I'm having a really hard time breastfeeding both my newborns. Is it okay to supplement? Should I use any specific type of formula (like one meant just for preemies)?
Before you start to supplement, see a lactation consultant to confirm you have the positioning right and your newborns are, in fact, sucking correctly. If your babies were born early, they may have difficulty latching on altogether because they may have a less developed suck reflex. The consultant will also weigh your babies before and after you feed them to determine the actual ounces they are taking in. Chances are you’re doing just fine and you and your baby just need a few more days to hit your groove. Do make sure you are drinking enough water because dehydration is one thing that can drastically reduce milk supply.
