Q&A: What don't I need to pack for the hospital?

What don't I need to pack in my hospital bag?

What don't I need to pack in my hospital bag?

The Bump Expert

Good question. We put this one to the new moms on our message boards, and here's what they had to say:

"I didn't use any of the PJs I packed! Hospital gowns were just fine for breastfeeding." -- MLE21707

"I didn't use my sexy hot pink towels -- I decided to let the blood get on the hospital's gross towels. I didn't use my own underwear either -- I used their mesh ones." -- Kimba1185

"I did not need all the baby clothes I packed. In the hospital they kept him swaddled and in a t-shirt (they supplied) and diaper. We only needed I coming home outfit. I also took my own pads, and didn't need them. The hospital ones were 'heavy duty' and worked much better than any I had." -- HappyTXChick

"I didn't use my socks -- I had so many hot flashes I didn't need them!" -- gisellems

"Definitely didn't need my own nightgown, underwear or toiletries (shampoo, etc.)." -- nielio

"I didn't use my big pink fluffy robe to wear over my hospital gown, but I never did walk around during labor either." -- RednekPrincess

"I brought the maternity jeans that fit me when I was seven months pregnant, but did not fit when I was nine months pregnant. They still did not fit two days after I gave birth." -- dimake

"Leave the 'entertainment items' (movies, magazines, CDs) at home. I was dumb enough to put in a movie while I was in labor, and the nurse and DH were more interested in watching it than paying attention to me!" -- mrsrsh

re: Q: Hospital bag don't pack?

When I gave birth to my daughter I actually brought a video game console from home. I was induce so I knew that I was going to be there for a while. I was a nice distraction for the early part of my labor, but my gaming skills seemed to wane as I came to the end of my labor. It was really the only thing that I brought with me, and it was a VERY good idea., and thankfully the birthing center I was at was very accomadating. I even had one nurse (who was a guy which was weird when I was having the baby) come in and play games with me for an hour b/c I was the only patient in the birthing center at the time!

re: Q: Hospital bag don't pack?

The only things I actually used (I was induced at 4am and had my son at 9pm) were my sodoku book, my cell phone, the laptop and my toothbrush. You pretty much only need a going home outfit for both you and the baby, the hospital has just about everything else.

Q&A: What don't I need to pack for the hospital?

I'm bringing everything I can, because what a lot of hospitals don't tell you is that insurance will not cover those "extra" items that you use while you are there. I was lucky enough that my nurse told me before hand so I'm well prepared.

Seriously, the lighter you pack the better! But do remember your own pillow. I was induced and was in labor for 41 hours plus time after the baby was born and I never could have made it sleeping (or trying too!) on the hospital pillows.

When you bring your own pillow (highly recommended) make sure you put a bright pillowcase on it, otherwise it may get mixed up and taken when they clean up the room! I didn't use any of the books or anything, but bring a laptop and/or music.

I am bringing one pair of decent looking pajamas--it's a scheduled c section, and I'll be there a while, knowing that people will be taking pictures. Each time, I have also bought good smelling toiletries. That first shower will feel good--it will feel even better if you don't use the hospital soap.

Q&A: What don't I need to pack for the hospital?

I hated the robe and slippers I took to the hospital because they were fuzzy and I was SO hot! I am taking more photo friendly pj's (one for delivery and one for after)this time cus I didnt realize how many pictures would be taken of me after delivery. I wish I had taken my blow dryer cus going to bed with wet hair that night was annoying. I think I am also gonna take a book this time cus I had a lot of downtime with my last baby.

Q&A: What don't I need to pack for the hospital?

When my wife was giving birth to our first child I was far away, in Toronto. After she said she's in labor I packed everything up with the help of an international moving company and I came home in the same day. She was so happy and I knew that all the efforts were worth it.
