Checklist: Packing a Diaper Bag

Okay, so you threw in the wipes. Here's everything else you'll need in your diaper bag.

You’ll soon find a formula that works for you, but until then, here’s a guide for packing the diaper bag. Adjust according to season, the length of your trip (around the block or around the world?), and baby’s age and special needs.

[ ] Diapers (one for every two hours and a few extra)

[ ] Diaper wipes in a zipper bag (these also work as hand wipes for mommy)

[ ] Changing pad

[ ] Diaper cream

[ ] Plastic bags for dirty clothes and diapers

[ ] 1-2 changes of clothes

[ ] Shirt or jacket for baby and mommy

[ ] Blanket

[ ] Hat for sun or cold

[ ] Bottles and formula (for a lighter load, measure powdered formula into clean bottles and mix with tap water at the destination, or pack bottled water)

[ ] Baby food and spoons

[ ] Burp cloths and bibs

[ ] Teething gel or rings

[ ] Pacifiers (pack with nipples in a clean bag)

[ ] Toys for comfort and distraction

[ ] Hand sanitizer

[ ] Sunblock (if baby is over six months)

[ ] Antibiotic cream, fever and pain reducer, antihistamine

[ ] Emergency phone numbers and information

extra shirt and breast pads...if breast feeding-you never know if you'll spring a leak

I recommend buying a pack of cloth diapers, they are great burp clothes, they have a think lining and very durable. So easy to wash and maintain.

INSURANCE CARD! If you have an extra one, that's a great thing to have in there. My MIL watches my son and I drop the diaper bag off with her each day. She had him in his car seat unbuckled on the kitchen counter and he rocked himself out and they had to go to the ER. Ended up with a broken leg! Wish she had had that with her.

INSURANCE CARD! If like me, you drop your diaper bag off with the sitter, it is an essential in the event they have to take them to the ER, like my MIL had to with my son.

Ha, love it. NEVER forget an extra shirt for mommy! I cant count the times I got spit up on with my first even with burp cloths.

If you cloth diaper, a wet bag or even a plastic grocery bag is ESSENTIAL. I use prefolds and covers and compared to my 'sposie Mama friends, I go through more diapers than they do if we're out and about.

i found tiny travel cans of lysol disinfectant spray. the checkout stands at target has them in my area. totally convenient for diaper bag and disinfecting public changing tables or whatever you want to disinfect.

Has anyone considered the first photo of the new arrival to use for a birth announcement? I am not trying to advertise. I just stumbled across it doing a search on iTunes. I just think it is a absolutely wonderful idea, To be able to notify everyone of the baby's birth. Via email, through my contact list that I have on my iPhone. I think every parent should plan for that first picture of the baby's birth.

It's been recommended in our prenatal classes that babies cover up with light clothing instead of sunblock while in the sun for their first year of life to minimize the risk of skin cancer. Also, placing diaper wipes in a zipper bag is a no-no too since it helps breed bacteria. It's better to use little cloths and wet them when needed or buy a small pack of diaper wipes for the diaper bag.

my sister in law is going to be babysitting my son when he comes home from the nicu. we purchased her a diaper bag so that way we always know what needs to be restocked for ours. don't have to worry about anybody going through our diaper bag when they can easily go to the diaper closet and grab em. love the idea of the insurance card. definitely going to be adding that!

I am just new to your website and just spent about 2 hour lurking and reading about this bag store . I think I will frequent your site from now on after going through some of your posts. I will definitely learn a lot from them.

Some of the things in the list really are not very important so it is alright not to bring them. There are some things that are not on the list like extra shirts or umbrellas. Overall it is a very nice list. Senior Healthcare Consultants
