Q&A: Why is baby crying?

How can I tell if baby is crying because of fatigue or pain?

Re: How can I tell if baby is crying because of fatigue or pain?

The Bump Expert

Interpreting baby's cries can be daunting when you feel like you've just started to get the hang of parenthood. And when we say "get the hang of" we mean you've recently discovered that bottle nipples have different flows and mastered the art of one-handed emailing.

Let's focus on the "I'm in pain" cry first. All the shots baby gets the first year of life do more than keep your child healthy. They also teach you what your child sounds like when he is in pain. For most babies, this is a high-pitched, "I-can't-stop-to-take-one-breath-of-air-and-wait-I-thought-I-could-trust-you-adult-people!" cry.  It is a clear distress call and is probably something you remember vividly even if it's been months since you last heard it.

The "I'm tired" cry can be more subtle so it's important to watch your baby for visual cues. Common signs of tiredness include eye rubbing, yawning, pulling of ears, nose or hair, clinginess, and suddenly becoming very hyperactive.  Once you notice baby showing any of these signs he is actually already overtired. The trick is to put your child down to sleep before he shows any of these signs.

re: Q: Why is baby crying?

That covers pain and tired, but what about hungry? Bored/starved for attention? Good idea for an article, but it would be nice to see it fleshed out a little more.

Q&A: Why is baby crying?

My sister saw a baby expert on Oprah a couple years ago and I have included her thoughts on that below. My babies do a small "cough" when they wake up hungry and that is the only time that they make that particular noise. "After testing her baby language theory on more than 1,000 infants around the world, Priscilla says there are five words that all babies 0–3 months old say—regardless of race and culture: Neh="I'm hungry" Owh="I'm sleepy" Heh="I'm experiencing discomfort" Eair="I have lower gas" Eh="I need to burp" from what i remember from seeing the show a few years ago, it's the sound at the VERY BEGINNING of making a noise that you're supposed to listen to. for example, if the baby made a noise that sounds like "neighbor" then you'd listen to the "neh" part of the sound which = hungry. this link gives the background on p. dunstan. http://www.oprah.com/slideshow/relationships/parenting/pkgomoms/oprahshow1_ss_20061113

Q&A: Why is baby crying?

I have those DVDs. They are called Dusten Baby Language and it is very interesting. I think it works. My baby says the "Eh" sound so I pat him and low and behold he burps! The "Eair" one I hear as well. I hold him on his tummy like a tucked football and bounce him while the farts come out. The DVDs are worth the purchase.

Q&A: Why is baby crying?

Thank you for the intelligent comments. Sometimes I have to stop reading because the comments are so useless and bug me. These I think may be more helpful than the article.

Q&A: Why is baby crying?

Yes, check out the Dunstan Method. It really helps--I call it "troubleshooting" my baby. My husband is the one who shared this method with me and I am a fan!
