Pregnancy Week by Week

Get a window on what’s happening in your pregnancy, week by week. From week four to week 42, your baby is experiencing a miraculous transformation from a clump of cells to a fully formed (and totally cute) newborn. Just imagine, as early as five weeks, your baby is already starting to form major organs (heart, stomach, liver, and kidneys) and systems (digestive, circulatory, nervous). By eight weeks, your raspberry-sized womb-mate is moving her arms and legs. At the beginning of your second trimester (week 14), your wee one is sucking his thumb. By week 28, the first week of the third trimester, baby (now as big as an eggplant) is prepping for breathing, developing his eyesight and packing on pounds in anticipation of life outside the womb. Each week is a new miracle. Less miraculous is how a mom-to-be may feel. Pregnancy Week-by-Week charts your baby’s development but also lets mom know what she might be feeling during each week of her pregnancy. Pregnancy week by Week includes everything mom needs to know to feel a sense of control over her pregnancy. Each week offers a complete guide to what you might feel, your must-do’s, your nice-to do’s, and answers and advice on everything pregnancy-related. Plus each week’s guide offers tips on maintaining a healthy and comfortable pregnancy from strategies on coping with pregnancy symptoms (morning sickness anyone?) to ideas for healthy eating, and pointers on talking to your OB. Let us guide you along your pregnancy, week by week.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

Implantation bleeding -- how many women actually experience this, and does it last a day, or two?

Re: Implantation bleeding -- how many women actually experience this, and does it last a day, or two?

The Bump Expert

Have a bit of spotting? Light, brief (lasting just a day or two) spotting can actually be a sign of early pregnancy. It’s known as “implantation bleeding,” and here’s what it means: A few days after conception, that little fertilized (yay!) egg starts digging into the wall of your uterus and getting ready to grow. Since the uterine lining is nice and rich with blood, some women spot a little at this point. This is totally normal and no cause for concern but a pregnancy test and doctor's visit is in order to make sure implantation bleeding is truly the culprit.

There aren't reliable stats on how many women actually experience implantation bleeding. Some do, some don't. And some claim it lasts for one day; others say three or four. All in all, there's no real way to know whether spotting (or lack thereof) indicates pregnancy. Only a test can tell.

If you find yourself bleeding heavily or for more than a couple of days, or if you bleed during a later stage of your pregnancy, call your doctor right away. This could be a sign of miscarriage or an ectopic (often called “tubal”) pregnancy.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I have been spotting for 4 days now. Could this still be considered implantation?

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I started spotting exactly one week after ovulation. I spotted for almost 3 days. I thought that I was just starting my period a week early because I did the month before and it always starts out real light, but then it disappeared and I took a pregnancy test the next week and it was positive.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I just got my BFP today after the TWW of my first IUI. This morning I noticed a brownish/gray discharge mixed with my progestrone suppositories. I've read that it's normal. I won't be seeing my dr until tomorrow, so I'm going to ask if this is normal.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I actually had bleeding like a mild cycle. It started about 6 days dpo and has slowed down but is still going slightly. I was 5 days early. I am 10 days dpo. My blood hcg was 9 yesterday at 9 days dpo and I had a faint line on my pregnancy test. Todays is much darker. I have read many stories about people who actually have heavy bleeding going on to have normal pregnancy so fingers crossed. I hope this peanut sticks.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

the spotting was what tipped me off. my husband and I have been trying for 8 months, but with regular periods every month we had started to lose hope. right on schedule I had one day of the lightest spotting then it was over. it confused me because I thought I was just starting another regular period. after 4 days of nothing else, I decided to take a random test, and it was positive!

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I was supposed to start my period 4 days ago. I took a pregnancy test 2 days ago and it was negative. I started spotting pink yesterday and today it was red pink. Should I take another test? I've never had a late period. My periods are always early.

Q&A: What is implantation bleeding?

I'm also not sure if I had mid cycle or implantation bleeding. I was supposed to ovulate from the 6th and started with cramps, sore breasts, abdominal pain, pain on both sides and started bleeding late afternoon pinkish/red and it got worse like a heavy period. It went on till 9th (3days), it stoped but I'm spotting pinkish.. what can it be?
