Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I’m afraid to poop. I’m scared it’ll hurt and I’ll tear my stitches. Is this normal?

Re: I’m afraid to poop. I’m scared it’ll hurt and I’ll tear my stitches. Is this normal?

The Bump Expert

That first post-birth poop is a big source of stress for every new mom. Yes, the tummy muscles that help you go are weakened and the whole area is pretty sore, but the biggest problem is undoubtedly the fear factor. Take a breath -- you won’t split your stitches , and the whole event will probably hurt less than you think. (And definitely less than birthing baby!) Try not to make this into a monumental moment of truth. Tension (in your head and in your butt) definitely won’t help matters. What can help: Stool softeners like Colace, lots of fluids, plenty of fiber and moving around. Don’t overdo it -- a leisurely walk or some gentle Yoga stretches are all you need. A couple of sets of Kegels may stimulate your system as well. If all of that doesn’t produce a poop, ask your practitioner about using a mild laxative. Remember, it’ll get easier with each successive BM. Now go ahead, mom. We know you can do it.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I just went through this fear, and I can tell you, it's not as bad as you think it will be. My doctor was giving me a twice daily stool softener for a few days before I was discharged from the hospital, and gave me a laxative suppository at the time of discharge. It was a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable. The consequences for not pooping -- constipation, hemorrhoids -- are far less appealing. Overcome the fear and go!

When I gave birth to my first child I had to get stitches and I felt the same way but it wasn't a problem for me

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

i had a problem with this - i had to take extra iron supplements after birth and they gave me oxycodone for pain - both of which contribute to constipation and totally negated the colace, fluids and fiber... ends up i'm 5 weeks since giving birth, took myself off iron and pain meds except ibuprophen, and it still hurts to go and just noticed blood after the other bleeding has stopped (i think something tore). i had mentioned the pain to my ob at my 2 week checkup and she said it was normal but never looked to see if there was a problem. if you think something might be wrong - get checked out!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I just had a baby a week ago and I was terrified to do this! I had pushed for an hour to get a baby out and the last thing I wanted to do is push to go to the bathroom. Stool softener was very helpful. It made things a lot easier...physically and mentally.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I just went for the first time 6 days after giving birth.... I was terrified to go due to the stitches and pain level from even peeing.. In the hospital I was very anemic so they were more concern about giving me iron pills and pain medication than a laxative . This is also did not help my ability to go. After being in pain for the last two days I took some laxatives and It wasn't that painful. I feel relived. I wish I did wait that long to go.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

It was pretty scary for me too. I found the stool softeners to be quite helpful in taking the edge off. Also, I found that running warm water over the perinium helped while having a bowel movement. I think it helped to relax my muscles and let things flow naturally. Thankfully, everything has gone smoothly ever since.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

It took me 5 days after my son was born. I had been guzzling water, eating ruffage, taking colace, and fiber supplements! It wasn't working. Prune juice did the trick. You don't need much. I drank about 4 oz. in the evening and had results by morning!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I was PETRIFIED of pooping after having my c-section. Using those muscles felt like a highly unpleasant task. Just take something safe like Colace to ensure that everything is soft, eat healthy and drink lots of fluids and you'll be just fine ;-)

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I just had a baby 1 week ago and I was initially nervous about pooping. I actually pooped the day after delivery and it wasn't bad at all! I have been taking Colace, a stool softner 2 times per day and have had no problems.

jrlandrigan |

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I totally know how you feel! Thankfully, I had pooped a few hours before my son was born.. and then after he was born, I was terrified to poop because I didn't want to rip my stitches (my husband made it sound like I had stitches all the way to my butt - and I was too scared to look at it myself!!!) Luckily, I did poop again while in the hospital... but now, 3 weeks later, I'm still scared when I have to poop and it still hurts for me... even with taking the stool softener... I guess everyone is different but I know your pain!!

Schoeneck28 |

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I was taking the stool softener twice a day and it still took 4 days before I had a BM--AND it hurt worse than labor itself (yes I did have an epi but up to the point of the epi I was in a LOT of pain.) It also clogged the toilet so bad that I almost had to call apartment maintenance to come fix it :(

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

the pain i now have is worse then childbirth! i labored on the toilet quite a bit and was told at my follow-up visit that i had a tear near my anus (anal fissure) and the pain continues to stay with me. prunes do help but i may have to look into surgery. i had natural childbirth but the pain i feel when having a BM is so much more. i do hope it will eventually go away.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

with my first child I didn't have a BM until almost a week, I had stitches plus hemmorides from pushing with my epidural which hurt a ton so being constipated didn't help. My doctor recommended Miralax which did help cause I tried everything, With my second child who is 3 weeks old I was kinda scared to not suffer through it again and I had a BM the next day and less pain with it.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I haven't went in for my 6 week checkup yet, but i have been having major pain while going. I delivered naturally with no tears so i thought i would be ok. at the hospital they were giving me stool softeners and it worked but now at home its a lot of pain and ive been bleeding also. Does anybody know what can help this? or even what the cause could be?

Me too! I was terrified! I finally went and bled (not from my stitches) My bum still hurts and my baby is five weeks.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

That was the one of the hardest things I had to do. I had some stool softners but it didn't help. I was in the bathroom for an hour if not more. I thought I was pushing out another baby!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

In australia they wont discharge you from hospital until you have had a bowel movement it's sounds gross but wad up some toilet paper and use it to support your stitched area as you have the bowel movement it helped me it ended up not being bad at all

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I had my baby 3 weeks ago and pushing to go to the bathroom was not on my mind. If I felt like going i went. Just relax think of something else other than the pain!! The worst part was peeing. I was told by the nurses I had to pee within the hour after pushing if not i would get a catherter done and THAT my friend hurt!! So relax and let tthe poop flow!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

My daughter is four weeks old now and the whole bm process still isn't a very pleasant one! I think most of us moms fear the bm! When my son was born my mom totally freaked me out when she told me I should have had one before I was discharged. I ended up having my husband give me an enema just to ease my anxiety that something was wrong! Lesson learned and it made going after my daughter a little less traumatic.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I was terrified to poop after getting stitched up. I mean make-a-deal-with-God kind of scared. I had labored for quite a while on the toilet, so I was pretty cleaned out and didn't feel the need to go for about 3 days. My midwife had me on a regimen of prune juice and a natural iron supplement that didn't contribute to constipation (Floradix - for those who are interested). It didn't hurt at all, but man, the freak-out and it-feels-weird factors were in full force. For those of you who had your babies naturally and know what I'm talking about, it was having that "I can't believe what I was just able to do! I can frickin' do ANYTHING!" moments all over again.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

try flax seed!!! It's got so many health benefits, and it is great for fiber and stool softening. My husband grinds it in a coffee grinder for us and we drink a few teaspoons with juice every day. It's been great for me, and he is seeing health benefits too!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I had the same fear and unfortunately I didn't go for several days. It was a combination of the IV drugs they gave me during labor and the fear of causing more damage down south. Unfortunately, because I didn't go for so long, I was extrenely constripated and experienced cramps and excessive discomfort. I say, if your body will let you go number two...do it!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I didn't go until 5 days after baby was born. I had been taking Colace the whole time, even the week before delivery (taking a couple a day in late pregnancy). The Dr also told me I could take Myralax, so I was mixing that with a drink every day once I got home from the hospital. When I finally went, it was awful. Lots of pain and bleeding (not from my stitches, but from my rectum). Every day after that was hard for a while even with the supplements, and I eventually got hemorrhoids which was a whole nother deal! I'd say I wasn't "normal" for about 6-8 weeks, meaning I still felt somewhat constipated and needed stool softeners.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I think we all have this fear, I was petrified because I have issues with constipation even before I got pregnant! I actually went about day after delivery because did not go before for day or two. It was painful, but the stool softners helped. I had a 3d degree midline episiotomy so even though got through first one, even at home each one was a scary uncomfortable, sometimes painful event and bled almost every time. What helped me, to make it bearable, was the colace (I took the max dose of three a day), plus lots and lots of fruit and fiber, and then while going would fold up a couple of the cottonele flushable wipes and would apply pressure to the stitches while going, helped make it a little less painful and less afraid I would split them, kinda gross I know but very effective for me. Plus the wipes are nicer to clean yourself with than dry toilet paper then of course followed with the warm water from the peri bottle and the tucks pads. So far, three weeks in, haven't split stitches and I try to get enough stuff in my system to go every other day at least and though every time I get a bit nervous, those things have helped me.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I did not poop for 5 days following my C section. I tried EVERYTHING: stool softeners (I started taking these in the hospital before we left and I continued at home), laxatives, walking, fiber....NOTHING worked. I was about to give up and a nurse gave me an odd recommendation: half room-temp apple juice, half room-temp ginger ale. I drank two glasses with fiber powder mixed in. It took a couple of hours but it finally worked. Even then, it was awful. Sorry- good luck!

Besides stool softeners and fiber, you should take some toilet paper and press it against your stitches while you are going. It really helps!

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

Going the first time after having a baby for me was the worst experience ever. I was so constipated even though I was using stool softners and eating a whole lot of fruit. I was not scared of tearing my stitches I just couldn't get anything out no matter how hard I tried and it was very painful! It was so bad I remember just laying on the bed crying, saying to my husband, I just want to poop! finally it happened and I felt so much better of course. Anyway. It was bad.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

Don't worry - you're not alone. After giving birth and having a 4th degree tear, my worst fear was having to use those muscles again! For the first week, I took 2 Colace every morning and 2 tbsp of Milk of Mag (as directed by the doc) in the night to keep things moving. Now 3 weeks postpartum, I still take the Colace to keep things soft. I can tell you that even though it's scary, it's not that bad, and you won't tear through your stitches. After 2-3 days, your skin starts to heal and "fuse" together, so chances of tearing again are extremely rare. Keep yourself hydrated and try to relax the first time around. As for the stinging that comes with peeing, fill a peri bottle with warm water and squirt it over the area while you go. It helps to minimize the discomfort. :)

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

It's totally normal to be scared. Just be careful of the Colace if you're breastfeeding. It helped me, but ended up giving my baby explosive diarrhea. It quit as soon as I drained the milk supply containing it. Lots of fluids and fiber helped a lot for me. And be patient. It took me 5 days after my c-section to go, but after that, everything was normal. Before putting anything in your body, remember, if the medicine does something for you, it will probably do it to your baby.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

This was actually worse for me than the delivery itself. I have problems with constipation on a regular basis anyway, so I was expecting that going for the first time was going to be rough, and it was. However, you have to go at some point anyway, so I just had to push despite how painful it was. Once I got home from the hospital, my doctor recommended Miralax twice a day, and that seemed to help.

dledet1 |

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I know this fear well as I had problems with constipation prior to pregnany. After my delivery, it took nearly two hours to repair my vagina and perineum, so I had a ton of stitches. Add to this the fact that I had a hemorrhoid the size of a small grape because of all the pushing. Basically, you have to go at some point - the Colace helped a little bit, but it still hurt a lot. I'm almost five weeks postpartum, and the hemorrhoid is smaller, but it is still very unpleasant to have a bm.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

Don't wait to long cause then you will just get backed up. This happened to me and after trying stool softners and other things I was in so much pain that I couldn't even pee. My aunt ended up giving me an enama and that didn't help so after that I was taken to the emergency room.

mhbraymer |

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I wasn't so much "scared" I was shocked in the hospital actually. Before I left I had a BM that was uncomfortable sure but not painful by definition, I breathed through it and done. When I got home, that's a different story, couple days after I was holing onto the toilet roll for dear life trying not to scream bloody murder, scary but true. I was lucky though, that was the hardest part of my pregnancy, my son is 3 weeks now and it still has a twinge of pain but lessened. I find solitude and somthing to grab onto doesn't make it any better, but its a comfort/security thing I guess.Like everything in your pregnancy just breathe through it.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

With my first one, I was scared "sh..less", literally. I was super-sore down there and still in pain and was constipated from the tylenol etc and having not eaten so good on the day of delivery. So I was very very afraid to go! Even the idea of sitting on the toilet for couple of minutes, let alone sitting and pushing to get poop out (sorry to be gross but if you have given birth to a baby this is a reality almost all of us face in the first few weeks after giving birth). I was in agony for 2-3 days and contacted my Ob/Gyn who wouldn't prescribe me any medication because I was nursing! I was so mad! Finally after the 3-4th day I went and sat for a long time and finally made it! I was terrified that my stitches would come apart. None of that happened. With my second one- i think I used Colace (an over the counter stool softener) the 2nd or 3rd day once a day for a couple of days -it helped tremendously to take the edge off! Having given birth, you are so sore and scared to traumatize that area so a little medication (only until I needed it) seemed like a good option. After that it got easier. It's the first week or two that are the hardest! Recovery does speed up from there on. New moms! You will make it on the other side and you will be amazed at how much your body is capable of doing! All your fears are normal! Don't be afraid to ring up your doctor if yOu have concerns or to check in with other moms! I am always go grateful because we all need to help each other by sharing our paths! Pregnancy and childbirth and motherhood are all rough and tough and no text books prepare us well enough

stool softner every 12 hours and drink plenty of water. the muscles in your rectum and in the lower gi were put into a state of shock during birth which can make it difficult to stool.

Q&A: Scared to poop after delivery?

I totally understand! I was terrified to go after having an episiotomy and stitches. Luckily the day before I had my baby my pre-labor was being in the bathroom 5 different times so waiting a few days after having baby wasn't AS big of deal. But I definitely recommend stool softeners, especially if you wait any time at all because it's not pleasant.
