What size clothes will my baby wear right after birth? And how quickly will he grow into a larger size?

Re: What size clothes will my baby wear right after birth? And how quickly will he grow into a larger size?

The Bump Expert

You're smart to think ahead -- we know tons of moms who ended up with piles of barely-worn newborn clothes, and many others who brought baby home to a wardrobe entirely stocked with too-big clothes. (Only wash and take the tags off of a few outfits before baby comes -- that way, if you get the wrong sizes, you can return or exchange.) More advice and experience from our users:

"My DD was 7 lbs. at birth, and was too small for newborn sized clothes at first. Most newborn/0-3 month clothes are for 8-12 lbs. After the first wash they shrunk down a bit but were still a little big on her. A few of her newborn clothes are becoming snug at 6 weeks. Most of her 0-3s still fit though." -Missa1128

"Jaime was 5 lbs., 15 oz. at birth and wore preemie clothing for the first month. She is nearly three months and currently still fits in 75% of her newborn clothes and wears some 0-3 month. The 3 month size is still a tiny bit too big." -expecting0207

"My DS is a fairly large baby. He was 8 lb., 15 oz. and 21.25 in. at birth, and now weighs 11 lbs, 8 oz. He did wear newborn clothing for a very short time -- about two weeks -- and is now mainly in 0-3 month sizes. However, because his legs are so long, any outfits that have full-length legs are 3-6 month size." -crk05

"My DS is 2 weeks old today and still wearing preemie sized clothing. He was born at 7 lbs., 2 oz. and was 20 in. long. There are some newborn onesies that fit, but most of them are still extremely big on him!" -ErinAGS04

"My DD was 7 lbs., 1 oz. at birth and is now 9 lbs., 9 oz. and mainly wears 0-3 month clothes." -Rossica+1

"He fit into 0-3 month clothes right away (over 8 lbs. at birth)." -SAB717

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My mom has told me that the way to maximize clothes usage is to buy bigger because the baby will grow in to the clothes. For example, when baby is born buy for 0-3 months, then skip to 6-9 months. This way you save money, and you get more use out of them. Obviously, if you have a preemie like I was, you will need to buy preemie clothes. Actually, my mom used doll clothes for a couple weeks before I fit into traditional baby clothes.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Even my almost 9 pound daughter wore newborn clothes for a while. 0-3 month clothes were too big for her. If you are worried about the cost of clothes you wont use that long, buy newborn and 0-3 month clothes second hand. I'd say maybe 2 newborn outfits and a handfull of newborn onesies and 5ish 0-3 month outfits with about 10 onesides

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I registered for only a few things in the newborn size because baby will grow so fast. Most of the clothes I registered for were 0-3 or 3-6 month sizes. I would think it would be better to have extra clothes the baby can grow into rather than too many they can't even wear when they are born!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Being that I used to work for BabyGap, one thing that people tend to forget is that if you do elect to buy bigger, keep in mind the season that baby will wear that outfit. For example, even with the best intentions in mind, you don't want to put your newborn baby in winter clothes now when the fleece jumper is sized for 3 to 6 months. Another rule of thumb is try not to buy based on baby's age but by poundage - most clothes are labelled 3 to 6 months OR 12 to 17 lbs.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

The trouble you will have mostly is with the legs not being long enough so onesies in 0-3 or NB will be fine but the footed sleepers they will grow out of more quickly so I would say buy only a few little ones and more bigger ones.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My sister is the one who recommended having a couple premie outfits. Both her boys were average sized babies, but that first week or so, newborn clothes were still too big. I would think one or two premie outfits, and a few newborn outfits should be washed and ready to wear. Everything else you can keep the tags on in case they need to be returned!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

my first son was almost 9lb when born and PREEMIE still fit best that first week and my second son was 9lb 2oz and he wore preemie too, for only about that 3 days we were in the hospital by the time we got home they were to small but i would reather have cloths that fit even if they dont last long than cloths that are to big

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I would only buy a few newborn sized clothes, that way if he/she is too large you aren't out much, and if he/she is too small you can always go to the store and buy more. My son was only 6 lbs so he wore NB for the first 2 1/2 months. I tried to prepare and worried I wouldn't have enough clothes that fit, my mom said "It's not like the stores close once you have your baby". So true! :)

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Both my first and my second child were large babies, 10-10 1/2 and 9-15. With my first I had to have my mom go to the store and buy something to take her home in, She went directly into 3-6 months. I'm kinda nervous about this one, I've been buying mostly larger items with a few smaller just in case the baby's not as large.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

You should definitely look at the weight of the baby, as well as the season vs the size. I have purchased a couple of newborn outfits, mostly 0-3 months, and some 6-9 months.. All of my babies have been a little over 8lbs. 0-3 months isn't too snug nor too big for a full term baby. You also need to look at the name brand. I would stay away from preemie clothes if you have a full term baby because you don't want nothing that fits just right on the baby. It could be too contricting. You need to think about comfort for the baby and plus if the clothing is too tight around the umbilical cord, that could present an issue. Think about the baby, not how cute the baby is in he/she's new fitting outfit.

Sleepers, sleepers, sleepers!!! My daughter lived in sleepers for the first couple of months. She was 6lbs 15oz at birth and wore newborn sized clothes for 2 weeks and 0-3 month clothes for about a month.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My son weighed 7 lbs at birth and the 0-3 month clothes were too big for the first month. I recommend having at least a few newborn outfits, just to get you thru those first few weeks, unless you have a big baby, you might be able to do without the newborn clothes.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My son was almost 9lbs and it was a good 2 weeks before 0-3 months fit him. Gymboree tends to run bigger and so does Gap. Depends on how long your baby is. My son was long and skinny, so even though it said "up to 7lbs" it fit him until he was like 10lbs because he was and still is very slender...just long.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

It really can depend on the brand, and where the clothes were made, and material. Once washed, some of my daughter's 6-9m clothes are the same size as her 0-3m clothes...

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I work at Carters, ALL baby clothing runs differently for different store. I'm not super sure about other brands but when in doubt, check the weight on the tag or ask an associate. As for Carters, their sizing runs like this. Preemie- up to 5 pounds, Newborn-up to 8 pounds, 3 months is more like 0-3 (8-12.5 pounds), 6 months is more like 3-6 (12.5-16.5 pounds), 9 months is 6-9 (16.5-20.5 pounds) 12, 18, and 24 months are generally the same as other stores?

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

my recommendation is don't take the tags off anything you buy. I didn't buy much, but I didn't want to get home and have to do laundry right way because I didn't have enough. My mom convienced me only to wash a few outfits that I bought and only right before he was due, good thing, before I came home from the hospital I had more clothes than I could ever use and within a few weeks I had mom take clothes back and exchange them for the next size up or store credit because I had so much. It was much easier to return my stuff, since I still had the receipt and I could get my cash back. I didn't really have to buy clothes until a year, I just saved store credit and people kept sending stuff. Also, don't take tags off anything anyone buys your for more than a few months off. A bunch of friends with kids bought me 12 month clothes because they knew I had too many baby clothes, unfortunately they bought them for the next summer, when he would be a year, but by May (the month of his 1st birthday) he was in 18-24months and never got to wear the summer clothes. Since they were too old and still had tags, I got more money selling them on ebay NWT (gets much more money than new w/o tags or never worn. Congrats to all

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I've been hitting a lot of sales to stock up on different sizes. There was actually a rummage sale at a local high school here, where you could fill up a brown paper sack for $7, so I got a lot of gently used clothing there. At least if it doesn't fit long or is too big at first I didn't spend that much to get started.

lilbabyvenus |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I am the same as lilbabyvenus. I have been going to a lot of yard sales and buying gently used clothes. I have washed 2 laundry baskets of 0-6 month clothing and have probably only spent maybe $25 or $30 for all of it. So I am not really out much if she can't wear it. I do have a few newborn clothes, but not to many.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

As of right now I am at 41 weeks and we are still waiting on Baby. My older sister has some hand-me-downs that she is willing to give us if our baby is a girl... but that is the problem. It has been hard to know what kinds of clothing to buy because our child has not cooperated at any of the ultrasounds that we have had and we don't know if Baby is a boy or girl. So what I did was register mainly for onesies. We got some in newborn and 0-3 months. We also got a couple of "gender neutral" (hard to find now!!!) outfits in newborn and 0-3 on clearance. Soon after our child is born we'll be able to know what to buy and will get it then.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My 7lb son was in premie for about the 1st month. My best advise is DO NOT DRY CLOTHES IN THE DRYER! I hang dry all of his clothes and he is 15 months now and can still were a few 9 month things. The difference is HUGE on something/someone that small.

angmatt |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Skip the preemie clothes. It's a waste in 90% of newborns and it they DO fit, they will only fit for two weeks, then you're on to newborn clothing. Newborn clothing is perfect for newborns. My daughter wore them home from the hospital and was in 0-3 month clothing within six weeks.

forensicmama |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Honestly, I'm sorry to say there is no real answer for this. All babies are born different sizes and grow at different rates. I would just recommend having an array of sizes from newborn to 0-3 months. Leave the tags on and take back what you don't need. Some babies end up between sizes. My son was 9lbs even and 21.5 inches long when he was born. He wore size newborn. He is now 4 weeks old and about 10.5lbs. Most newborn tops and sleepers are too small, yet newborn bottoms still fit and some are a little loose. Some 0-3 tops fit and some are too small. It all depends on the brand and the size of your baby.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My daughter was 8lbs 8oz and 19" when she was born and fit into a premie outfit from Carters at target. It was an accidental purchase by a friend, but after putting on a newborn size it was too big, so luckily I had that. she was born in december so I was so paranoid she was going to get cold! She only wore that outfit home from the hospital and I believe one other time about 3 days later before it was too small. I kept it, all in perfect condition hiding in my room! I can't wait to see what this baby is going to be in when it's born!

pinksewingmommy |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Most babies usually wear 0-3 at birth and 3-6 months at 3 months. All my neices and nephews wore 6 months at 3 months old and 9 months at 6 months old.

gerimoran |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My son was 9 1/2 lbs and 23 inches long and he wore newborn, albeit for a week. There's a lot to consider when buying baby clothes and if both parents are tall (as in our case) the safe bet is Carter's, which is best for long, skinny babies like mine. In Carter's my son wore the size of age he was (newborn, 0/3, etc) but I had to double his age to get the size (so he wore 3-6 mo at 2 wks old) if he wore any other brand. The dr. should give you a good indication of how big the baby is and you can judge how many newborn clothes to have with that.

MayBird |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Though my son was 7lbs 11ozs. He still fit into premie clothes for a few weeks when he was first born. Which we had to go out and buy because we never expected to have to do that. I would start out with a few newborn clothes, but wait until after the baby is born to really do all the clothes shopping.

So everyone told me, DONT GET NEWBORN CLOTHES. Of course I listened and just got a few NB sizes. Bad move on my part. My daughter was born on time about 1 week early and she was 6lbs 15 ounces so average size and she is 2 months old and still fits in newborn onesies. I had to go out and buy a bunch of newborn clothes so she had some since most i bought were 0-3 months she only fits in 0-3 month feetie stuff because shes 23 inches long so she itty bitty except for her long legs.

My DD was 7 lbs 12oz and 19 inches, she wore newborn for 10 days. She was a summer baby, so dresses she got more use out of than one pieces. This time I am preparing for a boy, so I am skipping newborn, and going 0-3, for I am expecting he will be in the 8 lb range.

When I was preparing for my DD I bought Gerber Newborn and 0-3months. Luckily I did b/c she was only 6lbs 3oz so the Newborn size fit her much better than 0-3 months.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

All depends on how big you're baby is.. i would buy a few things in a range from newborn to 6 months. My little girl was 10lbs 3.5oz and wore newborn clothes for about 3 days lol. Then it was all 3 months. I did buy alot of 3 months in preperation and now that I'm pregnant again I'll be getting alot of 3 months to start off with. If you have a baby shower you likely won't need to buy alot because other people will give you lots of clothes.

When DS was born he weighed 6 lbs 6 oz. The 0-3 month stuff was huge on him, so DH went and bought some newborn stuff after we got home from the hospital and it was still big on him. I suggest buying maybe one or two premie outfits and one or two newborn outfits and just see what fits best at the hospital.

It also depends on what brand the clothes are because every company has different sizing. I work at Osh Kosh and the newborn clothes there are 5-8 lbs and the 3 mo clothes are for 8-12 lbs. So make sure that you are checking the weight for each brand and don't assume they are all the same. Remember just like adult clothes, some brands of baby clothes run bigger than others and just because newborn was too big on one persons 8 lb baby doesn't mean the same will hold true for you. It's all about the brand you buy.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My baby girl's stats: 0-1 month - NB sized clothes. She was born 7 lbs, and newborns are so skinny that anything bigger, and their shoulders will come through the neck! At this stage, I ONLY used cute footie PJ's. I wasn't going to subject a newborn to a waistband! 2-3 months - 0-3 month size. I actually kept her in them too long! Still, I used mostly footie pj's. I put her in 3 or 6mo dresses for church. 4-5 months - 3-6 month size, and some 6-9 month size. Still lots of footie pj's, but finally started using casual clothes too. Her Christmas dress was 9 mo size. 6 months - 6-9 month size pj's, 9 mo+ size everything else! 7 months-8 months - 12 month size and up! Now that her shoulders have a nice strong shape to them, it's easy to put her in even bigger clothes (18mo+) and they fit her frame just fine!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My LO was born 7 lb 5 oz 21 inches. GAP up to 7 lbs fits her perfectly. 0-3 months also fit with a little room which I love because its easier to get her in and out. Carters she can wear 3 mo but a little bit loose. It all depends on the brand too. I got some newborn clothes that she still can't wear because they're too big for her. I recommend getting pretty much mostly one-piece that button from top to bottom for easy change and warmth. I regret buying anything that does goes over the head to put on. I also did not like those sleeper dress.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

I bought all kinds of newborn outfits for my daughter and brought the cutest one the hospital with me. When she was born she was 6 lbs 4 oz and SWIMMING in the footed pajamas I had to take her home in! We had to go to buy a few preemie outfits on the way home from the hospital bc everything was so big, her head even came through the neck hole, so it was a necessity. I would say bring one newborn outfit to the hospital with you, but I would buy a preemie outfit too and leave the tags on just in case. That's what I am doing this time around!!!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

If you are planning on having a baby shower wait to buy clothes until after. People tend to gift the things and sizes you will need right when baby is born, so you may not need to buy any newborn clothes. My son could wear newborn until he was almost a month old then it got too snug. My son is on the tall side so he has always grown out of his clothes a month before what is listed on the tag. For example 0-3 months he outgrew at 2 months instead of 3. All babies will be different. The best thing to do is to plan for what is on the tag until baby comes. I know baby clothes are cute, but dont over buy that was a mistake I made and still do LOL. Also to help cut the cost I buy used clothes at baby consignments, yard sales, and also shop at the end of the season clearance sales for next year. It has saved us a lot of money.

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

If you plan on using pocket style cloth diapers for your newborn you should always get their clothes a size larger or get some extensions for the crotch for onesies. If your baby grows as fast as my daughter did, they'll outgrow most of their clothes within a month and a half, and you'll want to buy the same brand clothes because they vary in size from brand to brand. Also, don't worry too much about having a bunch of cute outfits for your newborn. They'll most likely be swaddled or in a baby carrier most of the time. You'll be fine with a few onesies or gowns, and they're cheap.

My son weighed 8 1/2 lbs when he came home, and barely fit into newborn clothes. 0-3 month clothes fit him pretty well with room to grow for the first few months. I wouldn't buy too many "nice" outfits for the first few months, my son wore mostly one-piece outfits and pajamas until he was at least 3 months- much easier for diaper changes.

AndreaS1206 |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

At birth a ftypical full term can vary from 5-9lbs so I'd all together reccomed skipping nb size clothes sinch they are only tailored for babies up to 8-10lbs. Also consider purchasing larger sizes like 3-6 and 6-9; although the clothes may seem too big for your baby, babies grow fast and by the time they are 4 months old they will be able to fit a 6-9 month sleeper or onesie. So with that being said if you choose to buy nb clothes it's best if you only bought maybe a couple items eg: 1-5pack of nb onesies, 2 sleeper and 1 or 2 size nb outfits.

My daughter was over 8 pounds and wore newborn untill 3 months. She wore 6 month clothes at 6 months and so on. Once she hit 12 months, she stayed in that size untill just recently. She is 21 months and wears 18 month clothes. I learned that when a size says 0-3 months or 3-6, the size truley is the largest. When my daughter was 3 months, the 3-6 month clothes were too big.

mlemonroe2 |

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

If you had a baby shower, chances are you got a wide range of clothing sizes, between newborn and 24 months, because nobody knows exactly what to buy you and they're all going to buy what they think is most useful/adorable. Keep at least four infant-sized pieces (this is assuming that you have a working washer and dryer). So long as you keep up on diaper changes and your baby doesn't have explodapoo, you should be okay until you can determine how many changes of clothes you need and how long you'll need them. Honestly, the growth rate of your baby is entirely different than everybody else's. You just need to be ready to be flexible.

I would agree to keep tags on most of your seasonal outfits until your baby arrives. Big babies run in my family, so I bought mostly 0-3 month clothing. Since she was due in January I bought a lot of nice warm stuff. Well she ended up being 1 month early and needing preemie cloths for the first month. At 3 months she is just now fitting into her 0-3 month clothes, and it is spring and much too warm for a lot of the clothes I washed up and put away for her. I wish I had kept the tags on the warm stuff so I could exchange it for smaller sizes!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My daughter was 8 pounds when born and the only newborn she wore was her coming home outfit and the second day outfit. She pretty much went straight into 3 mo. They were a tad long but fit perfect everywhere else. I go with the go a bit bigger idea. Babies grow so fast :)

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

It's hard to predict which size clothing your baby will need at first. Many babies outgrow newborn or 0- to 3-month clothes quickly, and some larger babies skip the newborn sizes completely and start with 3-month or 3- to 6-month sizes. Others will start out in preemie sizes and wear newborn clothes for months. The best tip is to buy clothing from tutus for babies

Try to get as many clothes as you can from a mom-to-mom sale. You can score mad deals. My wife and I do this and we can raise 3 kids on a pharmacy technician salary and are hoping to have one more.

My wife and I live off a starting radiologist salary but still look for deals on baby clothes all the time. Your best bet is to just have a big baby shower and have all the guests organize with each other on whos getting what.

Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this. Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

My first was 7 lbs 15 oz and my second was 7 lbs 2 oz when they were born. I'm 40 weeks today with my third and I've bought 0-3 months and up. Considering the sizes of my other two at birth, I felt that newborn clothing would be a waste of money and that our money was better spent on the larger sizes.

telefonkatalogenbiz I would get one or two 0000 items just in case, I know one woman who was 6lb born and she was the biggest of her siblings- she prepared for a very small baby because that's what her family history indicated she'd have. Her child was born weighing in at over 4kg!

Q&A: What clothes sizes will I need for a newborn?

Buy and wash 2 premie sized outfits and 2-3 NB sized outfits if the baby looks to be average size on sonograms. Buy and wash 2-3 NB and 2 0-3 M outfits for baby if he or she looks normal to larger than average birth size. I was 7.5 lbs, my first sister was 9.3 lbs and my youngest sister was 10.8 lbs. i wore NB and my sisters both wore 0-3 month clothes. Take into account the time of year you are giving birth and how long baby appears on sonograms too. If your baby is like me, I was 7.8 lbs and 23" long. I was a kinda skinny baby born in December. I wore onesies without legs even in December because my legs were just too long. My sisters were both about my length; however, the 0-3 month outfits seemed to fit them pretty well. So go by your sonograms. If baby looks long and seems to be under 9 lbs before birth, NB and premie outfits are best. If baby looks average length and at or over 8 lbs, look into NB and 0-3 months. But you really should wash about 4-5 outfits and no more before baby is born. Keep the tags on other clothing until after baby is born. One more thing, make sure there are no loose strings on sleeves or in socks to prevent baby's fingers and toes from being wrapped in strings and injuring baby.
