Man showers or "dadchelor" parties?

My partner wants to have a “last hurrah” before baby’s born. Are other dads-to-be having “man showers”?

The Bump Expert

Yes! Man shower. Dadchelor party. Dad-to-be’s last hurrah. Whatever you want to call it, guys are doing it. Sure, this new rite of passage isn’t for everyone -- in fact, we did a survey and found that one in five Bumpies said their guys had been to one of these pre-papa events -- but your guy is certainly not alone. Think of it like a bachelor party, part two. Your guy’s life is changing just as much as yours is, so it’s not just an excuse for a little guy time, it’s also a celebration in anticipation of the new baby.

Why guys are doing it

This new trend follows on the heels of babymoons, where expectant couples took a mini vacation as one last romantic trip before their lives became diapers, midnight feedings and minivans. Combine this with men celebrating fatherhood later in life. Men have more disposable income and more time to take a last-minute weekend trip, sleep in, lounge over the Sunday paper and hang with their friends -- and to tell the truth, they’re probably a little freaked out over losing these luxuries when they become dads. So maybe your guy wants one more night of freedom, and maybe he wants a little bit of attention. Face it, with your bump and your shower, you’ve been getting most of it lately.

What happens at a man shower

These celebrations can be huge blowouts -- a trip to Vegas or Mexico -- or a simple fishing or golf trip, barbecue or cigar party. It all depends on the guy. We’ve heard the festivities can include a baby bottle beer-drinking contest (really), or even better, the dad-to-be buys a keg and each guy who attends brings his “entry fee” -- a pack of diapers -- in order to partake.

Some Bumpies revealed the details of a coworker’s “Diaper Bash.” “They got together at a restaurant where there was a drink special, and each brought diapers and wipes for the soon-to-be father. Food, beer, diapers…they had a blast,” wrote Reygee66. Others mentioned their guys hosting poker parties and golf outings while they enjoyed their own showers. Pinkpigeon wrote, “My SO is planning on going fishing with friends on the day of one of my showers.”

Oh, and we know at least one celeb dad who had a man shower. Kourtney Kardashian’s party-boy boyfriend, Scott Disick, celebrated a night of male bonding in 2009 before the arrival of his son, Mason. His friends Kevin Federline, musician Cisco Adler and rapper Shwayze dined and clubbed at a few Miami hot spots. Supposedly, Federline gave Disick some fatherly advice at the bash. (Yeah, really.)

Gifts (or lack thereof)

We doubt the guys will gather around the dad-to-be while he opens boxes filled with onesies and baby blankets. Instead, most guys will buy him a beer, some diapers or just pay his travel expenses if it’s a trip. For men, it’s less about gifts and more about male bonding.

The caveat

We say go ahead, give your guy’s plans to have a man shower your seal of approval. But we would give him one rule: Have it early -- as in, at least a month before your due date. You don’t want to go into labor while your guy is out at a bar or, worse, while he’s in another city!

My mom had a girly baby shower for me so I wanted to do something specialfor DH. So I threw him a "Beer and Diaper" Party as a SURPRISE. I put on the invite to bring a pack of beer and a pack of diapers as "admission" and made boy friendly food and had sports on the tv. He really enjoyed just hanging out with the guys and drinking some beers..... and a bonus we got TONS of diapers!!

When I threw a shower for my sister-in-law, my husband threw a party for the guys. It was kind of great really. My husband and his brother have 7 more brothers, so there were a lot of guys to celebrate. Mostly they just played games and hung out with each other. It was informal, but when I had my shower and my husband couldn't be in town because he's in the Army, my bro-in-laws were totally bummed out that there wouldn't be a party for them. I think it's great for the guys!

My fiancee's birthday is 5 weeks before we are set to deliver. He has full permission to go out with the boys that day, drink, play golf and just in general "goof off". It will be the last birthday he has before becoming a daddy. Not to mention I believe it's owed to him because though I've been the one carrying the bundle of joy, after the 6 weeks I'm going back to work on strictly overnight shifts as an EMT. Meaning at his 2 daylight jobs he will be exhausted because he will be up for feedings/changings. So I think it's acceptable for him to have this one last bash.

I've been hearing a lot about the men have "diaper parties". The guy friends supply th diapers and the dad to be will supply food and probably beer. I am planning a diaper party for my husband for our second child. Such a great idea!!! :)

We are doing a Fetus Party. Like a baby shower but for my husband and his friends. BBQ, Beer, and baby diapers or anything the guys would like to get us. They know we really like firefighter theme toys. Some of them have mentioned that they also got us something that the baby and Dh can use. I think ti's easy to forget that guys get excited about babies as well! They already plan on taking my son out on their outings to the park.

For our first baby my husband had a diaper shower. The guys brought beers, diapers and wipes. I had made up a bunch of hamburger patties and my bro-in-law made wings. The guys played video games and watched tv. He had a blast and we got a TON of diapers. Enough for her first 7 months!

My hubby isn't having a "man shower" but he has been taking every advantage he can to get in last minute fishing trips, both with friends and his brother and brother in law, but also by himself so he can reflect on everything. He's also been on a hiking and camping kick. He says he wants to get it out of his system before the baby comes, lol. I think every guy needs to do something like this ... I mean, in between work, doctor appointments, and shopping for itty bitty baby things, he needs some man time!!!

I absolutely will have a "beer and britches" party for my husband when the time comes! A 12 pack and a box of pampers gets you in to a guys only night of beer pong, man food, and football! Sounds great to me!!

We will be throwing a DIAPER PARTY BBQ for my husband. Among other activities, there will be poker tables where the buy in is packaged diapers. The more diapers they bring, the more poker chips they'll get in exchange for the diapers to play poker with. Prizes will be awarded to the winners!

Man showers are the best way to get a year or two worth of diapers. Just tell the men to bring diapers and what size/type each person should get and let them party on. I didn't have to buy diapers for my DD until she was in pullups. Saves looooots of money.

I think it sounds like a GREAT IDEA! Just because we carry the baby we get a shower...(which I wish was slightly less girly).... but they don't get anything for all the help and support they put in.... I already planned on having my SO's guy friends take him out to party or throw a BBQ but this is even better.... FREE DIAPERS & WIPES! Can you say AWWWWWESOME?!?!?!?! Besides he's gonna have to "grow-up" really fast and there won't be much party time for the next several......... forevers? lol Go Guys!

My husband and his 6 friends are going on a "Father's Eve" weekend to hang out and relax together - it was my idea, and I know he will enjoy it! The only rule I enforce is that he has to schedule it earlier than my 34th week (just in case!) He is super excited about the weekend away, and that makes me happy!

I love that my DH had a "last hurrah" with his guy friends! They chartered a boat and went deep sea fishing. He really enjoyed having a couple days to unwind and be away from all things baby-related! Bonus- he came home relaxed and eager to help finish the nursery! Another fun idea for first-time dads is the "beer and diaper shower." Basically all the guys (and future grandpas) meet up at a favorite brew pup for happy hour and have some laughs. Each guy brings a pack of diapers for dad-to-be, but that is really the extent of any "shower" type activity. It could be construed as a thinly veiled excuse for a guys night out, but who cares? I need my girls nights out just as badly!

A Dadchelor party sounds like such an awesome idea! My boyfriend has come to every appointment, picked out baby clothes, and sends me name ideas all day. He even reminds me to take my prenatals. I would LOVE to give him something for him, to show I am so appreciative of how much love he has put into me and our baby. I think we'll do a poker game with a buy in of baby food or baby wipes, (we're doing fabric diapers). Any other ideas, let me know!

Man showers or "dadchelor" parties?

I'm throwing a surprise shower for my husband, but it's co-ed. I figure that between all of the bridal showers and excitement around 'me' for our wedding, the least I can do is center something around him for once. After all, knocking up your wife on the first try is quite rare and he's super proud lol. Why should all the focus be on me? Down with stereo-types.. let your s.o. have a party that's all about him, and not because it's his b-day.
