Q&A: How to avoid exposing baby to disease?

My baby looks so tiny and frail. How can I keep her safe from exposure to viruses and bacteria? Is it safe to let other people touch and hold her? What about kisses?

Hand washing is without a doubt the most important way to protect you baby from getting sick. It is safe to let other people touch and hold her, but they should always wash their hands first. This is especially important with infants who have not yet had their first set of vaccinations. It's also important to have good judgment about who your child is exposed to. Certainly someone who is coughing or sneezing ism ore likely to transmit germs to your baby. But, kisses from a healthy person that don't land near baby's nose or mouth (or hands that might go into the mouth) are relatively safe.

Q&A: How to avoid exposing baby to disease?

I was just in Walmart for the first time yesterday with my one-month old. Things were going pretty well- some people came up to ask to touch her and I politely said "no," claiming that I am a germ-o-phobe. Then she started fussing right before it was time to go, so my boyfriend took her for a walk around the store while I checked out. When I looked up, he was talking to a group of his friends and my sweet little angel was in the arms of his skanky ex-gf. I was so upset! In addition to being dirty, she smokes, too, and I know she hadn't washed her hands. If I had been there, I would have told her that everyone has to wash their hands before they can hold her. Then- maybe a mad dash for the car while she was in the bathroom! Lol!

Hand washing is a must just as the doctor said and you must avoid having sick people around your little one. I have heard of candida infection symptoms on a baby because the father didn't wash his hands after going to the bathroom. You really have to shelter your baby for the first 10 months from almost everything!
