Getting back in shape after baby doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, exercising will make you feel good too—it’s been proven to help with post natal depression. Here are my top six smooth ways to bounce back.

1. Start walking as soon as you can after giving birth (as long as your doctor gives you clearance). This will get your body moving and burning calories. Buy a pedometer and measure your daily activity then gradually start to increase your steps every week by 10 percent as you get stronger.

2. Perform kegals and pelvic tilts as soon as 1-2 days after delivery, depending on what kind of delivery you have and as long as your doctor approves. This will increase the blood supply to the perineum and help speed up the recovery process. By exhaling and drawing in your belly (which activates the corset like muscle called the transverse abdominals), you’ll get a strong foundation to get your abs back as your hips and abdominals start moving back together.

3. Do basic crunches. Watch for a separation in your abdominals by placing your finger just above the belly button as you crunch. If you can get three or more fingers in between your abs you have diastisis recti (abdominal separation). If this is the case, it’s important that you try to draw the abs back together first before you start any strenuous abdominal work especially rotation. Try placing your hands either side of the separation and manually draw them together as you perform a basic crunch. This will re-train the abs back together in their natural alignment.” If the separation gets worse or does not get better consult with your doctor or a women’s health physical therapist.

4. Breastfeed—as though you needed another reason, it’s a fast way to shrink the uterus back down to pre-pregnancy size. And, it burns up to 600 calories a day! The catch: you still need to watch your food portions, eat a well balanced diet and exercise or else you migh fall in to the breast feeding diet trap and wonder why you're not getting back to your pre-pregnancy weight!

5. Get into strength training and small bursts of cardio. Not only is it time efficient for the busy mom, but it also increases your metabolism and burns the baby fat. Try doing some squats with shoulder raises and lunges with triceps extensions then shuffle from side to side for a minute to get the heart rate up. Directions: Lift your arms to shoulder height leading with your elbows with your palms facing downwards. Then gently lower the rams back to the side of the body. Bending your elbows close to the torso with your palms facing towards the body. Extend the elbows behind the body squeezing the top of the arms for that extra burn. Then bend the elbows back to start position. Doing this will challenge your body’s musculature and will help you lose the weight and tone the body back to its pre-pregnancy state.

6. Spice up your cardio by adding some hill intervals (short bursts of higher intensity drills) to work the glutes, hamstrings and quads. Try to finish your cardio (walking, hiking or gently jogging) with walking lunges and modified push-ups with the knees on the floor.

Try a pilates -styled dvd or class....this is what will restore your core. Core exercises will be what will return your body to the pre-baby shape. Find friends too through mom's groups....power in numbers (and accountability).

I didn't do to much at the beginning of my pregnancy. I was really sick and always tired of course!! so with my weight I have gained hideous cellulite! Anyone had this and gotten rid of it? I'm so worried that I will live with this the rest of my life. Hopeing tons of excersize will smooth it back out.

I gained 85lbs during my pregnancy and 6 weeks after i had my baby i starte running 5 miles a day for just one week then my knees went out and my stomach would get a lot of cramps so I had to stop that. Instead I just started eating healthier and just carrying my baby around was I guess enough because its 5 months later and Im back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Also I bought one of those Dr. Rey shapewear things and that helps the loose skin go back to being firm again!

I'd love to start jogging. I had my little one 5 weeks ago today and it is painful in the belly to have any bouncing movement whatsoever. I can walk just fine without it hurting, but I'd REALLY like to do more. Suggestions?

I have delt with cellulite on my upper thighs and (from personal experience) you can make it go away or atleast be less noticeable.. just keep exercising and do lots of lunges which help your butt && thighs get toned. ((and ive read if you like rub the cellulite area with a plastic brush in a circle with light pressure daily its supposed to reduce the sight of it)) Also if jogging is too much you can actually loose just as much weight walking, just get in a daily routine.. also try swimming its really great exercise and you wont feel the extra weight as much due to buoyancy. but lungesss are great! you can do them while you vacuum or while your cooking && feel amazing! hope i helped, keep your head up ladies :o)

I am doing a 90-day health and fitness challenge. I started the middle of last week and have lost 4 lbs without exercising. My friend who told me about it lost 6 lbs her first week. I am definitely going to start exercising, but it is sooooo hard to find the time. I want to do mornings, but I also want to sleep. :o) Anyway, this challenge is easy and I'm so excited about it. I was very in shape before my pregnancy - I ran and lifted weights very routinely. But I felt like garbage pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy and gained way more than I wanted - including cellulite. As soon as I was cleared to workout I started jogging again(not anything like I had precluding, but slowly built back up to avoid injury - not to mention I had to wear a pad when running at any pace but that's a DVD story) anyway I started a lil lifting again too AND I downloaded an app that helped me keep track of what I ate and how much I exercised. (myfitnesspal). 3 months after giving birth I lost about 85% of my weight gain and now five months later Im less than I was (prob cos I don't have the muscle I had before) and I'm going to run a half marathon in a week! Setting the goal was really helpful for me. Oh and with the weight lose the cellulite went away too, thank God lol. Good luck, it's hard but you can do it! Hope this helps!
