Ways To Tell Your Partner You're Pregnant

Getting ready to spill it? Bumpies tell us how they shared the news.

We asked our readers how they broke the news to their parterner and here's what they came up with...

"I made DH a card that said on the outside, 'You are the love of my life. But that is not all you are. You are also.....' And on the inside it said, 'Going to be a DADDY!' When he looked at me I was holding the positive digital test.” -- AmRae11

“I crawled into bed with DH and said, ‘Good morning Daddy!’" -- Jesnbrent

“I had bought a shirt for our puppy that said 'Big Brother' and hid it until the day I found out we were expecting. My husband walked in from work, and as usual, puppy got to him first. My DH said 'I see that you bought our puppy a new shirt,' and then after a pause, he understood what it meant. It was a great moment." -- Dunkin

I had always planned on some elaborate way to tell DH the big news, but it just didn't work out like that. I was alone when I got my BFP, but DH got home about ten minutes after. I had nothing planned and no time to plan it, so I just told him through bursts of happy tears. He grabbed me, said congrats, and we hugged.” -- Sara0110

I shrieked from the bathroom, so that was the giveaway ;)” -- FinallyPG

“DH knew my period was late and that I would be taking the pregnancy test in the morning. He works nights so when I came in the next morning we talked a little about finances for a minute, then I told him we couldn't go to Argentina in January like we had planned. He asked my why and that's when I told because we're having a baby!” -- Septemberdc

My husband and I love to eat birthday cake so I decided to tell him by presenting him with a cake that had "I'm pregnant!" written on it. I served it as dessert and just let him read it and react - it was very positive! : )

by F1tnessG1rl

My WH knew I was a couple of days late and that I was going to the doctor's that morning for a pregnancy test. So he called me at lunch time and figured he wouldn't mention it if I didn't mention it. So, when I got home (he gets off work before I do) (we live 7 hours away from our families), I said "Bay, we get to spend Christmas here at home this year". He said "why?", I said because we're having a baby on January 17th!!! He was over-estatic!!! :-)

by KL777

I really wanted to get a onesie that said "I love my Daddy" but I couldn't find one anywhere in the the time I had. So when my DH came home for lunch, I had a rattle and a "Congrats Daddy" card all wrapped up for him. I told him I had a prize to fix the bad day he'd been having, but really I had big news! He took one look at the rattle and gave me a HUGE hug... and even cried a few happy tears. :D

by SilentJuliet

After trying for over a year, I was too excited to do any of the cute things I had thought of. I dropped DH off at work, got a test on the way home...and called him the second it came up positive.

by Jays-n-Shane

I used to be a manager at Gymboree, and when the first line I fell in love with arrived (in 2002) I took him shopping with me to get one of each piece. I decided that when I found out I was pregnant I would wrap those items (belive me, I have a closet full now) and give them to him as a gift. He stared at the clothes for about five seconds, looked at me and asked if I was pregnant. He catches on quick :)

by Princess_Ariel

I took the test while my husband was at work, so when he came home that night I had tied a ribbon around our dog's neck with the pregnancy test in an envelope that read "Top Secret" Of course our pup went to greet him first thing- you should have seen my husband's face when he saw the positive test! He kept saying "is this for REAL?" lol

by LATERSAYSTATER

I walked in the living room while he was working on his computer and said "Does this look like a plus sign?" And he said no! (It was really faint.) I went to work, and he called me that afternoon to tell me the lines had darkened and it really was a plus sign!

by SavannahKraemer

It was our 1 year wedding anniversary and we went to a very nice dinner. I had got a pretty box and tied the positive pregnancy test to the bottom. Over that, there was an initial card that said, "Happy Anniversary, - To the best anniversary gift ever...." then he lifted that up and underneath that was another card that said, "meet your baby June 4, 2008" and under that card was the test! We both got teary eyed! :)

by Koala77

I already had a feeling that I was pregnant the week that I was supposed to get my period. The week came & went & no period. The following week, I decided to take a HPT on DH's bday. Before dinner, I took the test & hid the results. As we were getting into bed, I came up to DH w/the results behind my back asking him if he was ready for his gift. It was the best bday gift he had ever received!

by amui

we had been trying a while, so he knew the test date as well as I did. I'm not too good with delayed gratification, and I had a good feeling about this month, so a few days before the missed period date, I woke up early and decided to test. Not expecting anything really, I climbed back into bed and snuggled up with my sweetie. Unable to fall back to sleep, a few minutes later I told him to close his eyes b/c I had to turn on the light- and there it was- "PREGNANT!" I showed it to him, but he was still blury eyed- 'wha? OH!!!!' We snuggled back into bed and fell asleep wrapped up in each other.

by sperschy

I took my husband on the dinner cruise where he had proposed to me (pretending we were celebrating our anniversary) and took him up to the spot where he had given me the ring. I told him this time I had a gift for him and handed him a pacifier that I had been hiding in my purse all day. He was so excited!

by Hmdots

I found out we were pregnant on my husband's birthday. When the test showed up "pregnant" I ran right downstairs & gave him the stick. At first he thought it was a joke.

by Vet-Tech

I had elaborate plans...when it came down to it, I just ran out of the bathroom and shoved the stick in his face. LOL

by selsel29

I left the test next to his sink in the bathroom the morning I took it. He came into the bedroom and said he knew I was because I'd my period hadn't come yet (who says men aren't observant!) Then we hugged and he took a picture of it with his camera phone (but he's not allowed to make it his screensaver until I'm 3 months and we tell everyone!)

by Shan_te_xas

We found on on Valentine's Day!! I woke up at 4 in the morning and at 5:30 I took the test. I was so nervous!! DH was sleeping and when it came up positive, I went to him and woke him up by telling him that we were going to have a baby! He was so excited!!

by mrszarrilli2be

We both knew at the same time. We've practiced natural family planning (an observation system that is kind of like the ovulation calendar on this website- only more detailed. You use it to naturally prevent or achieve pregnancy) since we got married to hold off on getting pregnant right away, so we both always knew what stages my body was going through each month and began trying to concieve after 6 months of marriage- BINGO! :) It kinda took the fun out of suprising him, but I think that it's really special that we have gone through every second of this experience together. Baby number one is on his way any day now!!!

by rioleigh

My FI was at work when I took a home pregnancy test. When it said positive I immediately went to the drs office to confirm it. I stopped at a book store on the way home and got him "Your Pregnancy for Fathers to Be" and then made him a cute crafty card that said "You will be a great father some day..." and on the inside it said "around November 29, 2008. Yes.... I am sure!" etc. We both cried and laughed a little when he read it and then looked at me and said "I love you!" It was exactly how I wanted him to react... we had JUST come off BC the month before.

by loucynda

My husband is a huge Buckeye fan. So I took the HPT while he was at work and when it was positive, I ran to the store and found an ohio state buckeyes onsie that said, "I love my Daddy" and wrapped it up for him. When he came home I gave him the gift. I think it took him about 2 minutes or so to realize it wasn't for him and then he just smiled and gave me a hug and a kiss and said he was so happy. He's even more happy now that we just found out its a boy!

by greenwheel

I wrote him a card that said 'Dear Daddy: I can't wait to meet you in 9 months. Love, Baby' His eyes were as big as saucers and we both were laughing and crying. An unforgettable moment.

by HopefulGirlie

I went out and bought the movie "Knocked Up" and then wrote We are above the title. Then I handed it to him, and after his jaw dropped and he goes, "Really?" I handed him the positive pregnancy test. We were both smiling from ear to ear.

by chelsiebells

i out the positive test next to the bathroom sink and when DH came home with our 2 year old on there "father/son" day I sent him up to the bathroom and told him something happened ( he thought i broke something) he saw the test sitting there and before he even looked to see if the test was positive or not he just grabbed me and hugged me as tight as he could while we were all still in the bathroom

by 2_B_A_WIFE

by 2_B_A_WIFE

Well, I told him I was picking up the test, but I told him I was going to take it the next day. I got the results and I couldn't believe them, so I took it out with the instruction sheet and said, does that look like a plus sign to you? He said, "I think it does, I love you!" Then we both went into shock! 3 days later and the shock hasn't worn off. We're happy but scared.

by Mommapen

I bought my husband the book, "What to expect when your wife is expanding". I wrapped it up and placed it under the sheets. When he got into bed he was excited to see a present and even more excited about the news.

by BRANDLES0478@AOL.COM

My husband teased me when I came home with anything baby-related, and said it was fine as long as he didn't come home and find baby furniture all over until we were actually pregnant. So, when I took the test, I resisted the urge to tell him right away so I could wait for him to go to work (2 days! I found out on a Saturday morning!) and then my friend, my mom and I went and got the crib that my husband and I had picked out a while ago. I got an "I love my daddy" bib and a card, and left them on top of the crib box in the soon-to-be baby's room. When he got home, I told him I had a present for him and pointed him upstairs.....He got it!

by LaurenandMatt2008

My husband was in the shower when I took the test - I really wasn't expecting it to be positive. I just stood there in the humid bathroom staring at the test with a grin on my face. Finally, i just poked the test into the shower and waited for him to notice. He was just as excited as I was! But the downer was that he made me stand there in the bathroom and wait for him to finish so that I wouldn't go tell my sister, who was in the living room at the time! Don't worry - we were plenty teased when we exited the bathroom together after about fifteen minutes of giggling behind closed doors!

by mrsekins

I was just 1 day late when I took the test and I only bought and took the test becuase my husband suggested it. I really did not think I was pregnant. After we bought it we went home had supper and started watching a movie. When I need to pee finally I snuck away into the bathroom. The test showed positive almost immediately. I walked out of the restroom and said "Um, honey, where are those instructions again?" The look of shock totally gave me away and he came over and gave me the biggest best hug forever as I just bawled! It was so exciting and scary all at the same time! :o)

by rcollier_17

We've had the most fun telling parents though. We live further away so we did it over the phone (yuck!), but it turned out really well. We sent them an email with a birthday invite attached and the birthday invite said : YOU'RE INVITED TO A BIRTHDAY! WHEN: Sometime around November 22 Where: A hospital in ___ ______ GUEST OF HONOR: Baby Collier RSVP: With lots of hugs and kisses and then there was a picture of the positive pregnancy tests on the bottom. We labeled the invite House and told them that it was a picture of a house we're looking at buying. It was HILARIOIUS to hear them reading the invite and then realizing what it meant! I highly recommend this for fun and shock factor!! :o)

by rcollier_17

My husband insisted on being there with me when I took the test. He was in the kitchen and I was in the bathroom. The second line on the test barely started to show. I thought I was seeing things! I called him in there and asked him if there was a line there and he asked "That pink one?" We just looked at each other, he grabbed me in his arms and hugged me forever as I bawled and shook with excitement!!Now our little soldier (just like daddy) is on the way!

by dizzzy_chik99

My husband and I actually found out at the same time! I had gone to the GYN for a routine check up and to ask questions about trying to get pregnant. AFter the test she asked me to take a pregnancy test. A few minutes after she did the test she sweetly said " I think ur pregnant." I burst into tears of joy and my husband grinned from ear to ear! He came up to me, hugged and kissed me . . . we've been on cloud nine ever since!!

by Walleska

I had suspected I was pregnant for a few weeks but couldn't get a test to turn positive. I got this strange period and had been having a lot of pregnancy symptoms so I took another test at about 7 in the morning after I let the dog out. I ran upstairs, turned on the light, jumped in bed and yelled "I'm not crazy! I'm pregnant! I'm pregnant!" I was 6 weeks pregnant when we found out.

by megjr8

I had stopped my Birth Control in March, 1 month prior to our wedding to allow by body to adjust and prepare for pregnancy. Little did I know that it would not take much trying. I had a normal period that started right on time March 15th. As the wedding approached and with all the stress, by the second week in April I was expecting my period. I had cramps and breast tenderness like always but was running a little late. I took a test before my bachelorette party on April 18th just to be safe and I was very sure it was negative. Not thinking anything about it the week passed and we were married on the 25th. The next week with still no period I got suspicious and took another test. I kept getting the same cryptic line results, but felt still more cramps and thought for sure my period was well on it's way however late. Wednesday after the wedding after talking to some girlfriends who already have kids about how I was feeling I decided to schedule an appointment. Sure enough, 4 days after my wedding we were 4 weeks pregnant! All that long term planning and preparation was for naught! Now all my friends joke and call me "firtile Myrtle" the wonder woman who get pregnant immediately after stopping 10 years of birth control!

by BSypolt12

when we first started trying, i had gotten a tshirt that had a picture of an oven on it with the word "bun" on the inside of the oven. the day that i had a positive test, i changed into the shirt once we were both home for the evening and just went about my business. when he first walked by he giggled and said the shirt was cute, but it took a minute before it really hit him. once it sunk in, he screamed and hugged me:)

by chickee.boom

Me and my boyfriend are totally excited. The sign that I truly am pregnant are getting stronger by the day. I just can't wait to take my test in another week!

by audrac@sesco.biz

I thought he'd be awake when I got home YESTERDAY but he wasn't. I had purchased a baby card and a newborn diaper filled with Kit-Kat (his favorite). Since he was still sleeping, I set up the video camera in the corner to catch his reaction. I woke him up and asked him to check out the card that I bought for the baby shower I had to go to today. But inside, after the inscription, is said "Congratulations Daddy :)" and then "Michael, I'm pregnant. And I can't wait to have your baby." He was really happy... after the shock!

by LittleLizzieD

I am not pg yet, but I have a jersey from my FI's favorite MLB team. When I get my positive test, I am going to give him the jersey that says DADDY on the back and the number 1! :)

I had previously bought a cute onesie that said "I have been practing in mommys belly" with a picture of a dirt bike rider! :) DH loves to ride dirt bikes. So after I took the HPT I wrapped the onesie up and when he got home from work he opened it up and looked for a min, they said are you pregnant? :) It was a neat moment!

by FutureMrs.Haver

My husband is a big Boston Bruins fan. I bought a Bruins onesie and presented it to him without saying a word. He got it right away!

by abloom531

I got just a white bib and got those little sticky foam letters and spelled out "guess what" on the bib. Then i wrapped it up in a gift bag and gave it to him. He was so excited he grabbed me and gave me a huge hug and we cried happy tears together. Then we decided to make 3 more bibs to tell our parents in the same way. It was a very fun way to tell DH and our families!

by candygirlsisland

We are still trying to conceive - but I have a plan!!....I am hoping that when my hubby comes home from work I will have 2 champagne glasses out filled with milk! I know he will understand right away!

by lweber84

Our favorite baseball team had won the NLDS the night before, so the day I got the BFP I stopped at a sporting goods store on my way home from work and picked up a little Phillies onesie. When my DH came home that night I casually mentioned that I was driving past the sporting goods store and thought of him. As he was eagerly digging into the bag I held up the test. He just grabbed me into a big bear hug and then had to sit. He was in a state of shock for a solid 48 hours! :-)

by kymasmith

DH is in the USCG so he was on the boat and I had just finished my college finals the day before. I woke up to take the pregnancy test and expected a BFN and to my surprise it was a BFP! I couldn't told my emotions back and wait for him to come home so I text him that he was going to be a daddy!

by passion_fruit08

I only buy ginger ale when Im pregnant, so Im going to get some put it in the fridge and see how long it takes him to figure it out.

by leashw

My hubs bday was coming up, and I thought I might be pregnant. So I waited FIVE extra days to take the test, so I could take it on his birthday and tell him then. I got up early, got the positive test, woke him up, and gave him a small birthday card I had made that said, "Happy Birthday! You + me + BABY makes 3!" He was shocked.

by kayaybee

We love pasta, so my husband said that whenever I cooked with Prego sauce, he'd know it meant we were having a baby. So I had a jar in the back of the pantry, and on the morning I got the positive result, I called him home from work (with some excuse). When he walked in I had pasta boiling on the stove with the Prego sauce next to it (at 9:30am) ha ha. It took him a minute to make the connection, but then he smiled, hugged me and we both took the day off to celebrate!

by raelinds

I was in total shock when I found out. I took a test in the morning and had to wait until 4:30 for DH to be available to talk. I sent him a text asking him to call home. When he finally called, all I said was "So I took a test". I could hear him grinning through the phone as he said "And we're having a baby???" It was so unplanned, but perfect!

by tiaduck

I like to make baby blankets for all my friends that get pregnant, and I had just made one for my cousin, when I found out I was pregnant. DH was at work, so I ran to the fabric store and got boy and girl fabric, had them laying on the bed when he came home. He asked who are you making a blanket for now? And I said US!! The I showed him my BFP test. He hugged me forever and said REALLY??!! He was sooo excited! :-)

by LMD21

I did it the OLD way, we were honeymooning in New Orleans last December, 6 months after our wedding, I knew I was pregnant since the minute it happened (Nov 26), had to wait until December 24th (when my hubby & I exchange Xmas gifts), in an amazing/romantic hotel room, with a tiny Xmas tree, I gave him first gift & right after that the second one - the biggest one ever - he opened little paper bad & pulled out a pair of cute white baby shoes & said - are you really pregnant??? We kissed & hugged & snuggled all night - the best moment of our lives - no doubts!!!

by mlig2

First two pregnancies I honestly couldn't see the second line on the test clearly so I asked him his opinion. LOL He looked at me and said "um yea there's a second line there!" There was a brief silence and then laughs.

by jnsochoa

We got pregnant on our 3rd round of IUI. It was Christmas morning when the doc told me to take the test. My husband said not to wake him up if the test was negative. I was so nervous to take the test alone. As soon as I got a positive result, I started blaring "Knocked Up" by the Kings of Leon. I went to the bed and tapped him, and he instantaneously said..."Really!!??" Best Christmas EVER!!!!

by teddypool

I had planned on telling my husband by getting him for Christmas tickets to the Phillies father's day game (he's a huge Phillies fan) and tell him that this is a great way to spend his first father's day as a dad. But I got impatient and saw the perfect opportunity a few days before Christmas on a day he went to the doctor to have an ultrasound on his leg and I had been at my first OB appointment where she did an ultrasound. He was telling me all about his appointment that day when I told him "you're not the only one who had an ultrasound today...." he couldn't have been happier! Plus he still go this baseball tickets.

by kim091

I wrapped up the test stick shortly after it gave the "pregnant" result and gave it to my husband for Halloween with a card that read, "no tricks, just treats".

by staceymaszera

I was already late and had been feeling poorly so I picked up a test at the store with my husband. So he knew about them, we're pretty open about everything. Anyway, I took one right when we got home that afternoon, but it was inconclusive. I thought maybe it was because it wasn't first pee. So I took one the next morning when I woke up. My husband was already up and trying to keep busy on the computer. I waited the full time in the bathroom and then some. Then I stepped out the bathroom to find my husband standing in the hallway in anticipation. He said "Well?" Somewhat stunned still, I said we're pregnant. My husband actually hopped and cheered. lol It was surprising because we weren't trying and although we both wanted children someday, we had figured it be another couple of years first. I'll never forget his reaction though. So out of character for my 6'5" husband.

by mamabird721

I took a test while my husband was at work. We had often joked about how our poor kids would be hairy, with big noses, bad teeth, and bad eyes, so when he got home I started making conversation about that. We were having a pretty good laugh about it when I said, "well, we'll find out in about 9 months." He was shocked and it was perfect.

by etizzel

It was my husband that suggested we get a test, so he knew I was talking it. I waited till the next morning and got up early. He wasnt up yet so I got to wake him with the good news. I wanted to do something more. But we got pregnant before we started trying so I waited til Valentine's Day and gave him a shirt I had made that said "#1 expecting dad" He loves it!

by Mellach23

I bought him a congratulations card. He didn't know what he was being congratulated on. The card said something like all your hard work, dilligence and commitment has all paid off Congratulations!! I wrote a little poem refering to us being parents to be and tossed him a pair of baby shoes. It took a second to sink in, but after a minute he smiled and said "you're pregnant"

by SonJoria

my love is always telling a tacky red neck joke about a boyfriend showing up late for a date and finding her daddy out on the front porch with a shotgun and he says "guess who else is late?" when i realized i was late, i used those words. the next day we took a test to confirm, and he ran around with the biggest smile on his face for weeks!

by tellyweaver

My hubby is in Navy basic training and has no idea I'm pregnant but I bought a little "dress whites" sailor onesie and will give it to him as a gift when he graduates. I can't wait :)

by Larson2010

I kinda gave it away to DH in an text when he was a work. I couldn't hold it in. When he came home, I told him to close his eyes and I handed him a baby hat and a note from the "baby" then told him to open his eyes. Needless to say, he was thrilled and still is.
