My mom has told me that the way to maximize clothes usage is to buy bigger because the baby will grow in to the clothes. For example, when baby is born buy for 0-3 months, then skip to 6-9 months. This way you save money, and you get more use out of them. Obviously, if you have a preemie like I was, you will need to buy preemie clothes. Actually, my mom used doll clothes for a couple weeks before I fit into traditional baby clothes.

Being that I used to work for BabyGap, one thing that people tend to forget is that if you do elect to buy bigger, keep in mind the season that baby will wear that outfit. For example, even with the best intentions in mind, you don't want to put your newborn baby in winter clothes now when the fleece jumper is sized for 3 to 6 months. You should definitely look at the weight of the baby, as well as the season vs the size. I have purchased a couple of newborn outfits, mostly 0-3 months, and some 6-9 months.. All of my babies have been a little over 8lbs. 0-3 months isn't too snug nor too big for a full term baby. You also need to look at the name brand. I would stay away from preemie clothes if you have a full term baby because you don't want nothing that fits just right on the baby. It could be too contricting. You need to think about comfort for the baby and plus if the clothing is too tight around the umbilical cord, that could present an issue. Think about the baby, not how cute the baby is in he/she's new fitting outfit.

As for Carters, their sizing runs like this. Preemie- up to 5 pounds, Newborn-up to 8 pounds, 3 months is more like 0-3 (8-12.5 pounds), 6 months is more like 3-6 (12.5-16.5 pounds), 9 months is 6-9 (16.5-20.5 pounds) 12, 18, and 24 months are generally the same as other stores?

my recommendation is don't take the tags off anything you buy. I didn't buy much, but I didn't want to get home and have to do laundry right way because I didn't have enough. My mom convienced me only to wash a few outfits that I bought and only right before he was due, good thing, before I came home from the hospital I had more clothes than I could ever use and within a few weeks I had mom take clothes back and exchange them for the next size up or store credit because I had so much. It was much easier to return my stuff, since I still had the receipt and I could get my cash back. I didn't really have to buy clothes until a year, I just saved store credit and people kept sending stuff. Also, don't take tags off anything anyone buys your for more than a few months off. A bunch of friends with kids bought me 12 month clothes because they knew I had too many baby clothes, unfortunately they bought them for the next summer, when he would be a year, but by May (the month of his 1st birthday) he was in 18-24months and never got to wear the summer clothes. It also depends on what brand the clothes are because every company has different sizing. I work at Osh Kosh and the newborn clothes there are 5-8 lbs and the 3 mo clothes are for 8-12 lbs. So make sure that you are checking the weight for each brand and don't assume they are all the same. Remember just like adult clothes, some brands of baby clothes run bigger than others and just because newborn was too big on one persons 8 lb baby doesn't mean the same will hold true for you. It's all about the brand you buy.

When she was born she was 6 lbs 4 oz and SWIMMING in the footed pajamas I had to take her home in! For example 0-3 months he outgrew at 2 months instead of 3. All babies will be different. The best thing to do is to plan for what is on the tag until baby comes. I would agree to keep tags on most of your seasonal outfits until your baby arrives. Big babies run in my family, so I bought mostly 0-3 month clothing. Since she was due in January I bought a lot of nice warm stuff. Well she ended up being 1 month early and needing preemie cloths for the first month. At 3 months she is just now fitting into her 0-3 month clothes, and it is spring and much too warm for a lot of the clothes I washed up and put away for her. I wish I had kept the tags on the warm stuff so I could exchange it for smaller sizes!
