Q&A: Why is baby bald?

Why is baby bald in spots? What can I do?

Re: Why is baby bald in spots? What can I do?

The Bump Expert

Babies often lose their hair during the first six months -- usually they lose it right along with their mothers! This is called "telogen effluvium," which is the loss of hair after a big, stressful event (birth and giving birth definitely counts). Don't worry, the hair always grows back -- though sometimes as a different color or consistency. The reason for the bald spot is that since babies are on their backs, they turn their head from side to side, and they lose more hair on the back of their head.

Dr. Paula Prezioso, MD, is in private practice at Pediatric Associates of New York City and is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the NYU Medical School.

re: Q: Why is baby bald?

I agree, my son has way less hair than he did when he was born 7/14/08, especially on the back and on the sides.

Q&A: Why is baby bald?

I had the same problem with my little boy. I asked the baby's pediatrician, but he could give me a straight answer, so he gave me the best hair growth products to use them on my baby. After three months of using these products the baby's hair started to grow. Use them too!

Q&A: Why is baby bald?

It's normal to be bald, don't worry too much. Don't try any hair products on your baby, because you can harm his/her soft skin. You can try hair-loss treatment on your husband, who I assume that he has the same problem.
