Q&A: Having sex after birth?

Do you have to wait a certain amount of time to have sex after you've given birth?

Re: Do you have to wait a certain amount of time to have sex after you've given birth?

The Bump Expert

We’d never stand in the way of love... but wait at least six weeks. It takes your uterus and cervix time to heal (this applies to both vaginal and cesarean deliveries) so getting it on any sooner puts you at risk of infection. (Not to mention pain!) Hold off on intercourse until you get the go-head from your doctor, most likely at your six-week checkup.

Even though penetration is off limits, you can certainly engage in other forms of sexual intimacy before the six week mark. Frankly, though, we doubt you’ll be up for much more than a foot rub and a cuddle. In fact, new moms have been known to tell their mate that sex is forbidden for eight, ten or even twelve weeks postpartum. (We don’t ordinarily condone dishonesty... but all’s fair when you’ve just pushed a beach ball out of your body!)

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I disagree, my doctor who has delivered many babies recommended that I wait 2 weeks, or more if I was too sore still. He said it is usually safe at 1 week but the loose muscles make it uncomfortable. I had some stiches but no episiotomy, and I tried at 2 weeks, it hurt a little later but after 3 weeks trying again it was fine. Ask your own doctor.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

After my 2nd birth I hadn't seen my husband in months since he was gone to Iraq. We did indeed have sex 2 weeks out! It was very different but nothing happened infection wise or another pregnancy

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

my baby girl is 12 weeks old and sex still hurts!! afterwards it feels like i just got kicked in the vagina really hard and have the worlds worst bruise...last time i had to sit with an ice pack for almost an hour just to help relieve some of the throbbing pain. not sure if this is normal...but it is definitely an unexpected side effect!

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

Dont feel bad if u cant go right back to having intercourse after the 6 weeks... i had to wait about 10. Even then take things very slow... especially if u tore!! But try and dont go farther than ur body can handle. I know the guys are eager to have things back to normal, but if u hurt yourself more then it just takes longer to heal. about 2 weeks after the stitches healed all the way was when i was OKAY... but it was finally enjoyable when my son was 15 weeks old. but everyone is different!!! Q&A: Having sex after birth?

We tried many times to have sex but the pain was too intense. We finally were able to have sex after 6 months since the birth of our daughter. Even then it hurt pretty bad but it just too a lot of pacience.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I had my baby 19days ago and we had a quick and gentle sex this morn (remarkably i wanted to!) It didnt last long of course (lol, im sure u know why) but it didnt hurt at all. Q&A: Having sex after birth?

Everyone is different. It took a long time for me to want and enjoy having sex again after the birth of our first daughter (I'm 34 weeks with our second). Just take it slow, foreplay and all that really does help.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

You should wait until you stop bleeding completely and you also feel good! That is usually at least 3 weeks, and often until 6-8 weeks. Many wait until 6 weeks for birth control, which is less of a concern if you are breastfeeding on demand.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I had a severe episiotomy due to a forcep delivery and I waited 2 weeks. There was a bit of discomfort at first but once that has passed, its all good. Now it does feel different from before the delivery but as long as your partner is patient you should be ok. All I can tell you is dont forget the lube.

monique |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I just delivered 1 week ago today and am in no hurry to have sex for well more than 6 weeks! When my dr told me "nothing in your vagina for 6 weeks", I told her "you mean 6 years!". I don't know when we will try but I can imagine it will be no sooner than 2 months. I had a 3rd degree tear and have a feeling it will take a long time to heal. It took 2 hours of stitching and most of it was internal so I feel like I have a jigsaw inside.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I have to agree with most of you ladies. I got the okay from my doctor at 8 weeks (it took me that long to get back in to see someone!) but tried that week and it was uncomfortable. My daughter is now 10 weeks and we still haven't done it...i know I will heal in time, but I think you just have to listen to your body and only do what feels okay.

becklaw |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I definitely waited the recommended 6 weeks, one because I was scared!!!!Scared that it would hurt and it did OMG IT DID, LOL and the two because I wanted my cervix to deflate as much as possible and three because I was also told that you can conceive much faster. Now I dont know how true this is but thats why I waited. And plus I wasnt in the mood anytime before the six weeks, I was exhausted because this is our first baby and I was still in alot of pain, and I tell ya SEX was the last thing on my mind, but the first on my husbands!!!Go figure.lmbo!!!

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I am completely opposite! I wanted it our second night home! just waiting until he stitches dissolve and the blood is completely gone to try, with condoms and lube of course

paigenicole07 |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I waited 2 months after my first baby, and 2 weeks after my second. I guess it just depends on how fast you heal. Good luck though.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

i got a 3rd degree tear as well. i just had my baby 2 weeks ago and am most likely going to wait the 6 weeks that my doctor told me to wait, despite the wanting to have done it the day i got out of the hospital... i am still a bit sore on occasion so we will just have to wait

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

my daughter is a month old and we still haven't had sex. i got the clearence from my ob but fooing around hurts, especially afterwords. just do what you feel comfortable with. If your man really loves you, he'll wait. mine was mad at himself and upset cause it hurt

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I had my first sex after C-section at 3 mos and it still really hurts. I was really sore afterward, maybe because I still had very little lubrication then. It became okay at 10 months. My husband had been very understanding of me through this time. I guess no doctor can tell you when you can or still cannot do it. Just try to check if your body is already okay for it.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

My son is 15 weeks old and i am terrified about the though of having sex again. I am still sensative. I have had a long painful recovery. The stitches didn't close and it was painful! Not sure when i'll be ready. Just have patience. I know it will be all better soon :)

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I had my first sex after 10days, DH is a doctor, He gave the go ahead, i couldn't wait at all. I had a normal natural delivery, No tears, No episiotomy,LO just popped out. I started pelvic floor exercise immediately i left the hospital, i felt really normal like nothing has changed. Today at the 6weeks checkup, eerything was fine. I think everyone is different though.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

Well I have three daughters, and I can tell you that you can become pregnant quickly if you don't wait. My two oldest are 11 months apart. I just had a baby on April 7, 2010 and I feel up to having SEX, however you should want to wait until you stop bleeding. Like everyone said it really depends on your body, but take my advice, BE CAREFUL, and make your partner wear a CONDOM if you plan on having sex before you are cleared by your dr. I don't care if your man does pull out, you can become pregnant fast.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I just had my appointment today and my doctor told me that I HAVE to had sex because I tore on the inside and the scar tissue is forming and making my opening smaller? Now I'm worried that it's gonna hurt cause the check up alone was Sooo painfull. Has anyone been told this by there Dr? Or am I the only one?

rachelfehr |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I could imagine waiting 6 weeks...my doctor told me that as soon as I stoped bleeding down there we could try, but he did tell me not to count on actually being able to finish the act because it ay be sore or painful. Still we only waited a little less than 3 weeks before we were both happy!

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

It really depends on what you think is right for you with our first child we tried at 2wks, 6wks, it hurt for almost 8 months(I had an episiotomy and it just never seemed to heal). With our second child we had sex 3 days after delivery and it was never uncomfortable and we were able to go right back to normal in that department. discuss it with your DR mine has always told me to start slowly when ever i was comfortable with the idea

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I waited 4 weeks, and I saw someone comment they felt like they had been kicked and had the biggest bruised feeling down there, that's how I felt before I had sex, I was also very swollen it sorta happened overnight. So when I woke up I figured why not give it a shot see if the pain and swelling go down, right after sex, it did. I was sort of dumbfounded but I felt better and I hopped in the shower and cleaned up and haven't had any problems with infection or anything so far yet.

sarisa82 |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

My little one is 12 weeks and I'm terrified at the thought of having sex especially after pushing out what u guys call a "football". I also had an episotomy but that healed after 2 weeks. I don't think I'm mentally prepared just yet.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I waited 7 weeks and used a condom to have sex with my husband. It was the most uncomfortable feeling. He can't use condoms bc we haven't found one big enough, but he gets irritated when I O and he doesn't. My son is 11 weeks today and we have only tried one other time and I feel like I'm losing my virginty all over again, both mentally and physically. Needless to say I'm starting the pill. I just can't get in the mood... Maybe its bc I'm afraid my son will wake up.

KailaF10 |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

After my son I was too scared to have sex until he was about 3 months. When we finally did it didn't hurt but it was definitely uncomfortable. I'm 4 weeks pregnant now and I hope we don't have to wait as long as last time!

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

you should have this conversation with your ob/gyn. SOme say as little as two weeks and some say up to 6 weeks. Remember, Kegel exercises are important for preventing incontinence, prolapse- dropping down of the uterus- and are good for maintaining your pre baby ‘lady parts.’ Here is a great, inexpensive CD that you can download and do your Kegels anywhere. There’s a 10% discount on it till January 31st. Here’s a link to a free download that gives you a taste of what’s on the CD http://vibrators-etc.centerforfemalesexuality.com/pages/free-kegel-exercise Good luck, joyce@mazelabs.com www.mazecordblood.com www.centerforfemalesexuality.com

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

It depends on how your feeling. I only waited 2 weeks- I had an uneventful delivery- make sure your partner gets you ready to go or its going to be painful. Use lots of lub.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I am waiting a very long time. After that ordeal, I am in way up for having sex, for well, right now I'm good with never having sex again. I delivered less than 48 hours ago and what do you know, he wants sex already. Mostly because its off limits lol. I am sore and am so scared to have sex and also so scared of any slight chance of getting pregnant after going through the labor I went through

AngelRaine |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I waited two weeks. DO make sure he gets you in the mood first and make sure you want to. Take things slow and if you feel uncomfortable stop. He'll have to understand. =)

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I tried at 6 weeks when I had my son and I felt like I had bruises and someone was just pushing on them continuously. I'm 11 weeks pregnant now and sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn't. I guess its all how you heal.

sway225 |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

My partner and I tried beginning at week 3...NOT a good idea. Not that you really can mess anything up, the pain is too immense to even get close. The 6-week mark seems pretty common to everyone, even without the dr OK it was a few days before 6 weeks that it really felt okay and we were able to complete the deed. I would say don't even attempt until 5 weeks, but you'll know how it feels for you

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I was cleared by my OB after 6 weeks. But between recovering from a tear, bleeding the full six weeks, being exhausted from no sleep, being self-conscious of my body, baby sleeping in our room, and being flat out scared - I didn't care if I ever had sex again! Hubby, of course, didn't share my sentiment. So we finally tried after 12 weeks, and it still hurt like crazy and I ended up crying. Not good at all. It's been 18 weeks now, and it's still really uncomfortable and takes lots of foreplay. Hubby is super supportive and understanding. Just take it slow, and communicate with your hubby! Here's hoping it gets better soon!

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I was told from my physician- 6 weeks.

TLBoylan |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I think everyones physician tells them to wait 6 weeks. Unless you have my physician. She came into my room everyday for the four days we were there, and she never once told me how long to wait. My daughter is 5 1/2 weeks old, and we started having sex again at 3 weeks. I was still bleeding, but it didn't hurt. It actually felt better then did before. Funny thing is that I was the one who was wanting to have sex. My husband kept telling me no and finally gave in lol. I guess it all just depends on how you feel, and what your hormones feel.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I definately waited for the ok from my doctor at my 6 week checkup but before then my fiancee would check me to see if the sticthes were healed. My son will be 4 months in July and it still hurts to have sex. I try to enjoy it but the discomfort makes it unbearable so I tell my fiancee to go slow, sometimes he wants to finish for himself so he goes faster which hurts me more. I love sex and I want to get back into the groove of actually enjoying it. I definately miss doggystyle the most!

RhiannonStroberg |

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I was in labor for 19 hours until he got stuck which ended in a c-section I figured since nothing came out down there that it would be less painful well I was wrong not to mention only waiting 14 days after birth. Don't forget birth control! Most Ob doctors priscribe birth control after the 6 week check up either way, only when you are ready.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

i waited 6weeks before having sex and it really hurt . i told a freind and she suggested useing lube and it help a lot with the pain . my daughter is 4 and i still have mild pain in some postions because i had alot of stiches

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

I waited 14 weeks because my 2nd degree tear never healed back up completely. The tissue is healed but there is still a visible tear down there. I am at 15 weeks PP and I am scared things are going to be a mess until I am done having kids (when i can afford vag reconstructive surgery) Ive seen 2 DRs and both say every thing is fine and if I want it to look like it did before baby I have to have elective surgery. :-( Does anyone else have this issue?

having-sex-after-birth

If it were up to me I would not have sex for the next year unfortunately my hubby does not like that very much. The little one is 3 weeks and my hubby really wants to try having sex again. I'm just too scared to try. I wish he could understand what I'm going through. After researching about it even sex after 6 weeks seems terrifying. Idk I guess he's just going to have to understand even though I'm sure he's not going to be happy about my decision

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

My daughter is almost 6 months. we tried to have sex once at about 3 months and I thought I was going to tear again. It hurt so much I made him stop before we really even got started. I have been too scared to try again but he seems to be very on edge lately. He is moody cause he isn't getting any and I am moody because he is snappy with me. It is really putting stress on our relationship. I am going to try again soon. I am just not in the mood...ever! Use lots of lube...especially if you are breastfeeding (it can dry you out down there).

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

Generally it's 6 weeks after giving birth just to make sure everything is healing properly. At least that is what I was told after giving birth to my daughter. I am not sure if it is any different for c-section or vaginally. I had a c-section and I was told to wait the 6 weeks.

Q&A: Having sex after birth?

My daughter is 4 months old and sex is still painful my husband and I used to have sex several times a day pre-baby so it has become very difficult and frustrating that intercourse still hurts. I had a vaginal delivery with no complications or tearing. I initially waited the recommended 6 weeks before trying the first time. It hurt so bad that my husband had to stop. We have tried several times since with no improvement. Thankfully my husband is a patient and understanding man but we both want our old sex life back.
