Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

What rate should my baby gain weight at? When should I worry, in terms of gaining too much or too little?

Re: What rate should my baby gain weight at? When should I worry, in terms of gaining too much or too little?

The Bump Expert

Most babies actually lose weight in the first week after birth. As long as yours is feeding well, making urine and stool, and doesn't drop more than 10% of birth weight, this isn't a problem. By two weeks, I expect a baby to return to birth weight. The average baby then gains about one ounce per day for the first month, and about one or two pounds a month until month six. Most babies double their birth weight by five or six months, and triple it by a year. Remember, though, these are averages. It's perfectly normal for an otherwise healthy baby to vary from these standards. I start to worry if a newborn loses more than 10% of birth weight, isn't making at least three or four wet diapers per day, doesn't seem satisfied after feedings, or doesn't get back to birth weight by two weeks.

My baby boy was born on October 23. He just turned 7weeks yesterday. He was born at 38wks and 1day. I didn't have gestational diabetes, but he was still 9lbs2oz. He is now 11lbs14oz. It's amazing how quick they grow! He's huge!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My baby is 6 1/2 weeks old. He was born 18 November and has gone from 7lb 3oz at birth and is now over 12 lbs. He is bottle-fed breast milk and sometimes gets similac for a supplement before sleepy time. He doesn't look particularly fat, just a good baby chunky.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My baby was born on November 22nd. He weighed 8 pounds even. Two check ups ago the doctor said he was beneath his weight goal, but today he weighed 11 pounds and is back on track and rising in percentile for his age. He went from leaving milk in the bottle at each feed to being a voracious eater.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My baby was born 10.16.2010, and she came into this world at a staggering 11lbs, 11oz. She is now at 14lbs, 12 oz. We worried too for a while, because it took a full two weeks after birth to get back to her birth weight, but she is doing great now!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My son weighed 8lb 8oz when he was born and at his 2 mth chkup, he weighed 13lb 10 oz. He won't take a pacifier and he takes a 4-5 oz bottle every 3 hrs and he also sleeps very good at night. I do worry that the baby is overweight but as long as the doctor says that he's ok, I'm not going to fuss too much.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My little peanut baby was 5 lbs 13 oz when he was born on Feb 15th...he was back to that on Feb 19thy and is now 2 weeks old and 6 lbs 13oz. He is a much better eater than his big brother was. He also grew almost 3 inches in 2 weeks. His doctor is quite happy with his progress :)

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

I think the answer to this question is that all babies are different...my 11 week old has been dealing with not gaining enough since birth, but he was born 9lbs 8 oz! He eats well, never fusses or complains...our Doctor was very quick to promote formula which bugged me so much we found a new Pediatrician!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

All babies a different. My son was born 2 weeks early, and he weighed 7lbs 15oz, by 4 weeks he was 12 pounds. He goes back to the doctor at 8 weeks on the 18th and I am expecting him to be at least 15 pounds.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My little boy is six months old now. When he was born he was 7.2lbs and at his six month check up he was 20lbs and 28ins long! He is the "average" height and weight of a 1yr old. But his pediatrician said that he is in great proportion so it's not a problem. And she thinks he's going to be tall!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

Newborns are suppose to gain 1/2 an ounce to 1 ounce a day. If your little one starts off with rapid gain, it might slow down earlier than is typical, but generally, weight gain slows around 4 months. My little one gained over an ounce a day for the first 6 weeks, then slowed down to closer to the 1/2 ounce a day range. Since she started gaining so quickly, MD is fine with the early slowing. Additionally, she started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, so, naturally, weight will slow, since she's not getting those additional feedings.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

Although it's written in many books, the normal rate of wight gaining varies with every child. My kid gain exactly the right number of kilograms in the first year, but my sister's only gain half. The good thing is that both of them were very healthy. On the other hand, I know a mom who's child was born with 5 kg and kept growing very fast! At the age of two, the doctor recommended diets as the kid was already obese. I think she said she found some good pills to help his kid on Phentermine.org and the problem was solved in the end. So, I think we don't need to despair if the child doesn't grow according to the books just as long as he is healthy!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

my son was born 8.5 lbs 21.5 inches long. At his one month he was already ten lbs! but, he was also getting longer. I dont go crazy with feeding him just because he is crying either, its just how he is growing. Every baby is different but baby will determine when to eat. Just make sure you and your pediatrician are on the same page.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My son weighed 8lbs 6oz at birth, he turned one month this past weekend and had a check up today. He weighed 11lbs 6oz! I couldn't believe he gained so much but my doctor said he was perfect and he does have a very good appetite. I breast fed in the beginning but he never seemed satisfied so I started pumping and feeding him from a bottle plus supplementing with formula at night. I had a really hard time keeping my milk supply up. He was eating about 4oz a feeding whether it was formula or breastmilk, eating about 8 times a day. I had a hard time pumping enough to keep my milk supply up enough for my little guy's big appetite so I switched to formula about 2 weeks ago. He is satisfied after all feedings now and goes a lot longer between. Wish I was able to keep breastfeeding but it just didn't work out for us. Hope this helps!

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My son just turned 4 months old 2 days ago and weighs 25 pounds!!!!! The dr put him on cereal at 6 weeks old and baby food at 3 months to keep him fuller longer so he wouldnt gain so fast and so far he is slowing down and staying the same weight a little longer. He would just eat so much formula that he would be sick from all the liquid in his tummy by the end of the night.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My daughter is 7wks and was born 8lbs. 15oz. She is now 13 lbs. even and growing fast. I too was concerned about the fast weight gain, but as long as she is growing length wise, and her developmental issues are fine, her weight is not an issue to the doctors. She is just a happy chunky little girl.

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

Iris Yanira I don't think you have to worry...My baby was born Jan 27 2012 and weight 7lb 6oz not much different then yours...we weight for her first shots about a week ago when she was 9 weeks and she was now 11lb 10oz...my doctor said that was awesome...the only difference is that she is breastfed not bottle fed...is your son growing length wise too? i would think its normal for babys to grow

Q&A: How much weight should baby gain?

My son was born Dec. 16th 2011, his due date was Jan 5th 2012, he was 6.5 pounds, 21.5 inches long. He is now a little over 4 months and weighs 17.1 pounds, and he is 26.1 Inches long. When we went for his 4month check up, the doctor thought she had the wrong room because he looks like a 6 month old. He has jumped a couple percentiles and said that she was worried, but that he is completely proportioned, and he is not "over weight" she said we might be over feeding him. Is it possible to over feed milk fed babies? When he isn't hungry anymore, he pushes the bottle out with his tongue, or just doesn't let the bottle go in his mouth by blocking it with his tongue and lips.
