Q&A: Does my preemie need to take in more food than a full-term baby?

Re: Does my preemie need to take in more food than a full-term baby?

The Bump Expert

Yes, most premature babies need more calories per body weight than term babies. It takes a lot of energy to grow outside of the uterus, repair lung damage, fight infections, and cope with illness. Still, how long a premature baby will actually need extra calories for depends on their health, plus any medical challenges and how well they are growing.

Our preemies didn't take in more by way of volume. We supplemented breast milk with extra calorie formula which can be added diectly to breast milk.

While in the hospital with my baby, I was told that preemies eat no more than full term babies. I would ask your baby's doctor about it.

I don't think that is true although I can't be sure. You can try soy baby formula.I heard that this formula is one of the greatest and I think this is the one that I will buy it for my baby when I will have it.

When my preemie daughter was in the NICU, her breast milk was supplemented with some sort of growth formula to help her get bigger faster but was stopped after only 2 weeks since she didn't need it anymore. Once the baby is growing at a steady rate, it doesn't matter how much they weigh. My daughter was discharged at 3 pounds 11 ounces.

Maybe you should try special baby formulas which have many proteins which the baby needs.I know that this may sound weird but not all the mothers who feed their child with breast milk do enough because there are moments when their breast milk is not enough.
