Q&A: Postpartum depression?

What does postpartum depression feel like and how can I spot the warning signs?

Re: What does postpartum depression feel like and how can I spot the warning signs?

The Bump Expert Good question, and you're smart to think about the warning signs. Ten to twenty percent of new moms experience symptoms of PPD including persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, crying, irritability, insomnia, extreme fatigue, eating problems, memory loss, and an inability or lack of desire to take care of yourself and/or baby. Some women feel better in a few weeks; others may suffer for months. The good news is the PPD is one of the most treatable forms of depression. Talk to your doctor (today!) about treatment options, which might include antidepressant medication (some are safe for nursing moms) or therapy. And take care of yourself: Eat right, nap when baby naps, exercise, and hire a sitter or enlist a friend to give yourself time to do things that make you feel good.
