low risk with my age and family history and no complications with the pregnancy so far, then they dont do them very often at all. Which is ok with me because I do believe its safer for my baby to not expose it to the ultrasound waves and all if I dont need to.

i am going on 11 weeks, and have had an U/S every single visit at my appointments.so far, all is good with my current pregnancy. i am glad we had them early, we were able to catch my last miscarriage at 8 weeks before i had passed the baby on my own. it was more closure for us in dealing with the loss. i find it more strange that more doctors dont use the U/S more often.

This Saturday I will be 12 weeks and I have not had an ultra sound yet. I'm learning that each dr is different! My next appointment is at my 15 week mark and we still are not having an ultrasound on that day. They said they will not do one until week 20. If you're worried, ask your dr if you can at least hear the heartbeat. That is very reassuring to know it's in their and it's heart is beating!

This post is ridiculous to me & made to scare already anxious new mothers. Ultrasounds have been happening for years now. Techs are trained. & it would take a whole heck of a long ultrasound and "energy" to hurt that growing baby. Posts like this should not happen. Keep peeking at those beautiful babies ladies.

LC03 | October 18 , 2011 11:15 AM

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

I've read the scientific papers on this information, and i believe we're right to be concerned about excess u/s waves. When OB's say that u/s have not been proven harmful to humans, that's because they're never been "tested" on humans. When excess u/s waves were emitted onto a growing mouse fetus (at an approximate strength used on people) studies confirmed that cortical cells don't properly migrate to the otter cortex. U/s maybe safe in moderation (1 or 2 in pregnancy, showing no statistical difference), but beware any more than that.

I can't believe the amount of u/s some of the posters on here have had! It seems a bit excessive and how expensive! I'm 34 weeks and have only had one u/s at week 20. They won't do another one unless there is a problem.

AbbyGraham | October 18 , 2011 11:36 AM

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

I think its completely ridiculous for women with no signs of complications or no history of pregnancy problems to be having ultrasounds as early as 6 weeks. What are they gaining from them? Do they think that just because they see a tiny speck and maybe a heartbeat by 8 weeks something can't go wrong? And why all the ultrasounds so early for "dating". Healthy babies are "full term" anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks. I'm pregnant now and had an ultrasound at around 14 weeks for "dating" because I have endometriosis and erratic periods but just because we found out he was measuring a whole 3 days ahead of the calendar date doesn't mean he is gonna show up a different day. My OB normally only does US at 20 weeks. There is really NO REASON to have one before that unless there are reproductive tract abnormalities, history of problems, etc. Are you serious that there are Drs. who do an US every appt.? For what purpose?! To make money?! If you were supposed to see your baby the whole time they were developing we would have a little window into our uterus. Get over it! Its fun and exciting to have that ultrasound but I don't know how it could have to same flair if you are getting one every 4 weeks or so. And seriously, that's not normal use and I would definitely be worried about harming my baby by doing one that often. I have never smoked but gave up drinking when I went off the pill, as well as caffiene, lunch meat, seafood and all medications besides my prenatal vitamins and iron and you think I would let somebody send US waves into my uterus every 4 weeks. Come on people, grow a brain and stop just letting these Drs do unnecessary procedures unless you have a ligitimate reason. I'm reading alot of women who are worried because you aren't seeing anything at 6 weeks. Don't let your Dr. cause you that stress!!!

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

i've had a total of 3 and i'm 35 weeks. i went to the ER at around 8wks with major cramping so they did one then to confirm that everything was ok along with a scan for any gall stones which i had none. the did blood work then too which showed my hormone levels were off the charts so everyone was rushing around to see if it was molar or multiples.....nope, just a lab error :-P so i had my first one with my OB around 10 weeks to confirn the pregnancy, then the anatomy scan was done at 19 weeks, i won't get another unless they suspect complications but i'm not at risk for anything so now we wait for baby! i will say that my first u/s took rediculously long bc the tech was new and had no idea what to look for (lucky me!) but my OB office is great, she gets in and out in no time so if any stunting was done to her growth i can thank the ER tech for that.

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

Early ultrasounds can be a live-saving mechanism for many women. I had an IUD when I got pregnant the 2nd time, and early ultrasounds were used to confirm a normal pregnancy, and to rule out an ectopic or otherwise "misplaced" pregnancy. I am now 18 weeks pregnant, and baby is developing normally. I expect to have another ultrasound in a week or two.

they can use an early ultrasound to predict a due date as well i have always been a little irregular and wasn't sure when my daughter was conceived but my doctor performed an ultasound at 11 weeks and i got an accurate due date which was good because i though i was 13 weeks along but now i am 29 weeks and i cant wait to get another i want to see my baby girl again i am thinking i will get another in 3-5 weeks to see if she is settling in ok head first and all i have had 3 ultrasounds so far and nothing makes a nervous mother feel better than to see her childs heart beating and http://www.thebump.com/profiles/jessica63390 it really sucks that the military wont let you have one but i am sure they would make some sort of exception if medically necessary my last ultrasound was just to make sure the baby was ok i had some cramping and bleeding and we though maybe an abruption but they checked it out and shes fine so dont worry if they need to do one the insurance cant say no

Usually the only thing harmful in an early u/s is using the Doppler to hear the heartbeat before 12 weeks or somewhere around there.

I don't think ultrasounds are necessary. I am currently pregnant with my second child. My oldest is 11 yrs. I didn't have an ultrasound with her b/c it wasn't medically necessary. I am currently 22+ weeks into this pregnancy and have already had two. I'm not complaining. I love having the pics. I just don't think that they are necessary.

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

This is my 6th pregnancy, I have had 3 miscarriages and 2 live births. With my daughter (2nd pregnancy) everything was normal, until the tech thought she saw fluid around her heart so they sent me to a specialist. Her heart is fine and we found out that she has Down Syndrome after seeing the specialist. We saw him weekly until she born 6 weeks early because of low amniotic fluid. With my son (4th pregnancy) we saw both my OB and the specialist for early DS screenings. Every time we saw the specialist he did an u/s. Everything was fine with my son so we didn't have to see the specialist anymore, but he was born 4 weeks early due to pre-term labor. With this pregnancy (number 6) we saw the specialist again in the beginning, and I had partial prevea and he did a miscarriage screening. The partial prevea fixed itself as mu tummy grew bigger and didn't really find anything on the miscarriage screening. Everything is fine with my son so we no longer see the specialist. I believe there is nothing wrong with early u/s but to each his own.

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

to all you new moms out there, (first time pregnancies) you don't need an ultrasound to hear the heartbeat. they have fetal heartbeat monitors that most doctors will use, especially if you ask them to. I am lucky, my doctor does a sonogram every appointment. That is just how his practice works. I only have an ultrasound if there is a complication or something like that. This is my 4th pregnancy, but will only be the 3rd live birth (God-willing). I am in my 20th week and have had one ultrasound to determine the baby was ok when I was hospitalized in the 8th week. After a loss 2 years ago, they felt it necessary to double check. Most doctors don't even want to see you until you feel like you are in or past your 10th week of pregnancy, so no it's not unusual to have an ultrasound only once and around your 20-24th week of pregnancy.

Is getting an early ultrasound okay?

I had to see my obgyn every week from 4 weeks til 12 weeks to have injections to help me keep my baby as i have a history of miscarriage. So i had 8 ultrasounds by 12 weeks, then had my 12 weeks nuchal translucency ultrasound, another one at obgyn at 16 weeks, my 18-20 week scan, another at obgyns at 20 weeks, another at 24 weeks and i'm now 25 weeks and due to see him again at 28 weeks. And my baby seems fine!!

I have heard something about the waves/heat effecting a baby's hearing. Not sure where that oen came from (science, myth etc). I agree with PP. I had an early ultrasound that found an unviable pregnancy that my body was not recognizing as a miscarriage. I am glad I found out early and didn't continue with the pregnancy. The second time around, the ultrasound provided us with relief that our LO was healthy and growing as expected.

I am an ultrasound tech and I do OB u/s every day. At the levels that your ob/gyn should be using, there are no harmful bioeffects. A sac should be seen on a scan at 5 wks and a fetal pole with a heart beat should be seen on a scan at the earliest 6 wks.

Dr. Roman, can you tell us which types of ultrasound tests expose the baby to more energy and temperature increases (if they are harmful)? Thank you!

Yeah, well, the AMA doesn't recommend them as screening tools, but only as diagnostic tools. I get the fear of abnormalities and ectopics, but for the majority of the population this is an added risk and expense in a pregnancy pushed for by malpractice insurance companies, not science. If you end up with a kid with behavioral problems or slow mental capacity, that's your problem - malpractice is there to make sure everything up until the birth goes o.k. There have been many studies showing that ultrasound technology can be deleterious to the very delicate developing life inside a mother (just look it up http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=ultrasound%20prenatal%20harmful ) which is why the American Medical Association doesn't recommend them for everyone. They used to x-ray moms all the time, (which is entirely different technology, but I'm using it to state that there are two sides to every coin and although most x-rayed babies were fine, we wouldn't dream of doing it today)

I am definitely for early u/s. I had some early bleeding that was causing a concern and an early u/s let us know that everything was going smoothly and gave some peace of mind. It was nice to keep the stress level down a bit!
