The Bump Expert

Use this guide to stock your medicine chest, and you'll be prepared for all of baby's minor aches and illnesses. Always discuss medications and treatments with your pediatrician before giving to baby. (Items with a * are must-haves.)

[  ] Baby nail clippers or blunt scissors*

[  ] Cotton balls (don’t use swabs to clean baby’s nose or ears)
[  ] Baby thermometer*
[  ] Bulb syringe/nasal aspirator
[  ] Medicine dropper or spoon with measurements
[  ] Petroleum jelly and sterile gauze (for circumcision care)*
[  ] Infant acetaminophen (Tylenol)
[  ] Antibiotic cream
[  ] Saline nasal drops
[  ] Baby gas drops
[  ] Disinfecting hand soap (for you)

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

I would recommend you just get this kit. It's so small, you can take it anywhere and it has absolutely EVERYTHING: http://www.mamaista.com/2009/05/07/swine-flu-and-hurricanes-and-killer-beesoh-my/

you should also print out directions on baby/child CPR and heimlich and keep on an index card along with the number to poison control and the pediatrician.

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

You can probably put together a fine first aid kit for your baby on your own for a lot less than $79 plus shipping & handling . . . just 2¢ from an economically challenged father to be. ;D

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

As far as Baby CPR/choking procedures, I would take a course at your local hospital (or wherever offerend). Even with a Baby Dummy, it's nerve-wracking to handle, with all the flipping. You'll also be surprised about the amount of pressure you should use, whether you're doing infant chest thrusts (one peson using your thumbs vs. two people with index and middle fingers) or 'back slaps' with the heel of your hand. Practice, practice, practice, because, god forbid, you should ever find yourself in that situation, your training will kick in and you'll be less likely to freeze.

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

It all depends on your needs and your lifestyle. You may want a large kit for home base; a small kit for your purse, backpack, or diaper bag; and a kit for the car that goes with you whenever you travel. (Keep in mind that extreme heat or cold can render some medications ineffective, so if you have a kit in your car you'll need to swap out some of its contents regularly. Although you've got a lot of packing to do for yourself, don't forget to take along the essentials for your little one as well.-Guy Riordan

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

Thank you for the advice. My husband and are taking a month off from work to take our kids on a road trip.Since we don't own a car, our option was Fox Car Rental. My youngest is almost 2 years old and i must admit I'm a little worried for him on the trip.I packed everything you said for the first aid kit so let's just hope everything will go well and we'll have some time to unwind.Thank you again!

Q&A: Making a first-aid kit for baby?

Yes, all the items mentioned above should be enough. I'm good at these things. It's for sure that the emergency management masters are useful. I just realized that I never had a first-aid kit for my baby. I never really even thought about getting one. I guess I was just refusing to believe that something bad might happen to him.
