Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

How do I know if baby is colicky?

Re: How do I know if baby is colicky?

The Bump Expert Chances are if baby has been crying at least three hours at a time more than three days a week for over three weeks, it’s colic. The best things happen in threes, right? Although the incessant crying may make you feel helpless, rest assured that colic isn’t an indication of something more serious or something that you’re doing wrong. In fact, colic affects between 10 to 25 percent of infants, and it should taper off by four months of age. While no one knows for sure what causes colic -- allergies, immature digestion, milk supply problems -- there are ways you can help soothe baby. Babies love to suck, so a pacifier will help calm them down. Rock them along to calming white noise created by a fan or vacuum. Try laying them flat on your chest to help the gas escape or placing them in a car seat above a running washing machine for the vibrations. And always contact your doctor if you have questions.

Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

Colic can be difficult for both baby and Mom during the first few weeks of life. An effective technique to soothe a colicky baby is to swaddle him. Swaddling reminds babies of the warm, snug environment they enjoyed for nine months and helps to soothe and settle them. It also is effective in getting your baby ready for other calming techniques to work, such as rocking, ssssshing and sucking. If you decide to try swaddling, make sure you stay away from polyester fabrics that tend to overheat your newborn baby. Natural fabrics are much better, and merino is best. Although a little more expensive, it's ability to regulate baby's body temperature and keep a sleeping baby asleep shouldn't be overlooked. Wrapping in a merino swaddle can work wonders at getting a fussy baby to calm fast, and will let baby sleep for an average of 1-2 hours longer each night.

Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

The Miracle Blanket worked wonders for our colicky LO. It's really easy to use, so even my husband was a pro at it! We also really struggled with Acid reflux and found the Nap Nanny to work wonders! You can find them here: www.currantbaby.com

Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

Yes, try the Nap Nanny! It makes sleeping much easier and more comfortable. My daughter sleeps 7-8 hours a night in this seat, when she used to barely sleep 1! Best product for colic out there!

Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

Our little one is colicky and it starts every day at 7:15. The first few days were awful... I would be crying, the baby would be screaming and my poor husband would be trying to fix it all! But we found something that works... Fennel Seed! You boil a cup of water and a teaspoon of fennel seed. Let it cool (the water will be green) and then put it in a bottle and let him have some. Just a few sucks and then some burping and you will have a completely different baby! Its amazing

Q&A: Tips for treating colic?

What help me was actually watching what I was eating. I noticed that I couldn't eat potatoes (french fries, mashed potatoes, etc.) while I was breast feeding.I read other people couldn't have too much dairy which reminds me that I couldn't eat cheesecake either. There is a list of other things but it doesn't mean you have to stop eating everything on the list. Remember they are suggestions & you have to pay attention to the things you eat while breastfeeding or at least that helped me. I'm not a professional but my baby hasn't gotten colic since I figured out that I have to cut off on eating potato, corn, gravy & cheesecake.
