Q&A: Good music for labor?

Some of my friends have played music during their labor and delivery, and it seems like a good idea. What songs should I include on my playlist?

Re: Some of my friends have played music during their labor and delivery, and it seems like a good idea. What songs should I include on my playlist?

The Bump Expert

You can’t plan how labor and delivery are going to progress, but you can prepare the soundtrack. Multiple studies show that music, by promoting relaxation, can help cut down on pain; in other words, you definitely should have that iPod in the delivery room.

Here are some ideas for creating your personal childbirth playlist in case you want to listen to something other than the anesthesiologist's voice and your partner’s encouragement.

If you’ve been crying for 40 weeks and the scrapbook is already huge...
“Isn’t She Lovely,” by Stevie Wonder
“Beautiful Day," by U2
“Daughters,” by John Mayer
“Father and Son,” by Cat Stevens
“Hold On,” by Wilson Phillips

If you prefer black onesies...
“Push It,” by Salt-N-Pepa
“Snow (Hey Oh),” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Love Stoned,” by Justin Timberlake
“Hey Baby,” by No Doubt
“Stronger,” by Kanye West

If yoga class and Lamaze have you feeling just fine...
“Three Little Birds,” by Bob Marley & The Wailers
“Comfortably Numb,” by Pink Floyd
“O-o-h Child,” by the Five Stairsteps
“(They Long To Be) Close to You,” by Carpenters
“One Sweet World,” by Dave Matthews Band

If you conceived on vacation...
“Margaritaville,” by Jimmy Buffet
“Better Together,” by Jack Johnson
“Somewhere over the Rainbow,” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole
“Paradise,” by Sade
“Soak up the Sun,” by Sheryl Crow

Q&A: Good music for labor?

nature and ocean music

marykay23 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

It kinda depends on what kind of music helps you relax. I prefer more new age stuff and nature/ocean sounds.

Eveah |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

any calming sounds ex: sounds of water, birds, wind, etc

imanid0 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Jack Johnson! The Curious George Soundtrack and a few of my other favorite Jack Johnson songs is what I put on my iPod playlist. He has such a calming sound. Everyone that walked in loved it and thought it was good music for labor.

Neskicks |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

That was a useless article. Awful. Music if you conceived on vacation? You are officially out of ideas!

finfinfin |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I like the idea of nature sounds for a calm labor and some femme fatale songs by Madonna for the final push.

jooleywooley |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I plan on hearing lots of John Mayer while I'm in labor. He always has a way of calming me.

TrevorsMommy07 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I all really depends on what calms you... Be it rock, hard rock, metal or classic..Its really matters on what calms you. I prefer rock myself, but I honestly don't know if I'm going to need a playlist for my labor..

ZumbayxX |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

country music!!

kimbetz |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I think you should listen to whatever makes you calm. Personally, I will be listening to Pendulum!

kat1791 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

What ever relaxes you on a stressful day.

Faren77 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I probably will be doing a mix of Coldplay, Norah Jones, John Mayer. Nice, relaxing music.

blueyd1 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I thought I wanted to listen to music but it turns out I wanted complete silence. You will just have to wait and see when you're there!

BethanyLyn82 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I never thought about music during labor and delivery but it sounds like a great idea!

klaceys |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Forget music! I'm taking my "Friends" dvds to keep me distracted and laughing when I want to scream.

DianaPilcher |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

play whatever music you listen to on a daily basis...music with lyrics is nice cause it gives you something to focus on. I personally like industrial rock music so I had Nine Inch Nails playing during my first labor....nice angry music to push to.

keseaton |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

i prefer some enya or enigma, bob marley or Sade... something relaxing... loud music makes me wanna get up and dance and so does pop music

roxy751638 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I went to From Here To Maternity, a preconception workshop sponsored by Emerson hospital. They said that the craziest thing they have seen yet in their new "ipod enabled delivery rooms" is a woman screaming to Ozzy Osbourne songs while her baby is crowning. Ha, ha, ha, ha, that's my kind of music. How about "Never Gonna Stop Me" by Rob Zombie, "It's On" by Korn, or "Mama, I'm Comin Home" by Ozzy Osbourne.

mommywannabe2011 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Just take your computer, iPod, mp3 player with what is already on it. You might take just one "branch" of music and find out half-way through that it's not the music you're "craving." Give yourself gobs of options. It's better that way.

sperotobe |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Try some nice soothing jazz. Jazz music is very relaxing, especially if its classical jazz. Thats what my DH and I are going to do. Good luck :)

Ms.kburrell |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I'm choosing some lullabies and worship music I've been listening to on my ipod throughout the whole pregnancy. Every time I listen to them, I feel calm, so I know it will help during labor.

lynseylane |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

My last labor & delivery I used Enya and songs similar to what she does. It was so incredibly helpful for me (because I delivered all natural) when the pain got the most intense. Also, through out my pregnancy when I got stressed, and when I would rock my other son to sleep at night, I would listen to my CD. By the time I was in labor, I was so use to the music I didn't have to concentrate on it, or trying to stay calm. It worked so well for me, that all the nurses thought I had changed my mind and gotten pain medicine. Whatever music works for you, I would suggest listening to it throughout your entire pregnancy as a relaxing/calming tool. Then you and baby will be able to relax when it's time. :)

AshKozell |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I agree with those who say bring a variety because you won't know what will help you until the moment is there. I listen to any and every kind of music out there so I know it will be very difficult for me to choose just one genre. I could definitely picture myself wailing with Ozzy Ozbourne, bumping with Biggie Smalls, chilling with Jill Scott, or bopping with Cindy Lauper while crowing. It would be a great scene if I decide to video tape the delivery. :-) BabyFetus Ticker

jfleu03 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I have all my music on my Ipod so I will have options. But I plan on trying to plan some Keane for relaxing and Franz Ferdinand if I want something faster.

schnelly |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I've been putting my ipod on autofill and listening on my way to work. When I hear a song that I think would be good for the birth, I add it to a playlist or write it down. I'll have a big long list by the time baby is ready to come out! Although . . . I do like one poster's idea of her Friends DVDs.

molliiieee |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I love Father and Son by Cat Stevens, but I think that is an awful choice for labor/delivery. The whole song is them having an argument!!!

RinnyAnne |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

it's my firsts child, but i would say to listen to light classical, or meditation music, like nature music. It will sooth and relax you... :) good luck to everyone...

trainingthedog |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I listened to Enya and it really help me to relax. I also added some songs from artist like Enya. I put Enya in Pandora.com and set up a station and then wrote down the songs I liked and bought them from ITunes.

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I will find out this week whether i am pregnant or not and I am already thinking through which FRIENDS episodes i will be watching :) I think music is a great idea. It completely calms me down and makes me just chill :) Im definately a base and pumping music girl. If anyone has any ideas that are not death metal or anything "dark". no offense to anyone who likes that :) but i want some fast passed music for when i do give birth

kaylaortiz09 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

My Husband and I will probably have on our playlist TOOL & Tiesto. We're young, & that's our style. Haha ;)

SW33TH3ART |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

The truth is that no matter what your musical style or preference, during labor and delivery you want something relaxing. The greatest pain from labor comes from the mother being tense and not being able to relax. So even if you love, love, LOVE STP's "Plush" .... it might not be one you want to play while you're trying to "PUSH" LOL

dhcp2011 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I'm planning to play "Eye of the Tiger", the theme from Rocky, and a few selections from Glee...

susanamarina |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Lady GaGa was my labor coach.

omfg_itsbridemary |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I like “Push It,” by Salt-N-Pepa but seriously, even if there'd have been music i wouldn't have heard it above the sound of my screaming!

Lexivip |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I created a Birthing Mix...it all depends on the style of music you like. I basically have mine set around Easy Listening, with a Child/Parent theme to it as well as love songs. Luthor Vandross, Sarah McLachalan, U2 (The Sweetest Thing) Dido, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd (Comfortably Numb & Mother), one Led Zepplin song I even have one Christmas Song in there by Barbara Streisand called the Gift...it's all about a tiny newborn child. LOVE IT!!

jennife0 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Deep Forest or Enigma all the way. I love the new age sound with a twist of a good beat to get you going into pushing mode.

I love how other people thought to take their "Friends" DVDs with them. I have been saying I want to watch either the episode where Phoebe or Rachel are in labor. Something to look forward to!

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Personally, I'll be rocking out to The Who, Coldplay and RUSH. Maybe I'll throw in some Beatles, but I'm thinking any music that calms me down and makes me think of things I associate with that song will be a godsend.

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I'm a huge music fan but during contractions I couldn't listen to anything without getting annoyed. I think it really depends on you and where you are in your labor.

shesanopenbook |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I went with John Mayer and the legendary Bob Marley for my first. They got me through a long labor. I'll probably add some Braddah IZ this time around!

leslieanne2104 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I love musicals, so, during my labor for my first son I listened to Phantom of the Opera. It gave me something else to focus on, and something that I could sing along to in my head while pushing. I think that I am going to do the same thing this time around, it might not be a musical, but I want it to be something that I can be singing along to in my head.

babyhubbardinme |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I'm in the process of making three different playlists, one for each of general labor, hard labor (pushing) and after baby is here. Who knows what will actually happen when the time comes but it's better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Right?

G0dd3ssv3st4 |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I am planning on brining my iPhone and using the Pandora app. (I hope I get a connection or I'll have to play mp3's). The Pandora stations that help me are: Calm Meditation (instrumental meditation songs) Jack Johnson radio Lounge Mode Radio (like a hotel lounge modern mix. low key but not sleepy) Lullaby Themes (great lullaby songs for baby. Helps me get focused on being a mom) Soundscapes and Lullabies I have Loved You (ambient piano meditation mix) Norah Jones radio Standards/Vocal (Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald. These just put me in a good mood) I like the previous poster's idea about creating mixes for each stage of labor. I still don't think I have learned enough about the stages yet.

ryanmichele |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I, too, was disappointed by the article, but found some good ideas in the replies. What I'm wondering -- since this is my first baby -- should my collecting of music really focus ALL on relaxing stuff, or, would some stuff to energize perhaps also we useful? Thoughts? Thanks!

dmkvw |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I am being induced on the 28th this is my first child and I am planning on listing to Debussy. It is just paino playing with no words but it helps me to relax so I am hoping it will help during labor.

Taraafc |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I happen to like classical music to relax to, and the Pandora app was a lifesaver during labor. I didn't have to think about a playlist and I had a string quartet keep everything relatively calm all day. Plus, every nurse and doctor that came into the room commented on how they wished more people would play music during labor, and how it completely changed the room's atmosphere (in a good way).

Kryzzle |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I put a lot of music I had on my "CHILL" playlist, a few artists were Bob Marley, Jack Johnson, Death Cab for cutie, Colbie Caillat, John legend, J-Minus (recommend this Seattle band BIG TIME, LOVE THEM!!!), Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Zac Brown Band... A whole mix of songs but they are good and help relax me... :)

corrieg |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

The absolute best thing you can listen too is Jewel's Lullaby CD. It is amazing!

D_Ready_B |

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I had 3 playlists for my labor with my son & wound up not listening to a thing because nothing happened the way I hoped. I had an emergency c-section & after seeing my son, I woke up in recovery. I'm hoping to have a list of songs that I hope I'm not sick of...I'm thinking mellow or fast-paced...depending on my mood. Looking forward to a VBAC this time & going au natural...drug free. Whatever keeps me focused, in "the zone" and calm is what I'm going for... Just don't forget your power cords ladies! It would suck to be mid-push & have your music stop...same with your camera batteries! DH was fumbling with batteries in the middle of the OR with our son because the batteries died when he went to take the first pic. True story!

Q&A: Good music for labor?

Radiohead is my favorite band to begin with but I think they would be a great choice. They have a great mix of upbeat songs for pushing, but so many awesome chill songs. Check them out, they'll def be playing when I'm in labor.

Q&A: Good music for labor?

I'm a music therapist and I always tell people to seek out a music therapist who is trained in labor and delivery. Since L&D progress can be affected by your emotional state, you want to make sure you have music that will support you emotionally at each stage of labor as well as easing anxiety and providing distraction. What you like and enjoy is first and foremost, but there are a lot of other factors that you may not be thinking of (instrumentation, timbre, tempo.) A lot of research has gone into developing programs and guidelines when music therapist are working with clients. A music therapist trained in this particular area should be able to help you. You may be able to find one with a search engine search of "music therapy in labor and delivery" and your area. Best wishes!
