How Bad Will My First Poop Really Be?

Will I ever poop again? Will it hurt like hell when I do?

Will I ever poop again? Will it hurt like hell when I do?

The Bump Expert

Yes, you’ll poop. If you just delivered, it’s normal to take a day or two (or three) to have a bowel movement, usually due to a combo of weak tummy muscles, soreness, and plain old fear. To be honest, it might hurt. But probably not as much as you fear. And you won’t burst your stitches either. Doing your business just might be a little uncomfortable the first time or two, especially if you have hemorrhoids. What can help:

Stool softeners
The nurse at the hospital may offer these to you. An OTC one, such as Colace, works just fine too.

Lots of fluids and fiber
Drink water and load up on fiber-rich foods, such as green leafy veggies and apples with the skin-on.

Don’t overdo it -- a leisurely walk or some gentle Yoga stretches are all you need. A couple of sets of Kegels may stimulate your system as well.

Seriously, try your darndest to relax. Tension (in your head and in your butt) definitely won’t help matters.

If all of that doesn’t produce a poop, ask your practitioner about using a mild laxative. Remember, it’ll get easier with each successive BM. Now go ahead, mom. We know you can do it.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I had a TON of trouble going. I had a 3rd degree tear and stool softeners were not doing anything for me. I contacted my doctor and he recommended Magnesium Citrate. That stuff is the best! My son is 3 1/2 months now and I am still not "regular." So, I drink Benefiber everyday and I am a happy woman! There is nothing like giving birth and being sore afterwards. BUT, adding constipation on top of that = TONS of tears! Happy thats over!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

The first poop DID hurt--I was taking stool softeners regularly and I was sooo constipated. After I got it out though I felt so much better, and every time after that was cake-walk.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

Take a stool softener - and keep taking it! I made the mistake of getting through the first poop just fine and then deciding that I no longer needed a stool softener. I was very wrong. The next several times I went to the bathroom, it felt like I was pooping glass - no exageration. It's especially important to take a stool softener like Colace (not peri-colace which is a laxative) if you're breastfeeding. You're using up a lot of your body's fluids in your milk. My daughter is 7 months old and I still take Colace everyday. Unlike a laxative, stool softeners are safe to take for an extended period of time.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I had heard about the oh so dreaded post partum poop and I was a little nervous. I drank a TON of water & ate a bunch of veggies as soon as I could to stay hydtrated & keep things flowing & I was just fine. So I would so dont worry just take action. :)

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I only had a 2nd degree tear when I had my son, but I was terrified to go the first time... just make sure you're taking plenty of stool softeners and drinking lots of water...
