Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My six-month-old is super fussy.  How can I tell if it’s teething or something else?  What can I do to help him?

Re: My six-month-old is super fussy.  How can I tell if it’s teething or something else?  What can I do to help him?

The Bump Expert

When your little angel turns into a cranky devil, there's a good chance he's teething. Is he drooling a lot? Rubbing his mouth or ears? Trying to gnaw anything he can get his lips on? Does he have an unusual amount of diaper rash? Is he running a mild fever? (101 or less -- anything more isn't from teething and merits a call to the ped.) Run a finger along his gums to feel for hard raised bumps or sharp bits. The two front bottom teeth are usually the first to come in, followed by the two front top ones.

You can help by giving him something cool and hard to gnaw on (like a spoon or teething toy you’ve popped in the freezer). For pain relief, many parents swear by homeopathic remedies like Hyland’s Teething Tablets. Acetaminophen also helps, but check with the doctor for the right dosage. And even if your little guy shows no real evidence that teeth are about to make an appearance, feel free to use “He’s teething!” as an all-purpose excuse when he bursts into tears at the sight of your mother or tries to chomp another baby’s finger during play group.

re: Q: Dealing With Teething?

My pedi said the teething tablets have an ingredient in them that in high doses can cause hallucinations, and since it isn't regulated by the FDA, a bottle of them could have a high concentration of that ingredient. Therefore, causing your child to have hallucinations. Has anyone ever heard of this? Or experienced it?

re: Q: Dealing With Teething?

My son has gotten 4 teeth in the past 3 weeks, then today I looked in his mouth, and he has two more coming in. He's been throwing up, running a temp (right around 102 degrees, and is fussier than he has ever been in his whole life. I feel like I've tried everything. I give him frozen teething rings, but he doesn't seem interested, I give him Tylenol, and baby Orajel, still nothing. A month of this and I'm starting to lose it! Any suggestions on what I should do? Both for him and me? I'm almost tempted to take him to the doctor.

re: Q: Dealing with teething?

DS is about to be eight months old and has been teething for months but not a single one has come out yet. How long do I have to wait till I get worried?

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Vanilla extract contains 35% alcohol. I would not recommend giving that to an infant.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My baby's dr. told us the same thing about those tablets. We stopped using them right away.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My son started teething at about 3-5 months and he was getting teeth right away. Get a wash cloth and wet it with cold water and give it to him/her. It works wonders. Also pop cycles some babies like some babies dont. If they dont work still with oragel. But the wash cloth worked the best for me.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

I used the Hyland's Teething tablets, a homeopathic remedy, and they were AMAZING!!! I have even used them myself when I had a toothache. And, since you only give your little one 2-3 at a time they are very hard to overdose on, unlike Orajel which baby's swallow and can have issues with. Yuck is that stuff nasty. I have never ever had issues with the Hyland's Teething tablets and my doctors have never said anything about hallucinations. You could also try frozen bananas to let them knaw on, just keep an eye on them.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My little guy got his first teeth about a week before he turned 4 months. He is 4 1/2 months now and we went to the Dr. with an ear infection. She told us not to use Orajel until he's at least 6 months old. But she said something about rubbing Mylanta on his gums. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

I used Hyland's Teething tablets too with my daughter. My sister-in-law has used them as well and we never had any problems with them. I also used a wash cloth too for those in between doses.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Interesting info... I'd rather use the vanilla and the homeopathic tablets... orajel has miralax in it which is used for constipation?! wierd....

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My 6 month old is cutting her two front teeth at the same time now. She will not take teethers or pacifiers. We give her cold water, let her bite on a cold cloth (without fibers), or give her 1/3 of a popsicle when necessary. If she is really hurting we give her .4mg of baby Tylenol. The Hyland's tablets were recalled and we were very uncomfortable about that.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Teething tablets are great for teething babies. They do work really well on some children. I definitely recommend that try to give your baby some of those tablets. Let us know how it goes for you and your little kid.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Well, if your baby suddenly starts drooling non-stop, so much so that you have to change your shirt every time you carry her with her head on your shoulder, she may be teething. If she is biting on anything and everything she can get her hands on, including her own hands and maybe even yours, those teeth might just be on their way.-Any Lab Test Now Franchise

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

I would take caution in using pure vanilla extract. Most have a very high alcohol percentage (true pure vanilla has a minimum of 35% alcohol.) I make my own vanilla from straight vodka and vanilla beans. Not something you want to feed a baby! Sometimes things that are "all natural" or "homeopathic" give the illusion that they're harmless when they aren't.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Mylanta is great for the diaper rashes that often come with teething because it decreases the acidic irritant found in your baby's poop, however I do not know how it would help the gums but it will not harm your baby to try it, as long as it is just a very small amount. Vanilla does have alcohol in it, which is likely the reason it eases some of the pain, but again, if you try this method make sure you are using a very small amount, not enough for the baby to ingest. Tylenol works well, but a cool wet bath cloth is probably the most excellent choice. It works great for my daughter.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Its all about giving the baby something to chew on. It will help their teeth feel better. This has worked so good with my kids. They love to chew on items. payroll accounting

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

Has anyone had issues with their babies poop while teething? My 6 month old is getting his 2 bottom teeth and doesn't seem bothered in any way, however his poop has been totally different. Its very watery and he has 2 bms a day where he always only had one.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My son's 11 weeks; he's been drooling like crazy for the past 3 weeks, he has super runny poop, chews on everything within his reach, I've tried to get him to chew on his teething toys which he'll do for a minute or two and then he just starts crying...I don't know if he might feel like its too cold???

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

When I first moved to Seattle, my baby started teething as well. I did not know what to do as well, and the baby's crying really ruined my day. Luckily I managed to find some resources online to help me. Gently rubbing your baby's gums with a clean finger will help sooth the pain a little. Keeping the gums cool can also help ease the pain. Some people like to use teething rings, but I personally do not trust them.

Q&A: Dealing with teething?

My son just turned 5 months on the 6th and has been "teething" for awhile now. He has been drooling and chewing on everything. He has been super cranky lately and very clingy. I just got teething tablets and have tried orajel, they seem to work. He also has diaper rash that wont really go away. We thought he was alergic to baby wipes but i guess its from teething. Im going to try the wash cloth(ive heard alot of good things) -Thanks for the info
